Once Upon a Curse #4

Parting Worlds

Rate this book
She'll risk it all to be with the man she loves… Parting Worlds is a fantasy romance that reimagines the classic fairy tale of The Little Mermaid.

"I know humans like to start these sorts of stories with 'once upon a time,' but I'm worried that's setting the stage for false hopes. Because we don't all live, and we aren't all happy. Not every curse can be broken, after all."

Humans are dangerous. That's the lesson faeries are taught as soon as their flower petals unfurl, welcoming them into the world. It's the first thing Aerewyn remembers the priestesses telling her as a young girl. Humans are dangerous—don't show them your magic and never cross into their lands.

Why then, when she stumbles upon a human boy in the woods, does she find him so intriguing?

His blue eyes don't shine with malice. His smile doesn't menace. His laughter is as warm as the sun against her cheeks. And when she later discovers he's been knocked unconscious in a storm, injured and alone in the forest, the only thing he seems in danger of is dying.

So she saves his life—a single act that will change the fate of both their worlds…

Reading physical books, ever since I have a special to be read bookcase, is much more satisfying. I see that case emptying, I see that my books are moving. And yet, I really wanted to read this last e-book in the Once Upon a Curse series as soon as possible! This series quite easily stole my heart and even though I am kinda said that this was the last book, although there is some room for more, I enjoyed the ride from start to finish.

Davis writes the way I wanna write and the way I wanna read. Her stories are driven by emotions and the focus is on what the characters are feeling, what they are going through and what they are learning. That means that action wise not that much is happening in the books and yet I never grow bored. Because everything the characters feel, I feel too and in the end, when all is said and done and all lessons are learned, I always feel that tear rolling down my cheek.

And that also happened in this book, even though Aerewyn and I are completely different people. Everything I would never do, Aerewyn does. I can so imagine that people around her get annoyed by her constant longing for adventure, for breaking the rules. And yet, her journey and all the challenges she faced, it did move me in the end. The lessons she learned were so beautiful and I think the price she paid for her recklessness was incredibly high. It makes her story heartbreaking and heartwarming at once.

That's also because Davis created a wonderful world and mythology and in this final book the last pieces fall into place too. Everything works. Everything is so well thought out. All the details really make sense. And even though these books are fairytale retellings, the elements of the fairytales are used so creatively and originally that the stories feel incredibly fresh and new.

I'm gonna miss this amazing dystopian fairytale world. I'm gonna miss all those characters. And maybe a part of me will keep on hoping that one day Davis returns to this world and decides to tell us just a few more stories.

Thoughts with side commentary:

🐚 I actually almost cried while listening to this 😅
🐚 I know "Chasing Midnight" kind of showed it, I'm very confused about how Nymia and Aerewyn found each other at the end
🐚 While this did explain why the events of the first couple books happened, it still didn't quite explain the earthquake
🐚 This book has a dog
🐚 Nothing says romance like comparing feet sizes😂
🐚 Overall, this was a really fun and enjoyable series
🐚 Each book features a different set of characters but they all meet up eventually (similar to The Lunar Chronicles)

If you all thought I was done shoving the Once Upon a Curse series after reviewing Chasing Midnight and the cover reveal for Parting Worlds, you were definitely, surely wrong.
you can't get rid of me that easily shadowhunters

Parting Worlds brings everything together.
Parting Worlds is the fourth and final book in the Once Upon a Curse series, a retelling based on The Little Mermaid. This starts right where Chasing Midnight ends before going back to the very beginning and bringing everything to full circle.

We get a little intro to who Aerewyn is back in the third book, but Parting Worlds is where we truly get to know who she is and her side of the story. We get the chance to see her bond with Nymia and how it forms from complete strangers as young faeries to best friends as they train to become priestesses, where they can use their magic to protect fellow magical creatures.

I personally loved seeing their friendship bloom and how it ultimately withstands in the centuries of time they're apart from each other. I also loved seeing how they have ups and downs in their relationship and how they try to overcome those without straining it. It shows how they have a close bond with each other despite their differences.

I think Parting Worlds also gives us a chance to truly see Nymia's growth as a character as this is set before the third book but still connected. Chasing Midnight also shows her growth, but it was brief and fleeting as much of the focus was not in the past and rather on how she changes throughout the book through the events.

