Havenfall Harbor

Home for wayward and orphaned supernaturals.

Bridging the gap between supernaturals and humans is my only goal, or so I thought. Keeping myself alive and out of trouble is proving harder than expected.

Getting a job as the first human liaison at Havenfall was a dream come true, until I realize it’s not just humans that don’t want the species mixing.

Someone doesn’t want me a here, and they aren’t making it a secret that they will do just about anything to make sure I don’t stick around.

Seems like I have a few things to teach them about underestimating my determination.

Welcome to Havenfall where not just the students bite.

Albany Walker is quickly becoming a favourite author! I gobbled this book up. It’s a slow burn paranormal romance. Quinn Shaw takes a job at a school for the supernatural as the human liaison. It quickly becomes obvious that not all the supernaturals are happy she’s there, and there’s a bit of a suspense subplot to the storyline, as someone makes their displeasure very known. At the school, Quinn meets a handsome shifter and a broody vampire, her two love interests, and while I’m not usually a fan of why choose romances (I say that, but all the ones I’ve read I’ve enjoyed), I really love the way these three are with each other. This is a very slow burn romance, which is my absolute favourite. I can’t wait to dive into the second book!

Look, I had a good time. But... I am really tired of "grumpy" heroes who are just rude or don't have social skills. Griffin is emotionally stunted and I can't get behind him. Evan is pretty good.

I like the world and the mystery... and I have enough vested interest in the romance, I'm willing to at least try book 2.

i was annoyed that mc is so weak and not special.

for someone whose life goal was to do what she did , she knew nothing at all about supernatural. “I’ve studied vampire physiology for years. ” yeah but she didn’t know anything about their strong senses

300 pages of her being oblivious was super annoying.

i don’t want to read next book.

Quinn is a human with a passion to help young supernaturals acclimate to the human world easier. After accepting her dream position at a school for adolescent supes, where Quinn is the only human, she quickly makes friends and even some unknown enemies. Quinn quickly has issues that single her out and so she finds herself spending a lot more time than usual with two male best friends. While Quinn is smitten, she really does take her job seriously and for much of the book is quite oblivious to their obvious attention. I don't know why, but given the darker cover and the fact that Quinn is at a school for supernaturals I was expecting something more on the spooky side and this book is not that at all. I actually think the school being full of supernaturals was actually rather dull and drama free. The most issues seem to arise with OW jealousy and Quinn finding her way to fitting in and doing her job. There is a threat throughout the book but I'm pretty sure I have that figured out and again, it's feels a much more minor story-line compared to the evolving relationship. It's been a fun MFM read so far but I'm ready for things to go from PG-13 to R stat please!

I am such a fan of Albany Walker. This is my second book by her, and I couldn't be happier that I've found her. She's brilliant and utterly creative. I didn't want to put down this book. This paranormal romance took me on a journey of love with a ton of sexual tension mixed with a touch of mystery.

Quinn is the first human liaison at Havenfall Harbor school. There has been so much hostility between the two groups since the supernatuals decided to come out. Quinn wants to help in any way possible to help bridge the gap between the supernaturals and humans. She wasn't looking for anything romantic, but fate has other plans.

Quinn is at times completely oblivious to the sexual tension happening between Griff and Evan. She doesn't always see or understand the signs of their romantic interest like another supernatural would have. Griff and Evan took their time for her to get to know them. I like that the book wasn't focused on the romance 100% of the time. It took majority of the book for Griff and Evan to even tell Quinn how they felt, and what their hopeful plans were about being together.

This book switched between Quinn, Griff, and Evan. The plot was slow pace, but had a ton of details. It does end on a cliff hanger. There's so many different ways the story can go, and I'm excited to see were Albany walker will take it. If you love paranormal romances this is the book for you!

I received an ARC for an honest review!

