It's hard enough being a chameleon shifter with wonky powers... but opening Jewels Cafe in a supernatural town like Silver Springs? Maybe not the best idea.
I thought I could work side by side with my best guy friend... but now I have to juggle hiding my crush for him and putting our cafe on the map. Because if no one in Silver Springs realizes that we've got this hidden gem soon, we might go out of business!
So what do we do? Create a signature drink with hints of pumpkin spice just in time for fall.
Surprise, surprise. I take one sip and I”m thrown for another loop. The sweetest bear shifter is drawn to me like honey. A sexy bunny shifter offers me his carrot. They don’t even seem to mind that I accidentally shift into everyone I meet.
But can my chameleon powers save Jewels Cafe? Can I juggle these two hot shifters and my childhood crush? And what happens when a spell threatens to tear us apart?
Mia Harlan lives in Canada with her husband (who’s definitely Not a Vampire) and their adorably fluffy cat. They recently welcomed a Mini Mortal (a baby girl) and are happy to report she doesn't have fangs.
Mia is a librarian by day and an author by night. She's been reading romance since she turned 13 and published her first novel in mid-2019. She writes humorous, quirky (and mostly paranormal) reverse harem romance as Mia Harlan. She also plans to start publishing teen paranormal romance as Mia Meade once her Mini Mortal is a tad older and she can get back to her writing routine.
It's been a while since I've read and enjoyed a paranormal/supernatural novel as I used to read a lot of them when I was in my late teens / early adult years but then I got over them as they felt all the same. Recently, however, this new series Jewel's Cafe caught my eye were a number of authors have written a book using a gem. The books are also Reverse Harem which drew me in. Amber starts off with Amber and Julian at the cafe that they now own - Jewel's Cafe in Silver Springs. It was great when they first opened but the last few months, they have only had the odd customer in. To make matters worse for Amber - her arch-nemesis Minerva aka Mini has opened a successful bakery across the road from them and is always hanging around Julian. For the past six years, Amber has loved Julian but never had the courage to tell him as whenever Mini's around - she catches his attention. Amber is a chameleon shifter and her last straw was when she accidentally shifted into Minerva and saw the way Julian looked at her. She leaves and falls into the arms of Wes - a bear shifter who tells her she is his mate. The pair head back to the cafe where Wes tells her about the bad juju vibes and also in the cafe is Chase - a rabbit shifter who loves to talk about his "carrot". Turns out Julian tried a spell and has ended Amber up with not one but three lovers. Amber also learns the truth of Julian's feelings and why their cafe has been suffering. I have to admit the suffering part, I had a feeling as it was quite an easy guess but did like the Reverse Harem twist with the different sorts of shifters as it's not every day we read about a handsome "bunny" shifter. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in this series - Sapphire by Eva Delaney.
There was no substance to the story. It was very superficial. No world building or character development. I also didn’t think that it was funny. It was too cheesy for me. And I’m not against insta-love but saying I love you the first they meet is a bit too much for me. Even the little smut that was there, I just sort of glanced through it or skipped sections. Needless to say, I won’t continue the series.
I had everything plannend for today. I had a book ready on my nightstand, my alarm set so I could read an hour before work. And then I woke up with this craving, this urge to read a Jewels Cafe story. That bad that I actually got out of my warm bed to get my iPad and buy the book on Amazon so I could get started right away.
And I'm so incredibly glad that I got this one! I already read quite a few others in the Jewels Cafe series, but I had never read the first one, the one that started it all, the one about the Cafe itself and the Pumpkin Spice Lattes. And I can say: I totally missed out on some true awesomeness! The first book is not just an amazing kickoff of this wonderful series, perfect for the heavy time of the year, it's also an amazing story in itself.
Amber and her guys are all wonderful characters. It was so easy to relate to Amber, to understand her struggles and worries and fears. I really felt for her and there were moments I wanted to scream at her, knowing very well I couldn't change a bit. And her guys were all three so sweet and loving and caring and nice. If I will even find one man like them, patient and willing to express feelings and voice compliments, I'll be a very lucky woman.
