Gryff and his friends have spent the last two years battling constant rifts and hunting down ancient ciphers, but now that they’re starting to get some answers, only more questions arise.
Gryff will have to be on the top of his game to stay ahead of betrayals, political coups, and goddess monsters from the shadowscape attempting to seduce him.
This series started taking a turn for the worse after book 4 and it continues to decline in my opinion. At this point it feels like the author is just trying to milk as much money as he can. Take this book for instance, how could the story seem so incredibly long and at the same time have almost nothing happen. Only about 20% of this book was interesting and the rest was just filler. I am probably over exaggerating a bit, but the author did trigger some of my pet peeves. One of those being the author completely ignoring his own world building/set up. Gryff is supposed to be a student. He is supposed to go to school for 5 years and then do his military service. He just finished his first year in school but for the last 4 books he hasn't taken a single class! He now is the leader of his team? Where the hell is the rest of the military? This story started out so perfectly too in book 1; such a simple premise. There are monster portals that open up in the world and it is the job of the enclave to protect the citizens and close those portals. Gryff went to school to learn how to do just that. See that is such a simple idea. Everything I liked about the story has pretty much went away since book 4 and that means all that is left is the crap that I don't like.
Gryff and his team end up getting all of the ciphers and are meeting up with the rest of his team.
I am getting real close to not caring about this series anymore. The parts I care about are coming less and less and the parts I hate seem to be getting longer and longer. Not sure yet if I will pick up the next book.
The author continues to grow the complexity of the characters and the plot. The MC has continued to grow into the leadership role and develop his power while still being able too bring his friends with him. The pacing was good and I enjoyed the fight scenes very much. Overall it was another homerun from the author.
This series has been a hit and miss with me. While I like the standard shounen style plot progression, I’m just not sold on the characters yet, atleast not as much as I hoped it would have by now. Nia is the only char who has stood out to me so far but she has remained out of action for a while now. On the other hand, chars like Layla and Braden who are often the most cliche sidekick archetypes in such series are getting a bit too much focus for my liking.
Having said that, Sera is an amazing char. I’m loving everything she’s bringing to the table and it’s introducing something exciting to look forward to. Also, it’s finally time for the monster characters to take centre-stage. It’s pretty much the main reason I got into this series. About time the summons get some personality.
The journey kicks off with a palpable sense of betrayal. When a trusted friend absconds with precious artefacts, the protagonist, fueled by a sense of duty and anger, embarks on a pursuit. The path takes them across diverse towns, each laden with its own distinct aura and set of challenges.
As the pursuit intensifies, the protagonist confronts various monsters emanating from mysterious rifts. The narrative takes a deeper turn when they encounter an ancient monster, which then takes residence within the protagonist, adding a layer of complexity to their mission. The story captivates as the protagonist grapples with this internal presence while continuing the external chase.
The climax reveals a poignant twist. The friend, once thought to have betrayed them, is found to have been manipulated by a monstrous entity. A riveting battle ensues, where our hero strives to prevent the opening of a permanent rift from the shadow world. The resolution brings a mix of relief and introspection, encapsulating a tale of adventure, self-discovery, and the enduring bonds of friendship
Progressed the story and built on the lore slowly being fed through the series. Not the best book in the series, as some of the plot was a little clunky, but some interesting battles and the addition of the rulers of the monsters in the Shadowscape was good.
Okay, if you haven't started this series yet you really need to. Gruff and his team continue to grow in power as they chase the Culvers and work on translation. Gruff has another challenge with a new creature called an Archanon as the chase a possessed Gwainn though the world and shadowscape. The mysterious Dark woman mage makes another apperance with cryptic comments and warning. This is an excellent series that will keep you engrossed!
When the story is going, it's great. When it's interrupted by a half-chapter sex scene, it's not so great. The sex exists in some liminal space where plot and time don't matter and neither do physics. Honestly, it would be fine if it didn't grind the story to a halt for most of a chapter.