Going back to where all the disaster begins.
And finally, through Aerewyn's story, Kaitlyn Davis shows us how all of this began in the first place. I had so many questions after reading the third book and a lot of them were answered in Parting Worlds. Aerewyn's a faerie full of mischief and seeks to bend the rules whenever she can this sounds like me. She questions how the world can be different, where humans and magical creatures can live together in harmony, especially when she meets Erick and starts forming a relationship with him. Honestly, it's the Butterfly Effect in a fairy tale dystopia and I am living for it.

The majority of the book focuses on how Aerewyn and Erick meet and how their meeting becomes fateful for the rest of the world. But Aerewyn still grows as a character: she's still mischievous and up to no good, but she learns how her actions became major consequences for everyone, including herself. And I love how Davis does this really well.

A bittersweet end, but maybe there are more stories.
I don't know about anyone else, but Parting Worlds feels bittersweet with a (sort of?) happy ending. This puts the final piece of the story together with no loose ends in the story; it's answering all of the questions that have been there since Gathering Frost and connecting all the books together. At the same time, there sounds like there could potentially be another storyline in the future. If that happens, you know what I'm doing.

Aerewyn has been told all her life how bad humans were, how dangerous they were, never to trust to them ever but most of all never ever cross over into their world. But Aerewyn like any young girl when she is told not to do something is then very curious and must see for herself if what she has been told since she was a little girl is true or not.

Aerewyn talks her sister Nymia, against her better judgement of course into cross over into the human world to investigate things a little further on her own. Aerewyn is a very inquisitive little girl and needs answers of her own not someone else’s. So Aerewyn and Nymia cross worlds and end up the human world and while they are there Aerewyn meets a boy a human boy that is unlike other humans. He is not malicious or dangerous no he is kind and a very beautiful person inside and out.

Aerewyn and Nymia’s venture into the human world just may cause Aerewyn more than she is willing to pay or give up if they are caught. Their worlds, human and fae alike may change as they know it and it may not be the way they would want or like. Not only could it turn out to be dangerous for both humans and fae Aerewyn may end up losing more than she ever thought possible. Will Aerewyn find love? Is Erick the boy she believes him to be? Will he betray her? Can she trust him? Who is this Erick?

Parting Worlds is a fast paced read once I picked it up there was no way I could lay it down until I had read the last world. Parting Worlds is the fourth book in the Once Upon a Curse world and I have read them all and enjoyed each and every one tremendously. I have enjoyed each and every fairy tell retelling. I have loved each and every world as well as all the characters. I have loved watching them become the people they are and how they all ways want to help someone else.

I highly recommend any book in this world, the Once Upon a Curse world. What and amazing and incredible world it is.

Overall, my least favorite of the entire series. I had to convince myself to finish it, otherwise I would have stopped. I am not entire sure what it was about the book that I disliked.

** DNF **

I was listening to this book via Hoopla app at work. I got about half way through and just could not finish it.

I love renditions of fairy tales and folk lore. I have not read a lot of The Little Mermaid renditions, mostly Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. I was excited for this one, but just could not get into it.

The story held true to the main plot of The Little Mermaid, just one MAJOR difference. "Ariel" is a Fairy, not a mermaid. I like the authors spin the most on how "Ariel" couldn't speak to Eric. However, I just couldn't get past the fact you can have The Little Mermaid remake, and make her a land fairy instead of a mermaid. Just my personal issue I could not get past.

This is an interesting and unusual little mermaid story. It spans over 900 plus years and interesting enough pulled together my love, almost unrequited love. I really can't tell you anything more because it's so deeply intertwined. A girl falls in love with a boy, boy falls in love with a girl. The family betrays the boy and the girl's fairy magic is stolen, she turns into a fairy flower and he spends his whole life, literally living to find and fix the problem. The main fairy queen finds him and brings him to her hidden sanctuary where she saved as much magic as she could. With his love sacrifice, he promises his protection to have his love back until he's able to have his love back and a world where both magic and humans can live in peace. Sad but strangely endearing.

This was my favorite of the series so far, and I liked how Davis continues to pick and chose the elements of the original fairy tale that she puts in her book. I liked Aerewyn and Eric as characters, and even though I knew they were doomed, it was still exciting to see exactly how that fateful day played out. I would have liked more resolution at the end . Once again, these audiobooks were so quick and easy to devour, which is always enjoyable.

A dystopian variation of the Little Mermaid.

After making a simple mistake which smashed together both the magic and human worlds almost a thousand years ago, Nymia’s sister, Erowyn has finally returned to the new world. This is the story of the events leading to her meeting the prince and the betrayal.

