John Griffith Chaney, better known as Jack London, was an American novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.

London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of animal rights, workers’ rights and socialism. London wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam.

His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen".

Another coming of age tale from Jack London. Joe Bronson, a kid from the good part of town in San Francisco decides that he wants to run away from his dreary life of history lessons and mathematics exams and join a ship. Before he runs away, he beats up a few of the tough kids from the poor part of town, winning respect from his friends and classmates.

Joe is employed on a sloop called Dazzler, where he befriends Frisco Kid, a former tramp who ran away from a boys prison. But soon Joe discovers that the Dazzler is a pirate ship. He decides that he wants to escape. The book features some sensational descriptions of life on a ship during a storm. Like Tales of the Fish Patrol, the novel is action packed and relentlessly thrilling.

Something kept me from enjoying it completely. Was it because Joe was a bit of a pussy for wanting to escape his life as a pirate and get back to his family after a night on the Dazzler? At the end of this short novel, Joe tells himself that he learnt a lot about life and humanity. After just four days on a sloop.

One of the things I enjoy most about reading works by Jack London are the place descriptions. "The Cruise of the Dazzler" is an action packed story that takes place in the San Francisco Bay area. Having grown up and worked my way through school on the Oakland waterfront, I truly enjoyed re-reading this story. London's technical descriptions of how his main character Joe, learned to sail from the Dazzler's young crewman, "Frisco - Kid," provided an authenticity that is sure to keep the attention of any reader.

Oh, if he, Joe Bronson, were only on that fishing boat and sailing in with a deep-sea catch! Or if he were on that schooner, heading out into the sunset, into the world! That was life, that was living, doing something and being something in the world. And, instead, here he was, pent up in a close room, racking his brains about people dead and gone thousands of years before he was born.

Having no knowledge of who Jack London was before reading this, I can now safely say I know who he is. He was an American author born in 1876 and, judging from The Cruise of the Dazzler, really, really, really liked boats. Jack London loved them so much that this book, which was his first one to be published, is a boat-lovers-bonanza. I appreciate the enthusiasm in this book, and one has to wonder whether the starry-eyed protagonist who daydreams about sailing the seven seas while trying to study is actually Jack London himself.

Whatever the case, I found quite a bit to like here. I liked ‘Frisco Kid and Joe’s interactions, and enjoyed seeing Joe become a sailor, though I’m not the biggest fan of where this story eventually goes, and the message it’s trying to convey. You see, Joe ends up with a bunch of bay-pirates, who steal and do bad things. As much as Joe loves to sail, he’s a moral teenager, and doesn’t like thievery or dishonesty. To cut a long story short, once he leaves the bay-pirates, his dream of sailing is seemingly abandoned as he returns to his father and explains everything to him.

The novel ends on an odd note, really. I wanted to see Joe actually achieve his dream, maybe he and ‘Frisco Kid run away and get their own boat, something like that. Instead, the message of the book seems to be - get good grades, get a nice safe job, and beware of bad people. It’s pretty lame, really, though I understand what Jack London was going for. He was going for the whole ‘I’ve-returned-and-learnt-a-valuable-lesson’ thing. But I would have found it more interesting if this story ended up on the opposite end of the spectrum, y’know, the ‘don’t-stop-pushing-toward-your-dream’ thing.

Well, regardless, I had a pretty good time reading it, anyway. Props to Jack London for writing nice, concise chapters. Chapters in this book are not long, they’re short and sweet, which is just the way I like them. Also, rarely in this book did the writing feel monotonous or boring. There were a handful of times this happened though, but, as the chapters were such a nice length, there was never a time the book dragged horribly (cough, Dickens, cough). In an odd turn of events for me, I actually wished the overall novel length was longer, can you believe it!

Me of all people, who goes on and on about having books be nice and quick, get in get out and all the rest of it, me of all people is saying this! Yes, in fact, I am. You see, as I mentioned above, I wanted to see Joe actually achieve his dream, not give up in the end and learn a valuable lesson because he hooked up with pirates. ‘Frisco Kid, while he definitely had a character-arc of sorts, could’ve had more page-time, too. This is a complement, kids, because I’m saying I wanted to see more of these characters. French Pete can go **** himself, though, he was an ass. But, yeah, I think delving more into these characters and possibly extending the story a bit would’ve been great.

