Sugar Cookies & Zombie Secrets

Rate this book
A woman who can talk to zombies. A sheriff who knows more than he’s letting on. A murder. Hollows Grove is full of secrets.

My name is Harlynn, and three months ago, I woke up in the small town of Hollows Grove with no recollection of who I am and surrounded by zombies no one else could see. I may have lost it right then and there, but thankfully, a snarky woman named Miss May took me in and helped me get onto my feet.

Now I spend my time attempting to live a semi-normal life while trying to ignore the pesky zombies that won’t seem to leave me alone.

But when a man ends up dead at the town bake sale, and Miss May is the main suspect, I may have no choice but to turn to the zombies for help. Well, that and Kingsley, the town sheriff, who might be the most gorgeous guy I’ve ever seen. But he might be hiding just as many secrets as I am.

Sugar Cookies & Zombie Secrets is episode 1 in a SERIALIZED YA paranormal mystery romance novella series. Each episode is approximately 20,000 words or 110 print pages. Expect a new episode to be released every 6 to 8 weeks.

This was more of an introduction to a world than an actual mystery. And it does not look that the series is going to continue.

It was quirky, and sarcastic, so over all a decent quick read. But the mystery, and the world building were fighting with each other for space instead of building suspense together. In the end the mystery was solved via a world building info dump.

There were also a few things that didn't really make sense, and some strings that were left out there. Like what happen to Ms. May's table of cookies, did anyone go and get it?? How was the party not drenched from the rain, it was in a park. Those type of beats were dropped once the murder was introduced. Obviously small potatoes in the big picture, just weird to introduce events for the plot but then drop them when they are no longer relevant.

I did enjoy the banter the main character had with the various people in her life, though the small town dynamics were a bit over done once the murder was introduced.

Overall, if the series did continue I'm intrigued enough to pick up the next book.

Note: Has profanity.

Harlynn wakes up in an alley and remembers nothing about her life, doesn't know where she is and has no idea why she can see zombies.
With the help of Miss May, Harlynn begins to build a life in Hollows Grove. As hard as she is trying to move forward, it is very difficult when she has no past. And seriously, what is up with the zombies? Why is she the only one who seems to be able to see them?
When Miss May is accused of murder, Harlynn knows she has to investigate to clear Miss May. This only brings about more questions and no answers.
Sugar Cookies & Zombie Secrets is the first book of the Harlynn's Mystery Investigations series. There is a lot of set up in this book with very little payoff. It all works though, and the exposition in this book is definitely going to make for faster pacing in the books that follow.
I will definitely read the next book to see what direction the series takes.
