Good: Lucas Hawthorne, Lucas Hawthorne, Lucas Hawthorne... and Alice Kendall

Meh: no mehs!

This was my first historical romance book ever. I read it when was about 14 or so and loved historical romance ever since. I let a friend borrow it in high school and was unable to find it until about 2 years ago (that is about 10 years of not having it). Let's just say, my reread didn't disappoint. I love Lucas Hawthorne. He is my book crush forever. He has so many layers, just when you think you know him, something else is revealed and you fall all over again.

Alice was a great heroine. I liked her drive and personality. She had something to prove and wasn't going to let her family or being a woman get in her way.

5 stars. All day, Every day. I am shocked that more people have reviewed this book because it is a keeper for sure that will have you guessing and swooning till the last page.

(Also, this is the 3rd book in a series. The others books are far below this one in caliber. I would skip those two and read this. If you have desire to read the other two, then go ahead, but AFTER this one!)

I've been trying to read this for literal years and I think it's finally time to give it up. I was intrigued by the setting - nineteenth-century Boston - but Lee didn't really do very much with it; there's no real sense of place, and her characters are absolutely not living in the nineteenth century... although it's in an obnoxiously sloppy way, where e.g. an upper-class woman working as an attorney mentions doing her own laundry (uh do you have any idea how much labor was involved in doing laundry in the 1880s?).

Sequel to Swan's Grace, following the 3rd brother. This was my favorite of the 3, although it really wasn't any more believable than the other two! ;)
