This book is a brief introduction to the Enneagram.

It includes a test to help you find your type, overviews of each of the 9 types, and breakdowns of how each type relates to every other type in work, home, and relationship contexts. That's pretty much the whole book.

I would say the majority of the book is taken up in sections explaining how type two and type five get along at work, how type two and type six get along at work, how type two and type seven-- all the way through the many permutations. This is mildly helpful, but only if you know your friends', coworkers', and relatives' Enneagram numbers. The overall introduction of the system at the beginning is more a definition of terms than anything else.

This book saves you the work of clicking through seventeen web pages to find what you're looking for, but in reality it gives you the same exact information you could find online. If you're looking for anything more in-depth than a quiz and a brief profile, I would avoid paying money for this book and instead look elsewhere.

I have read a couple of other books on this subject and taken a course through my work that utilized a very similar system to guide recognition of personality types. This book does a good job with this and gives good summaries and explanations of the types as well as those features of someone’s personality that either strengthen or detract from their responses to events. One aspect of this type of program that I greatly appreciate is the breakdown of what drives a person’s response to events based on their type but then how that changes depending on the circumstances. For instance, I find it fascinating to try to understand how we all respond (within our types) when at ease versus under stress. I also appreciate the discussion of the ways to interact with others in ways that are mutually beneficial and productive.
Fascinating subject and well done book.
Thank you for the early release copy.

So I was loving this book, but only until chapter 3. I absolutely loved how it breaks down and helps you do the physical test to find your number. So easy to understand and get to your answer. But then it goes into how to never guess another persons number. Or do the test for them. And yet the second half of the book is all how your specific number works with others in regards to work, love life, etc. so for someone like me, and maybe I am an outlier, whose husband doesn’t care about this and won’t take a test, the second half of the book was truly a waste of time. Maybe think of changing the title of the book? Very misleading. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Personality types and relationships!

There's been a plethora of personality type methods over the years. The enneagram is one of the latest such personality organizing types. The end game of course is to use that information in order to facilitate better understanding at the personal, family and beyond for relationships.
A fascinating read that gives those who want to investigate personal and interpersonal relational development, to understand other ways to communicate with those around them.

I liked that a lot of this book was focused on how to improve your relationships, however, I would have loved a bit more advice on how to deal with your own weaknesses & areas of growth. The information on Triads was extremely helpful in determining my own type. I actually scored the same on 3 types on the initial quiz, so I used the triads to determine which of the 3 felt the most accurate for me. (I’m a 4w5!)

When I see those quizzes on Facebook--Which Harry Potter Character are You?--I go right past. I've taken the Myers-Briggs test a half-dozen times with varying results. I'm not attracted to having someone else tell me about my personality, based on a quiz, either a quick quiz or 144 questions.

But I read an article about the Enneagram 20 years ago, and was able, without any clever surveys, to quickly and confidently identify my type. By the time I finished the article, I had figured out my husband, my siblings and my children. Plus my boss (he was a Boss, type 8--surprise, huh?). For some reason, this kind of typing, and ways to use it, appealed to me. I bought a book--a thick book with a lot of skippable chapters filled with psychological terms and theories.

When I saw this was available at the library, I decided to review. Everyone I know is still the same number. The book skips the extensive quizzing and assumes you'll find yourself without a lot of trouble--there's a lot about different types as friends, lovers and work colleagues. Most of the information falls under the umbrella of common sense in dealing with people who are, say, anxious or irresponsible or demanding. Still, it was a quick and interesting read.

The Enneagram is a personnality test made up of nine different personalitiy types with a list of traits and behaviours.
It helps you to know more about your personality, what is motivating you and how to deal with your other relationships at home, at work or whith friends.
In this book you will be able to do the Ennegram test or you can do it online she recommanded:https://www.eclecticenergies.com/enne...
I did mine online.
You will learn more about your type, your strenghts, your weaknesses and how to deal with other types at home or at work.
It interesting if you want to know more about yourself and understand your behaviour. Learning about yourself helps you to accept you as you are and navigate into life with more wisdom.

Useful as a Reference

I like that this provided the ways two types would get into conflict in different situations. I found the work relationship section very helpful. Though the author likely did not intend for this book to be used this way I found it helpful for confirming types of others that you aren't 100% sure about. For example if you know your type, you can check to see if the person your unsure of reacts more like type A or type B.

A good introduction to the Enneagram, with a multi-part quiz to help determine your number and some good explanations of how that plays out in various aspects of your life (work, family, times of stress, etc.). A significant portion of the book is dedicated to how the various Enneagram types relate to each other, which was interesting but ultimately not very helpful unless you happen to know the types of the people you interact with (and Gomez says explicitly that you can't determine other people's types via the quiz).

