It seems that once one set of problems for Ridmark ends others seems to appear. Seems that the daughter of one of the realms enemies of the past has decided to take over where her father had failed. Seems that she doesn't want to learn from her fathers failures and thinks the she can become a god than what her father did and destroy Ridmark his family and friends as well. I'm looking forward to seeing how well that works out for her and whether or not she can be defeated. As Ridmark has another enemy for which hasn't forgiven him working behind the scenes. Not only that looks like a new land with possibly new allies and maybe enemies has has come about. Looking forward to seeing if Moeller can keep up his great story telling. in this 10 book series.

This is the second time I've picked up something labelled as book one of a series that has actually turned out to be book one of a subseries. Previously, it was book four of the overall series but this time, it was book twenty-eight. This is why books should be listed with their overall series in addition to their subseries. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

So, I got five chapters in and was more than a little lost, so I put it down. There was just too much stuff being referenced and too much worldbuilding that was clearly dependent on prior storylines to understand for me to read this as entry novel, which is understandable. I might revisit the series (obviously starting at the real book one) at some point, but probably not in the near future.

I am reminded of the wheel of time series. There is so much depth to the characters, the worlds, the plots/subplots, etc. I’ve found a series I can easily say I’m obsessed with. It’s well written. Some fantasy novels darn near feel like textbooks because they focus so hard on defining everything. That’s not the case here. And I was pleasantly surprised that my not having read the original series didn’t affect my understanding of anything here. I plan on immediately reading that series now, but only to better understand the layers of history and myth building etc. I think a ‘yuss’ will suffice now.

DNF at 20%. This is a placeholder rating. I wasn't aware that this book was the first book in a THIRD series featuring the same characters. Needless to say, there were allusions to a great many things that brought only confusion to me. I might eventually finish this book, but having to first read some 20+ other books in order to be able to do so with an understanding of what is going on is pretty daunting.

I want to start this off by saying that I was a bit upset after learning that even though the story summary lists this book as being the first book in the series, it did NOT mention that this is a "spin off" or a "continuation" of an already existing world/series. In fact, after realizing that there was way too much history being alluded to for this to be the beginning of a series and WAY too much already built of the world, I decided to figure out what was going on. Imagine my surprise when I found out that if you were to count all of the books that preceded this entry, that this is actually the 28th book in this series. Yeah, this was not a "good" surprise.

For whatever reason, I have this weird thing where I HAVE to start at the beginning of a series. If I were to buy a`book and then realize that it was book 4 in a series, I would put it down and go find book 1 and start from there. So, let's just say that finding out that I would have had to read 27 books to get to this one....yep, definitely not a good surprise.

Unfortunately, (or fortunately, I'm not sure) I didn't actually find this out until I was well into the book. I decided to just continue forward since ...well, 27 books.

As a stand alone, or I guess, the beginning of a new story arc, I was able to follow along well enough. The main characters - while not having a lot of time spent on developing them (because they were already well established) - were easy enough to figure out. Where things got confusing for me was when the story arc introduces the "other" world. Apparently, there is history there as well.

The fact that I was listening versus reading also made it a bit more difficult. I have found that - especially in the fantasy genre - that it is sometimes easier to actually "read" the beginning sections where the world building is taking place since for some reason, it is easier for me to envision things in my head if I am reading a print version while things are being built (I know, I know...its just my weird thing). So, the fact that I was listening did cause some confusion on my part trying to keep everyone and everything straight in my head.

I bought the package audio version that contains both books one and two so now my dilemma is whether or not I want to continue forward with the second book or if I want to tackle the actual beginning of the series. Apparently there has been quite a bit of action preceding this book (I think that might be a huge understatement)

I did like the world that has been created. I really do not understand the magic system in place and am not too clear where the main characters Ridmark and his wife fit into the scheme of things. It feels like I just stepped into the middle of a story so I'm sure there are a ton of nuances that I'm missing.

So -now the choice is clear.....keep moving forward, or go back....????

Not sure yet.

While this book started slowly, it's a new series, and so, a lot of the front matter dealt with what had changed in the intervening two years since the previous series ended, and I will admit, I was a little bored. However, the action soon kicked into high gear, and I was hooked, yet again. The plot twists kept me guessing, mostly -- a few of them were so utterly obvious as to make me roll my eyes a little. The climax exploded onto the scene, and I couldn't put it down. There was very little in the way of resolution, so I'm going to have read the next in the series very soon.

Confusing

Stating the obvious throughout, and every battle and individual combat follows the same tedious pattern.
However the greatest mystery is now Count Roland and his exclusively male army managed to propagate the Malison world with no women being drawn through the portal.

Sometimes a little repetitive, but I sort of appreciate it. Re-explaining things, characters at the halfway point, especially if those parts haven't been involved in a moment, really helps keep track of the many things going on. It also could be done in a better way.

11. Oh dear. This is not the first in the series so I was totally at sea. All my fault for not checking but I thought Book 1 was actually that. I read bravely on but had no idea what was going on and had to give up. I liked the synopsis though so perhaps I will try again on a different day.

I liked the merging of the two kingdoms - Andomhaim and the Empire by way of a magic portal.

Aeliana is the bastard daughter of Tarrabus Carhaine. Although not addressed in the Frostborn series, she apparently spent a considerable amount of time from age four with him. She blames Ridmark for his death and also believes that Carhaine should have been made the High King. I dug out my copy of Frostborn: The Shadow Prison and confirmed my recollection that Carhaine was actually dragged into the Incariel void by Imaria. She is also the one who released him from prison. He would still be alive had she not done so. Ridmark had also attempted to keep Carhaine from falling into the void. But of course, as with most zealots, reality has no bearing on her beliefs.

I do question that the Warden allowed her access to Urd Morlemoch and that he actually granted het request for power. Up to that point she had no magic, although she was trained as an assassin. I'm sure there were many other more viable allies he could have chosen. Just because they both hated Ridmark and wanted him dead does not seem a strong enough motive for him to grant her guidance.

The commoners of Ebor had been driven from their land by the nobility who wanted to raise sheep for more profit than what crops would yield. This scenario seemed familiar and I realized it was almost identical to an occurrence in one of the Ghost books. Only an observance, not a complaint. I do like the new character named Niall and hope that he will be included in future volumes.

I don't know why but this book just didn't seem to enthrall me as much as some of the others have, thus the four star rating.

Good

I was excited to see Ridmark and Tyrcamber come together in this story. I think it’s cool how Jonathan Moeller links the worlds in his stories together through a shared history. Hopefully the next book will come out soon.

Book 1 Knights

I enjoyed this book for a new series with ridmark and the others. The book had errors throughout and was a fun read. The book felt rushed in places and there where times i wasn't sure what was going on. The plot was still fun to read and I look forward to beek 2.
