The Book of Love #4

The Song of Love

Rate this book
Welcome to more Regency fun and frolic in the romantic, bestselling Book of Love series. Now Violet Farthingale must put The Book of Love to the test to capture Romulus Brayden’s heart.

What makes a man fall in love? Violet Farthingale is desperate to know, because she has just been caught in Captain Romulus Brayden’s home with her gown unlaced and his hands too far up her legs to explain away. It was an innocent misunderstanding, of course. She was attacked by bees, and he came to her rescue. No one seems to care that nothing happened. She is now forced to marry this handsome stranger. Everyone knows Farthingales only marry for love, so how does she make this big and brawny Royal Navy captain fall in love with her? And how will she fall in love with him in under a week?

Romulus Brayden has always loved the sea, and now it seems he’ll have to learn to love Violet Farthingale, because she is going to be his wife. Honor demands it. After all, he did have his hands on her luscious body, and while her behavior was innocent, his certainly was not. Lusting for Violet is not the same as wanting her as his wife, but there is no way out of this scrape without ruining her, and this he will not do. She is insisting on their reading The Book of Love together. Well, why not? Braydens marry for love.

Can this book lead them to love before he is recalled to duty hunting down pirates along the Cornwall coast?

Song of Love is the fourth book of Thr Book of Love series. I always enjoyed reading about The Farthingales I purchased this on my kindle without looking at the order of the books yet I do not regret it.

”Farthingales always marry for love”

The Farthingales are one of my favorite fictional families. They are jolly and a close-knit family that despite the innocent, comedic and at the same time scandalous circumstances their daughters end up in, some way or another they always find it in their hearts to let their daughters choose their happiness, Society be damned.

• The cast of characters which includes The Farthingale Family, The Brayden Family, and other fantastic secondary characters with some previous characters from the Farthingale series making cameos. Violet Farthingale was a delightful and quirky character whom I adored and her chemistry with the devilishly handsome Captain Romulus Brayden is so sweet and endearing. Did you know that the Bees played a role in making this match? I am not kidding.

• The Romance developed nicely spoiling me with sweet moments between the couple to a few sizzling scenes that made the sparks fly. It’s by no means a grand romance but a very cute one to read about.

• I will read this series once I finish the Farthingales books and read this one in order.

💋💋

This series continually enthrals me , I just adore Meara’s writing.

These two, Romulus and Violet are beautiful together , such feeling and chemistry they are addictive.

The build up of their relationship was the best so far , he’s totally besotted with her yet she has reservations that make her uncertain that they really belong together , we can see that they were made for each other.

I Loved the plot , the twists and tension that builds around the characters.
The many Braydens that reintroduce themselves throughout and the new characters that are like a breath of fresh air . All wonderful.

And the emotion when she sings for him , sigh, I was hooked .

Give me more and soon Meara x

My review :

When found in an involuntary compromising situation, how will two promptly engaged persons react together ...

It is no secret I preorder every new release by Mrs Meara Platt, since the first Farthingale tale I have read, I since follow every new release.
So when an other Farthingale meet a Brayden, it can only be a sweet and lovely story in-the-making.
Violet, aptly named, is a lovely young miss only weeks away from her debut. But everything turned to ash when she is found in a compromising situation.
This first scene was just hilarious.
The matchmaking bees!
She is a sweet and caring young soul with the voice of an angel.
Romulus is young too but like the other Braydens, he choice duties to his country over anything else. Yet, he is the first to fall under the Chipping Way Curse. He is quickly besotted with his new bride-to-be, even if he denies it at first.
Their tale is one of a double love, the one they have and will only grow with time and the one between every members of their big family broods.
Together they have no real hardship to get to know one another, as they are companion souls, kindred spirits.
But what will be a Farthingale story without a bit of drama.
As while they come along perfectly, things around them are not always so smooth, up to them to decide whom deserved their trust and faith.

It is so good to see again all those Farthingales and Braydens, I have never enough of them.
A lovely new installment in the book of love series demonstrating that what might appear at first as an impossible turn of circumstances with bad luck can also be the best thing in one’s life.

I am very disappointed with the Song of Love. The story moves slow and end with situations unresolved. The ending is rushed and makes no sense to the storyline. I like the H/H the chemistry between them was good. The storyline had not real direction.

Oh Meara, this has been such a wonderful series! Her writing speaks to my heart and I am always excited to become captured in one of her stories that are perfect for a historical romance!
The Book of Love has already "helped" bring three matches together, so it should be able to aid Violet Farthingale and Captain Romulus Brayden toward that emotion!
Caught in an innocent compromising situation (it had to do with bees and of course honey!), the Captain feels honor bound to marry Violet and he only wants to learn to love her. Braydens only marry for love after all!
But Violet wants them to read that book together and see if they cannot find that elusive emotion.
Love, Love, Loved this one! Don't miss this or any in this series. Heck, any book that Meara Platt has written!! I would say she gets better and better, but she is always great, no matter what story she writes!!