The Enneagram You is a brief introduction to an ancient algorithm for personality typing, and while there are several other similar systems (Myers-Briggs for example), this one seems the most flexible. There are 9 personality types, however they are all connected by a web and you're placed in this sort of sliding scale between your Core Type and your sub-types (called Wings) depending on your unique personality and how you react to positive and negative situations. It's fascinating to say the least.

In regards to the Enneagram system, I believe there's an inkling of truth to it. I placed consistently between a few different tests available online, and my Type aligned with my Myers-Briggs Type as well. However, I noticed a few issues. I'm a person who is very introspective and honest about my flaws, and I could not relate to nor agree with some of my Type explanations which came off as overly negative. So, while it's fairly accurate, it can't detect what drives your behaviors and in assuming to do so it has some inaccuracies.

Additionally, I placed almost evenly scored between three different Types (and my Wing is a completely different Type than those), so I have some confusion on how someone can adequately type themselves if you are an accumulation of several types. On an individual level, I suppose it makes sense because you can look through all of them to build your personal profile, as it were. In relation to how your type interacts with other types, it then gets muddled since you can only pair up Core Type to Core Type (I paired up my husband and myself, and while some aspects hit the mark, there were still many inaccuracies). Perhaps this is where a professional would be beneficial. Regardless, I can't see this system being useful unless you have everyone around you type themselves with complete honesty, because it's pretty impossible to type others.

In regards to the book, I would say it's nothing special. There's a brief explanation overviewing the Enneagram system, a few quizzes, profiles for each Type, and then how each Type interacts with the other Types in familial relationships, romantic relationships, and professional relationships. At the end of the book there's no conclusion or anything, it just cuts to the Index. The file I was provided was horridly formatted so it was impossible to take the quizzes in the book, which is why I did so externally, also making the rest of the book a bit difficult to read through. I found that the information provided is extremely limited in comparison to what you can easily find online.

This book would be useful for casual perusing, for those who would like to keep a copy on hand, or for lying about as a conversation starter.

I've always had an interest in understanding personality, and have been meaning to explore the Enneagram for a number of years, yet just never got around to it. This past week I decided to listen to this book on a whim, and it definitely wasn't the right place to start.

This book gives a good introduction to what the Enneagram is, as well as, an overview of the nine enneatypes, before going in-depth into the interactions between the various types. As a newbie, I found the first third interesting. However, the majority was beyond my understanding, which wasn't necessarily helpful given that I don't know the type of those people in my life (something the author actually discourages against trying to figure out).

I could see how this would be beneficial to human resource departments if they know all of the types of their employees, but for me I found myself skipping large sections. The Enneagram & You is definitely better suited for those people with a greater knowledge of their own type as well as the types of their partners, family, friends and co-workers.

The Enneagram Test is well beloved in my office- one of my peers enthusiastically sends it out to every person who hasn't taken it yet. It helps us understand one another better, to grasp the reasons for people's sometimes mysterious actions, and to figure out how to best recognize others for their contributions. It's like a work-friendly Love Languages test-- and my coworker will enthusiastically recommend it as the perfect model. This book is more towards those who are new to The Enneagram Method, offering an introduction and then a dive into the functions of the test. It even offers an Enneagram test you can use for yourself at the beginning-- though I recommend taking a more advanced test online, or better yet, take the test from a professional proctor. That way, you're less likely to answer with bias, and find your true number. I didn't find anything new in this book-- but don't let that scare you away from the book, if you're a newbie. To those well versed in the method, it's not going to be anything new or interesting-- but for those who are new to it, and want to dip their toes in, it's a good asset.

I can see how this book would be helpful to some people in certain circumstances, but I just found it rigid and stale. It was written in a very black-and-white manner with a lot of "(number)s are..." and "they will...". It doesn't take into account how being raised in different cultures and religions impact personality and values, nor does it take into account how disability can affect people's outlook on life and what they value. I ended up skimming this book after the first couple of chapters, as I was not getting much out of it.

I am an enneagram fan (9w1 for you enneagram nerds), and this is the fourth or fifth book I've read on the topic. Gomez gives a brief, but helpful overview of the system, and a quiz and type descriptions to help pinpoint which number you most relate to. The heart of the book, though, are detailed sections pairing up each type and looking at how they relate to each other in the home, in a romantic relationship, and at work. By discussing how the types live/love/work in harmony, where their challenges come up, and how they can work together to resolve conflict, Gomez brings studying the enneagram beyond just understanding your own personality and motivations and shines a light on how all us wild different personality types are bumping into, supporting, reacting, and relating to each other.

