WINNER of short historical category of 2020 IDA contest
A year ago, lawyer Grayson Wainwright's brother was killed due to faulty metal bridge braces. When Grayson files a wrongful death case against a company accused of supplying shoddy materials to the Transcontinental Railroad, he relishes his chance to achieve justice. Grayson’s two witnesses intimately know the accused, Leary Riddock--one is his wife, Loraine, and the other is his secretary, Catalina del Mar.
Catalina and her husband, Joaquin, moved west from Omaha, working at various jobs for the Union Pacific. But when their infant son died, Joaquin abandoned her in Cheyenne, and Catalina was forced to support herself. She became a bookkeeper in Riddock’s construction company and soon learned her boss was not a legitimate businessman. As soon as the facts are revealed about Leary’s embezzlement, she agrees to serve as a key witness.
Then Loraine is killed right before she is scheduled to testify, and threats prove Catalina is next. Now with an orphaned infant on his hands, Grayson must move heaven and earth to protect his beautiful remaining witness…and his heart.
As a child, Linda was often found lying on her bed reading about characters having exciting adventures in places far away. Upon reaching a landmark birthday, she decided to write one of those romances she loved so much. Easier said than done. Perseverance paid out and twelve years later, she received her first call from a publisher and a confession story was published. Now Linda writes heartwarming contemporary and historical stories with a touch of humor, and many have a tie to her previous home of Texas. Linda enjoys writing from her cabin in the mountains among the cedar and pines with her husband of 34 years and their two much-loved dogs.
An intriguing story that grabbed me from the first page. Catalina was a widow and trying to support herselfby working at the hotel after her husband left and she lost her job at the railroad. What she did not need was the attention of two men, one thinking he recognized her (and she did know him from her other job) and unfortunately they followed her when her shift was over. Grayson Wainwright was locking up his office when a woman grabbed his arm and asked him to act like her knew her, so began the adventure of Catalina and Grayson! This was so interesting due to the angle of Grayson trying to get justice from a man who caused his brother to be killed and the connection to Catalina who worked for the man and would become a witness! Suspense, murder, intrigue, a baby and an attraction that cannot be denied! Loved this story!
I know this was a novella, so with the difficulty to having to make a quick romance happen between a widow and a lawyer, while also solving a case AND a murder. I felt the book was more about the court scene than it was about building their relationship. Then we don’t find out what happens to the two men that were following her. Did they disappear? Who killed the baby’s mother? Have potential….
Thanks goes to the publisher, via Net-Galley, for the chance to read and review Grayson by Linda Carroll-Bradd, book 8 in the Bachelors and Babies series. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.
Grayson is a well-written, and well-researched novella with engaging characters and a unique plot. For a shorter book, the characters are very well developed. The pacing is excellent, and it kept my interest from the first page to the last.
Catalina is an endearing character. She’s intelligent and determined to make it on her own after her husband is killed. Her heartache over losing her little one tore at my heart. I could feel her pain when she finds herself in a situation, she is not comfortable with at all.
Grayson Wainwright is a great hero. He’s a man of integrity determined to right a wrong. He’s also willing to come to the aid of a woman in distress. When he ends up with an infant, he takes it in his stride.
The romance between Linda and Grayson is sweet. It focuses on the building friendship and the companionship that grows between them as they search for ways to right the wrong that was done to both of them. I enjoy this type of love story a great deal. There’s a lot of emotionally charged moments between the pair, and I really wanted them to find their happy ending.
There’s a bit of a mystery involved in this story, and Catalina and Grayson have to work together to solve it. It’s through their search that they end up developing feelings for each other. That aspect of the story is excellent, and I enjoyed the plot twists a lot.
If you enjoy clean romances with great characters and an interesting plot, then you will love Grayson as much as I did. I plan to read more of the books in the Bachelors and Babies series. Happy reading!
While the story is part of the Bachelors and Babies series, it is a stand-alone story. The story is a clean historical western-based book. The story will bring together Grayson Wainwright and Catalina de Mar in unusual circumstances—a baby that doesn’t belong to either of them but needs both of them to survive.
Grayson needs to avenge his brother’s death, one caused by greed and neglect, and in the process, he meets Catalina de Mar, a widow who approaches him, fearing she is in danger. The story will have fate play a role in these two people meeting, even if it was a temporary rescue because his case and her play a role.
Catalina is a widow, and after years working for Emerald Construction Company as a bookkeeper, she is now working as a desk clerk at the Palace Hotel. Two guests will have her uneasy, which goes from bad to worse as they follow her one evening.
The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people as mystery, suspense, and danger all play roles in this sordid tale of greed and death. But for Grayson, being able to prove his claim is lacking critical evidence. Convincing a material witness to testify will learn to another shock and leave a baby in his care. Getting Catalina involved is risky but necessary.
The story has several twists and turns and proves that arrogance and pride are often people's downfall. But when the trial is over, the defendant is found guilty, what will happen to the baby? Have unusual circumstances brought together a family by chance?
This is another wonderful story in the Cowboys and Babies series, a multiauthor series. I loved this story a lot. I have loved them all so far, but this one just really grabbed my heart right from the beginning and right up until the end. I adore the hero and heroine in this story. This is one of those stories that you know from the first few words that you will read it through without putting it down, it is that good. I can’t explain why I felt pulled in right away but I was. It’s suspenseful right from the start. All I can say is get this story and you will be hooked too I believe, right from the start. These stories in this series for the most part, are stand alone books so it doesn’t matter where you start in this series except for two that are related. Just check them all out at least those release so far. The good news is this series releases the first of every month and not every week like some where you just can’t keep up with them. I guarantee you will love this story.