I liked the story but at one point Quinn started getting on my nerves. She was supposed to be so woke to supernaturals but obvious clues eluded her. I think anyone else could have guessed what was going on with Griffin and Evan but she at times willfully misunderstands. Seriously. However, I'm still interested in the story and I'm willing to stick it out.
Recently read this again and I still agree with my initial impression.

There is a good chance that I am CRAZY. I do acknowledge that possibility. Reading this book has given me another example to provide to my psychologist if I ever actually go to one. On one shoulder I have a sweet mini version of my myself sayig, "This book was good. Give it 3 stars". On the other shoulder is a sassier version of me with her eyebrow raised saying, "Drop a 1-star on this crap!"

Well, the issue is that once again there is a love Triangle. Once again, there is a vampire and were-animal love interest. Once again, the male characters fall so deeply in love with this human character for no reason at all. There is nothing special about Quinn. These men are decades older, so why does Quinn catch their attention after all this time? She is just a regular person. Makes no sense.

Quinn also gets a job that she has no idea how to do. You apply for a Supernatural academy but you have NO real knowledge of supernaturals. NO experience being a guidance counselor to regular humans so how are you qualified for this position? The issue with this flaw is that throughout the book she is faced with things that are pretty obvious.

And the big blow for this one is the mystery plot. Wow. Just wow. This should have been a sub-plot that added depth to the story. Something more important should have been happening while this was just another thing making it difficult. Instead we get this Raman Noodle plot that is only acceptable when you have NOTHING else or as a side item when you've burned the macaroni.

So sassy me wins. I liked the idea of a book like this ( Grown-up book about a supernatural school with REAL ADULT characters) but the author just seemed not to want it as much as me and my mini
Selves. Now maybe the author will make it up in the next book. I'm feeling an Epic love scene in the making and I'm all for it. Hopefully she wont be afraid to give us what we are obviously expecting now.

A positive for this book was the narration. This was an excellent format for two narrators. Each narrator had a set of characters assigned to them. This means the sound of the characters' voice didnt change when the POV changed.

2 Stars. Very unmotivated plot but love story has potential if it goes in the grown up direction instead of a Twilight remake. Fingers crossed.

School daze

The book needs greater plot development, character depth, and general description. There simply isn’t much to the book. “Ms. Shaw” takes a job at a school for wayward supernatural children. She is hired by the mysterious headmaster “G. Stone” who she doesn’t meet until the last 1/4 of the book, but she coincidentally does meet a man named Griffin nolastname on her first day. Oh, gosh. What will the identity of the unseen headmaster be?

In terms of the mystery, there is no resolution in this book and the thinness of the mystery begs the question of why the author wanted to write two books on the subject. Quinn gets harassed at work and immediately starts dating the headmaster and head of security. Unfortunately, the author’s idea of harassment swings between someone giving her a dirty look and leaving a dead animal for Quinn in her apartment. Or tipping over Quinn’s paperclips in her office and using a gallon of blood to vandalize her apartment. One of the security people gives Quinn a hard time and someone trying to kill her.

In terms of the romance, I didn’t enjoy the characters that much and am entirely ambivalent about the whole thing. Quinn seemed gullible. Griffin seemed like a bit of a d•uche. Evan was also a character.

So this book has everything I love right now. A strong, sassy FMC and just the right amount of tension between her and the love interests. It has enough detail to make it feel deep, while not overexplaining everything. The ending was killer, so now I have to wait for the next one, but I'm so impatient 😭😭 Amazing book! Can't wait for number 2!!

I loved this!

My only issue was that it ended somewhat abruptly!

The plot was mainly focused on the build up of the relationship, but I found the characters compelling enough to not be bothered by that.

Can't wait for the next one.

This was heading towards 2 stars, but then - of all things - it ended on a cliffhanger.

The best thing about this book is the narrators.

