Intense and gripping as it is redemptive. The horror of what this man went through as young man and carried through him with every surgery, recovery, and questioning--Mark McDonough reveals a faith that has been refined literally by fire.

If anyone has gone through a series of trials and is struggling to see God in the bigger picture of "why" this book is a good reminder that God is still there. In the hurt, pain, and unanswered questions. Struggling with faith, especially when dealing with unexpected tragedy is a heavy burden but the author guides readers to the hope of healing through his own testimony.

It's not an easy read but a powerful one.

McDonough's experiences are alternately horrifying and inspiring (he was burned very severely when he was a teen and most of the book is about how he came back from that).  That being said, a lot of the medical details in this book turned my stomach and it seemed like the author was patting himself on the back a little too much. (Idk.  Could have just been me.)  An amazing story, no doubt, but not really my thing. (I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.)

If I were to describe this book using only three words, I would say that it's inspiring, raw, and emotional.
Inspiring because it is that. This is a sad and intense story of survival and healing and it was so inspiring to read about how McDonough overcame that and came to know God in a fuller and better way. It was inspiring to read how the author overcame the pain he experienced and used his experiences to help others. Yes, this was a very inspiring book.
Raw because this is a story of a boy surviving a house fire. McDonough doesn't gloss over the hard parts, he doesn't soften the facts for us. No, the author tells it as it was, the raw and painful truth of what happening and how he overcame that. So yes, it's raw and gritty and at some points I was a bit appalled, but it was real, so real.
Emotional because, like I've said before, this is the story of a survivor, but not everyone he loved survived. Just reading about the pain he went through both when he was young and because of the fire made me want to cry. Reading about the loss, terrible loss was difficult because I cannot even imagine going through the same thing, I don't want to imagine it. So yes, it was emotional too, but in the very best of ways.
In the end, this story was wonderful. I think anyone who loves reading memoirs (or really just anyone in general) would enjoy this story and I think that there is something for everyone to take away from it.

What enables one person to overcome adversity while that same adversity destroys another? We’ve all encountered some form of adversity at one point or another. Coming out on the other side of it only makes us stronger. But I can’t imagine overcoming the amount of adversity Dr. McDonough has seen in his life.

Burned over 65% of his body at 16 in a house fire, a near death experience while on the operating table, debilitating car crash, immediate family members’ unexpected deaths, childhood immune system disease GBS, addiction, open heart surgery....how does one cope. Dr. McDonough would suggest a strong belief in God is the foundation for his successful rise out of immense pain.

The book never feels preachy and is written by a medical doctor yet approachable for the layman. Matter-of-fact and billed as a memoir, the story starts with the house fire which claimed the lives of his youngest brother and mother in 1976 and left him coping with horrible burns over much of his body. It recounts his vivid memories of the pain and struggle to survive after the event, as well as documenting his ongoing battle to integrate back into everyday life. The fact this book is written over 40+ years since the event and he recalls the most minute details with total alacrity only illustrates the depth to which these memories have scarred his soul as well as his body. This can’t have been an easy book to write. It certainly isn’t easy to read.

There are no pictures in the book. I had wondered why not and can only assume this is a calculated decision by Dr. McDonough. The images you and I can conjure up in our minds are likely more brutal than those any photographs could offer. You FEEL the author’s pain and suffering in relentless waves and detail. This is not meant to be visually graphic—the takeaway here should be the resilience of the human soul and the beauty of living.

The life path Dr. McDonough chooses after dealing with so much pain, loss, and disappointment is truly uplifting and inspiring. There is no one here who can say how they would react to these exact stimuli and events. But that’s the message here. There is a way out and the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. There is hope, even at your bleakest hour. Take it from a man who has endured the very worst life has to offer.

The narrative is succinct and well written, not overwritten. It jumps between the long days of rehabilitation after the fire and Dr. McDonough’s upbringing and family life. It serves to amplify the losses he has endured and gives the reader more perspective on his struggle by learning more about his family. It reminds us what he has to lose the whole time he is struggling to keep living for the next minute. As an uplifting, soul restoring, life verifying tale it most definitely succeeds.

Their are many stories of people dealing with pain and suffering and coming out stronger for it. I don’t say that to trivialize any of them. But there are far more which end poorly than tales like this one which are triumphant and inspiring. It should make every reader question what is possible and what this life holds for us, as well as to help appreciate the resiliency of the human soul.

5 out of 5 stars. Higher if I could.

With my love and focus on fiction, true stories, stories of courage in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, can capture my attention quickly, for it is the love of story that keeps me reading. Adding the true human experience to story creates satisfying reading encounter.

