Midnight Fae Academy #1

Midnight Fae Academy: Book One

Rate this book
Welcome to Midnight Fae Academy.
Home of the Dark Arts.
Vampires.
And cruelly handsome fae.

A forbidden bite led to my capture and recruitment.
There are no flowers here.
No life.
Only death.

I'm an Earth Fae who doesn't belong here.
They can play their little mind games all they want, but I'm going to find a way back to my elemental world. Even if it kills me.

Except Headmaster Zephyrus is one step ahead of my every move.
Prince Kolstov won't stop cornering me.
And Shadow--the reason I'm in this damn mess to begin with--haunts my dreams.

My affinity for the earth is dying and being replaced by something more sinister. Something powerful. Something deadly.

The Midnight Fae believe this is my fate.
They claim that I was "recruited" for a purpose.
To battle a rising presence.
Or to die trying.

I don't owe them a damn thing. But if I have to pass their trials to find my way home, then so be it. I survived a plague and far worse in the Elemental Fae realm. An ominous energy? Please. What a joke.

Give it your best shot.
I'm waiting.
And don't you dare bite me.
Or I'll make you regret it.

Author Note: This is a dark paranormal reverse harem romance, and despite Aflora's opinions on the matter, there will definitely be biting. Shadow, aka Shade, guarantees it.

It wasn't ...kinda bad?

Spoilers below

The book starts up with the heroine being bitten against her will, this is akin to rape because being bitten by this person is an abomination and she can be killed for that, even though she wasn't interested. While her mind was screaming and rebelling against this bite, her body was getting lax and hot.

Her rapist then takes her to the council that is in charge, these people are the ones that decide the "abominations" to be killed. They convene and decide that she should be monitored and if there is anything hinky due to the possible power transference from the bite, then she should be killed expeditiously.

The prince is put in charge of her while her rapist is given the explicit instruction to stay away from her. The prince also wants to have sex with her, but she is an abomination and as on. Another guy is also called in to help watch over her, he also lusts over her.

Her rapist disregards the edict and comes to her in her dreams where he has sex with her over and over as she vows to give him a beat down for ruining her life while climaxing from the amount of pleasure shes experiencing.

Honestly there is nothing to see in this book. Nothing happens for the longest time, the academy is useless because they don't do anything , they went to class only twice in the entire book.

I also did not like the way they all called her an abomination, she even called herself that! She didn't do anything, Shade was the one that did it, no one called him an abomination, he was free to go around do whatever he does while Aflora had to hear those words. Not for that at all. I also didn't like the way she was so forgiving to Shade after what he put her through, I don't care if there is a prophesy that had to be fulfilled, the way the author chose to pair them up was distateful, the plot would have been the same if Aflora had met Shade at a club, taken him home and then bitten in the midst of pleasure by mistake, which then jumpstarts what ever prophesy that was set to happen. That, I might have been able to stomach that, but the disregard at which she was treated even by Zeph and the familiar issue, I didn't like.

Even the MM interaction couldn't save this for me.

So. Every now and again I take a wild chance on a bully RH.

I did not win the lottery this time lmfao

Not a fan of the "being attracted to your rapist/ sexual abusers" trope.

I get it's a fantasy, but I can't wrap my head around it. It just angers me.

that kind of shit makes me so angry it leaves me literally physically ill.

I'll take a pass.

If I fail my exams tomorrow blame this book, if I pass them...it'll also be this book's fault in some weird indirect way. Instead of using my time to study more, I decided to finish this instead. Was it worth it?

WELL...YES??!! Honestly, this just got better and better as it went on and I so badly want to give it five stars for sheer enjoyment, BUT (yes, there's a but), I can't. Let me explain why.

Firstly, the good stuff.

I listened to the audiobook, unaware that there were more than two narrators. That was the best surprise ever because all of them are amazing. And, one sounds like Teal'c from Stargate which will forever be engraved in my mind.

The world building is really good, unique, and it makes me want to check out all the related series after I finish this one. There's so much to explore.

Although, the Academy itself needs a bit more work. It's there, it exists, but we don't know much about it except the very few classes Aflora went to. You'd think if she was forced to go to the Academy then she'd, you know, actually attend some classes.

I really love the characters, all of them.

In some of the past RH books I've read, the mates were nothing special, more like a carbon copy of one another. But here? All three are unique and I adore them.

We also have interesting M/M scenes which I also wasn't expecting.

And now, the reason why I had to take off a star. It's the one thing that started it all, the infamous bite.

At first I got annoyed with Aflora for mentioning the bite in every single scene that she had with Shade when she clearly felt the opposite towards him. But then it registered that each time she did, she said it was without her consent, which it was. And since in this world, a bite is equivalent to assault...yeah.

Other than that, this was a near perfect read. I might check out the prequel before continuing with book two, so I have a better idea of who Ella is.