I would have given this book a higher rating, which it would normally deserve, except that it is book 1 of a duet that should be a trilogy. This series is listed as complete, however, there are major plotlines that are not resolved. I'm not talking about minor little things, I'm talking about what is essentially the basis of the story. It was extremely disappointing, as other than a couple incorrect words, the writing was exemplary.
It almost felt as though the author just gave up on the series, which doesn't make sense to me, given how good the books are. I thought I had found a new author that I would enjoy reading, but given her treatment of this series, I will not be reading any more of her books.
I won't bother discussing the storyline, or the good points about the book, because why bother? The series was never completed, leaving the reader hanging. I won't be reading any other books from this author, nor will I recommend either book 1 or 2 of this series.

Havenfall Harbor Book one is a MFM menage romance. While the setting is a high school, this story is definitely not your everyday high school plot. Havenfall Harbor is a school for shifters and vampires. Mr.Stone (vampire) is the headmaster, Evan (bear) is head of security and Quinn (human) is a human/shifter liaison. Their chemistry is tricky, their pasts leave them jaded and yet they can't stay away from each other. Read to find out how Mr. Stone, Evan and Quinn handle threats, blood and other bumps along the way.

Can't wait to see where this story goes from here.

I read this as an ARC and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was amazing. It ducked me in fro page one. I love Quinn and her determination to stand up for both Humans and Supernatural beings and she stand up for herself when she is faced against those that may mean to cause her trouble. She instantly gains three friends. But one is lying to her, and her feelings toward two of them is changing. Read this fanatic book today to find out more about Quinn and Havenfall today.

Editing review after pondering this book for a few days, reading excerpts, and other reviews: Albany Walker has a very specific rhythm and cadence to her books, and this flow is not for everyone. In fact, I'm going to go so far as to say that it confuses some people because Walker's books are usually classified in the Romance/PNR genre, with a sub genre like mystery, or fantasy, etc. Some folks are upset by this because often times her first book in a series is a suuuuuuuuper slow burn, even going so far as to have little to no physical contact, making it feel like the mystery (or whatever) is the main focus of the book and should not be in the Romance category. The more of her work you read, you come to see the angst and slow burn, and how this category works well for these books.

Havenfall Harbor is book 1 in this duet, and I am so glad I finally took it off my TBR and devoured it!

Havenfall Harbor is a home and school for all ages of supernatural beings who are either orphaned or wayward and sent there either by mandate or by parents. Until Quinn showed up, the school was entirely supernatural beings.

Quinn was hired to bridge the gap between humans and the supes. While this was her dream for a long time, some of the students and staff weren't as receptive to her being there, and someone was making it known.

It started with what seemed like an innocent prank, and then it escalated into a bigger threat. Now Quinn's safety is being compromised, and she needs to be protected.

From the moment she walked on campus, Griffin knew he wanted Quinn. He was expecting "Quinn" to be a man, but when it turns out she was not, and extremely attractive, he was OK that he was wrong.

Evan and Griffin have been friends for years and years. Evan was with Griffin through his awful relationship and trusts Griffin completely. Griffin regards Evan as a brother because of their bond together. But Even has his eye on Quinn, and Griffin is being overly possessive. And Quinn is just trying to skate under the radar and not make waves at her new school.

One thing I love about Walker's work is how rich her characters are. I become engrossed in the story from page one, and I am completely whisked away into the novel setting.

She is the Queen of a good slow burn, and I feel helpless caught under this spell, not sure if I want to break free or not! You can feel the angst and tension between the characters. I just want to reach into the book and smush their faces together and scream JUST KISS ALREADY! 😂 So impatient, am I! But just as beautiful is ache of a dissonant chord, so too are our characters in this story. And unfortunately, because this book ends on a little cliffy, and we are still swirling in slow burn mode, that satisfaction of the chord resolution will just have to wait until book 2!! Ugh!