Forged through Fire: A Reconstructive Surgeon’s Story of Survival, Faith, and Healing is a stunning glimpse of Mark D. McDonough’s life story, a story of tragic circumstances that engendered a tenacity and strong faith. At the tender age of 5 years, young McDonough was stricken with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a debilitating neurological illness that required months of physical and occupational therapy. He recovered fully.

At 16 years, his father went on a business trip, leaving young Mark “in charge”; awakening to heavy smoke within days after his father left, Mark began yet another fight for life, his and that of his siblings and mother. Helping 3 brothers escape the raging fire that had engulfed their home, Mark began battling through flames and heavy smoke to save his mother and youngest brother. Becoming unconscious just inside the garage door, he was rescued; his next clear awareness of anything was pain, excruciating pain. He had experienced burns over 60% of his body.

Forged through Fire, is one of the most difficult life stories I’ve read, yet Mark D. McDonough survived the extremely painful process of recovering from burns, plus over 30 surgeries to correct the damage. His body survived, but how was this young man able to emotionally and mentally survive the horrific tragedy that had befallen him. A tragedy that that also resulted in the death of his mother and younger brother. Faith, a faith grown through tragedy, not in spite of it or walking around it, but through it.

Dr. Mark D. McDonough is that young 16 year man who fought his way through the fire to become a respected reconstructive surgeon. Currently, Dr. McDonough continues to practice reconstructive surgery part-time, sharing his story of Forged through Fire with others who are experiencing their own pain, walking through the fire with them.

This is a very emotional, yet uplifting story. Mark McDonough shares his life with us, the ups and the downs. He went through a lot as a young child with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a debilitating neurological disease, where he ended up in an iron lung. Later, at the age of 17, he survived a house fire that claimed the lives of his mother and youngest brother and left him with extensive burns over 60% of his body. This is his story of his recovery, his doubts, his faith and love. Dealing not only with multiple surgeries, one when he died and returned to life, but he became an alcoholic, using alcohol originally to dull the pain. With all the experiences he dealt with, he knew he wanted to help people who had suffered burns, or body disfigurement from illness or accident. His journey was intense, sad at times and very emotional. He also discusses how this affects the whole family, with some difficult situations evolving. Growing in his faith as he dealt with one setback after another, was indeed inspirational. It was not easy, yet it was what kept him going. Each time he listened to what God was telling him and watched for signs that answered his prayers, he moved forward with his life.

My husband suffered bad electrical burns shortly after we were married and had to undergo several surgeries. He was in the hospital for 3 months and had to have a flap graph surgery, so as I read about this in the book, I made a personal connection. I am also familiar with the case involving his sons at the end of the book and the details in that part of the story, gave me more insight into that case. This was a book that I had to read over several days, as I had to take breaks from reading it. It is a very emotional and heartbreaking story, but the inspiration I got and the strength of spirit that Mark D. McDonough shows is amazing. I definitely recommend this book. The publisher generously provided me a copy of this book through Just Read. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

This book sucked me in like oxygen in a backdraft—sudden and intense and overpowering.
Ordinarily not a fan of non-fiction, I consumed this book with keen interest. Dr. McDonough’s writing is vivid and inviting, placing the reader right in the middle of the action.
Dr. McDonough’s story reads like, well, a story—always something happening, always moving through the author’s life; if I hadn’t known otherwise, I would have assumed it a fascinating work of fiction.
I appreciated the glimpses into Dr. McDonough’s childhood, his family tales; it made the story more complete, more robust. Written, of course, in first person, the story became even more personal as I read, like a friend describing each incident and anecdote to me.
This story struck a deep chord in this reviewer—six years ago, at age thirty-five, my oldest son was burned on his hand and face. Though far from the injury Dr. McDonough suffered, I witnessed the extreme pain my son endured. Happily, he was treated with his own stem cells and needed no skin grafts.

Mark McDonough relays his extremely moving life story in this sometimes hard to read memoir. He vividly describes his life as a burn victim and not only the excruciating physical pain and procedures he endured, but also the emotional challenges he faced in the aftermath of the horrific fire that killed part of his family. I found some of the details just too horrific (so be warned) but also know that his journey through this will hopefully become an encouragement to others who may be facing similar circumstances. He calls his near-death experience on the operating table a “mountaintop encounter” that profoundly and forever changed him. He discovered that God is real and with him all the time. He had to keep remembering this as his journey continues struggling with alcoholism, career paths, and family tragedies.

He owes his life to the incredible work of surgeon Dr. Frat, who played an integral part in his healing process. I loved his quote “It nearly cost you your life, after all; why not make the best of what is or what will be? It’s definitely more constructive and productive than focusing on the pain you’ve endured or the losses you have sustained.”

