Pearl Celeste Dreger was a late bloomer at the Hallowed Woods Academy. Her kind nature and insecurities made her the perfect fodder for taunting and bullying. Heading home for the Winter Solstice Celebration, she wants nothing more to be left alone, but, as fate would have it, she must help plan the big event and face the community who has spent years looking down at her for her unrealized magic. Will this be the year she takes life by the horns and show them all who she really is?

PEARL by Tabitha Barret is a coming of age story about a girl who must learn to find her inner strength not only for herself, but possibly to save the very people who look down on her.

As if it isn’t hard enough to be a teen, Pearl is crushing on a boy who breaks her heart, finds out another is in love with her, then add to that, the pressure of not coming into her magic, I couldn’t help but feel for Pearl. Then again, how often does a girl have a caster, a conjurer and a familiar all interested in the girl who had always been an outcast?

A heartwarming read where I couldn’t help but root for the heroine, magic or not! Tabitha Barret has done it again! Fabulous YA reading!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Tabitha Barret! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Overall, this was such a cute and well written story. This one was unlike the others I have read (I have read them in different orders. It was pretty unique. I did struggle a bit with the teenage angst. I am really picky when it comes to YA stories. However, the characters were very likable and I would definitely like to read this one again!

This was a great caster/ conjurer romance that I want more of! Celeste has come back home to Silver Springs for Winter Solstice. She’s an outcast and loner within her community since she still hasn’t came into her powers, she gets bullied, and can see a cat that no one else can which has led her to many therapy sessions. When she drinks a spiked pumpkin spiced latte, her world starts to get even crazier. One of her bullies confesses his love for her, her best friend leaves her heartbroken, and her imaginary cat isn’t what it seems.
I really liked watching Celeste change into the person that she wants to be. She had so much character growth in a short amount of time and it was amazing watching her go from silent and cowardly to this fierce young woman and standing up for herself and protecting her coven. Even though she couldn’t use her magic yet, she studied as much as she could and it payed off so well. I absolutely loved that she had fluffy llama pajamas and it was probably the best little thing ever! I wasn’t a big fan of Benjamin, her best guy friend, but I did like Carson, one of her bullies, and Noah, her cat. Sadie, her best girl friend, seems like an amazing character and I’m hoping to read her series soon to get to know her better and the incident at Hallowed Woods Academy that keeps getting mentioned. I hope we get to see more of Celeste, her guys, and coven in the future!

Did Not Finish
May 17, 2022
Did not finish at 45%, so bad that I'm leaving it unrated.

I couldn't do it, guys. This book was just so terrible. It was childishly written and the characters acted like they were a bunch of two year olds. None of the characters were likeable, especially not our protagonist, who was just whiny and had two small moments of bravery before being shoved aside and acting all miserable "woe is me."

Maybe I'm being too harsh, but my GOD. The content is bad, storyline is almost non-existent, and everything is jilted and doesn't flow correctly.

I didn’t really connect with the characters or the story, and found myself getting bored on and off. Not sure I’ll continue with the series

Another one breaking the series pattern. Its not a standalone, more of an introduction and ties in with Hallowed woods academy. The fmc is the youngest so far. I wanted to DNF this after the first chapter because pushy mothers and stiff stuffy covens isn’t my thing. The relationship with Benjamin was painful. As always PSL makes everything better and the story gets interesting. Still wasn’t too keen on Benji but I liked the other two and the way things went. Unsure if I would read a continuation.

Great book

This book was such a fun read I loved it. Celeste (pearl) kept going even when things seemed impossible. There were twists that I didn’t see coming. Love this shared World Series.

Pearl is an outcast, an enigma, among her family and the witching community. Her magic has yet to awaken, despite years of study and numerous tests and trials. She’s home for the holiday and her Mom, the perfect society woman, has volunteered her to help plan the Solstice Ball. Putting her in the middle of the kids who have bullied her entire life. Even the boy next door, her best friend and crush, seems to have moved on with a new girl.

But, can a spelled Pumpkin Spice Latte help Pearl find the courage to talk to her best friend and tell him just how she feels? What about the boy she thought was always mocking her? And just when did the cat she confided in turn into a cute shifter boy? Why does she suddenly feel the feels for them? Will they return her feels? And can they stop the dark goings-on in town before she has to return to school?