And on top of amazing characters, this book also had a great plot! I loved the wonky magic, the shapeshifting, the accidental mating and the search to figure out what had happened and what that meant for them and their feelings. I also really loved the side story of why the cafe wasn't that much of a success at first, although it was of course quite predictable. Not that it matters. Light, easy and maybe slightly predictable is exactly what I need and want right now.
I will finish reading the rest of the first series first and then I'll get to the sequels. I can't wait to read more about Amber and her guys!
A cute, short read. It could have been a great story but it was too short. The whole book occurs in the space of one day. A spell is cast and all of a sudden we have fated mates (insta love). If the characters/world/relationships had been developed further it could have been a great story, but as I said, it is just a cute short read.
This is a book where, after I've finished it, I sit there and think "What have I just read?" I was on the fence between one or two stars, but I'd feel so harsh giving it one since there was such potential in the story. I found the premise of the book interesting and that's what kept me going, the hope that it'd pick up. A chamelon shifter falls in love with a bear, and bunny shifter, and throw in a friends to lovers plot? I'm sold. But she was a chamelon shifter in terms of taking the form of other humans, which wasn't really what I was hoping for. There was never a moment where shifting came particularly important, there was no shifting. The plot could have been the same with all but Julian being human. As for the plot, it came out of nowhere. Julian and Amber are both terrible at magic (which is never explained why, nor is there experience at magic school expanded on). The plot with the OW started okay but then never went anywhere until the overly dramatic ending. The romance just wasn't interesting. I like books with mates, but the kind of mates that say I love you on the same day you meet? No thank you. This was definitely a low two stars. I'd just hoped for more when I opened the book, so I think it's safe to say I won't be carrying on the series.
No depth. No substance. Childish interactions. The main character Amber has the emotional level of a middle schooler. I think there was an attempt at humor but it was lost in translation with low quality writing. Will not continue this series.
The premise of the story was cute; a love spark spell that goes wrong and instead works as a mate magnet. I liked the guys Wes, Chase, and Julian. Amber's insecurities were ridiculous. Her over the top insecurities and misunderstanding of the situation was super annoying, hence the lower rating. I hope the next has more of the guys and less of Amber's angst.
Great story about a chameleon shifter, who is awesome by the way. This is book 1 of the series. Amber has been in love with Julian for six years. She's convinced he loves the witch that owns the bakery across the street. My first time reading this author and it won't be my last. Really enjoyed reading it. I read this through the KU program.
This is a short, fluffy read. It did make me laugh, but was a little lacking in depth. I would have liked a little world building, and some more oomph behind the characters. It was pretty predictable, but not annoyingly so.
I love the RH genre - otter much everything about it. But, RH is a trope that seems to do better when built over time - at least in my opinion. This is a stand alone, and quite an amusing one, but it craves all that good romance and fuzzy feelings into one short novel, offering a disservice to the characters. Then again, the plot wouldn’t have carried to two, so I can see the point. And this is an entertaining, if quick, read. And a shared universe too!
Pros: - Best friend to love trope, le sigh.... always love that. - Insta matter and insta love trope, but it’s kinda the point here. - Oblivious best friend (s).... cause let’s face it, they’re both idiots. - Funny. - Carrot..
Cons: - Very Fast - Too short - Plot is shaky - Amber is so incredibly insecure it almost annoying. I’m That Girl.... I don’t want to read about her too, lol
I loved this so much. I picked it up because everyone has been raving about it and I’m so glad that I did within the first page I was riveted. I was laughing and I couldn’t put it down. Cannot wait to read more in this series 😊
A little drama and a whole load of sugar. Three guys, multiple POVs. The MC is a little bit whiny but who can blame her. I liked the series opening, brief intro to other jewels and the chameleon meltdowns.
This was cute and funny. It was a little predictable. It was a bit annoying how all the magic kept going wrong but I guess that part was suppose to be funny. Quirky just isn’t my thing.