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. The opinions stated in this review are my own.

4.5/5 stars.

This book was fascinating, one that I couldn't put down. I'd say that is a testament to this book in and of itself, because it's nonfiction and deals with a lot of heavy topics. Dr. McDonough explains the trauma he experienced with a very vivid and succinct vocabulary. While he describes a lot of medical procedures in the book, he also takes the time to explain them to readers who might not have an extensive medical background. I found the book to be not only inspiring, but also very informational.

As I read this book, I found myself aghast at the amount of trauma that Dr. McDonough faced. As is mentioned in the synopsis, he loses his mother and young brother to a house fire that also burns most of his body. That's just the beginning of the laundry list of setbacks and injuries that he faced on the road to recovery. That he was able to maintain and grow in his faith is astounding and very inspirational. I won't go into detail about everything that he mentions in the book - it's just something you have to read for yourself to believe - but as I said, it's an excellent read. If you're looking for healing or facing health problems, it's a good book to pick up. He also describes a near-death experience which is amazing to read: a moment where he's reassured that his lost family members are safe with God and that he has to keep fighting for recovery because his life isn't finished yet.

I think the only thing that I found difficult in this book is the pacing. Sometimes, especially earlier in the book, the author jumps back and forth between events, making it a little difficult to keep each event straight as far as how they happened chronologically. (And there are a lot of events that take place.) That issue seems to resolve itself later and with further explanation, however.

In one life-changing night, all-American boy Mark is forced to grapple with a devastating loss while also fighting his way through weeks of catastrophic pain. In two small circumstances that are based on actual events but feel like they could be plot points in a fictional drama, the family home erupts into fire while Mark’s father is away on business. As the oldest, he takes it upon himself to attempt to rescue his four younger brothers and mother, even though it means pushing through the intensifying flames in nothing more than the swimsuit he fell asleep in.
While in the midst of questioning and doubt, Mark meets a doctor and nurse who, along with healing his body, also heal his spirit. They show him a genuine love and ask him questions that go beyond his physical healing. It is this re-introduction to God that truly gives Mark the strength to push through the mind-numbing pain and accept the deaths of his mother and youngest brother, finally leaving his guilt for not being able to save them behind.
Full of honesty and transparency, Mark recounts how his beginning struggles have impacted his own and his surviving family’s lives since the night of the fire. Unlike some memoirs, Mark doesn’t settle for a sitcom happy ending, instead truthfully baring all to the reader. However, I did feel like some anecdotes were too brief and may have been better left out (such as his when he mentions his RA, Katie) while others didn’t have the level of detail I hoped for (Penny’s increasing involvement with his family being a key one).
Mark’s indelible memoir will leave the reader inspired and struck by his ability to overcome the odds, not just once, but many times, thanks to his persistence and relationship with God.
I would like to appreciatively thank Just Read Tours, Revell, and Dr. Mark McDonough for selecting me to receive an advanced copy of Forged Through Fire. This did not have an impact on my review.

What an unbelievable and amazing personal story of perseverance and faith! I was spellbound throughout each page as the author takes you through his life of trauma and unpredictable happenings. I cannot imagine going through this, but he lays it all out so you can feel what it was like. I encourage everyone to read this! It will challenge your faith and give you hope that nothing is beyond God. You will survive. Such a testimony to us all! Someday I would love to shake this man’s hand and thank him for taking the time to share his story. This is the epitome of encouragement and faith!!

Wow, what a story of redemption, love and forgiveness. “Forged through Fire” is the raw and unvarnished story of a man searching for meaning and answers in the midst of great trials.” Jesus certainly does not promise His followers a life free from trials or pain, but the author’s faith is not in any shape perfect, he spent time away from God, but through his trials and pain he learned that God is always with him. When he was 16, Mark was in a catastrophic house fire that claimed the lives of his mother and youngest brother. Suffering burns over 65% of his body, his first thoughts turned to death being better than the suffering he was in.
If you or a loved one has suffered from personal trauma, disease or loss that has tested or stolen your faith and exhausted your emotional resources, you’ll find real hope in his redemptive story. I went through a dark time as a care giver for my grandmother who passed away from dementia. To say it was easy would be an understatement. Believing in God and trusting in Him does not mean our lives will be easy or we won’t face struggles. Romans 8:28- And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called to his purpose. Mark shared his near-death experience which made his faith stronger in the end. With each reconstructive surgery after the other his faith was tested. Still, he became a physical therapist, physician, and later a plastic reconstructive surgeon.
I highly recommend “Forged through Fire.” If Mark preserved through all his trials and pain there is no reason why we can’t.