Can the girl with no magic pull it all off? Solve a mystery, keep her friends and family safe, and figure out if one girl really can have it all?

A wonderful young/new adult read and continuation of the Jewel’s Cafe series. We saw Pearl in Tabitha’s “Hollowed Woods Academy”, but seeing her at home in Silver Springs brings a new depth to this quirky and sassy young woman!

The nice thing about the Jewels Cafe books is that I don't really read the blurbs on the back anymore. It means that I have absolutely no idea what I'm getting myself into this time. It adds a little to the suspense and the surprise. The biggest surprise of this one? It was a YA, which meant that all the 155 pages were spent on plot (and teenage drama).

And surprisingly enough I quite enjoyed it all! It's very clear that there is a lot more story to discover in the main series, where I guess Celeste is a side character, but I personally had no trouble actually following what was happening. The world building was clear enough to understand the gist of it and to enjoy the plot and although I not always understood fully what certain terms meant, it didn't really bother me.

Mostly because the plot was quite gripping and interesting. Although this was a YA and there was quite some teenage drama, the teenage drama was not the center of the plot. There was a lot more going on and it didn't take long for that lot more to grab all the attention. I love how the plot was really built up slowly and how all pieces of the puzzle were clicking in the end. Not all twists were unexpected, but the one that wasn't was a nice and pleasant one.

Because personally I really like it when the relationships in a harem are based on a little more than just a drink. In this book it was very clear that the drink was only helping things along. It was not forcing them, it was not erasing everything that happened before, it was more of an opening for an honest conversation about everything that had happened and was going to happen. It was therefore easy to root for all of them and to like all of the guys.

I'm really excited to read the sequel and I will for sure also check out the other series where Sadie is the true star! The world is promising and interesting. So, I'm not done with it yet.

Clean, Sweet Romance

Likes:
No cursing
No graphic sex scenes
No vulgar euphemisms for genitalia
No false and crass illustrations of physiological arousal
No sexual dominance games or patronizing misogyny
Decent plot
Character development
Nice imagery
Sweet inclusive message
Happily ever after

Dislikes:
It would be nice to know more about Noah.

I wish more books in the Silver Springs universe were like this one.

Minus one star for lack of background on Noah and because there are at least 70 books in this universe and there is no way to differentiate between the sweet YA romances and the X rated soft-core porn descriptions with almost no plot, that exist to graphically illustrate fantasy sex which has no basis in the reality of how what the characters do (some of it is abusive) would actually affect a real sexual partner. I would prefer to know ahead of time what type of novel each story is so I could read the clean romance ones I would like and avoid the obscenity filled, sexually graphic, wish- fulfillment based soft-core porn soliloquies, including fake descriptions of what interactions lead to healthy and enjoyable sex.

Oh my stars! I love this book. This is a mystery, coming of age story, and a sweet love story for young adults, so it's light on the mushy love stuff. There's a fantastic plot with lots of action, some bullies, some soul-searching, and some surprises.

Pearl/Celeste has a pumpkin spice latte and since she's a witch, her magically delicious guys know that she is their mate. It takes a little while for her to understand what is going on, since she's a late bloomer, but when her guys reveal their feelings for her it's all kinds of sweet. I love how each guy has a different personality and relationship with Celeste. I thoroughly enjoyed how she goes from a girl with low self-esteem hiding in her books to a kick-ass heroine (the person she wants to be).

I am looking forward to reading the sequel and the Hallowed Woods Academy series.

Not fitting for the series

I definitely didnt like the sudden YA feel in the series. It felt like it put a wrench to a thoroughly enjoyable series! Every book has been a 10. Then this book felt like the 2nd in a series and I was missing FAR TOO MUCH. I almost stopped reading it, but trudged through.
The book alone was good and decent. However, I was burnt out on YA prior to reading, so my opinion is slightly skewed. I did enjoy the story and characters, but the teenage drama is just so much for me. The relationship with her parents and coven, the boy next door, etc. Just too much.

