Kathleen (Kayti) is an FBI agent who placed in the top five percent of her class. One of the funny things about Kayti is that she has a heart of gold in a hard hearted job. She sure has some skills when it comes to beating up the bad guys. No one she works with knows her boss is also her aunt. Her aunt wants to protect her and partners her with Shane Murphy. I loved how Kayti talks your leg off when she is nervous which drives Murphy crazy. The two fall into a case where a Senator’s daughter gets kidnapped. Kayti was suppose to be on a stake out and not get into any danger. I think danger followed her! I loved watching Kayti and Murphy fall in love. There are some funny parts as well as some heartwarming scenes that take place. There is also some suspenseful action taking place that had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t help but love Kayti with her personality and the love she shows some of the teenagers in the story. There are a few secrets that come out too. I loved the book and strongly encourage you to read it.

Ehh bit tricky to rate. Although I enjoyed it I was a bit put off by the underlying message on gender roles. It actually read like something I would have read (and loved) in the 1980’s and not questioned how inherently sexist it was. Kayti is rookie FBI agent, top of her class, kick-ass fighter but very compassionate and caring. I don’t think this is a negative but it is presented as if while competent she is not really suited to field work as she is too ‘soft’ and naive for the job. Shane falls for her so doesn’t want her in the field cause he wants to ‘protect’ her. She is ok with that so after solving case to save the girl (although requires H to ‘save’ her at last minute) decides field work is not for her so they can like happily ever after. Probably my favourite part of the story was Kayti’s relationship with Mark – the son of a criminal she tries to protect (from his father) and ends up taking in after he returns the favour.

4.5 Undercover turned into a kidnapping rescue Stars 🌟

Murphy gets partnered with a young woman who is a yapper😂 Unbeknownst to him it’s only because he’s attractive that he makes her nervous....hence the yapping❣️Unfortunately, trouble seems to follow poor Kayti where ever she goes and Murphy luckily doesn’t always have to bail her out😅

This story was sweet, funny at times, sometimes serious and had a few surprises I didn’t expect. Suffice to say it was a good holiday season read and gives me faith in humanity and giving selflessly once again😁

So Enjoyed

This one had a little different twist to it, but kept up the intrigue through the whole story. I like how the characters show so many sides of themselves.

3.5* - ARC Review – Good story, questionable characters
Having read several books by this author in this series, I enthusiastically requested the ARC from Hidden Gems when I saw this book listed. What I like most about this series is that you do not have to read them in any order as they each take place in different cities and the characters are not really connected from book to book. I am currently on book four, but it was easy to move from that one to this one and not feel behind.
This is the story of FBI Special Agent Shane Murphy, who has been through some trying times and had currently been assigned a rookie agent, Kathleen (Katyi) Edwards, to do a seemingly simple stakeout. When she goes into the bar to use the bathroom, she ends up in the middle of the kidnapping of a senator’s teenaged daughter. That is where the story takes off.
As they investigate the case, they begin to appreciate each other and there is an underlying attraction. There are also quite a few secondary characters that enhance each of them and their backstories. Overall, it has a decent story with interesting characters and plotline. My only issue with the story is how it treats Katyi and at times makes her sound incompetent. Since I was reading book four before this one, it seems to be a trend where the female agent is too sweet and trusting. Besides being redundant, I found it hard to believe that someone would make it through the training and process to become an agent without this coming to light.

Mimi Barbour, ‘Special Agent Murphy’,
Undercover FBI Series, book 8.

As a Hidden Gems ARC reader I received a free copy and promised an honest review. Here it is.

Rating: 4,5 stars (of 5).

In general: Romance between FBI Special Agents .

Main characters:
- Shane Murphy.
He’s a tough, successful Special FBI Agent and has a great reputation with his elder colleagues and his female boss, Edna Kale. But covering a mistake of his (killed) partner during a drugs investigation resulted in some (younger co-workers) suspecting him of being bribed and so his good name was damaged.

- Kathleen (intro) or Katherine (ch. 7 and rest of book) ‘Kayti’ Edwards.
She’s the only daughter of a single mom who died some time ago. Her mom’s most important care in live was her daughter’s well-being. So she got much loving attention and a good education. Kayti has a lot of feeling for other people; she wants to help and protect them and becomes a Special FBI Agent.