Wow, what a story Mark McDonough shares in Forged Through Fire. And none of it is fiction.

As McDonough recounts the tragic house fire that resulting in the deaths of one of his brothers and his mother and left him with burns over 65% of his body, readers get a taste of the pain and suffering this family experienced. The way the author weaves chapters of his family life (including stories of his childhood, a look into the family dynamics, friendships, and more) with his suffering, surgeries, recovery, and near-death experience helps alleviate some of the heaviness of the descriptive process to heal his body.

Yet, I found myself shaking my head in sympathy at how much this family had suffered only for McDonough to drop another tragedy or fact about the fire I didn’t see coming.

The testimony of this family confirms that God does not promise His followers a life excluded from pain. McDonough’s faith is not perfect, he’s had periods spent away from God or in the desert, but he’s learned to lean on God through hardships, pain, sorrow, and disappointment. It’s a testimony I won’t soon forget.

"It is my belief that God allows certain experiences-some rather painful- to shape and grow us in character consistent with His desires and plans for us."

What a perfect way to sum up Forged Through Fire--- a memoir by Mark D. McDonough MD. Surviving a tragic fire as a teenager that left his body over 65% covered in burns, this book tells his story of overcoming what would be just one of many medical emergencies through his life. It is these occurrences that brought him to practice medicine--- particularly plastic surgery so that he could help other burn victims rise from the ashes and get a new chance at life- just as he was given.

While this book was certainly enlightening as to the pain and turmoil a burn victim must face, I must admit it was a bit hard to read at times. He goes into rather detailed descriptions as to what he felt during that time, as well as the procedures and care that it required. I could certainly see that appealing to those who are looking to learn more about the medical aspect, and again it did make it very eye opening to hear the extent of it. Still, I have a rather weak stomach so there were points where I admit I had to skip through some of the details a bit. Again, that's just my own issue though.

We've so often heard about God bring beauty from ashes--- using the negatives to bring about His plans, and I think Mark's story is a beautifully told story and quite literal example of just that.

As someone who grew up with several relatives that worked in the medical field, I often heard stories about the horrors that burned victims dealt with.

This book delves into the painfully story of a burn victim, Mark McDonough, MD and his story of what he went through during the tragic house fire that took the lives of his mother and one of his brothers, and left him with burns over 65% of his body and the long, painful recovery that followed.

This is a raw and emotional read. There is so much more going on within these pages than just a story of a burn victim. Faith to lean on God through the hardships runs deeply though this story. This is an impactful and inspirational story that will stick with you long after you finish reading.

This book opened my eyes to the incredible pain that a burn victim goes through and how long the road to recovery is for them. I could imagine it being painful, but I never stopped to consider just how painful and difficult the journey was. Mark does a wonderful job of sharing his story, which will help those who either have gone through a similar experience, or those who have a loved one going through recovering from severe burns. This book is also helpful, since he shares the ways he responded to being burned and going through the recovery. At just 16 years old when it happened, the experience really molded him into the man and doctor he became. This is a well written book.

At age 17, Mark McDonough survived a catastrophic house fire that left him with burns over 60% of his body and claimed the lives of some of his family members. His journey to recovering was fraught with much frustration and personal trials. And, even once he was considered mostly recovered physically he had to deal with many more emotionally taxing situations with family members and once again more personal trials. Amidst all his physical and emotional pain and suffering he found a personal relationship with God and he doesn't shy away from sharing about that in his book. His story is encouraging and hopeful and it is not one to be missed. I'm glad that I had the chance to read his story and I definitely won't forget it any time soon.

My Review of Forged Through Fire by Mark McDonough MD: Wow! This is an intense, powerful, and inspiring story. Following the author's story of suffering, sadness, and survival. Written in a way that pulls you in and shows you an incredible story. I don't often read biographies but I am glad I picked up this one, it was a wonderful and horrifying (can you imagine being burned on over 60 percent of your body?) read.

Sharing about the burns in great detail, and alcohol, alcoholism, surgeries, suicide, murder, and lots of trauma, (it is really sad too,) which makes it a book for 16 up.

I don't know what I expected going into this story but the emotional rollercoaster took me by surprise. I made it through a few chapters without much emotional response but was surprised when one scene after another brought tears to my eyes. I enjoyed the layout of the book, how the author jumped back and forth between past and present with each chapter. I was also surprised to hear he battled a disease that beside's son now battles and it gave me hope. I also found hope in the fact that I could on some level relate to the author and his mental, emotional and spiritual struggles through time of great suffering. I too suffer from chronic illness and depression and anxiety. I'm thankful for the honor of being able to read this story and pray it gives hope to others as it has me.