This was a really enjoyable, chill and fun read. I thought this was my first read from this author but it turns out, I had a DNF from her 'Becoming His' story. Contrary to the latter, I really enjoyed the start to this series. In anime, there's a genre called slice-of-life and that's what I thought of while reading this. There's definitely a slow-burn romance, some mystery but also of Quinn getting acquainted to her new life at Havenfall.

I loved Quinn, Griffin and Evan's characters. I thought being able to get all three of their POVs was a very good decision by Ms. Walker; it was especially fun when reading from Griff and Evan's side. Quinn is the type of teacher/counselor one would want at a school and clearly wants to help the students there. She has a quiet strength and way to handle negative situations with poise and maturity that's admirable. Griffin and Evan.. are like, dark and milk chocolate, respectively. One's a grump and the other a sweetie haha. Some of the best parts of the book are Evan's reactions/commentary to Griffin's floundering of his communication with Quinn. They are both clearly very different and so Quinn's interactions with them, likewise, reflect that. Lots of fun moments.

Early on, it seemed like there was more interaction between Quinn and Griff more than with Evan, but that came about more because of their job positions. This is definitely a slow-burn, although intentions are made pretty clear, which I appreciated. I also read some reviews that people thought this moved too slowly or not much occurred as far as the relationship side, and I can see how that might not be everyone's cup of tea. I love the build up and potential of what's to come; because although very little 'happened' between the three, Griff and Evan's desire for Quinn are so clear (to us).

This does end on a cliffhanger, but I thought it was a good stopping point. There's still a mystery to be solved which itself is interesting and because it was established very early on, it integrated very well to the whole story. I definitely will continue this series and would high recommend this if you're looking for a slow-burn, chill read.

I was really surprised by how much I liked this book. I have read Walker’s first book in the friends with monsters series and I liked it but wasn’t blown away.

This one however, really drew me in. The world was interesting in that a human was the minority in a refuge for supernaturals.

The dynamic was slowly (almost too slowly at points) built around the main characters and anticipation was high throughout of whether things would work out.

I liked the drama with the students and the overall mystery of what was happening with Quinn.

I’m definitely ready for the next book and I’ll most likely read this one again before it comes out.

Need more

I love Albany Walker I have literally devoured everything she has written. This book is no different. This one had me hooked from page one. This is a MFM Ménage, slow burn with off the charts chemistry between the characters. Multiple POV’s which I love.

The storyline amazing, it’s so different. We get to follow Quinn the FMC starting her new job at Havenfall Harbor which is a school for paranormal kids who are orphaned.

Between dealing with someone messing with her and trying to figure out who, she meets Griffin and Even complete opposites and best friends.

I need book 2 ASAP!

Any book written by Albany Walker is an automatic read for me and I read this duology days! I couldn't put it down. The writing is impeccable, this is a story that grabs you by neck and doesn't let go.

A deadly, ancient vampire meets a sassy, defiant human in the elevator. A powerful shifter meets a stubborn, resilient human walking up the drive. What else could happen but laugh-out-loud-banter, smile-ridiculously-to-yourself flirting and slide-off-your-seat smut scenes.

If you like paranormal romance and why choose with a side of mystery I highly recommend Havenfall Harbor.

Albany Walker is genuinely wonderful

The chemistry and organic friction created between her ND and love interests is always so beautiful and I love the different species she chooses for her characters. I cannot get enough and will anxiously be waiting for any supernatural books she drops.

This review is after reading books 1 (three stars) and 2 (two stars, the story is sacrificed for hookups). I'm not so sure I will continue with the series.

Super natural creatures have revealed themselves to humans. The FMC has just graduated from college. She is living back at home with her parents who hate the supes and are part of HERO (Think Fellow Ship of the Sun from True Blood). Vamps and Werewolves are born, not clear if they can be made. Puberty type thing activates their powers.

