This tale of healers with “talents” is the sixth in a series of stories featuring the psychically talented members of the Hyllis family. Hundreds of years after a plague induced apocalypse collapsed civilization back to iron and horsepower, the Hyllises have a genetic tendency to inherit “talents.” Eva Hyllis and her ancestors became healers because their talents let them feel inside their patients. This helps them diagnose the underlying causes of many illnesses. Eva’s children Tarc and Daussie have inherited telekinetic and teleportation talents. Their cousin Kazy’s a telepath. Telekinetic pressure can stop bleeding, teleportation can remove arterial plaques, and telepathy can provide anesthesia and correct psychopathy. In this book, they set out on a treacherous journey to treat Eva’s sister who’s dying of cancer. And they keep finding more conditions that can be treated by their talents.
I was born on the island of Cyprus where my dad was employed as a mining engineer. We moved to the Philippines (more mining) when I was three and then to Arizona when I was 9. I went to med school at the University of Arizona and did a residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Kansas. I taught Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until I retired in 2017.
I've always loved science fiction and it's been great fun getting to write some. I also like music and have a little home recording studio. You can read more, listen to some music and look at some of my art, at http://laury.dahners.com/ if you like.

I still like the story but the things I disliked in the last book are getting worse. The types of treatments they are trying and describing are getting way more complicated. Much more complicated in fact to be believable. Every character at one point in the story said " I read about it in a book of the ancients". There aren't that many books so why would one person have read something the other ones didn't?. The series started with the family doing basic procedures and using some medical terminology but not overdoing it. The characters were describing very complex ideas in this book that I didn't find believable. There is no way they could have read enough in the short period of time to know so much. They now are treating cataracts, cancers, heart disease, abscesses, infections, gall stones, kidney stones, and now back surgery? Reading a paragraph or chapter about something in a book doesn't make them competent in doing what they are doing. It also doesn't make sense to do all that stuff and then try to hide their talents. They don't want to be accused of " witchery" and yet they do things nobody else has ever heard of or even seen. They expect nobody to think that is weird and start asking questions?
On a side note, I really dislike Eva
I liked the earlier books much better. I will still continue this series if there are any more because I like the characters (except Eva) and the idea, so the things I mentioned about are frustrating.
This series is excellent and I really enjoyed this book. I want to send appreciation to the author for finally digging out his thesaurus and cutting way back on the use of the word "snorted." It is my pet peeve so I wish he would eliminate the word all together. However, as I listened to the audiobook the word bothered me much less than in prior books.
I was very worried about the change of narrator after so many prior audiobooks. But, the change went better than expected. After a few minutes I couldn't even remember what the former narrator sounded like. Plus, the number of female characters has increased and the new female narrator does better with their voices and especially the younger girls.
That brings me to my only real remaining concern. That is, the number of new characters and especially teenagers has gone way up. I realize there have to be enough characters for Eva to eventually start a real medical school. However, she now has plenty of students of all ages. There is also plenty of help in the Tavern kitchen. And, it looks like Hera may be able to fight a bit increasing their protection too. So, no more new characters! If the character list grows anymore I won't be able to tell who is who!
This series of books are absolutely brilliant, I've only got one more to read sadly the characters are believable and you really get to like most of them. I read several of his books and they've all been very different and unputdownable I think I made that word up but it says it all. I'll definitely read the rest of what Laurence wrote. .
The story started really well, but I found my attention wandering during the middle of the book. The author got a bit carried away with his medical knowledge. I normally like the way the author intertwines modern medical information into the story, but this felt more like a medical lecture. The book was still an enjoyable read and if possible I would have given 3.5 stars.
Congratulations to Lawrence Dahners for this amazing series. It’s hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
I love all of the series written by Laurence Dahners. Sisters was a great continuation of the Hyllis family story. A fast paced easy read. Looking forward to #7.
I always look forward to each new book eagerly. This is a series that I really enjoy, very thought provoking and moves very well. Dahners is one of my favorite authors, entertaining and intriguing. I highly recommend all his series, just make sure you set aside the time to read it because it is hard to put down. I wonder which series will be next. I await with Bates breath. Thanks Laury!
This while having some future apocalypse writing in it is more wish-fulfilment by a doctor than S/F. It is a very good treatise on medical treatment while at the same time showing how paranormal gifts could do the same or better as current medical treatments without the modern medicine and tools. Recommend this for anyone interested in medicine, medical students, nurses etc.
I especially enjoy reading books with a healing basis. This author paints a world which has recessed and lost a lot of its knowledge. The evolution of the talents developed by the characters illustrates how lost knowledge combined with evolving talent can create hope in a distonian society. Please continue with this brilliant series.
Regrettably I always finish each book in a day or two because they are such a good read. The characters steadfast actions to do the right thing for the right reasons and dogged search for new approaches when seemingly impossible problems confront them makes for a feel good read every time.
I just love this series. First, the amount of love and caring for family and patients is heartwarming. Second, I love the “talents” and what they are able to accomplish. I also love their kick butt way of taking care of murderers, rapists, etc... great book, great series
Laurence Dangers writes the best books. Bar none! The Hyllis family has special talents to help heal people in this futuristic world several hundred years after a pandemic killed 95% or so of the population. No machines, medical devices or drugs to cure the sick people. Terrific story!
I really enjoy the author's stories and methodology. I've read every one of his books and found them all to be wonderful! I'm amazed at what could be possible with limited psychic power. The Hylis family are well developed characters by now, so I recommend you start at the beginning of the series.
Laurence Dahners is a great story teller. Weaving medical science and special energy to Heal where Healing would not otherwise occur, sparks creative thought, hope, and imagination which may also help others develop tools and techniques to accomplish the same objectives; or discover their own talents.
This story of a family of healers who lives in the after we blow up the world up and revert back to the Middle Ages is a very entertaining story. I only disagree with the unrealistic teleportation ability being a possible human talent.
Enjoyed this book as most books by Dahners. His character development is excellent and he makes you really care about them. I thought the travelling chapters were a bit too long but other than that it was an excellent continuation of the Hyllis family series.
Another great story. Love the combination of tech and story. I recommend the series should be read in the order it was written. I am will be watching for the next book.
