Legion Rising: Surviving Combat and the Scars It Left Behind

Rate this book
Not everyone has pulled shards of another man's skull from the palm of their hand. Not everyone has stood over the bodies of friends whose lives were lost in an instant. Not everyone has struggled to face their own reflection for years on end. But anyone who has experienced trauma or adversity will resonate with Legion Rising, the unflinchingly honest account of an army officer's journey through combat in the Iraq War and rising beyond the scars that trauma leaves behind.

Experience an honest, unedited, and occasionally humorous glimpse of the rigors of military training through Jeff’s eyes. Follow Jeff through up-close, fast-paced accounts of the thrills and dangers of combat as a Platoon Leader in Iraq. Feel the weight of the gruesome and tragic loss of eight men whose lives were lost in the line of duty. Journey with Jeff through his battle to face the scars and shadows that followed him long after his time serving in the military was over.

Through Jeff's authentic voice and brave transparency, readers will be drawn into his story and find themselves able to relate to his struggle and ultimate rise from adversity.

This is not simply a military memoir, it’s a memoir of life -- of tragedy, healing, and leadership. Through the heart-pounding stories of combat to the transparent and personal look into the process of healing, a message emerges - one that will inspire people across all walks of life.

This is an incredible read if you want to learn about the journey Jeff Morris took in serving his country. Not all of it is an easy read, as he was deployed to Iraq more than once as an officer and there were losses that were difficult. But it’s well written and I was interested in his time over there, along with the after effects on a person, and learned quite a lot from reading this. I recommend it for anyone who likes military biographies. Advance electronic review copy was provided by NetGalley, authors Jeff Morris with LC Mickler, and the publisher.

Legion Rising:Surviving Combat and The Scars It Left Behind

by Jeff Morris

2019

WildBlue Press

Jeff Morris grew up inspired by his mothers work ethic: never give up. It was an ethic that got him through unimaginable horrors, and helped him remain centered and on track at key points in his life. Jeff had a dream of going to law school and working with the FBI, until the idea of becoming a Navy SEAL consumed him.It was not to be, his mothers words helping him carry on. He went on to join the Army, was deployed to Kuwait, then sent to Iraq as an Infantry Platoon Leader, to patrol the violence on Haifa Street. He quickly rose in rank, but the horrors he saw and the soldiers he fought beside, would never leave his mind.

His personal relationships suffered. His marriage to his first wife, Chrissy, was long-distance and difficult. They had one son, Cole, but could never make he relationship work. He fell into a dark depression after leaving his wife and son.

Courageous and incredible, this book is very well written. Jeffs life, losses, despair and bravery are told with honesty. Parts were difficult to read.

Jeff now works to help other veterans and people overcome their hardship and pain by starting a CrossFit program. He and a friend call it Legion 8. Truly admirable.

REVIEW OF THE AUDIBLE AUDIO VERSION

Overall: 5/5
Thought-provoking, awe-inspiring, life-changing... you get the idea. Definitely money well spent.

Cover 5/5
When I saw this image, I knew I was in for quite the ride, and it did not disappoint. It screams Hero, but also Human. Here, what you see is what you get, and then some.

Writing/Delivery: 10/10
A well-organized series of events, bringing us from Harris' school years to the present day, with the faults, the struggles, the leadership, the good decisions and the bad ones, and the extraordinary impact he's had in the lives he's touched, and the brave face he's had to wear for others' sakes.

Though it has little to nothing to do with the merits of the book itself, I want to tell Jeff Morris that I very much appreciate his service to our country and his part in making the world a better place.

Audio/Performance: 10/10
Perfect diction and rhythm and crystal clear sound. No complaints here.

Quotes:
"Life had become almost... transactional; black or white, yes or no, in or out. There was no more gray in my mind."

I can only hope to understand the depths of our military's sacrifice but this telling is an exceptional gift to help educate those of us who have never know the hardships of war thanks to their service. Compelling and blisteringly honest. Prepare to have a deeper respect for those who serve in our military. In an honorable sharing of his humanity, Jeff Morris reveals his example of how to rise from the pain to turn what was once senseless into beautiful purpose. I found his journey to "awaken" and integrate his experiences as he rejoins life to be inspiring for anyone who has experienced loss that makes little or no sense.

Our Heros

The men and women in our military are truly Heroes with all they sacrifice. This story identifies that. It also identifies that many of us suffer from heartache, trauma, PTSD, loneliness, feeling lost...we can all rise above and the author certainly made choices to do that. Not only does he heal the wounds he hides, but unknowingly healed the wounds of others. An inspiring book that will force you to appreciate what you have.

I don’t usually write reviews for books, but this book moved me. It was raw, inspiring, heartfelt and jaw dropping. I smiled, I cried and I felt in touch with Jeff’s struggles and trauma. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to read about a true hero. Thank you Jeff for telling your story. It meant a lot to me and I am sure it will mean a lot to many others that read it too.

Gives the harsh reality of war, without the sensoring which is often given in a lot of books. It shows how people come together in dark times.

Quick read, but memorable. A better understanding of our soldiers and how they deal with war.

A blunt and honest story of one man's experiences in The Iraq War. Very enlightening, and both tragic and heroic. Jeff is a good man and a great leader.

Jeff and LC walk us through Jeff’s amazing story of inspiration. Beginning with a youthful eagerness to serve through his entrance into military service, Jeff is a born leader, athletic, in love, and becomes the ‘All-American’ man. Combat takes its toll in violence, death, and the dark recesses of humanity. Jeff becomes callous, unfeeling, and retracts from his family and friends. Returning to civilian life, he struggles with the lasting effects of what he has seen and done. With inspiration and help from unlikely sources, Jeff is able to accept that he needs help and eventually rises above, using his experiences to help others from all walks of life.

This story is not only for those who have seen combat. This is a must-read for every one of us who has not been able to face the mirror for ANY reason. Emotional walls and insecurity attack us all, and this is a rousing reminder we need others to survive. From accepting help and love to eventually being able to give help and love, we can all grow and thrive with the lessons from LC and Jeff in ‘Legion Rising’.

Finished this one last night. This was a great read.

A true story about a man named Jeff Morris. It starts with him as a young adult wanting to become a SEAL. It goes on through his enlistment in the military, what happened in Iraq, and the aftermath when he came home.

This was not a sugarcoated story. Jeff was brutally honest about things that happened to him and his men. I teared up several times and even cried once. That never happens.

This is a heartbreaking story but also one of triumph.

The book was hard to put down. I listened to it over two days.

Raw honestly at it's core

I come from a military family and have brother's that have seen/been through boots on the ground combat... neither have ever spoken about it. After reading this I "get it"!! Highly recommend it to anyone who is/has been in the military as well as their family members.