Lots of fairy life and fun, then tragedy, then a pending love that spans a millennium until time for reunion.

Fave scenes: Nymia & Erowyn’s cave, Erowyn & Eric’s starry night, the roses and the Priestess’s plan.

I liked this one a lot better than Chasing Midnight, but it still doesn’t compare to Gathering Frost. Aerewyn’s love for the humans and their wonders was so endearing. And don’t even get me started on Eric and Roo. This was a great audiobook series to listen to and I highly recommend it to all fairy tale lovers.

Couldn’t put this book down!

Excellent and unique retelling of the Little Mermaid. There were facets of the original story, but many twists and turns that kept me entranced. This book serves as a prequel that explains much of the back story for the other books, but has life of its own. It is my favorite of the series so far and the characters are dynamic. Can’t wait for more!

This started out so well and I devoured it at first… but somewhere around 70-80% it started to fall apart for me. I found the back and forth time jumps confusing. I felt like the explanation of what happened and why was not entirely clear. Really struggled to get through the last hour of the book, especially with the time jumps.

Parting Worlds, the fourth and final book in the Once Upon a Curse series is the re-imagined version of the classic, The Little Mermaid.
This book gives us the more detailed story of Aerewyn from the last book, and how she met Nymia and they became friends while training. This book also brings us back to the beginning, and how this whole series began with her meeting Erick, a human boy, and how her actions change the course of everyone around her. Although she has been told that humans are dangerous, when she meets Erick, her views change. Can saving Erick really be so bad for both their worlds? And will Aerewyn and Erick find their true love?

Unique twist on the Little Mermaid, tying all the loose knots in the series, explaining the whole backstory, yet leaving enough space for reader's imagination to fill in the parts behind the scenes.
Erick and Aerewyn were doomed from the very beginning. A human and a faerie, born as natural enemies on the opposite sides of the protection veil, they were never even supposed to meet, not yet fall in love. The Mother had obviously different plans, though... and the strength of their love led to many choices; reckless, emotional, but loyal and full of love. Destruction caused by greed was never intended, yet from the ashes, a new world can be born,a world of harmony and peace. If only the dreams of a faerie can come to life..
I enjoyed this sweet love story marked by grief, despair, and inability to resist the heart's call. Star-crossed couple fighting for their own little place in this world, destroyed by those who should be caring and supporting. Ignorance and narrow-mindedness can lead to great tragedies only time is able to heal fully. Aerewyn is a fine heroine, delicate yet strong, innocent, even naive, driven by her curiosity and restlessness. Erick, on the other side, is shaped to a wonderful man by his choices in the world where he is outcast. Together, they form a wonderful couple of main characters that steer the story to an hopeful ending.

The foreshadowing at the beginning was just wrong. And I thought Aerewyn was difficult to like because she kept doing incredibly stupid stuff. I also thought it was too far away from the Little Mermaid to really be a retelling of that story. Sure Aerewyn loses her voice and someone misheard her name as Ariel once but that was it. I kept reading just to rush to the end.

There were some lovely moments, like all the parts with the dog Ru, the Phoenix and the love story but it wasn't enough for me to recommend this book.

She'll risk it all to be with the man she loves... Don't miss PARTING WORLDS, a fantasy romance from bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis that reimagines the classic fairy tale of The Little Mermaid.

This is a beautiful retelling of this classic tale.
Wonderful plot and story line that has vivid world building.
Characters have been fleshed out so well and are believable.
Beautiful romance with a few twists involved kept me engaged throughout.
Can't wait to read more!!!

A heartwarming ending to a beautiful adventure. I loved how Kaitlyn tied everything together at the end and explained the origin and mystery to the ways magic seeped into humans and caused so much destruction. I thought Aerewyn was positively adorable! She had a youthful naivety while still having a strong heart and will. I loved her relationship with Nymia and how they were able to stay in each other's lives even once they have moved on and made their own paths. Eric was equally if not even more adorable than Aerewyn and the fact that he waited 900 YEARS for her was BEYOND romantic! That really touched my heart. I'm sad to see this series end, but so happy with how it all came together.

Amazing read and retelling of the little mermaid. I really enjoyed this read from start to end. Great writting and storyline with unique characters. Aerewyn is told that humans are dangerous but, she saves a boy from dying. What will happen to her? Well, you have to get this amazing story to find out. I love this fairytale and so will you.