Her eyes were violet.
Not just violet, but a vivid, sparkling violet.
Which explained why her parents had thought to name her…Violet.

Not gonna lie, I probably enjoyed this because I didnt think too hard. I dont know if the first book in the series primed me for the writing style, but this one was easier to get through. The heroine reminds me of Felicity Jones as Cathy in Northanger Abbey. Innocent, young. Their courtship and marriage happens in a week.

There’s some heroine and hero engaging in casual sexism (rawr men are baboons, men only know lust, men think with their dicks, she’s not like other girls), villainous widows, and confusing family trees (references to other books maybe?) sprinkled throughout the story. Im not trying to be mean, I know these are basically tenants of Historical Romance but darling, its all about the delivery.

I could honestly care less about the so called “scientific” Book of Love; unfortunately it functions as the primary device to prolong the story. Overall, cute for a time-pass read.

Oh that book!

Once again the Book of Love strikes and Meara Platt finds the perfect couple for it to work on. She’s a darling Farthingale and he’s a handsome Captain in the Royal Navy. Bees play an integral part in introducing them but the book takes it from there. This story will make you laugh and sigh and wish you were there.

Esta historia es un romance histórico y, como tal, está bien. Hay algunas cosas que no me convencieron, pero se pueden pasar por alto fácilmente. En general, fue una lectura rápida y agradable con cierta libertad histórica y personajes decentes.

When I read a book like The Song of Love, it makes me wish that Harlequin still did movies. This was a delight to read. I love the characters and story-line. This is a feel-good story, a book that will make you forget about the world's ills for a few hours. I enjoy reading a story where a couple works through their problems -- not that this couple had major problems, but it was refreshing to read about them asking each want they wanted as far as marriage and other things in life. There is a steamy love scene, but it is between a married couple and that gives the book another A plus from me. I love authors who don't shy away from showing romance and intimacy between married spouses.

Witty, wonderful story!

This is my first introduction to Meara Platt’s amazing characters and stories. I can’t wait to read all the books in this series and her others. I instantly fell in love with all the characters and the witty, heartfelt dialogue.

After the first chapter I knew that this was my favorite of the series...

This book whole the 4th in the series is a lot different from its predecessors mostly because the main characters are complete strangers. In the other books they were people that all knew each other basically all of their lives. So it was interesting to see how Teo people who didn’t know anything about each other fared when dealing with the infamous Book of Love...

Violet is the sister of Poppy from the second book and after Penelope from the previous book now the “magical” book has come into Violet’s hands. Which she promptly uses to hit her future husband over the head with. Literally. Though technically speaking it was innocent and accidental. Meeting while being attacked by a swarm of angry bees is quite the unconventional start of courtship. Having been caught together in a seemingly compromising position after said bee attack Romulus immediately accepts that he must marry Violent since that’s how they did things back then. Because of course a young lady’s reputation is everything and a scandal would ruin her forever, no matter that the entire thing was mostly innocent. Violet though objects because she feels it’s wrong for the man to be forced to marry her just to save her reputation.

With the help of the Book of Love though they try to see if maybe they can work things out between them. After all the book worked for Olivia, Poppy and Penelope so it must work, right? With no preexisting relationship though it’s interesting to see how the book’s teachings work.

About the book...

The mystery author of The Book of Love has to be a woman. Only a woman would think to put any of this mess in a book. That being said I don’t particularly disagree with the logic and “science” behind it but something like it could only work in the 1800s it wouldn’t work at all in the slightest in modern times. It also wouldn’t work on all people. The fact that all the ladies of this series are rather young and very inexperienced is the only reason it works so well for them, they literally just don’t know any better. The idea of the book however silly it might seem is interesting though. Especially since I myself wondered often if people in those days really just fell in love because someone was pretty or someone had money. It always seemed rather weird to me and I wondered is it all just the fanciful notions of writers? The Book of Love though does help the couples of the series though to see past the superficial and actually make a real connection which I very much appreciate. While the book may or may not be scientific it does have good observational insights.

I would love to see it be tried out with a more matured experienced woman oppose to teenage girls who who nothing about nothing and haven’t even actually seen their first London season. Don’t they know any 20 yr olds or spinsters or young widows that might have a go at it? I liked this book and I like the series I just think it could benefit more from having someone with experience with love than to have so many starry eyed silly girl.

Also...

