الأسماء والصفات كتاب في العقيدة الإسلامية من تأليف أبو بكر البيهقي يحتوي على أحاديث مسندة تتضمن أسماء الله وصفاته. وقد سماه البيهقي (كتاب أسماء الله جل ثناؤه وصفاته التي دل كتاب الله تعالى على إثباتها، أو دلت سنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، أو دل عليه إجماع السلف هذه الأمة قبل وقوع الفرقة وظهور البدع). قال الإمام محمد زاهد الكوثري: «"فقام [أي البيهقي] بتأليف كتاب (الأسماء والصفات) ساعيا في استقصاء ما ورد في الأبواب من الأحاديث مع تبيين الصحيح والسقيم منها، وتثبيت وجه الكلام في النصوص الواردة في الأسماء والصفات ناقلا عن قادة النظر وسادة التأويل المعاني المرادة منها فأحسن جد الإحسان وأجاد كل الإجادة إلا في مواضع يسيرة مغفورة في بحر إفضاله المواج فالله سبحانه يكافئه على هذا العمل المبرور جزاء من أحسن عملا، فإنه بعمله هذا انتشل عقلاء الرواة من أهل عصره ومن بعده مما تورطوا فيه من الزيغ، وعرف أهل النظر الأخبار الصحاح التي لا يسوغ لهم إنكارها من الروايات الكاذبة ردها فشفى وكفى".

"What we must believe is that Allah existed and nothing existed with Him; that He created all creation, including the Throne, without becoming subject to disclosure through them, nor did a direction arise for Him because of them, nor did He acquire a location in them; that He does not become immanent, that He does not cease to be transcendent, that He does not change, and that He does not move from one state to another." [pg. 111]

There has been a deliberate distortion in recent times of the true belief of Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama'ah, by people who have been influenced by some of the beliefs of astray groups like the Mujassimah. Couple that with selective statements from the scholars of the past in that distortion, and it can become very confusing for the layperson (as we see today). Works like this translated into English are very vital.