When this book first came out, I knew I wanted to read it, but I never gave myself the time to. It was not until I encountered my own struggles with survival, faith, and healing from a personal injury that I sustained, costing me a lot in life, that I finally brought myself to pick up this book. From the moment I read the opening lines, I was hooked.

Dr. McDonough has such an eloquent way with words that I had to remind myself: this is a book about a real mans life experiences and not a work of fiction. His prose and his attention to detail throughout the novel dictating the events of his life were so captivating and moving, it was hard to put it down, even in the most gut-wrenching of moments.

McDonough has encountered many a nightmare in his lifetime, all of which could have turned his life for the worst at any given moment. In some cases, those low moments were accompanied by decisions that were unhealthy- such as alcoholism-, while in others, there were moments of surrender and strength beyond what the human mind can comprehend.

Isn't that the point of it all? The redemption story of Jesus Christ? We were never promised an easy life and truthfully, we will never get one. It is a hard truth we all must acknowledge at one point or another. The older we get, the harder the trials come, and the greater the decisions we must make. But Jesus offers us a way out of the holes that the enemy would leave us stuck in. It does not always mean we will be taken out of those holes- sometimes, we need to face those trials in order to realize our true nature and our need for reliance upon the Lord-, but that we will not be alone in our darkest of hours. This autobiography is a beautiful telling of that redemptive story.

There were several things I related to in the struggles I have faced with my own recovery journey, which made me resonate with this novel even more. Though our experiences and injuries were not the same- no two people's journey ever is-, some of the things McDonough encountered in his life are relevant to the journey I have also been on. In one instance, I relate to the moment where he realized alcohol had a medicinal effect in that it numbed the pain one feels in their body and makes them feel lighter, despite their circumstances. I am not proud to admit I also recognized this early on, and though I do not drink often, I have gone beyond what I normally would have allowed myself before this injury became part of my story. I also have had the same struggle of not being able to sleep without some sort of sedative medication since my injury, which can also take a dangerous kind of toll on a persons body, an effect that is especially unpleasant in a young woman twenty four years of age.

Yet, while I face these issues, one of the greatest things of all that has come from this journey, has been my redefined vision and relationship with Jesus and what that looks like in my life. I have lost a great many things in this season of my life (the ability to work, the ability to drive, and even friends, chief among them), but I have also gained a great deal. I have had the time to devote to have true relationship with the Lord and learning who He is and how He loves me, even in this Job season of life. I have learned what does and does not belong in my world and how to better recognize when some things- or some people- should not take up space in my life. I have learned greater patience than I ever thought I could have and more grace than I ever thought possible. And I have even learned to be okay in this present season, even though it has been a long one.

All of these things I have learned and the new things I have acquired has begun to pay off, as after a long period of time seeing doctors who either refused to listen or continued to chant the phrase, "Be patient. It takes time.", the Lord led me to doctors, who, like McDonough describes in his book, take great care in listening and helping their patient get from Point Z to Point A once again. At a time where I eventually wanted to give up and just become resigned to my life being an unfortunate series of events until the Lord felt fit to call me home, He instead showed me that the faith of a friend or the faith like a mustard seed, can indeed, move mountains. While my journey is still ongoing, I know that there is a silver lining at that the end of this season and the beginning of a new, flourishing one, will eventually come.

To Dr. McDonough, thank you for your courage and obedience to the Lord in sharing this story with the world. I have truly been touched by the experiences that brought you through this life and your faith and trust in the Lord that, indeed, everything does happen for a reason, and it is our choices and our actions that can help determine what may happen next. Thank you for not giving up on your story when times get hard. I have had a lot of naysayers and doubters in my healing journey. But it is because of people like you, your willingness to pursue the Lord in dark times and your story of overcoming the most challenging of obstacles, to using that story to help others in need, that I have hope in good people and, most importantly, our powerful and loving Savior.

God Bless you on your continued journey and many prayers to you and your beautiful family.

In 1976, author Mark McDonough, as a teen, survived a house fire that tragically took the lives of his mother and youngest brother while also leaving 65% of his own body covered in deep burns. McDonough uses Forged Through Fire to share with readers his story of painful healing --- both emotionally and physically --- and the life lessons learned along the way.

