Academy of Peculiars #1-3

The Academy of Peculiars Box Set

Rate this book
Stranger Book 1

Sophie Harper has a secret. A peculiar one.

By the time she gets to the Academy for Peculiars, she’s already killed a man. From there, she learns that the superhuman strength she was born with and abandoned because of means she's a peculiar – a human with abnormal DNA - yet that same strength alienates her from her peculiar peers because of its rarity.

As she settles into her new home, she makes friends with her dorm mates, stresses out about catching up with schoolwork, and starts dating one of the most popular guys at the academy. Normalcy is what Sophie wants more than anything, but she can’t change the fact that she’s different, even among peculiars. She starts falling for her infuriating trainer, a rugged shifter named Will, despite the fact that it's forbidden.

When she finds out there's only one other man with her physical strength, she yearns to learn more about him - yet he's someone everyone refuses to discuss. She starts to realize that being a peculiar means more than just being strong, and that just she shares her ability with her mysterious counterpart, it doesn’t mean he isn’t a threat.

Finder, Book 2

Those that aren't lost can't be found.

After the whole ordeal at the underground Catalina nightclub, Sophie is ready to forget about everything and enjoy the holidays with Will in Washington. As the weather cools down, things between them heat up. But Sophie is still with Jason, and she can't easily forget that. On top of that, Sophie receives a letter from her parents wanting to meet and asking for her forgiveness. When Jane Cabot, her best friend, is mortally wounded by an unknown assailant, Sophie must question everyone and everything around her in order to bring her best friend to justice. Things don't add up, however, and despite Jane being attacked, Sophie is the true target. When she gets taken by a familiar face, pieces of a puzzle start to fall into place, and she's not sure she wants to be found.

Keeper, Book 3

Danger lurks in the most familiar places.

When General Arbuckle reveals the peculiar existence to the world, the Academy of Peculiars is forced to close as a way to protect the faculty and students. Sophie Harper is more focused on the fact that her best friend, Jane, may actually be alive than Arbuckle and the United States military. Daryl's older and mental brother, Marvin, is quick to promise Jane's safe return after brokering a deal with Daryl and Ethan, the academy's dean. But something doesn't sit well with Sophie about Marvin, and if Jane wasn't involved, she's certain Daryl wouldn't have trusted his brother. On top of that, a familiar body winds up slaughtered at the academy gates. Now it's up to Sophie to figure out who could have done it and why, while dodging flying bullets and suspicious ex-boyfriends. Will wants nothing more to protect her; Sophie wants nothing more than find her friend - and herself.

In the epic conclusion to the Academy of Peculiars Trilogy, Sophie will learn that just because someone is ambitious does not mean they're evil, those that she trusts the most have the power to betray her with relative ease, and the best relationship she can ever hope to have is the one with herself.

Located on Catalina Island, the Academy of Peculiars is for those who have unusual abilities, be it shifting into an animal, reading someone’s mind, or moving something with your mind. Sophie is found in Tahoe by Ethan, the founder and dean of the academy, and Will, a wolf shifter who works as a trainer and recruiter. She is starting very late because her parents abandoned her and she has been on her own for years so the school couldn’t find her. Sophie is a very rare physical, someone with super strength. One of her new roommates is Jane. Jane has just discovered that she can mentally move objects, which she thought was impossible because she is an animus, a mind reader. Turns out she’s a quis, a mind reader with telekinesis, which is even rarer than Sophie. Unfortunately, two such rare Peculiars have people after them, both fellow peculiars and the military. Luckily they have each other and the professors to protect them. Even though it’s forbidden, Sophie and Will become close and he helps to keep her safe. Jane is learning about being a quis from another professor, Nikolai Depogare, who is actually one of only two others known. Although it shocks her at first, Jane comes to rely on Professor Depogare more and more, which turns into something stronger on both sides. I really enjoyed this series. The heroines were truly heroic and were strong young women who grew personally along with their powers. The male characters were well written and interesting in their own rights, and while being protective, treated the women as equals. The Academy of Peculiars Box Set has Books 1-3 in the series. The stories are a cross between the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children series and X-Men, except much more romance. The young women, though super badass in many ways, were also very immature. I found myself yelling at them at times as I knew they were walking into trouble even though they were comfortable and felt all was well. Girls just want to have fun, especially girls with supernatural powers. The men are all much older, and yes, a tad controlling, and also in possession of intense supernatural powers.