As a ‘rooky’ she gets Shane as the experienced partner. Together they have to solve a FBI case. Kayti witnessed the kidnapping of a senator’s daughter, but - due to her bad car driving skills - she couldn’t prevent it. Shane covers her mistake for their boss.
Then the author, Mimi Barbour, describes how their relationship develops during an investigation loaded with exciting action scenes and good dialogues. She creates many wonderful, credible characters in an interesting plot with unexpected twists but perhaps - for me - some scenes (especially in the end) a bit too sweet.
All in all the book was a pleasure to read.

Tough love and soft heart

Special Agent Shane Murphy wasn’t pleased to be partnered with a yapper and a rookie at that. But since he’d been brought down after his last partner was killed is a drug bust gone wrong, he’d live with it. That is until he saw her wipe up the floor with several guys twice her size. It seems there was more to Special Agent Katherine Edwards, then her nervous twitter and beautiful body.
The fight in the bar was just the beginning of a case that would draw both of them solidly together to find a Misti Bond, a kidnapped teen. Suspense, mystery, secrets long held and all laced with humor and romance. Murphy is tough, but has a soft spot, where the women he let into his life were concerned. They never worked out because he wanted to take care of them; they wanted control. Katherine was already a very caring person, she knew just how to respond to Shane that was equal parts humor, control wrapped in a velvet glove and boundless love.
If you enjoy, stories like “Castle” and “Bones” you will fall right in and run with these special agents, who are running against a short deadline, doing wherever they can to save Misti and to put a chock hold on a syndicate.
The story is well balanced, easy to read, have you biting your nails, while driving with Katherine, smiling at her quips to Murphy, heartsick for Misti and her family and rooting for a couple of boys trying survive in dysfunctional families.

Special Agent Murphy is the eighth book in the Undercover FBI series, but reads as a stand alone. Murphy has been paired with a rookie who’d driving him crazy - she talks a lot, gets herself into trouble, and he can’t stop thinking about her. Kayti just wants to help, but with the deadline on a kidnapping ticks closer, will they be able to save the teen and protect their hearts?

This book was so good and I have really been loving this series! Murphy and Kayti made such an amazing team, in and out of the field, and I loved that they seemed like an opposites attract couple with some amazing chemistry! Murphy is loyal, hard working, shows a crusty side, but has a huge heart! And I really loved his protective nature when it came to those he loved. Kayti has a huge heart, a softer touch with those in need, but loved how she was like Wonder Woman when it came to kicking butt and wanting to protect others! I loved the case that they were assigned to, full of drama, mystery, and danger! This was a great romantic suspense book and I look forward to more from Ms. Barbour!

From Frankie to Kayti...

And YEAH, A SOPHIA!
Had to throw that in there, after 8 great kick axx agents, I love this series! And while I would normally be so sad after finishing a fun, thrilling, series, there's Sophia to come! Yeah, Ms. Barbour!

Kayti was so so unique, and definitely above IQ! But I loved that it took a 13 yr old to realise, Kayti needed glasses! Her driving was so much of the fun in this book!
But, Murphy is exactly what Kayti needs, she doesn't have the Insanity ( I loved) of Franki from the first novel, omgosh, her flying hijinks, or the extreme toughness of Charli and Rules, but she is definitely needed by the FBI!
And even more so, by her sudden family, especially her surprise one at the end. And Murphy needed Kayti, someone who accepted his protectiveness, and understood his snarky humor!
This what I thought was the end of this series, was the absolute wrap up of so many wonder and different themes, but I get to say it and love it!

NEXT!!!!

Our hero is saddled with a rookie who talks to much and it might just drive him nuts, if he doesn't fall for her first.

This is book eight in the series, but it works just fine as a standalone. No prior reading required to enjoy this one.

This is an excellent example of a romantic suspense story. The story is well written and easy to read and paired with an intense plot that is the primary driver for the story. The characters are also well developed, with realistic backgrounds and unique personalities which bring the story to life. I really enjoyed the characters, both the hero that is willing to take a fall to protect his partner and the heroine that may be sensitive, but who can hold her own in a fight. This was a great combination for me and I really enjoyed this story. I am looking forward to reading more in the series.