So adored this first instalment in the midnight fae academy it was bloody fantastic and I read it in one sitting.
So if you have read the Elemental fae academy trilogy you will remember Aflora the earth fae heir, if not no matter as it doesn't need to be read as this is a standalone series just occupying the same world.
So Aflora while in the human world is bitten by Shade a midnight death fae initiating an illegal mating bond.
she is transported to the midnight fae academy for judgement and observation.
As she is the Earth Fae heir they cant terminate her so they decide to educate her at the academy while keeping an eye on her and temporarily binding her powers.
Shes handed over to her begrudging babysitters Prince Kolstov (Kols) an elite fae and the future king and Zephyrus a guardian fae and a headmaster (professor) at the academy.
Shade for me is the man or fae as the term may be, he really is quite the comedian and has the added bonus of being sexy as all hell and protective to boot, he really doesn't give a monkey what others think of him a quality I liked a lot and at the moment he has my first place marker and is way out front in terms of brownie points.
Kols is growing on me slightly (even though I did want to slap him so many times in this).
He can be rather arrogant and self-important but I do think he is evolving add in Zeph who as well as being all hard edges, cool logic and heat also has a tongue that can cut deep and a stone-cold outer persona that Aflora is melting one drip at a time.
I also loved the chemistry between Kol's and Zeph those two are smokin and that was the icing here with this for me those two are way intense.
This is slow-burn reverse-harem but still with plenty of chemistry and red hot heat.
There's a lot of fighting the initial attraction here especially with Zeph,
Kols is also trying but isn't quite as successful as his fellow babysitter.
Shade doesn't give a hoot and embraces the whole mate thing.
Loved where this went and also that finale was fantastic.
Really looking forward to the next instalment with this it was excellent from start to finish.
A fantastic start to this series.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Midnight Fae Academy: Book One (Midnight Fae Academy #1).

Midnight Fae Academy was everything I hoped for and more! Lexi C. Foss performed magic on this story and I was soooo there for it! Her world building and flawless writing hooks you from the start and then lures you into a dark yet beautifully imagined world where you never want to leave! I easily fell for Shade, Kols, and Zeph just as the heroine did. I'm dying for more! - Five WHY CHOOSE stars!

Wow, this book will grab you by the throat, push you up against the wall and seriously f**c with your mind. And you'll enjoy every moment of it.

This felt almost like a bully romance at first, poor Aflora was treated so badly by both Shade and Kols. I totally and utterly wanted to throat punch them both. But then we start seeing another side to each guy and they rather grew on me and along with Zeph they make great partners for Aflora.

There are so many mysteries swirled together and just as one strand unravels, and we learn something new, another puzzle pops up to take its place. I was utterly captivated and completed the story in one sitting. Just couldn't put it down, desperate to read the next page and find out what would befall our beleaguered heroine next.

Aflora is a very gentle and kind soul, but that isn't to be mistaken for weakness. She's thrown totally into the deep end of life at the Midnight Fae Academy without even a kiddy arm band to stop her drowning. This is a culture that clearly believes in being cruel to be kind, or perhaps they're just arrogant, thoughtless dicks. I'm still not sure if I like Shade, if I bumped into him in the street I might just poke him in the eye on Aflora's behalf. Kols and Zeph grew on me, sometimes like a bad spot that you wanted to lance, but grow they did.

I only hope that Lexi C Foss is busy writing because I really, really need to read book 2. Like read-it-yesterday need to read it.

Okay that’s it. This author is officially not for me. She cannot for the life of her write likable characters. How is it even possible to write male leads that could literallly be picked out of a comment section from 🌽hub. The constant objectification and sexualization of the fmc by the mmcs? The way she had no agency? The rape apologia and romanticization?? Oh we’re never going to make it out of the patriarchy I fear. It’s time for rh authors to put the keyboards away and pick up some literature on internalized misogyny because this is not it…

Great start

This book centers around Aflora and her introduction to the court of the Midnight Fae. Midnight fae are pretty much vampires as they feed on blood, but they don't like to be called vampires or bloodsuckers.

The story starts out when Shade bites her while on the human realm against her will. He has been told to do it but never explains why. He is her mate and they have some crazy instalust happening despite her claims he basically raped her with his fangs. He also sexes her up in her dreams often, but as much as she claims she hates him, she is drawn to him and blames it on the bond.

She gets brought to the Midnight Fae Academy and forced to go to school there since she's been bitten. There's some old bad blood between Shade's father and the King which amounts to an age old power struggle over the source of magoc.

The King's son, Kols, goes to the academy too. Aflora lives in the royal suite with him and his brother, and Kols' previous guardian now headmaster who is now a teacher at the academy, Zeph. Zeph and Kols have some chemistry and attraction to each other, but they also like to share women, which went bad for them resulting in Zeph's demotion from guardian to teacher.