Another pretty big thing, and this is potentially my biggest problem with the book. Were it not for this problem, The Cruise of the Dazzler would possibly receive four stars from me. There is so much ‘boat-slang’ and weird word usage that continued to fly right over my head the whole way through the book. I’ll give you an example of a sentence with heavy ‘boat-slang’ with question marks around phrases I don’t understand:

Twice he heard the waves buffeted back from some flying (forefoot?), and once he saw a sail to (leeward?) on the opposite (tack?), which (luffed?) sharply and (came about?) at sight of him.

Unless you’re heavily into boats, I’m not sure how you’re supposed to know what half those phrases mean. This didn’t make me want to stop reading the book, because I still wanted to find out what would happen with Joe, but it was jarring, especially when I’m really getting into the story, really trying to sink myself in, and then all this jargon comes up out of nowhere which makes no sense to me.

“Well, ugh,” you say, staring at your monitor in disgust, “if you weren’t so stupid, Isaac, you’d know what that stuff meant.”

And to this I say, why, you’re utterly, totally correct! Thank you for reminding me of my stupidity! I’m going to watch reality television now. Duh-duh-dum-dee-duh.

Excellent book, both entertaining and engaging. The action is sometimes intense, and the story moves along at a good pace, but the real treasure for me lies in the character development. While Joe is the main character, his father plays a central role, demonstrating strength and wisdom in his love for his son. As a father myself, I hope I can demonstrate so much care and compassion for my boys.

I started to listen to the Cruise of the Dazzler as an audio book in 1985 but for reasons I can't remember I wasn't able to finish it, either had to return to the library or perhaps one of the cassette tapes was defective. It is now available as a free Kindle edition. The shortish book, a little long for a novela but short for a novel. is about a boy who runs away from home and joins the crew of what turns out to be an San Francisco Bay oyster pirate. The captain engages in other kinds of piracy along with stealing oysters from comercial oyster beds in the bay. The runaway Joe finds that he and another boy, known only as the Frisco Kid, make up the whole crew. This story must be somewhat autobiographical since Jack London was an oyster pirate on San Francisco Bay in his youth. Both boys I think represent the author.

So, nostalgia weekend - on Saturday it was Chronicles of Narnia, on Sunday, Jack London.

When I was a kid I had almost the entire collection of 'great illustrated classics' - Kids' versions of the classics, with a lot of the fluffy language dummied out so you got the story in its broad strokes. I widely attribute my love of reading to those books, and as an adult, I partly regret getting rid of them, as so many of the classics I read turned out to be very, very dry.

Jack London was an odd case. I loved White Fang and Call of the Wild as a kid, even the adult versions, but the rest of his work didn't really resonate. I think, in part, that I equated Jack London with snow, and the north, and not all of his stories fit into that exact bucket.

The Cruise of the Dazzler, for instance, is part of the "Tales of the North" Anthology I've had sitting on my shelf for almost 20 years, mostly unread. And to make it odder, the person who compiled this anthology made the odd choice of only including half of it - specifically, the half that occurs when Joe reaches the sea. Everything that came before, they cut for some reason.

So to read it as intended, I had to locate another version online, and cobble it together. And I enjoyed it immensely.

Dazzler is essentially a play in two acts - The first, a classic boys' adventure, where Joe Bronson and his buddies try to buy some kites after dark, rather than studying for a big test the next day, and run into a bunch of trouble on the way.

The second is a high-seas adventure, after Joe runs away from home and accidentally signs onto what is essentially a small pirate ship - the sloop Dazzler. Once there, he finds something of a role model in the 'Frisco Kid, gets into even more trouble, and ends up learning awfully quick that he didn't have it so bad back home.

Something in the way London writes has always resonated with me. It's punchy. That's largely the only way to refer to it. Joe is a silly lad, and we know this from the first, but he's stubborn and determined to have himself an adventure. And he does.

The book does feel very much like it's two short stories crammed together - and I suspect that's intentional. Critics far better than I have torn apart and analyzed London's work with a microscope, and found that he is at his best in short story format. So London, when writing novels, chooses to write multiple short stories and tack them together in chronological order, tied together by similar characters or themes.

This is evident here, in that the first half of the book is very little like the 2nd half, the actual Cruise in question. But by starring Joe Bronson, the whole thing is unified together.