Each story has suspense, mystery, many twists, and tons of toe-curling romance. It does take place in a school, and the typical and atypical school activities occur. It is interesting to see how everyone interacts and copes.

I hope that there are more books in this series as I love the characters, and I want to see how they progress and what other adventures they might find themselves in. Ready for Books 4-6....hint hint!

Stranger was a good, well-written book, reminiscent of Jennifer Malone Wright and similar authors, I can't help but be amazed by the volume of writing Heather Myers can produce. I'll read more by her in the future and look forward to the second book in this series.

Finder was a good, well-written book, again reminiscent of Jennifer Malone Wright and similar authors, this storyline calls to mind Marvel Comic's X-Men. I can't help but be amazed by the volume of writing Heather Myers can produce. I'll read more by her in the future and look forward to the third book in this series.

Breakneck pace, intricately & tightly woven story line, Keeper was a very good, well-written book, reminiscent of Jennifer Malone Wright, Alicia Rades, Kristin D. Van Risseghem and similar authors, The third in a series, different than what I've read from her before, I can't help but be amazed by the volume & variety of writing Heather C. Myers can produce. I'll read more by her in the future.

Stranger:
This is an intriguing and entertaining story about the Academy of Peculiars students and the different powers they have. I loved the interactions between Sophie, Jane and Elle. I look forward to reading the rest of the series to find out what happens next for the students at the Academy.
Finder:
Finder is book two of the Academy of Peculiars Saga and continues where book one left off. In this book Sophie decides to spend the Christmas break with Will, Jane gets attacked and Depogare comes to her rescue, but was he too late to save her? There is so much going on in this book and I recommend you read book one to fully understand what's going on in this book. There's drama, danger, suspense, intrigue, romance and an ending that left me ready to read book three.
Keeper:
Keeper is book three and a great conclusion to the Academy of Peculiars Saga. This book picks up where book two left off and is a fast paced read filled with unexpected twists that make this a page turner.

Our heroine is a peculiar, one with special gifts that set her apart from everyone, including other peculiars. Will she be able to learn to accept her power and find a place to fit in?

This is the complete collection in one set, including three novel length stories.

I have read a lot of academy style stories recently from multiple different authors and this one is among the best in my opinion. Whereas you still get some of the standard school/academy tropes like cliches and bullies, there is far less of a focus on them and more on the storyline and our heroine. I found that to be rather refreshing. I also found the stories to be well written and easy to read with a diverse cast of characters that had some depth to them. Overall, this was a great series and it is nice to have them all in one bundle.

Highly recommended.

A great read

Although it was a little hard for me to get into to begin with I'm very pleased that I kept reading. The story itself wasn't the problem, as from the first page it was interesting and well written.
As the trilogy progressed I was gripped by the storyline and characters.
I did find that Ellie, one of the initial main characters just disappeared from the story during the second book only to have another tiny mention at the very end of book three. This left me wondering what had happened as there was no explanation of her disappearance.
Another slight annoyance was the grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. I noticed a few words which were not used in the right context and some which sounded phonetically similar but were of a totally different meaning.
Overall if you are ok with overlooking the mistakes it's a very readable trilogy.

Peculiars. People born with special abilities to normal parents. Sophie has always been alone and a loner. Her parents gave her up because of her peculiar ability, she grew up in foster care, and left and was on her own by sixteen. When Will and Ethan find her and take her to the Academy for Peculiars she finally has a home, friends, and potential boyfriends. But then she is kidnapped, her friend is attacked and then kidnapped. The government and another peculiar want she and her friend Jane to use them as warriors and to breed their DNA into future children. With the help of friends and lovers they will be free to live their life, but not before sacrifices are made, and they will be betrayed by friends they trust. When you go from being homeless and unwanted to being with the man you call your home.