In addition to surviving the house fire, McDonough also includes stories of other medical challenges he's survived that required similar therapy programs, from contracting Guillian-Barre Syndrome as a small boy (which led to him temporarily being placed in an iron lung) to being surprised by a stroke as a young married man. If that's not enough, he also has a tale of falling prey to but eventually overcoming a period of alcoholism --- something he always promised himself would never be part of his life, despite coming from two parents who also struggled with alcohol addiction. McDonough's experiences with addiction begin as a way to self-medicate the pain of his injuries. That particular pain management option begins to lose its allure for him, but once a habit develops, the process out is a tricky one, requiring much dedication and patience.

WARNING, READERS: THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH! I have a pretty strong stomach for most things and even I was cringing and squirming through several of the medical procedure descriptions shared here. It's not ALL rough. I mean, there are passages describing some of his therapy including learning to speak and swallow again because his throat lining was so badly damaged in the fire. He mentions developing pressure sores from being kept supine for so long while waiting for his skin grafts to take. Description-wise, those parts aren't so bad, but the OTHER parts --- the cleaning of the wounds (when he talks of having the cleanings done with Betodine --- I had my own memory recall from that one! The brief but intense BURN of that stuff! *shudder* It is effective though!), the bandage dressing, anathesia not taking and him waking up during one of his surgeries.... yeah!

Keep in mind, this memoir is written by a doctor, so it naturally does run heavy with medical terminology, but to his credit McDonough does a pretty solid job of quickly following up with an explanation in layman's terms. He also shows incredible talent for getting his readers to truly feel the struggle and anguish of his painful journey to "being okay", you might say. McDonough doesn't hold back about keeping things real regarding his emotions, frustrations, the trying path of learning to overcome new physical limitations, and ultimately the joy in small victories during this arduous experience in healing. And healing wasn't just about his skin resealing or him regaining movement. McDonough also gets into the shift in the bonds between him, his father, and his surviving brothers, as well as the guilt associated with the amount of attention his outpatient recuperation period required of everyone.

After intensive physical and occupational therapy sessions (one story notes he was able to finish high school, in part, because the school accepted his hours of therapy as PE credits), McDonough is inspired to become a physical therapist himself. His experiences with patients in this field later encourage him to take it further, becoming a reconstructive surgeon. With his work in medicine, and now this memoir, McDonough hopes that his story can inspire others working to overcome various traumas to continue fighting the good fight.

On a sidenote, kudos to him for closing his acknowledgements section with a shout-out to EMS workers. As a firefighter wife, I had to smile at this! :-)

I was also not expecting him to close the book with an eyewitness account of the murder of singer / Youtuber Christina Grimmie!

Honestly, I'm surprised this hasn't been optioned as a movie, but I won't be surprised if I see it is later.

Thank you in advance to Just Read Publicity Tours, Revell, and Mark Donough, MD for a copy of this book to review. It was a pleasure and honor to review this book. I was not compensated in any way, nor was a positive view required.

All thoughts are my own.

“Forged Through Fire” by Mark McDonough, MD is his personal memoir of how a tragedy when he was 16 transformed his life and how his faith in God guided him through the dark days of recovery, rehabilitation, and finding his own path. This book extensively talks about God and faith. Though I had no issues with it and loved reading this book despite the topic that started Mark’s journey.

When he was 16, Mark was in a catastrophic house fire that claimed the lives of his mother and youngest brother. Suffering burns over 65% of his body, his first thoughts turned to death being better than the suffering he was in.

During one surgery, he recalls the vivid details of the surgery – feeling the pain and being acutely aware of what was being said and done. It was that same surgery that lead to a “near-death” experience which McDonough beautifully describes. With that experience he realized that God would be there to help us survive our trials and experiences and that he was meant to survive the ordeal that had almost consumed his life. With each reconstructive surgery after the other his faith was tested.

Still, he became a physical therapist, physician, and later a plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Through McDonough’s book, the reader learns about his past and even that of his family’s. He talks about perseverance and trials. His life and journey have not been perfect. He has battled Guillain-Barré syndrome as a child, the fire, alcoholism, a stroke, and the loss of two siblings (one to suicide and the other to a vertebral artery aneurysm), later his father to cancer.

Still, despite all the challenges, he remains humble and inspiring. He is also the proud father of three sons – Connor, Riley, and Toby who form the popular band “Before You Exit”.

McDonough’s book is a testament to his faith, though not perfect, always a work in progress. After another health setback, he was forced to scale back his medical practice but still serves as a volunteer at local clinics.

“Forged Through Fire” is an inspiring read that serves as hope for those who
always wonder “why”, have been tested, or need a reminder that God is always there for us. We don’t always know the plans God has for us, but he will be there with us during the trials. Pain is not the end of the story by any means.
McDonough, like the Phoenix, has risen literally from the ashes to physically heal people and help guide them as well.