This feels like less a review and more stream-of-consciousness recollection after reading the book. I don't know. I really liked it. It was a short adventure, and there are a few logical holes - like does Joe really believe he's a worldly man after four days on a boat? And if you don't know nautical terms, a lot of it might sound like gibberish. Thankfully, I read Midshipman Hornblower earlier in 2022, so didn't have to pull out a dictionary too often.

But all in all it tickled that fancy of mine to go back in time to a simpler age when people could and would drop everything and go on an adventure, coming back stronger, wiser, and in this case, richer.

(Can Yayınları s.27)

Umarım hayatınızın bir yarısında Jack London'a şans veriyorsunuzdur. Bunun pişmanlığı çok büyük olurdu demeden geçemeyeceğim.

Edebiyatla kalın.

Once you start reading London, you just can’t stop. Although there are a couple of his books I didn’t enjoy, this one felt like something missing from my reading journey—now finally complete.

Joe is a 14-year-old boy living in San Francisco. School isn’t really his thing—he’s undisciplined, struggles with rules, and doesn’t exactly fit in. His father wants him to become an engineer, but Joe dreams of a more adventurous life. One day, he runs away from home and ends up joining a man named French Pete aboard his boat, the Dazzler. At first, the sea life feels like freedom: the wind, the waves, and no rules or responsibilities. But it doesn’t take long before Joe realizes Pete isn’t as honest as he seems. Smuggling, illegal activities, lies… Joe finds himself caught up in a world of crime.

Pete’s right-hand man, Frisco Kid, has been in this life much longer than Joe. The two grow closer, but Joe’s questions and doubts start to shake Frisco’s worldview. What started as a search for adventure slowly becomes a moral dilemma. Joe wants out—but running away again has its own consequences. As things unfold, he’s no longer just a kid.

Although it may seem like a children’s book, the themes of crime, morality, class differences, and freedom make it suitable for a much wider audience. The chapters are short and punchy, and the pacing is generally strong—only dragging in a few spots. My biggest challenge was the heavy use of nautical terms. There were lots of words I had to look up.

Tropes: #comingofage #foundfamily #seastory #oceans #cruise #worldclassics
Similar reads: Reminiscent of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Kidnapped, as well as Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

This is a very good book about the adventures in the sea and father-son relations.

The main character is Joe, a young boy who lives in a rich family and fails the exams at school because he prefers spending time with his friends. Studying is not for him, or so he believes. One day he runs away and gets on the Dazzler - a pirate ship where he will learn about the life on the sea. He is oblivious as to who his employers are at first, but quickly realizes they are low people with the exception of Frisco kid - a young but slightly older teen. Together they roam the seas, dreaming of escape.

The book has its pros and cons but it was the first large work by Jack London and deserves to be in the hall of fame among the teen adventure literature of 20th century. The story depicts the boy`s growing understanding of some life questions that worried him and shows a quick and steady growth of character. At the same time, it is not overly saturated with events or characters, although the suspense hangs in the air as Dazzler`s ventures become more and more dangerous and daring.

Something that the book has can chase the readers away - it is a rather quick read (thanks to the story being small) and therefore the character`s development seems a little bit forced. Also, the shortness of the book does not allow for explaining fully the Frisco kid story or the story of other pirates.

Overall it is an enjoyable read for everyone who likes teen adventures at sea.

"Önsözden;

"Önsözden, Jack London hakkında;

1.5/5 - Almost O.K.

Very blatantly moralizing. I get that it's a boy's story to be read as a short piece of entertainment, but between the beautiful scenic descriptions and initial strong start, I could only find tedious lectures on how to be a "good boy" and a prose so full of sailing-jargon I could have drowned in it. My expectations weren't exactly improved from the introduction, in which an excerpt reads as follows:

"The needful thing is to find stories in which the heroes have the characteristics boys so much admire— unquenchable courage, immense resourcefulness, absolute fidelity, conspicuous greatness. We believe the books of EVERY BOY’S LIBRARY measurably well meet this challenge.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA,
James E. West Chief Scout Executive."

It made me roll my eyes when I first read it, and subsequently made me roll me eyes for each preaching sermon on morality. It stands to prove that this is London's first novel, and it's also apparent to me now why this is considered a rare read in the literary wealth Jack London left in his wake. It was an O.K read, but far from something I'd consider reading again.