This book was better than the others because Violet was a lot less of a silly girl than the others and she wasn’t relying on the book for the answers to everything in the world like they were. And there wasn’t the excessive use of the term “sense receptacle” that o found I cried I’ll annoying in the 3 prior books. I like the series as a whole but this book was the best one. And I’m looking forward to see what trouble Belle and Finn get into in the next one.

MEANING OF LOVE, LOVE, SEXY MEN

5 STARS for another of Book of Love Series, this one is one of my top favorites, The Song of Love. It's funny because the book was discussed but it wasn't used to go chapter by chapter or to use the very handsome Captain who had a very firm, tanned, & muscular abdomen and was very "healthy" for his 29 years. Romulus was extremely impressed with his low brain thoughts on Violet; now, he needs to find out if he can find enough about her on the higher brain level that would keep them happy & happy with each other for a lifetime. He had discussed this with Violet & she is holding back reasons she thinks may be enough for them just to call it quits. However, she doesn't think she has any special abilities to help a mate so she brings nothing; she sings, but that can't help anything. This wonderful book is chock full of delightful thought observations by the Captain, ( except they are silent & in his mind), when a crowd of people are around & especially one Lady with a cane. They are sexy, hilarious in the circumstances, and made me love the character, smile & chuckle with & at him realizing that his SHIRTLESS body that is filling up everybody is a natural state for a Navy man, besides Violet, seems to be affected alot by his chest. The characters are just absolutely terrific, wonderful, & lovable for the most part that leaves one wanting more info about them. Luckily, our 2 lovebirds, each have large families; him - big men & her - usually petite women, each 1 different than the insipid usual debutantes. Eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.

If you haven't read any of The Book of Love Series, you are in for a treat! It is a wonderful beautiful series about Love & each book centers on something different like Song, Taste, etc.. which features prominently in that book. This Series does discuss the different basic understanding why men are attracted to women & why they choose the one they do; also it goes into why women are choosing their men to marry. Actually, it takes more than 1 book to fully get the whole supposedly scientific method of love, but it is an interesting side to a wonderful lovable Historical Regency Era Romance Comedy, with drama.

The Song of Love by Meara Platt is an enticing story about a young man who has just moved into a house on Chipping Way. Romulus Brayden has heard about the Chipping Way curse but he had laughed it off. Shortly thereafter he find himself tending to a young woman named Violet Farthingale who has been attacked by bees. As everyone knows, the way to sooth a bee sting is with vinegar applied directly. If the bee sting is beneath clothing, it must come off. Such is the way. Then the witnesses arrived. Amongst them one of London's most notorious gossips, Lady Withnall, small but mighty, who has made it clear she will spread the inappropriate gossip far and wide it they are not betrothed within the week. Rom now believes in the curse.

Both determined not to marry, this is an entertaining story of how love can change minds. It is an entertaining plot with a cast of character to match. Violet's uncles are worth the price of admission, alone. Rom is an upright young man, prepared to live the life of a bachelor after his years in the Royal Navy, who was only trying to aid a lady in distress. Violet is a relatively immature young woman who has been given a book, the scientific explanation of the interactions between men and women, including a chapter on the differences between the male and female brains. The interjection of this book and its philosophies throughout the story make for entertaining interludes. This is a thoroughly entertaining book, full of two people falling in love. I recommend it.

I received a free ARC of The Song of Love from Dragonblade. All opinions and interpretations are solely my own.

If you have read the reviews, you know by now that this is a hilarious romp on Chipping Lane. Meara Platt has created heartwarming, family driven stories with characters you will want to be part of your own family in this series!

Captain Romulus Brayden, after spending years in the Royal Navy, is on leave while his ship is being repaired & has moved to his house on Chipping Lane. Rom is handsome (sigh worthy), a natural born hero, wise, honorable, kind, with a great sense of humor. The last thing he was thinking about was marriage.

Violet Farthingale is lovely, kind, innocent. quite naive & is about to make her debut in her first season. Violet is in possession of The Book of Love, which will detail the interactions between ladies & gentlemen & how their brains are different. The snippets from The Book of Love only adds to the hilarity & Violet's obvious innocence.

The accidental compromise, of Violet right after they meet, causing a marriage leads the reader on a side splitting, romantic trip with a couple finding their way to each other & a love to last a lifetime. The scene when Violet sings to Rom just had me completely choked up & I fell even more in love with both of them.

I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

Splendid!

The Song of Love, the fourth installment of Meara Platt’s Book of Love series is a splendid tale. More than two years have passed since the Book of Love last brought together it’s last couple, but now Poppy’s sister, Violet Farthingale, has come to London for her first season. Royal Navy Captain, Romulus Brayden just bought his first house on Chipping Way, looking for a little peace after fighting pirates at sea, and unaware of the Chipping Way curse. Can the Book of Love help them find enduring love, when an innocent rescue leads to scandal and forces them to wed? The Song of Love splendidly blends two families from other book series written by the author, so you get to revisit many characters from other books. If you haven’t read any of Platt’s books before, don’t worry, it still reads well. I can’t wait to read the next book!

