BOOK 5: MISSING In the busy town centre of Canterbury, a woman and a young boy are snatched from the street. A few miles away, a man stands on the edge of a viaduct ready to throw himself off. Sergeant Shaun Carter, a police negotiator, is trying to talk him down, but he dare not get too close. This man is the only person who has the answers needed to find the missing. As the situation spirals out of control, Shaun asks for help from his maverick police colleague George Elms.
BOOK 6: THEN SHE RAN On a lazy Sunday morning, Jenny Harris is shaken awake by her panic-stricken boyfriend, Joseph. Their baby daughter lies asleep on her chest. ‘We’ve got to go!’ Joseph screams. Jenny sprints with her family from the hotel. And it’s clear that they are being chased. Their pursuers are indiscriminate and they are deadly. Her boyfriend falls, caught up in the carnage, but he manages to give her one last message: RUN!’
BOOK 7: HER LAST BREATH Detective George Elms thought he'd seen it all, until he comes up against serial killer Henry "The Bull" Roberts. Henry Roberts had a type — young, blonde, attractive women. He is three years into a life sentence. Two of his victims were never found. Now, Henry Roberts is dying and he wants to make a deal. Move him to a secure unit by the sea and he will tell the police where the other victims’ remains are. The offer is accepted and Detective George Elms travels to the force who led the original investigation. He is the messenger. He finds a police force and a community still shattered. As he reviews the old case notes he also learns something else. Henry Roberts didn’t work alone.
Charlie Gallagher was a serving UK police officer for thirteen years where he performed many roles. Starting out as a front-line response officer, he was also a member of a specialist tactical team and worked as a detective in various areas, including elements of Counter Terrorism.
Charlie now writes full time. He lives on the south coast of England with his wife and two kids and, somehow, a spaniel, a tortoise and a two cats, one of which has far more twitter followers.
Charlie Gallagher, I applaud you LOUDLY!!! Your background as a police officer has afforded you the opportunity to regale us with stories & characters that are impossible to ignore! Inspector George Elms provides us with tenacity balanced with humour.
This three-book offering contains the first three novels in the Detective George EIms (Langthorne Police Series).
In the first book, “Missing,” Elms deals with a hostage negotiator gone wrong, placed in an untenable situation by a vile criminal. Elms does his darndest to keep everyone safe and bring the situation to a successful conclusion.
In book 2, “Then She Ran,” a young woman with a baby is forced on the run by the poor choices of her boyfriend. Her pursuers “are indiscriminate and deadly”, taking out random strangers on the street, to keep her from telling what she doesn’t know she knows.
In book 3, “Her Last Breath,” the jaded Elms comes up against a serial killer who scares even him. Politics forces Elms into taking actions he finds morally repulsive and which he knows will only end badly. Very. Badly.
This book is an excellent introduction to the Elms series. Each story gives a sense of Gallagher’s ability as a writer, and slowly introduces Elms, a flawed but brilliant detective who isn’t afraid to step on toes.
Gallagher is a sitting police officer in England, and his varied law enforcement background is reflected in his stories – the dark, gritty, disturbing cases, the interoffice politics, the stressors on officers’ families and private lives. His stories seem very real to me, and the characters are (except for the bad guys) people I’d want to hang out with.
Each of these novels kept me on the edge of my seat with heart-pounding non-stop action. I normally don’t binge read, but Gallagher hooked me on Elms from the get go, and I had to know what happened to Elms, his work family, and his family family. The stories are realistically gruesome, which can be hard to swallow, but the relationships between Elms, his team, and his superiors are also strikingly realistic, so balanced out the bad parts for me.
Gallagher also writes the Maddie Ives Series, which is equally dark, gritty, disturbing, and ultimately satisfying as the Elms series. I highly recommend anything by Gallagher.
I have a problem recommending it because of some of the content
When I finish one of these books I have a problem getting started on the next. Maybe it's the content , maybe it's the style. The endings are always satisfying though.
I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy. Charlie Gallagher's characters are all believable and I loved the banter between George Elms and Emily Ryker. Gritty, grizzly hard hitting storylines in all three books.Just waiting for the latest Maddie Ives book from Mr.Gallagher now.