Pearl - Jewels Cafe book 8

Pearl, better known as Celeste, has returned home to Silver Springs for the annual Winter Solstice festival. Her mother immediately lets her know that she has volunteered her to be on the planning committee.

Celeste is so not looking forward to that at all. After a run in with a tormentor from her coven, she decides to visit Jewels Cafe. One pumpkin spice latte later & she is finding out that she has a couple of guys who like her. But she is still a late bloomer as far as her magic is concerned.

Worth the read

This was nice. Gives more of witchy, YA romance vibe. I liked Pearl/Celeste's character. She is a strong person, despite having some issues with herself she doesn't come off as a crybaby waiting on a miracle. On the other hand, she actually takes her chance and uses it to her advantage. She is clearly smarter than others. Although, her relationship with each of the boys is actually cute. But, I feel like something still lacks that it doesn't give that full-blown swooning effect. Otherwise, the book is definitely worthy of a reading.

I'm reading through the Jewel Cafe series and upon coming to this book I feel as though I should have read another book to explain all the backstories that are introduced in this book. It was a bit confusing to have the main character react to things and explain what had happened to her in a previous book, which wasn't part of this series. If you plan on reading this book, make sure to google the author's other works so that you can be up to-date with the current events of this book.

Magic delayed

For Pearl magic just doesn't seem like something she will ever be able to do herself. Delayed magic, is it like delayed gratification? Pumpkin Spice latte love spell or liquid courage to be honest with those you care about? Read Pearl by Tabitha Barret to find the answers to these questions and get a little more coven history about Silver Springs. I can't wait to read more about Pearl and her guys, Noah, Benjamin and Carson.

A sweet Solstice adventure!

Pearl was a refreshing change of pace from others in the Jewels Café series. For starters, it's YA. Initially I thought this would put me off, but the way the book handles the younger age of the cast is really well done. This book also has more of a politically-minded plot, with fighting covens as a center of the mystery. I'm looking forward to reading more from this particular cast, as the story is left open for an intriguing sequel.

YA RH

Couldnt put it down, if you are a newbie to the RH or a YA looking to see a pg rated style this is IT! The story line and characters were amazingly written. I would love to get more of a back story to Noah and definitely see where they all end up in society with more battles with Shadow Masters.

Far too much telling and not enough showing, which, coupled with the awkward dialogue, made this a very flat read. It’s not bad, but it’s not enjoyable either. Between the Sadie thing and all the rants about the school, I felt the author was far more interested in whatever side-series Pearl/Celeste will be starring in than this book. It made for a very, very poor first impression.

Cute story

This was the perfect mix of cute, sassy and mystery. Great world-building and I loved the characters.
This is a more slow-burn than many of the other books in the series, but the writing is just as good. I could not stop reading - I had to know what would if to Pearl/Celeste and her guys.

self is not something one finds, it is something one creates

Pearl (Celeste) is a late bloomer from The Hallowed Woods Academy. Her magic has not come to her and she is made fun of and ridiculed by her peers. She comes home for Winter Solstice and leads quite an adventure. This was a great story about Casters/Conjurers and the differences of the Covens and their beliefs.

Surprisingly sweet and romantic

I'm not much of a YA reader and typically this wouldn't be my speed but I really enjoyed this book. It was sweet and romantic with grit without being angsty. I am definitely rewarding the sequel to see how all these characters fair in the future. This was a surprise that I'm glad I took a chance on. Definitely recommend it.

Cute, sweet and quaint

This has a high school like academy feel. Slow burn. Cute, sweet and quaint as well. Pearl and every one in her coven think she's a late bloomer, or worse yet, non magic user.

This was a lovely and enjoyable story. A young adult becoming story.

Pearl/Celeste faces mean girls, ridicule and misunderstandings yet manages to find herself and become who she was meant to be. Definitely a series I'll be continuing.

Story was decent

The storyline was decent, but I am reminded of Anne of Green Gables when Anne’s friend asks her why she is using all that “highfalutin” language in her book. Totally applies here.

Really good

This felt like a modern day pride and prejudice in a Harry Potter village. I loved it. There was the period love drama and lots of magic without the sex that goes with reverse harem. Good stuff