Highly recommended.

I received an ARC from Hidden Gems for review purposes.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "SPECIAL AGENT MURPHY" Special Agent Shane Murphy has to work with a rookie Agent Kayti Edwards drives him crazy with her constant chatter & very scary driving she attracted to him which causes her to talk tall talk.
Shane & Kayti are working a kidnapping case the Senators daughter has been taken which pulls at his hearstrings she's only 16yrs he doesn't show anyone that side of him.
No one knows that Kayti's boss is her aunt who sends her to Shane so she will be protected on stake out she manages to get into danger she fights with guts inside I think she's a magnet for danger.
I loved the chemistry between Shane & Kayti develope their are some funny quirky heartwarming scenes you couldn't help but love Kayti's personality.
I definitely recommend to get this very interesting entertaining captivating story so well worth the read it won't disappoint so good I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This book takes me back to all the things I loved the best about the very first books in the series. A leading couple that I can respect as competent agents and romantic leads. A suspenseful mystery fraught with drama and tension that had me desperately flipping pages to see how it would get solved. And humor that left me giggle-snorting in some of the most inopportune places. I loved that Kayti is both strong and feminine. It was quite refreshing to see that most of the characters we get the chance to know well in this book are able to show their strengths and their vulnerabilities. As Special Agent Murphy is an homage to her husband, I can’t help but think the author is a lucky lady to have known someone so special.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.

When you fall for your coworker and FBI partner:
Mimi Barbour has done it again with another hit romantic suspense novel. As usual, it is fast paced action but it flowed well and I was able to keep up with all of the developments. There were plenty of plot twists and turns that kept me interested and engaged.
Murphy is caring and intensely protective of those he loves and he soon adds Kayti to his list. There relationship felt authentic and I soon came to care for both of them. Some of Kayti's foibles were hilarious! I also loved the added element of the two teenage boys in their lives as it added a softer, more personable side to the story.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

An "edge of your seat" read
Like the other books in this series you won't want to put it down until you've finished it. The story takes place at Christmas time in Washington, D.C. with the kidnapping of Misti whose father is an influential senator. Agent Shane Murphy and Agent Katherine “Kayti” are assigned to the case (he had been demoted after he took the fall for his deceased partner thereby protecting the fond and proud memories his family held). However, Misti evades their protection and heads to bar with friends only to end up being kidnapped to force her father to do their bosses bidding. Great premise, characters, and writing will draw you into the story (as with all the preceding ones).
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

The writing style is a bit sparse on emotion for my tastes but it fits the style of this book (and yes, there are quite a few grammar gaffs). Both characters were believably developed. Kathleen acts sweet but she can kick butt when necessary, but her new partner makes her nervous (more than the bad guys apparently). Shane’s trying to come back from a career hit that has knocked him off his game, not to mention the temptation of alcohol. Kathleen accepts him for who he is and he’s flabbergasted to find himself falling for ‘the yapper.’ I liked the addition of Shane’s neighbor kid/teen and that of the abused kid (Mark) who drops into their lives and plays a pivotal role. Shane’s internal dialogue was probably the best thing about the story (loved it).

He's a hardened FBI Agent of 10 years standing, willing to be demoted, rather than see his former partner's family know the truth of their sellout relation.
She was a rookie agent, very nervous on her first stake out, especially with this hunk of a man that made her insides flutter. That was until she saw the danger the young girl from the hotel's bathroom was in. Then she unleashed her dynamo power, and tried to save her. Unfortunately, ending up in the driver's seat just ruined the whole situation. Her partner did the last thing imaginable, covered for her.
The drama is full on, as is the romance between the two main characters.
Excellent story!

This was a good book with a compelling story and interesting characters. But the juvenile behavior of the two main characters was difficult to tolerate at the beginning. How could I believe they were both FBI agents? Whenever the story would have me extremely interested and intrigued, the two would get after each other in what seemed to me to be very juvenile ways.

Eventually I became used to their behavior and tended to ignore it. That made the true story easier to concentrate on. Most of the time the drama seemed very real. Situations were believable. People's reaction to police, or in this case the FBI, seemed typical. The story was very contemporary.