Other than that, it would be easily 5⭐. The story is actually going really well, and the characters are in really interesting spots.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Gryff and the others find trouble when one of them becomes possessed by Phi. It becomes a race against time to save the from ultimate doom. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
Loving the new additions of characters and the advancement of the plot. Really great story and I'm guessing on where it's going. This series has vastly become my favorite and each book just keeps getting better.
The developing story is pushed forward at a nice pace and the secrets revealed are enough to keep the series fresh and interesting. The growth of the characters relationships really makes this series worth reading. Bring on Book 8.
Gryff and his team got Gwaine back got the rest of the ciphers back I don't know what Phi will cause next. Gryff relationship with the Sera will be interesting
I’m a big fan of this series, and this book was pretty interesting considering more and more information about the lore of the story was being unfolded and with new monsters the MC is capturing. And some of the conversations between characters is just hilarious that I visibly smile and laugh! Highly recommend reading this series!
Enjoyable read, love the creatures and characters in this series and how they have grown and changed. Combat is always a pleasant blend of adrenaline fuelled danger and battle strategy with the MCs monsters.
Only downside is the constant fragments and tidbits fed to the user about the world's history and ongoing fued between monsters and humans. While it's an understandable technique to keep readers intrigued, and I enjoyed the puzzle to begin with, it has the feel of being deliberately dragged out with no answers.
Overall I enjoy this series and will keep reading, but am looking for a solid chunk of lore to tide me over in the coming books.
Another mission sends the team into the desert to find their lost friend, and rescue him from the creature possessing him. What will they do? A good read.
My favorite series from Eric Vall, totally did not see the major plot twist that both answers so many questions from the last several books and foreshadows several focused steps in the storyline. Btw Master Vall, can you add more harem characters? It seems like the MC has more than enough time on his hands to save the world and make sure his women are happy... Surely a few more characters won’t be too much to ask! (Total sarcasm - having an entertaining time keeping all the relationship statuses current) I shall continue to enjoy being impressed as you manage the interpersonal relationships that are constantly getting more complex.
Very enjoyable addition to the Summoner series, all of Gryffs girls seem to know about each other now and all seem fine with the situation (talk about a male fantasy). The monster fights keeps the action going along with new revelations about the world and more of its major characters. The story hints at their being something special about Gryff, but we always knew that. Can’t wait for more, but in the mean time, I will read Without Law 3, and Succubus Lord 8 another of Eric’s series. Wow can this guy write good books really fast.
This series continues to be a favorite of mine. If course the harem is fun but I enjoy the overarching plot. Monster vs humanity but in a controlled and logical methodology... Which is eroding. Hence the series about the struggle to stop it. More powers are coming to light as the series progresses as expected and hopefully Gryff gains new abilities to combat the new powers, and hey maybe he will finish schooling someday.. Haha yeah right!!
Less of the NSFW and more of action scenes is just what the doctor ordered for this series. A whole lot of unnecessary clutter needs to be removed from the story ASAP as they add zero value to the story. Looking forward to reading the next installment.
In this book we get a hint at even higher forces at play and what Gryff’s role is in the power struggle. After 7 books I couldn’t decide whether I liked how disgustingly charming the MC is to every person (except Madame Sharpe) but it helps the plot move. I’m interested for the next one for what happens with Sera.
These books keep getting better as the story progresses. With a rift opening in an enclave and the council branding Gryff and his friends traitors things couldn't get worse. You need to read and find out if the council wins and has Gryff et al locked up or do they save the day. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.
This is probably my favorite series done by the author. The story is moving at a good pace and the characters are dynamic. All in all can’t wait for the next one
Gryf's story is becoming a true entanglement. Who knows what plot twist we will find next. Is it his past, his present with all of his alluring ladies, or his future with his relationship with his ,amid and monsters.
This is a good book. You should read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The MC and his friends are fun. I like the camaraderie. You get that they are real friends.
Like all the other books in the series. I had a severe lack of sleep for trying to complete the book. Eric Vall give me a break and complete the series... I need to fully concentrate on work and not wait for your books.!!