Gomez, like many other authors, warns against trying to guess what other people's types might be, although unless you can get your family, romantic partner, and co-workers to jump into the enneagram world (which is a tough sell), you kind of have to at least take a stab at typing them (in my view, my husband is ABSOLUTELY a 4, btw) if you want to really dig into her text. If only one side of these relationships is looking at this tool, it also makes it hard to put her advice for resolving conflict into action, although even with that, her ability to frame how the different types react and interact is helpful in giving a foundation to understanding these relationships.

Gomez has a clear and straightforward writing style that (for the most part) avoids the trap of saying the same thing over and over again, which is a pitfall in any book that treads through the same topic for all these types and pairs. She doesn't simplify things so much that they lose their power, and avoids easily instagramed or cutesy phrasing and advice. She also avoids strongly gendering any of her advice or descriptions, which is a plus in a world of enneagram books that are often very feminized.

For me, The Wisdom of the Enneagram by Don Richard Riso is still a good starting place if you are trying to learn more about the system and your type, but this is a great addition for someone who wants to dig into the enneagram more deeply and understand how it plays out in our everyday interactions.

I was interested in this book since I am currently taking a class on the Enneagram and the creative process and I wanted to see how this book compared to what we were discussing in class. My class is taught by a certified instructor and I found everything in this book aligned with the information she presented in class. I even took the tests at the beginning of the book and my results matched with my Enneagram number. Everything is presented in an easy to understand, easy to follow format; so this book is perfect for those new to the Enneagram.

My one note would be that there are sections in the book for people to better understand how the number interacts with other numbers in a family, romance, and work environment. These sections are helpful, but only if the reader knows the other person's number. Most of the people in my circle have never heard of the Enneagram, or if they have, they have not gone through the process to find out their number. In my case, the first portion of this book was quite helpful, but the following sections didn't provide any additional insight. With that said, I would still recommend this book, especially for the test in the front. For those that do not have time to take a 9 week, 2-hour long class on the Enneagram, these tests are perfect for getting someone on the path to better understanding themselves.

This book covers everything you need to know about the The Enneagram which is an ancient personality system comprised of 9 different personality types. It shows you why you have the personality traits you do, what’s motivating your behaviours, how to approach conflict, and how best to interact with others. There is a quiz included that will help you determine which of the 9 personality types you fall under. I really liked that this was included because it's difficult to find free reputable Enneagram quizzes online. What's great about this, is that you can have your family and friends do the quiz as well. You can then see by reading the many chapters in this book how your personality type interacts with your family and friend's personality types as well, showing areas of strength and areas of improvement that will ultimately help you make the most out of your relationships.

The Enneagram can help you develop more self-awareness that will nurture more self-love, mindfulness, and compassion. When you’re able to better understand yourself, you can make better choices that will empower you, instead of you questioning and critiquing yourself to death because you think there is something wrong with who you are.

Overall I thought this was a good concise book on The Enneagram that I would recommend to anyone who is curious about this system.

3.5 stars.

LOVED: the inclusion of various triads in the discussion - stances/Hornevian triads, Harmonic triads, Object Relations triads and the centers of intelligence. This is something I want to read more about, and I loved getting a glimpse of those pieces in this resource.

The rest is a pretty basic introductory look at the Enneagram. There's a quiz, which I know newcomers love to see, although the research says that quizzes are NOT a great way to find your number and can set you on the wrong path for awhile with the Enneagram. There's a look at each type - about 5 pages of content for each. And then the author pairs the numbers in the areas of relationships at home, romantic relationships, and work relationships. (By "pair" I mean Type One with Type One, Type One with Type Two and so on) These are interesting discussions, but fairly broad instead of deep.

When someone talks to me about the Enneagram, I always suggest they start with The Road Back to You and some podcasts from top teachers. That recommendation is not changing any time soon. But I could see newcomers starting here, too, although the triads piece to me seems a deeper level of instruction when compared to the rest of the book.