Toward the end of the book, the main characters, Murphy and Kayti, became more comfortable as they acknowledged their love for each other. What a nice change of pace, and it made the reactions to each other much easier to accept. It ends on Christmas Day and has a "happily ever after" ending.

I have devoured this book, once I started I just had to finish it. It has humour, real emotions and is full of the good and the bad; suspense, romance, crime, grief, sorrow, loss, friendships, family, harsh realities, secrets, lies, truth, honesty, trust, love, hope, dreams, judgements and acceptance. It is well written, flows along so well it swept me up into the story and it's twists and turns. I can honestly say I was sad when I got to the end. I have read a few of this series and this is my favourite, hands down. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an ARC.

This was fun, but I really didn't like Shane he was to much of a male chauvinist for my taste and yet he was one mean cook go figure. I appreciated his owning up to his attitude. I liked that he wanted to protect Katyi, I didn't like that he wouldn't let her in on what was going on, NOT COOL. Katyi was a little too mushy for my taste, she was strong in some ways and boy can she fight. The secondary characters made the store for me, Mark, Talin and Edna they all made me laugh. They all were there for Katyi and Shane. Towards the end I got a little teary eyed. Overall I found the story fun and entertaining. I read on Kindle Unlimited.

All round not put downable read

It has been a while since I have read a book that grabbed my attention so completely. That is from someone who has four different stories going at the same time in different rooms. This one took presidents over all the others being carried from room to room with my eyes rarely leaving the reader. Good, well written story. Wonderful, multi dimensional characters. A nice flow of action and romance. An all round not put downable read. Very refreshing for me.

Mimi Barbour writes with her whole heart. Murphy pretends to be a tough nut but underneath he has a soft heart. He gets paired with a rookie, Kathleen who immediately starts to drive him crazy. She is a magnet for trouble and a terrible driver with a soft heart. This is a story with hidden layers. As these two go crashing through the investigation to save a kidnapped young girl, they find plenty of trouble on the way. You will be amused by their antics, and heartened by the family they form.

Awesome romantic suspense with lots of action and intrigue. Agent Shane Murphy has been given a new partner Kati Edwards and his life will never be the same. Ms. Barbour wrote well developed and easy to relate to characters. As with her other Special Agent stories the story itself draws the reader in so that you can't wait to finish the book. I received a complementary copy of this great book via Hidden Gems and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by Ms. Barbour.

The first couple of chapters I didn’t like, the cussing and subject. Picked book up later and forward a number of chapters and then there was a good story. She seemed quite immature to even be a rookie cop, had good skills, out side of driving which she said she would correct, The love interest was too quick. Scenario of the kidnapping and getting Mark and Misty back was good. Have read the series as well as her other books and they are good.

Kayti is a smart, quirky, kick-butt agent and Shane is a strong no-nonsense agent who is annoyed by her constant chatter and inability to drive, but soon learns she can hold her own. They stumble upon a kidnapping and learn to work together while both of them are dealing with other outside distractions. This romantic suspense novel has plenty of action, heart, and great characters. I am loving the Undercover FBI Series.

Love softens the hardest

Firstly and most importantly I love the character Kayti. She is strong, tough and capable and willing to take on the bad guys. Then there’s Murphy. His heart is a lot bigger than he’d have others know. In the search for a kidnapped girl they come together and there are fireworks! This is a beautifully written story with layers. No way could I put it down until the end. It was perfect from start to finish!

Great addition to the Undercover FBI series

This is a great read with a lovable lead character and hero. Murphy is a good FBI agent who knows how to solve a case and also knows how to be a gentleman and sweetheart all at the same time. This is a well-written, enjoyable story that any fan of Mimi Barbour’s or the Undercover FBI series will enjoy.

Great story! Murphy gets a new partner with Edwards and she manages to capture his attention. While on a stakeout, things go in an unexpected route and things go from there. Edwards seems to be a magnet for trouble which causes Murphy to just about stroke out! I like these two together and the story line is great!

Finding more than the one forever

While Murphy is this big mean and questionable past to some of his former agents his boss knew the truth. When Edna knew her "neice" was at her department there was only one person she trusted to keep her safe. In the end there was to the story for everyone.