So FMC living at home, gets her dream job to go work for an orphanage/reform school for weres and shifters. No idea if there are other creatures. We don't have any idea why these two groups work together. We have a vague idea that the two make love interests work together because they found each other at desperate times in their past but two books in that hasn't been explained. So that's to say there is a lot of world building and character building that is lacking. Also, on the weak world building. We don't know how old our main character supernatural are. They are supposed to be somewhat old. I think the author wants them to be older than is feasible for being born in the US. One of the characters is supposed to have grown up in a building used in the story, and there are statements made that allude to the building being older than anything that would have ever have existed in the US in that time. Think, wanting a grand palace from the 1500s but in Colorado type of thing.

Part of that may be because large chunks of the books are devoted to telling you how turned on someone is or sex at really inopportune times. There is no hooking up until book 2, instead, in book 1 you have the viewpoint randomly flipping to one of the guys were they tell you how turned on they are. Every time this happens it is really jarring and pulls you out of the story. When you get to book 2 they will be racing to the security office to review tape of an attack and then smell arousal and say they have no control they literally have to have sex right that second. It's super out of place. That sort of hookup happens all the time in this series. You are constantly pulled from the emotions the actual story is trying to build to throw in a gratuitous hook up scene. It's just weak writing.

There are also issues with timing. You are following along and counting the days or the minutes between events and you haven't had weeks for something to happen like the author says or the characters will part. There will be a five minute dialog, and then they are like let's go find them and hours were supposed to have passed. There are other continuity errors like having the offices on the 3rd floor but saying a character, whose always in their third floor office, never goes to the third floor.

I don't particularly love or feel attached to the guys. I don't feel like they have any respect for the FMC and see her more as a play thing than a respected professional who they brought in to do a job. She didn't come in as a love interest, and wasn't forced upon them, so this makes no sense.

I'm not entirely sure I will continue with book 3. There isn't anything that I feel like I really need to know. Part of that is because the tension and suspense are always being interrupted. Part of it is because when you do have a plot climax it is a page and a half long followed by ten pages of hooking up. The story really suffers for some not that well written hookups.

Meh.

Loved this book
Confident, possessive and growly males
Kind FMC who is not sarcastic. She works towards her goals by being rational

No sex but lots of sexual tension. I love sexy times and this book was fantastic even without the sex.

Mind the freaking cliff!

I got hooked on Albanys books with Infinity Chronicles and then Friends with the Monsters, so I immediately pre-ordered this one when it became available. It did not disappoint!!!
Quinn is the perfect combination of smart, sassy, naive, and clumsy! Her guys are overprotective alphas that can't figure out how to tell a human that they both want her. I just wanted to slap Griff so hard so many times.
Of course it wouldn't be an academy based story without drama but Quinn has a great group of friends from day one!
I must warn you all, though, the book ended and I started telling that I NEED MORE!!! That's really the only complaint I have. I. Need. More. Now!!

As always Albany has not disappointed me and I am very impatiently waiting for the next book.

*I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving an advance copy but I also pre-ordered and downloaded it*

Talk about a slow burn 🥴
I liked the premise and setting of this academic school but also at times sounds like just refuge for vampires and shifters. But there wasn’t much too it. A quiet boring and basic who’s messing with the one human at the school mystery (but seriously- what does she even really do as a job??) kept the story kinda moving but Quinn was quite honestly just plain stupid. So much obvious stuff she didn’t notice, including the director storyline and the romantic attraction in general.
There really wasn’t much supernatural stuff going on either. I mean, we never even saw anyone shift, but we got a heck of a lot of talk about the power pecking order and alpha shit.
Overall flat storyline with boring characters.

Great start

Really loved the concept of this book, a human being being the only minority in this sup read! It's kinda brilliant! Quinn is not ur typical strong female since everyone is damn near super hero stronger then her since they are all sups, but she has other strengths that make her impossible not to love. She is caring and goes above and beyond to help, this is a faculty member worth having, and if she gets a little happily ever after, hey!!!! But there is someone or someone's trying to get her gone, and by the end of the book its more of less not only cause she's human. Totally recommend