This deserves more than five stars as it has a remarkably enjoyable storyline with wonderful characters and is filled with humor, passion and it is definitely a page-turner of note.
Romulus is a very interesting male character. To start with he is able to think with his head, the uppermost one, in order to help Violet after she is stung by bees, but later passion overcomes him and ...
Violet is not sure but she thinks it is all about 'The Book', after all it is called the 'Book of Love' and that must account for something of what is happening to them!
I would recommend this story to anyone who wants to read a really great tale that is not only interesting but will keep one very entertained.
My voluntary review above is based on my own views of this story and is unbiased.

The Song of Love (The Book of Love) Meara Platt

What a delightful story of hoe two people caught in rather compromising situation quite innocent. All due to a swarm of bees and stinging Violet Farthingales a new neighbor Romulus Berenger, a sea Captain in mis Majesty's Navy. When they are caught with him wiping vinegar all over her because of the bee stings. A comedy of errors, the Chipping way curse and book of Love all work together to bring both young people together for love. Danger, intrigue and thieves add to the situation with everyone enjoying a concert of music on behalf of the orphanage to add to the story, you can't help but enjoy this book. A must for all readers of romance. I loved this well written story, with most enjoyable characters.

Violet Farthingale was happily reading the book given to her by her family when she was attacked.

Captain Romulus Brayden has just bought a new house when screaming alerts him to a problem.  Little did he realize that rescuing the lady would be witnessed by the smallest but most influential gossip in town.

Our little songbird learns that some people do unkind things with good intentions and others kind things with bad intentions.

Our hero has a very good instinct about people,  which he will definitely need.

A really fun story with very loveable characters.  I have read and enjoyed each book in this series. Each book can be read separately.

I always very much enjoy Meara Platt's books; they are well written and interesting - perhaps not precisely true to the behaviour of females of that period but not so far away that you cannot believe in her heroines and their behaviour. Her families are likeable, her heroes are fantastic and her heroines talented and down to earth, but their behaviour is realistic and often entertaining. Who would believe that a story would start with a half dressed couple getting caught in such a compromising situation due to bee stings!! Meara obviously has a marvellous imagination to be able to envisage such a situation arising. I look forward to reading her next books in this particular series.

Great 4th story

This is the 4th book in the series, I really enjoyed it. It had Boiler and Ramulas pairing off very quickly, and I wasn't sure how the story would move forward. The author did a great job thing characters together from previous books. I realized I may have missed a series. There was a bit of mystery and intrigue, as well as lots of love, anxiety a bit of steam and intrigue. It was a light feel good read. I am looking forward to the 5th book in the series. I would recommend, but would suggest reading the series in order so that you have some idea of the characters.

I'm enjoying these light romances.

One gripe though... I'm getting heartily sick of the book. Just about every single story involves us having the same bits of the book read to us. It was cringingly bad the first time, but having to go over it all again in every story is getting really annoying. Obviously, because it's someone reading from the book, it's the exact same passages, word for word, over and over again. I know, the series is called "Book of Love" but I still keep hoping one of the men really does toss it in a lake.

Other than that, it's pretty much the same light read as the other books in the series.

It's a sweet book. I only had a couple complaints.

I'm over the "book of love" gimmick. The same scene of the two main characters discussing the first chapter has been in every book in this series with almost no difference between them.

The author tried to fit too much in this book. Too many subplots that should have been cut because they did not add anything. The hero's ex lover was pointless. The child being assigned as his cabin boy was pointless. It would have been better if the author just focused on the sibling con artists and actually fleshed them out.

Also, too many side characters from different stories clogged up the book.

Violet Farthingale meets Romulus Brayden because of bees. The bees also are the cause of a compromising situation that gets them engaged to each other on the day they meet.
They marry quickly and love each other.
There is a dangerous situation that arises when Violet is invited to sing for the benefit of an orphanage.
Romulus is a sea captain and fights pirates. There is a cabin boy that is a little Lord.
The elements are fun and well put together.
This is the first instance in the Book of Love series where the characters marry by midway through the book, which means there is lovemaking (coupling is the 1800s term).

A Quick Regency Romance

This is the third book I've read by Meats Platt, and while I love the underlying ideas in her books, I'm left wanting. The Song of Love was okay, but not overly memorable. As with the other books I've read by Platt, they seem a little clumsily executed and unnecessarily rushed for the given plot. They also don't quite feel like they are truly in the Regency era. It is a quick read and while some might enjoy her style of writing, I found myself skimming a out halfway through. I don't see myself attempting to read any further books by Platt.
