Wolf Hunt #2

Wild Wolf

Rate this book
After making his escape to Russia, Declan McGrady believes he finally has the chance to start over. Mysterious deaths in the small town he’s chosen as home serve to shatter his delusions.

He can only hide for so long, and in Russia, folklores aren’t just tales of the past: they're real. Nowhere is safe in a world where the nightmares that go bump in the night are on the hunt for him and his magic. To survive, he will have to put his skills to the test—and do his best to resist the lure of the untamed outdoors.

Survival is only the first of his challenges. The winter moon is rising, and Declan’s wolf tires of being alone.

The woman they desire, however, might become the death of them both.

RJ Blain suffers from a Moleskine journal obsession, a pen fixation, and a terrible tendency to pun without warning.

When she isn't playing pretend, she likes to think she's a cartographer and a sumi-e painter. In reality, she herds cats and a husband, and obeys the commands of Tsu Dhi, the great warrior fish.

In her spare time, she daydreams about being a spy. Should that fail, her contingency plan involves tying her best of enemies to spinning wheels and quoting James Bond villains until she is satisfied.

Felt shorter than the first one, also felt like less was happening and the story side tracked to brownies and cooking. The beginning was very Russian heavy and after that spent most of the time confined to the cabin. It did feel like there were too many characters crammed together, as the stronger ones seemed to fade into the background and pop up every now and then. Felt sorry for Amber, she’s been one of my favourites throughout the series but I like that-fingers crossed-she’s finally getting her match. None of Declan’s questions answered but plenty of build up to the main question. Will be interesting to see how things end.

I was disappointed in the lack of action in this book compared to the previous one in the series. It felt like the plot was sidelined for a ton of conversation that didn't serve any real purpose.

Once again R.J. Brain hits another homerun!!

I first found R.J. Brain through her Witch and Wolf books and was hooked! The only complaint I have is no matter how many pages the book has it is still to short!! I really encourage readers to order the other Witch and Wolf books, they are well written and have a great story line.

Declan is hiding out in Russia.

After the events in the previous book Declan had to get away, along with an orphaned wolf he has made his way to Russia. Travelling into he reached a small town close to the Chinese border. He has acquired the papers necessary to pass as half Russian ----------which explains his bad accent and any cultural mistakes--------------- Declan works for logging company, is building his own cabin, piece by piece and her keeps to himself the rest of the time, going into town only when he needs supplies. The peace and quiet has been good for him, he enjoys his life now but there's a problem. The town is home to a werewolf pack and the humans know of the werewolves, not only that but there is a problem with the pack. First off the pack is fun by witches, they brand the wolves --------- to show their station in the pack-------- there are those who have total control of their wolves, those that are a bit wild and those that are almost too far gone to be allowed to live. Declan has just kept his head down and tried not to draw attention to himself, but now the witches are showing interest in him, a werewolf with such control of his beast is highly prized added in is Declans unusual colour and it was bound to happen that he would be approached. Declan has no choice but to reach out to Desmond, Richard and the rest of the gang that he ran from last year, he needs their help, desperately if he's going to get out of this alive. There's always a good mix of fun characters in these books but when the action starts it doesn't hold back. There's no bad language or graphic sex scenes which make for a very enjoyable read.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

3.25

I didn't really enjoy book 1, but immediately gave the second book a try based on liking / really liking other books by this author. I liked book 2 far more. This is why I'm just posting a review for book 2.

I had not read other books in this world setting featuring main characters in this series and I did feel that that was a hindrance with reading both books in this series.

First time read the author's work?: No -- I've enjoyed other books by her.

Will you be reading more?: Of this series, probably. -- Others by this author, yes.

Would you recommend?: Maybe.

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

It's equal parts entertaining and frustrating. Entertaining because the character's are likable, especially our narrator Declan and the banter is amusing, and I want to know what is going to happen from a plot/resolution perspective. And frustrating because there are too many characters and too much banter at the cost of the story. Do we really need all the others? Must they all banter, all the time? Surely we can have some story progression and action. Instead the story is so focussed on giving all the characters from the previous series enough page time and banter that we are once again left without the main plot being resolved. But I will still pick up the next one because I do like Declan and I do want to know how everything turns out ( I only hope I actually get to find out instead of being side tracked into more endless banter).