This book will certainly have triggers for those who’ve lost loved ones by fire, accidents, suicide, PTSD. It is a difficult, challenging, and beautiful read – possibly serving to heal the spirit.

I rarely recommend books, but I do highly recommend this book.

Mark McDonough went through more suffering, emotional and physical, in his life they numerous people put together. As a child he faced the debilitating effects and a long healing from Guillain-Barre syndrome. One would think that was enough for one lifetime. When he was 16 he faced an even greater hardship. A house fire took the life of the beloved mother and little brother. He experienced burns over 65% of his body. There was even more tragedy for him to face in future years which he shared in his story.
This was a very moving and thought provoking book for me. The author’s transparency in his thoughts and feelings took such courage to put on paper. His descriptions of the year’s pain, discouragement and agony during the medical treatments he experienced were incredible. I could sense at points the intensity of the pain and emotional distress was beyond what he could find words to describe. As I read I thought several times, “I would have just given up.” Yes, he wavered, doubted, wanted to quit and just throw the towel in on life, but he did not!
He grew stronger in the Lord and learned each time to rely on Him in great greater ways. None of this is sugar coated, trust me! Not only did the author prevail over insurmountable tragedies used those sufferings to help others. He against all odds became a plastic and reconstructive surgeon to help burn victims like himself. What a gift I know that has been to all his patients. He had the insight and compassion other doctors could not.
I found myself ashamed for my pity parties and despair over what I have faced. I don’t think I can ever look at my problems the same without thinking of Mark. I am even having problems finding the words to write this review! This is a book you want to read! Dr. McDonough’s story is more than just a publication to read. It is a testimony and encouragement to everyone facing trials. I can tell it was written out of love to all those who read it.

"...we never know exactly what's in store on this journey in life. That has been true repeatedly in my story. As many before me have said, we will fall, but how we rise again is what matters. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, adversity can make us stronger and better with God's help."

"Forged Through Fire" is the story of Mark McDonough's life, and it is a read that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Mark goes through unimaginable trauma when a fire destroys his childhood home, taking the life of his mother and brother, and leaving him severely burned. The reader of this incredible story has the change to come along of Mark as he suffers, has a near death experience, recovers, and ultimately, learns to trust in God. The story continues through his adult life until the present day, and also flashes back to experiences from his childhood. Mark ends up becoming a surgeon who is able to help other patients who went through similar trauma, and it was so uplifting to see how far he came.

One thing that I really appreciated about this book was that after Mark's near death experience and when he began to trust in God, it was not wrapped in a neat little bow with a fairy tale ending. Believing in God and trusting in Him does not mean that we will not have struggles in this world. In fact, Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33. Mark talked about his troubles even after his near death experience, and in the end, it made his faith even stronger. This book will have you crying for the pain that Mark feels, as well as cheering at his successes. I highly recommend this book to strengthen your faith, and to read about a wonderful role model of Christian faith!

This book just tore my heart because of its subject matter. Dr. McDonough was a teen tasked with taking care of his family when his dad was out of town. That’s when the fire occurred that burned him badly and killed two members of his family. This is the story of the pain he endured on his way to healing, both physically and mentally. It is also the story of a young man who learns to cry out to God. He suffered the worst way imaginable and was able to come through with a new vision and purpose for his life. The story was hard for me to read because my father was burned badly when I was a young child. I knew that my dad spent over a year in a burn unit and had scars for the rest of his life. This book gave me insight into the horrible treatment that my father had to undergo and, honestly, there were times when I could not see the print through my tears. I am thankful that this memoir gave me this insight and I think that all who want to empathize with victims of great tragedy should read it; it will certainly open your eyes to the suffering that burn victims go through and the changes that they have to accept in their lives. My father passed away two years ago; I wish that I had had this book before he died so I could talk to him and just tell him that I understood his pain more clearly. I hope that all who read this review will pick up this book and read it with an open mind and an open heart.

Going on vacation over Christmas I was looking for a book that would hold my interest and be one that I couldn't put down. I selected Forged By Fire by Dr. Mark McDonough and I found exactly what I was looking for. It drew me in on the very first page and I didn't want to put it down. Dr. McDonough describes the tragedy of a house fire that nearly destroyed his life and his family when he was a teenager. The ensuing years were a testimony of struggle, hardship, faith and recovery. This book is the result of his years of personal recovery both physically and emotionally. He peppers his narrative with occasional medical information without it being too "over the head" for the average non-medical reader. His journey of faith is the center of importance to this book but doesn't come across as preachy but more personal. It touched me on a personal level with the gentle reminder of how important it is to seek God's leading for our lives even when things seem hopelessly amiss, He is still in control of what is going on in our lives, if we let Him. It does read like a narrative because it has little to no dialog, but it is so well written, you really don't notice the lack of dialog. If you like books that describe a person's journey through some sort of medical issue, or if you like books where the author details his growth through faith, this book is for you! I loved every page and I look forward to meeting Dr. McDonough one day in heaven to tell him how much his book helped me get through a difficult time in my own life by reminding me to trust God even when we can't understand the events happening in our lives. This book will leave you in awe of his strength and encouraged by his faith!

