~ First Hunt ~

What happens when you fall for the creature you were taught to hunt?

Violet

I was raised as a hunter - trained to kill all of the monsters that go bump in the night. I left that life behind, vowing to never kill unless necessary. Unfortunately, necessary happened pretty quickly. With blood on my hands and no place to go, I rely on the help of a sexy rancher. Turns out he’s a wolf shifter and I’m falling hard. FML.

Jackson

When I inherited the family ranch, my whole life went to hell. Then, I met Violet. She’s strong, sexy, and just feisty enough to put up with someone like me. Basically, she’s everything I ever wanted in a woman. The only problem is that she’s a hunter and I’m a shifter.

Can Violet and Jackson fight their pasts to let love win?

Alexis Calder writes sassy heroines and sexy heroes with a sprinkle of sarcasm. She lives in the Rockies and drinks far too much coffee and just the right amount of wine.

Misleading blurb leads to disappointing novella..

This novella was not what I was expecting at all. I feel the blurb is misleading in that the two MCs go from "oh you're not a human, you're actually a shifter/hunter" to "you're my mate and I claim you" in 0.63 seconds. There was no buildup to the relationship and I didn't feel any chemistry between them, plus there was a RH moment that I didn't appreciate. Overall, a meh shifter read with no forbidden romance angst.

The Wolf and his Hunter

Violet was raised to be a paranormal hunter. Her first mission she chooses not to hunt and find a new life. Her boyfriend in tow. 6 months later, her boyfriend left her and returned to the hunger compound leaving her penniless.
Jackson is a wolf shifter, who grew up on a ranch outside Diablo Falls. He didn't want to be a rancher so he took off for the big city. He is home again with his two brothers trying to get the ranch ready to sell when he sees Violet sitting on a rock and offers her a ride.
Violet and Jackson have a connection. A job on the ranch is to good to pass up. A fun in with a demon and Jackson in trouble has Violet blowing her cover.
A fast paced and a little steamy short story. Nice epilogue. Hoping Jordan, Make and cousin Cori get a story.

Opposites attract

Violet was raised as a hunter. But that's not the life she wanted so she left. Jackson is a shifter. She was told he was her enemy but then why is she so drawn to him. This opposites attract story is romantic and sexy on its way to HEA. The heart wants what the heart wants.

I feel that I should explain why I gave this book 2 stars. I went into it expecting a short story with some good steamy scenes, with two characters who might be as likely to kiss as they were to fight each other with sassy comebacks and everything. That's what the description sold me.

It delivered on one aspect. It was a short story. And thank God for that because I don't think I could have taken much more.

This book is a novella length introducing readers to Diablo Falls, a group on books written by different authors revolving around this area of supernaturals. For me, this book doesn’t set up this series well, there is a mix-up between alpacas and llamas (yes, there is a big difference), and Violet seemingly knowing a waitress’s name even though she had no name tag, and being a hunter, she seemed completely off her game and not being able to identify a single supernatural at a restaurant full of them.

The story had potential, but it was too short for any real revelations, or a real plot that you can really sink your teeth into. I really didn’t feel the main characters at all, even though they were likeable enough, I didn’t have the time to really connect to them.