I was really sad when this ended. I wanted more. The characters are awrsome. Please write more. In fact please write more of EVERYTHING or kidnap me and feed me your stories. You are one of my pre order authors i adore ALL and i mean ALL of your stories.
Can i kudnap you and feed you cookies so you can write me more stories ?
Excellent world building character interaction dialogue intrigue top notch. Declan and amber need to have puppies nicole and richard need to have puppies. A whole new world can grow around these puppies and wolves. Devlan can be a new species and when is the beetle cuff making a scene. The pink glowey fur is important too why? But everything ties together i bow to your prowess with a pen 💙

With life being so unsettled these days, fun, laughter and intrigue is just what makes my world balanced and something to look forward to. Wild Wolf is exciting, and the Wolf and Witch world so easy to immerse myself into that nothing can reach me to bother me anymore. The world is well crafted and beyond interesting to visit, and the characters are all multifaceted and feel real enough that I could almost go out and knock on their doors just to hang out.

I've adored every book in this series and I'm really looking forward to more. R. J. Blain is a very talented writer that I am more than pleased to have found.

Declan's story continued

Little short for this author but excellent writing without rambling. Continued from book 1 of this trilogy. I'm not going to spoil the story. For best results and series understanding, go to authors page and start the witches and wolves series first. These are this authors best writing and I have read most of them multiple times. Then read book wild wolf 1 before this one. The other series, romance with a body count is a good way to spend a winter's night reading a book, several of them.

How does Declan stumble onto these situations which require Inquisition action? He managed to avoid them for over 15 years. Why now? It can't be Dante's fault - he knew Dante for some time before the castle incident. It must be Charles' fault - this started with the contract leading to the castle incident. Now poor Declan is running into witches and wolves who take an inordinate interest in his glowing wolf, even in darkest Russia. So much for a quiet life. Charles, you owe Declan such an apology.

Loved it

These books are like a nice glass of champagne. A little bubbly, slightly sweet and a kick you don’t expect LOL.
In all seriousness though, I love that this series combines the fun with the serious and interesting, and the fact that all of the characters are well developed and has lots of depth and layers to their personality. It makes you relate to them, and wish you could meet them IRL.

Excellent read!

RJ Blain is an automatic buy for me and I was not disappointed. This is not a book that will make a lot of sense unless you've read the earlier books in the series. But if you have, you will love that all the favorite characters play a major role in this book. I especially enjoyed the way Declan was making his way in a remote area of Russia and can't wait for the last part of the story.

So lonely. So terrifyingly realistic.

My mother was a Russian linguist and a government analyst. She would’ve enjoyed this and been able to compare to real life locations and human scenarios. The small village run by religion more so than government and the cult-like mentality. Declan and his pet wolf finally have a reason to bring them all home. Nicely done! And Amber! Love her so much!!!

Fun Times!

Wow, this book was a joy for me. I love the main character. He has his stuff together. I know it's about supernaturals, but the characters are just so..., human. I can understand them and really get to enjoy their personalities. As far as second books go it a winner. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.

Awesome!

This book picks up shortly after the first one ended. It is a great middle book for the series. Some questions from the first book get resolved, more are created and the set up for the next book is really good. As in the first book, this one has some action and intrigue. It kept my attention and I did not want to put it down.

Declan is back! After fleeing Switzerland he ends up in Siberia, where witches are branding wolfs and the supernatural is out in the open. When a "wild wolf" appears to be targeting townspeople, Declan is convinced to call on help, and he calls on "Bob", bringing Richard & Company back to his side to help with the wild wolf problem. But all may not be as it seems.

Excellent

This is book two in the trilogy. Patiently waiting for the last book. The author has indicated the title of the third book will be "The Edge of Midnight". The books in the Witch and Wolf series are standalone, but they revisit characters - it is like visiting old friends. Highly recommend this book and this author.

love this book!

I love Declan’s story and how the spins were created in this book. Desmond’s involvement is a thing of beauty. I also love the mix of how their wolves influence their behaviors but at the same time they don’t. R J Blain has created a wonderful and believable world and I am excited for another book from this universe.

R j Blain on an unexpected trajectory

Love the book, the main character has evolved well since the first if the series and, like the Karma series, the story seems to have taken an unexpected turn 🤗

Great 2 Book

A lot of middle books in trilogies tend to fall flat, but R.J. Blain made this into a wonderful book. It ties up some loose ends, all the while shaking out some others in preparation for the 3rd book. I very much look forward to the final book in the trilogy.

This one again doesn't really end end. It ties up some loose ends from the first book but creates new ones. At the end the author states she will eventually get to the last book. I can't dictate when she comes out with it but a tentative timeline when you don't finish the story would be nice.