I've read several memoirs about injury, pain, suffering, and healing but wow Forged Through Fire by Dr. Mark D. McDonough is very emotionally engaging.

Surviving a house fire at 16 which claimed the lives of his mother and younger brother and suffering burns in 65% of his body, Dr. Mark recounts his healing, both physically and internally. Dr. Mark has lived through many painful experiences, besides surviving the fire and undergoing numerous reconstructive surgeries, he was also diagnosed with a rare muscular disease as a child, he survived a car wreck, alcohol addiction, a stroke, and deaths of both parents and 3 brothers.

Through it all, he clung to his faith and found redemption, healing, and happiness. He used his experience to motivate him to pursue a career as a physical therapist, physician, and reconstructive surgeon. This book is a powerful read and a testament to human survival against all odds. Readers will find this memoir very encouraging especially those who are suffering and family of those who suffer.

I would have liked to see a little more faith content, it would have been even more inspirational if we could have seen how the author overcame with God's power at work in his life. From what I read, it seems the author is Catholic which was a bummer because I was expecting to read how God is credited for this amazing testimony of healing. But it's still inspirational and will no doubt, touch many lives.

Mark McDonough didn't just face a trial by fire when he was a young man, he lost his mom and younger brother as well. His harrowing story is told within these pages. He has seen what pain and heartbreak first hand in his life. Since his youth he has managed to become the man he is now, both known for his faith as well as work as a doctor, helping patients heal in their lives as well. So, when I say Forged through Fire is a hard but worthwhile book to read I mean it with my whole heart.

He hasn't simply written this book as a wonderful storyteller, but to show his faith for what it is: tested by fire. I find that it's worth being read. I couldn't begin to say more about a man who has made it his life's work to helping others in their difficult times. As a teenage he suffered from burns that covered 65-70% of his body. Those who worked on him weren't even sure he would make it considering he tried to save his mom and youngest brother from that horrific night's fire.

Saying this book is a good and wonderful read doesn't do it a great deal of justice. It's heart-wrenching in the detail of someone who remembers it as if it happened yesterday, which I'm sure he'd say, "Yes, I remember it as though it were." At the same time it's worth picking up and seeing what faith looks like from those places where it seems nothing else will work. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest review.

This is an inspiring story of how one man endured through many trials and came through to give back to people who were injured in the same way he was. It’s a story of finding ways to cope that did and didn’t work. It’s a story of clinging to God through unimaginable pain and finding His grace really is sufficient.

The first two-thirds of the book go back and forth between life before the tragedy and the recovery and life after. The last section looks more at his adult life and education and work with other trauma cases. I expected there would be more emphasis on this. My only real disappointment was that there weren’t pictures in the book. When I read an autobiography, I like to see pictures of the people and places and events I’m reading about.

This story is hard to read at times. The suffering was so intense. The regret the dad must have felt for not putting batteries in the fire alarms and getting them right back up was heartwrenching. This family endured A LOT. I think it’s good to read such stories and to see how God was faithful to give strength for each difficult step. I appreciated the reminder to look for God’s presence even when it’s hard to imagine He could allow something like this. It’s a thoughtful read that doesn’t offer trite answers but offers hope that comes from going through the fire and coming out the other side.

Thank you to Revell for providing me with a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This very interesting book is an autobiography of Dr. McDonough. He describes the horrific experience of being burned in a house fire that took the lives of his mother and youngest brother. He recounts the terrible times he went through, not only in the fire but earlier as a child, after the fire, and in several instances afterward. His faith was severely tested, but he came through as gold. He became a physical therapist and then a reconstructive surgeon.

Dr. McDonough went through a lot, including a stroke and addiction. He could have given up but continued with God's help and became successful. This book tells his journey. I love reading Christian biographies because there is so much hope and blessing along the way. It uplifts and encourages you as you read.

At first, I was turned off by the title and afraid to read the book, because I don't like to read about pain and suffering, but I am glad I read this book. It is a great book and I'm sure I'll read it again.

(Please Note: Although a copy of this book was given to me to review by Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, the opinions expressed are my own.)