Reading books like this takes me back to the 90s when I was reading every Harlequin Historical romance I could get my greedy little hands on. I especially loved the post-civil war era westerns. To this day, I have a hard time resisting them! I did enjoy reading this little slice of life story. It was way more realistic to the options and happenings of that time than any of those old books were - and a lovely story to book.
In the last year Catalina lost both her husband and infant son. Both were traumatic for her, but especially the death of her son. She also lost her job as a result of a lawsuit against her boss. The lawyer brining that lawsuit - is none other than Grayson Wainright. Grayson's brother was killed as result of the railroad construction company using shoddy materials. As part of his case against the owner of the company, he needs the owner's wife to testify. After a chance encounter with Catalina, he recruits her to try and help him convince the wife to help him. shortly after meeting with the owner's wife, Grayson finds her murdered - with her infant daughter left alone and crying in her bed.
Grayson then takes immediately steps to keep both Catalina and the baby safe. All the while, with Catalina struggling with caring for an infant again in the face of her grief.
Overall - I enjoyed the story, but at times felt I was being dropped in the middle of something where I didn't have a lot of information about the past. I particularly enjoyed the courtroom scenes - which seemed much more realistic than some of the scenes you see on Law and Order or other "legal" dramas! I also really enjoyed the fact that Catalina's life was portrayed really honestly and in line with the times.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.
I have enjoyed all the books in this series, but this is my favourite so far. It is not only well written, but has an interesting storyline.
Grayson Wainright is a lawyer and seeking a way to successfully prosecute a business man Leary Riddock. His shady practices of buying and using inaccurate amounts of materials while skimming money from those purchases, caused a failure of supports on a bridge causing deaths, one of which was Grayson's brother. Quite by chance he meets Catalina del Mar, who once worked as book keeper for Me Riddock, but can be keep her safe before she testifies?
This was a little different form some of the other stories of the babies. Grayson was lawyer and he was trying to prove Riddock Co. had used inferior materials building a bridge, which fell and killed two people. One of those persons was his brother. Catalina Del Mar husband was killed in a house fire. Amaya, daughter of Mr. Riddock, is the baby in this story. Mother found dead and Grayson rescued the baby. Complicated story but so interesting, you will want to read this one.
Each book in the Bachelor's and Babies series is unique in how the bachelor received a baby. Since Grayson is a bachelor attorney, I was wondering where our how he was going to end up with a baby. This story is fast moving, but full of mystery as well. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Grayson, orphaned baby Amata and widow Catalina Dr Mar. This story has some twists that I wasn't expecting, but enjoyed immensely.
I enjoyed this courtroom suspense with a railroad fraud patterned after the Credit Mobilier scandal involving the formation of the Union Pacific Railroad. The story included murder, arson, and a cute baby that needed to be cared for. Enjoyed the character development and tender scenes in this one.
One minute Grayson is heading home and the next he is seated in the local diner sharing dinner with Mrs. delMar, a lovely widow whose help he needs. Two people desperate to help one another game in the orphan of the man responsible for his brother and her husband deaths. Full of intrigue this is a page turner.
This is a bit different from previous Bachelors and Babies stories, but Linda Carroll-Bradd has done an excellent job telling this tale. She has done a great job with the plot and the characters are very well thought out. You will delight in discovering how they find their happily ever after.
This is a multiple author series and this allows the readers a chance to find new authors to follow. This is a very creative series. Murder, babies, mystery and love makes this a great adventure. I highly recommend you start at book one and enjoy each authors story. Well worth the time to read🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💖💖💖💖💖
The love story of Grayson and Catalina. Grayson is a lawyer who is trying a case for business fraudulent practice. When his main witnesses are killed the only one he has is Catalina. Can he win this care and keep her save to testify? The first Chapters are a little slow but in the end it's get better.
I look forward to each new book in this series, and this one didn't disappoint although it was different from others in the series. Grayson was a lawyer whilst in the past the bachelors were usually ranchers.
Grayson - a lawyer filing suit on h ex employer Catalina - widow and list her son . I enjoyed reading this captivating story that is fantastically written with charismatic characters and intriguing plot/story. Their story has a wonderfully sweet HEA!
Grayson a lawyer who wants justice for his brother and Catalina who is one of his key witnesses. They have to work together and take care of a infant girl. Can they overcome their grief and build a new life together? Entertaining story with some suspense and a trail that I really enjoyed reading.
I really enjoyed this book it has Mystery , Suspense and Murder . I really like Grayson he is the Prosecutor in this case Mr. Riddock . I recommend. 18 and up .
Although I'm not very knowledgeable about the law extant at that time and place, it appears the author did her research well. Her Spanish leaves a bit to be desired but it doesn't detract much from an interesting story.
A sweet happenstance romance full of happy coincidences and a bit of danger. There were a few minor glitches with editing but for the most part I enjoyed the story.
While the characters and story line were very good, I like a little more humor than was in this book. This was a new to me author and I will look to read more by her.
The book kept me entertained. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the legal proceedings were realistic enough. The story was clean. I enjoyed it.
