My name's Anna Fitzpatrick and I've been drawing since I can remember, making comics since the Beano cost 20p.
Born and raised in Ireland and now living in Peterborough, UK, I have an unyielding passion for telling weird, unique and lovingly crafted stories. Obsessed with worldbuilding and the characters that live within, I'm niche and I know it. I'd never be anything else.
I currently work full-time as a graphic designer, as well as many comic & illustration projects on the side.
Five stars for art, in places. One star for story, in places. A book half the size with more consistent story and level of artwork would be four or even five stars, but as it stands, there's often pages of drawn out story and sometimes poorly drawn content. So much to love about this book, but it is an example in why more is not always better.
The art is really amazing... But the story doesn't match. It was a bit confusing and it went all over the place. I had the feeling there was too much left unsaid and the main character was the opposite of likable. Jeez, I really couldn't get myself to like her and most of the times I didn't understand what she was doing.
The author should have marked the different languages in one way or another because some scene didn't make any sense. Which language do they speak? How could they understand each other?
All the evens happening in the country under dictatorship were left there with no explanations and they didn't help my comprehension of the story.
But the art is really good. Some pages are simply stunning. Too bad for the plot.
Art is beautiful, really amazing. And the book quality is top-notch. But the story itself... really don't know how to explain, but it dragged and was vague, confusing. I really could get into it or really care about what was going on.
But kept going until the end just because of the art... did I mentioned how fantastic it is?