This was okay but couldn't really hold my attention too much. I have been reading a lot of books like this and this one just didn't hold anything special for me. I'm going to read more in the series to see if I'm just having a bad reading day. This should have had everything that I like but i just found myself waiting for something to happen.
This is a fun read that will give you all the good feels. It is cute, with a little bit of mystery, humor and reminds you that you need to really talk to each other. I just love the people in Silver Springs and I am enjoying getting to know them all
I wasn't a fan of this. The insta-love is so strong that the entire book takes place in less than 24 hours, with everyone proclaiming their love at the end. The "bad guy" was obvious from the beginning. The plot was more like alternating scenes of angst and fluff than actual plot. The bear shifter insists on calling the MC "Ambear" instead of "Amber" and I cringed every single time.
Also, just a side note, I thought a chameleon shifter would be a human who shifts into a chameleon, and I like books with people who shift into animals outside the norm. Instead, the MC is a human who can shift her appearance to look like other humans. That's not a bad thing and it didnt make me like the book any less, but it's not what I was expecting.
So I'm not big on instalove and there's not nearly enough to this story. There's very little time spent on world building and most of the established relationships are built through thoughts and conversations about memories. That said the part where Julian calls his mother was so funny I couldn't even breathe I was laughing so hard and when I did finally manage to calm down enough to take a breath I started laughing that hard all over again. Seriously that scene makes the book worth reading 10 times over.
The book could have been a lot better if it had taken more than a few hours of character time from beginning to end, as in two out of three of her love interests meet her and declare everlasting love only hours later. Relationships take time and interaction and its that time and interaction that makes romances worth reading. As a reader I want to watch the characters fall in love and actually believe that its the sort of love to last a lifetime. That's not going to happen with instalove and that's why I'm not the only person who complains about it.
The world has potential as do the characters in it, but the book doesn't really live up to that. That said it is hilarious which is what makes it worth the time.
Oh my goodness this was a great book. In loved Amber and the gang. I read this book in one sitting. My only drawback was that I WANTED MORE!!
Amber finds her mates in a weird way. How it happens was a mystery to me but all unfolded as you read along. My heart went out to her. You can only keep a secret love for so long before you crumble. Also With The cafe on the rocks, something is bound to give? Who will be there to help hee. What will she do when she meets her mates? Oh boy So much happens in a short amount of time. So much is revealed?
I laughed and shook my head during this book. I was truly invested. This book is a great start to the Silver Springs series. I highly recommend. You will get a happily ever after.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Amber was a fun quick read. I love the main characters personality. The only thing that I wasn't the biggest fan of, but I knew going in ahead of time, was that it was sort of an instant love story. Amber has been in love with her best friend for as long as she has known him. It was nice to relate to a character who wasn't perfect looking or a size extra small. I liked that she had a relatable background, minus the wires sticking out of her head and the red beard. It showed us her awkward years that everyone goes through, some have harder times than others. I loved Wes, then hated him, then loved him again. Julian was okay, liked him more in the end after Mini. Then there is Chase and his carrot. Very good, funny and a smidge emotional at times short story with a HEA.
It was funny and quirky in the best way, as well as steamy and romantic. When the story was over I was BEGGING for more. And thankfully, Mia is currently writing more about Amber and her men, so YAY! Can't. Wait.
I'm excited to see what's next from this author and to check out the rest of the Jewel's Café series!
1 Star = DNF. 2 Star = Finished. Didn’t really enjoy. 3 Star = Finished. Story was neither good nor bad. 3.5 Star = Finished. Story was neither good nor bad. Will probably pick up next in series if there is one. 4 Star = Finished. Enjoyed story & would reread. 5 Star = Stole my heart! ❤️
This book is such a fun, lighthearted and hot rom com. The writing is so good that there’s no slow bits in it. The men are awesome, especially Wes, my personal favorite. It has a villain and the MC Amber is sweet and quirky. I hope there’s a sequel because the Silver Springs world is so fun and addictive that I want to move in!