"The Enneagram and You" by Gina Gomez is a good user-friendly, easy-to-understand book that introduces the reader to the Enneagram as well as the descriptions of all the types and also the triads and centers. In addition, it includes a section on how understanding your enneagram type can help you in life decisions, self awareness, relationships, and well-being. I also appreciated the way the enneagram descriptions were grouped to include a description of their type, strengths and challenges, and a description of that personality at work and relationships. It also includes strengths and challenges for couples of different types. I really liked the way this book was organized. Many enneagram books include so much information, one can get lost trying to find the relevant information they are looking for. This book is designed for the reader to understand the enneagram without too much fluff, and then provides a "manual" for navigating relationships with the different types. This it the kind of book that I will refer back to because it contains all the "meat" I want without all the "fluff" and is focused on how to use the enneagram to benefit us.

This is a new fresh take of the Enneagram that I never read before. So, it was certainly an interesting read to help me better understand the different personalities of people.

Half of this book she actually goes into another layer of triads that I have not read before. Hornevian, Harmonic and Object Relations Triad. Not only does she goes into each Enneagram number, she also goes into each numbers blind sport, how they are at home and love. Also how the number is at work and how to communicate and resolve conflict at work.

The other half of the book is pairing the Enneagram numbers and how they interact with each in their love life, home life and at work. I enjoyed the different ways the numbers interact with each other in positive and negative ways. It shows the challenges and how to work together with each personalities.

Even though it is not a break through read when it comes to Enneagrams, this was a fresh take on it and gave me fresh reminder of the people I interact with on a daily basis.

*I received this book from NetGalley in return for a honest review*

I love books about the Enneagram and this is a great one, especially if you are just getting started. It starts with a well thought out quiz that was pretty accurate in my eyes. It then goes into more detail for each type and I felt it was the perfect amount of information.

Lastly there were combinations of each types for home, romantic relationships, and work which is where I did learn some new information. I found that it was like there were cameras in my house for the combinations of 7's and 9's (my husband and I) and there were definitely some things to consider there.

This isn't really a book that you would normally read all the way through since you will mostly be focusing on your number and the numbers of your close friends and family, but I find it a great introduction to learning about your enneagram number and how to relate with those around you.

If you are interested in the enneagram, this is a nice overview and guide. There is a comprehensive quiz at the beginning to help you identify your type, and then thorough explanations of each type followed by short guides on how to successfully interact with others at home, romantically, and at work for all types.

This helped me affirm that I am a 3, which I already thought I was going into the book. What I liked the best about reading this book was trying to identify the type of my husband and close family members and then reading about how to successfully interact with their types. This is a book I would want to keep and refer to every once in a while when looking to improve my interactions or relationship with somebody.

What it does not have, and what I have seen or heard in other enneagram materials, is a deeper dive into the weaknesses of each type and how we can address them over time. I will keep searching for other resources in this area.

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Discovering my Enneagram type last year was one of the most eye-opening and freeing experiences I’ve ever had. I’ve learned more about myself over the past year than I ever have before. I’ve read several books on the Enneagram, so I was curious to see what new information would be in The Enneagram and You. While I didn’t find anything new, this book is an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to learn what their Enneagram type is and how it relates to all aspects of their lives. Because I was reading this on a Kindle, many of the diagrams and quizzes were difficult to see clearly, but I’m sure the finished book will be beautiful and clear. I would recommend this book to anyone starting out on their journey to learn more about themselves through the Enneagram.

While I would have liked a bit MORE of what this book had to offer (such as sections about friendships, familial relationships when you don’t live in the same home such as siblings relationships and parent/adult child relationships) I really enjoyed how well the book was laid out, everything was explained well and clearly. I especially love the sections that talk about different enneagram pairings and their relationships, it rang true in nearly every way and provided realistic and helpful advice on how to manage the difficult parts, while also reminding a person of all the things they love about their relationship and partner.
Bonus- easy to read through for someone with ADHD who often struggles to focus on nonfiction.

3🔥 I was expecting more actionable details to help you change. This is not that.

It's basically just a run down of the types and how they act in different areas of life. More helpful to learn about other people than to grow in you own life.

So I'm giving a 3 because it wasn't what I was looking for but it might be what you want to help with your relationships with others. Though getting all your coworkers to take the tests is unlikely. (because unlike mbti or astrology each test has given me different results)

There are tests included which is not overly common for enneagram books so that was nice, though you have to tally it all longhand. A link to a online test would be preferable.

After being introduced to the enneagram personality quiz I was quickly hooked on learning more about each trait of a person. Since then I’ve introduced the survey to my family and friends.

This book provided me with an on ramp of basic overview in it’s simplest of forms. There are other books that you can read that go into greater detail on a persons type, character, and reasons they may responses the way one does.

The enneagram can seem like a bottom pot of self evaluation and study. You can put in as much study time as you prefer or do a simple read like the one offered here by Gina Gomez.

Enjoy 😊