I read the first of the books in this series a while ago. Having now read all three, I can say that I’ve enjoyed the journey soo much! Starting with the discovery by Sophia that she isn’t alone, and there is some place that she’s welcome and wanted. The girls that she befriends, their bond of trust, their journey to find their powers, and then finding the men that they love is a lovely tale. One woven with action, twist plots, danger, and loss, that in turn brings them all closer together. The books characters are fun, have depth, and very life like. Sorry to finish the books, they were so much fun.

What an unusually good series. An Academy full of Peculiar people who have abnormal DNA giving them superhuman strength to read minds, mentally move things, incredible hulk strength, etc. Society’s misfits brought together to learn and develop their abnormalities to function in the real world. However, with power come great responsibility and dangers to be aware of and protect. The series focus on three primary couples – ironically student and professor type relationships that must overcome many obstacles. Forbidden love, kidnapping and mysterious monsters are woven throughout this series to keep your attention and questioning what’s next for these couples.

I really liked this series. It is the story of Sophie and how she ends up finding out she has powers and ends up at the Academy of Peculiars after killing someone. So it was fun to read about her adventures as she ends up making friends and meeting some hot boys. Of course there was action, adventure, murder, betrayal and learning about herself. It was a great series and a blast to easily read it all in one set. It was hard to put down and stop reading after just one book. We met a lot of characters both good and bad and some I was not sure were on what side. Sophie's family show up and that causes some issues along with her ex-boyfriends. Just a fun series.

I LOVED THIS SERIES!!!!!! All the characters were so great. I loved that the story line in each book was from a different characters point of view and that it did not confuse the plot or throw it off. Sophie, Jane, Ellie, Will, Nikolai, Brielle, even Michael and Ethan all played major parts in each others life and in the story. You get to know each one of these characters through their counterparts. It was easy to read, easy to stay focused on and I am sad now that it has come to an end. Guess I will just have to reread them again.

The Academy of Peculiars is a school for people who have special abilities. They range from the ability shift into an animals, to being able to read minds. Sophie is unusual even among this group since she is gifted with super strength, an extremely rare ability. This series reminded me of X-men but with more romance. Sophie makes friends at the academy and meets some hot boys but someone wants to take advantage of her and her best friends rare abilities. This leads to danger and adventure and the suspense keeps the story interesting! I definitely recommend this well written and easy to read series!

One of the best box sets I have read, and I read a lot of books.

Finding the lost, the different, and teaching them to be themselves and how to fit in at the same time is what the Academy of Peculiars is all about. Toss in a good deal of advise about growing up, and several romances, and a lengthy confrontation with a greedy military man and his cohorts and it makes for fine reading. The author does need to clean up multiple instances of improper tense or incorrect word usage, but still earns her five stars.

Awesome series

Loved the different take on the supernatural teenagers and an academy for them. Well thought out plots, characters and dialogue. No graphic love scenes but enough drama to entice. An awesome series for young adults and up. Really loved the writing style. A must read series!

The Academy of Peculiars Box Set

This is a good series and I enjoyed reading the three stories in one book, I felt for some of the characters in both a positive and a negative way, as in WTF at times and is there a brick wall close by in others

A Fun read

These were a nice, relaxing read with a hint of spice and some interesting twists on the XMen trope. Original and worth reading, especially when you want a story to make you feel good and smile. Still not sure how I feel about the teacher and student relationships, though.

Sorry but after a few chapters it was too hard trying to keep track of who was who. Three main characters, all girls, just seemed to flow into each other. Each chapter would jump between two characters and the others would be infill . I gave up and deleted these from my kindle.

Good ideas...mainly

3.5 stars. There are a lot of things I liked about this series, characters were interesting and the storyline had suspense, mystery, danger, secret abilities/powers and more. I wasn't a fan of some of the relationships portrayed within the books.
