It would appear that this book has not had a large distribution network as I am the first to rate or review it four long decades after it was written.
The book centres around Vernon Tyree who after a series of circumstances found himself as an early settler in Texas, initially with a small farm before expanding to a ranch. Tyree's history in the army gave him the experience to be the leader of the local militia fighting first the Indians and towards the end of the book the Mexicans, who at the time ruled Texas.
The story follows Tyree's trials and tribulations as well as his happier moments such as his marriage and the success of his farm/ranch. The cast of characters is quite small and centre on his brother and others involved with the farm.
The story itself is reasonable bit it is bitty, as if the author took large periods of time between writing segments and so there is a lack of flow. Some parts are very detailed and yet others are almost dismissed, the death of a central character is covered in little over a sentence; no lead up, just gone.
If you do see this dusty old book in a second hand store it is worth a few days of your life to give it a read.
