Loki’s Gambit
This series of books are really well worth reading and rereading. I gave a brief review of each story and I highly recommend that you read them in order or you will miss a lot of things. They build on each other as the characters develop more with each story. But you can put them down as they all have an ending if you wish to stop, but I doubt that you will.
Wolves
Even if you do not know a lot about Norse Mythology, you will be able to relate to the mythology parts of the story. I often felt like Amy when Loki talked about Norse gods.
From the moment, I started reading I was captured by the storyline. Often you get a book because it sounds good in the write up or review and you just cannot get into it. Not this book, from page 1, I was totally enthralled and wanting to know what is going to happen next. I really enjoyed how the author developed the relationship between Loki and Amy. Beatrice was a very nice touch to the story, she kept the plot alive and filled in a lot of the gaps for both Amy and the reader, very nice touch.
Monsters
The continuation of the Amy and Loki story is full of adventure and suspense. You are not sure if you like Loki or not and there are times, it is both. I found myself wanting to know what is going to happen next and the author does a great job of keeping the reader engaged. I found myself routing for Loki to be the good guy, especially for Amy. But the author keeps you in the dark, there is so much mystery around Loki even with the glimpses of his life, you are still left wondering.
The characters are well developed and I found myself disliking Jameson and wondering if there is more to him than meets the eye. He is just too obsessed with capturing Loki. Who is the mysterious Big Boss, Prometheus, and what connection does he have with Loki? What does Amy have to do with Loki’s higher purpose and what does Steve have to do with Odin’s higher purpose? Also, Beatrice seems to know something but exactly what that is remains a mystery. Especially now that she has slipped into what appears to be dementia. Who and exactly what is Cera is another huge mystery that keeps the readers wondering if she good or evil.
Chaos
Wow, is all I can say. I started this book wanting to know what is going to happen next to Amy and Loki because Part II hooked me. The ending was amazing and I was really taken by surprise by how this part ended. What is nice is that if one wants to stop reading this series, you could stop here.
The characters of Amy and Loki are so well developed that they felt like real people. The fact that they are not permitted to have more than a fleeting taste of happiness saddens me. I am hoping that this will change in the upcoming books. I liked Beatrice and Steve because they added that much needed sanity to the insanity that always travels with chaos. This book was named correctly, because there certainly was a lot of chaos throughout the story.
In The Balance
This story will give you more insight into Amy's mind and her strengths. Also, you see the different personalities of Loki and what makes him Loki. The Author says in the beginning that this novella is a story that needed to be written and I totally agree. It really shows more of Amy and Loki’s relationship and it showed how Amy copes with their relationship. I am very glad it was written because it certainly filled in some blanks in my head. One of the best lines was at almost the end when Amy comes to the realization of where she is and who she is dealing with (sorry to be more specific would entail a spoiler and I don’t want to do that). What I really liked was there were hints about things to come, nothing obvious but very subtle hints if you are paying attention.
Fates
This book moves so fast and the adventures that Amy and Bodhi are having and they are doing them together. I really like seeing them work together but I could not believe how many situations that they end up in throughout the story. But I really enjoyed seeing how they were able to resolve each and every one of them. What is a very nice play from the author is the way Bodhi and Amy are both almost touching on the truth but it seems to slip away at the last minute. This keeps the story very interesting. The many other universes that co-exist at the same time concept has always intrigued me.
I really like the character of Amy, she is so smart, strong, and resourceful but still so unsure of herself. She has no clue that she is a beautiful person. Her personality keeps me drawn to her in a way that I find myself cheering for her and hoping that she finds that love she wants. Bodhi has a similar insecurity streak and that is what makes him very charming. But I am probably as frustrated as they are and those dangling endings are almost as bad as a cliffhanger. I hope the next book comes out soon. I really want to know if Loki is going to be found and when or if he is found, what is his fate.
The Slip
This side story is special because you get to meet one of Loki’s children, Sleipnir, an eight-legged horse. And the story is from his point of view. Sleipnir has been under the spell of a magic bridle thus he is just a common horse and not the intelligent being he truly is. I love how his story unfolds and it fits into the I Bring the Fire series perfectly.
Warriors
I just finished this part of the series and it is certainly named correctly. There is a lot of battles going on mostly physical but some internal and emotional. This book of the series is setting up the reader for what will happen next. There were a lot of questions coming into this part and now there are so many more. There are only hints of what will happen to Amy, Bodhi and Steve, as well as, the supporting cast of characters.
Ragnarok
The entire “I Bring Fire Series” is a true classic ending with Ragnarok. This book from the series pulls together all of the pieces of a great story merging the classic myths with urban fantasy. It is crafted in a way that keeps you reading and even going back to re-read the series.
The trinity has always been an important part of mythology and religion. It is found everywhere and changes with the times. New religions took trinities from paganism and changed it to fit their view. Ms. Grockel is doing exactly the same thing in this series and you find out exactly who the new trinity is in Ragnarok. Even though you think you know, what you don’t know is how they changed in the new worldview.
Bodhi and Amy are trying to find their way in the craziest situations. I love how they discover who they are and how they will continue in their new world. I enjoy the humor that is embedded in the story, especially from Bodhi. He has a rare gift of saying things that often makes you laugh or at the very least, smile.
Ragnarok answers the questions set out in the previous books and the answers are not what you thought or expected. You see how loyalty, friendship, love, truth, and family all come together. Even though this part does have a suitable ending, there is still a lot of stories that can be told.
The Fire Bringers
This story takes place in the future and I love what the author did with it. The neat twist on evolution was very creative. Bodhi, Amy and Steve are now in the far future so you find out some of what they have been up to in the 300 some years since that they became the new trinity. It answers some of the questions you might have thought of when you finished Ragnarok.
Someday My Count Will Come
I loved the story which flowed very nicely. Dare is very interesting and I like that he comes off as a weak Elf and can hide that so well. The meeting with Loki was interesting, love the fact that there is a tie in to "I Bring The Fire" series. Of course, if one had not read that series, they probably wouldn't even give that a thought.
It is interesting that Dare has such a human quality about him even though he is a Dark Elf. Penny is awesome and she really adds a lot to the story. She is so strong and yet her strength is overlooked. I really enjoy the character of Dare, he is complex and makes stories about him so much more than just a vampire story.