Aflora's power keeps growing as a result I guess of her bond with Shade, but because elementals and midnights aren't supposed to mix, she's monitored closely. She's considered an abomination. Abominations are supposed to be evil, but Aflora isn't... leading them to believe they may have been misled about historical facts.

Okay, so that's the summary.

Now spoilers (so I can remember what happened and have a refresher for when the next book is out).

Aflora ends up sleeping with Kols and binding him as an elemental mate. He freaks out and tells her to GTFO, so she does. Then the new power level overloads her and she starts burning up. To prevent her from detonating again, catastrophically this time, the three guys all bond to her.

Then Shade takes her to his place, Zeph has some wristlet made to hide their bond, and Shade hints that he has to be the bad guy but that he adores her and that she will forgive him eventually once she understands. He doesn't bother explaining though.

The next morning, Shade is gone. Zeph shows up and collars her and she's thrown into the dungeon. Kols is smug, and she feels betrayed, silently vowing to take them all down with her.

The end. Effing cliffhanger... probably will read the next one though, hence the spoilers so I can remember lol.

In retrospect, I really shouldn’t have read this book. Not because I hated it, but because I am so freaking desperate for the next instalment that had I the option to find a way to sneak inside this author’s head, I absolutely would. I wouldn’t think twice about doing whatever it took either.

Alas, I have to wait, [insert reluctant and gritting teeth face] PATIENTLY. Patience and me, not a term I find myself associating with. However, I begrudgingly will. For I have no doubt that the next instalment with again blow my mind, just as this book did.

How does a person’s mind create such brilliance? This is the question I’m left pondering. I awe at every page turned, at every chapter I read and at every scene that is built in my head. I fell, no i bloody dived into each page willingly.

The characters; Aflora, Shade, Kols and Zeph. Chemistry overload. This author did not hold back. Her reverse harem genre is amazing. Believable.
All these characters played off of one another. It was exciting to watch it unfold.

I’ll leave with this.

I can tell you exactly how reading this book left me feeling.

This series is set in the same universe as The Elemental Fae Academy series, and one of the minor characters in that series is the main female protagonist in this series. I like the idea of the Midnight Fae and how their society is structured. The different types of Midnight Fae are quite creative. Unfortunately I didn't much like any of the males--okay maybe Zef a bit, but not the others. I can tell this series has promise, but this book was just a bit lack lustre and rambled on a bit. There was also way too much mind sex instead of actual sex.

Wow, what a great start to this series!

This book just grabbed my heart, and attention, and never let go. Aflora is an earth elemental fae. A royal one. The last of her line. She is bitten, while in the earth realm, by a midnight fae. There will be dire consequences for both of them. She is cut off from her elemental powers and shuttled off to the Midnight Fae Academy, where she needs to learn how to use the dark magic that is new to her . . . A result of the initial bond bite she received. But why does she feel such a strong pull to two other fae? They are supposed to help her, but in fighting their own attraction to her, it comes across as hating her.

You won’t need a box of kleenex to get through this book, but that doesn’t mean the authors won’t play with your emotions. And it doesn’t mean that you won’t feel Aflora’s abject misery and sadness at times. Because you will. But it will just make you appreciate all the sweet and sexy times that are interspersed in the story. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, which I always love. Just when I think I can’t hate a character more, we are provided a glimpse into their thoughts and feelings which melts my heart just a tad and twists my gut, so I find myself on a rollercoaster of emotions.

World building is everything here. The information about the various fae factions and politics is fascinating. And it’s portrayed pretty organically so you don’t feel like you’re sitting in a classroom with a “Midnight Fae 101” syllabus. The characters are so richly drawn that I find myself attracted to all of them, even when I’m hating them. The smoldering standout here, for me, is Zephyrus. He is from the warrior blood faction and is guardian to prince of the Midnight Fae realm, Kols. He’s all dark and sexy energy and for some reason, I found him so hot. Definitely read the bonus scene the author offers when you sign up for her newsletter (link in the final pages of the book) it’s definitely worth it.

Let’s not forget what an amazing FMC Aflora is. She is no shrinking violet, but is pragmatic about the circumstances in which she finds herself. She definitely has a POV and opinions on things, and isn’t afraid to state them. She also knows when to keep her thoughts to herself. She has such a strength and dignity and she has become one of my favorites.

I highly recommend the series, do start out with the prequel. It’s the story of Kols twin brother, Tray, and his story of finding his own mate, Ella. There is some information in there about fae politics and the various factions, and will make reading book 1 a richer experience. This book does end on a cliffhanger.

UPDATE: Second time reading this book. Last year when I initially read this book, I didn’t know it was a sequel series to the Elemental Fae Academy series. I have only now read that series. While I wasn’t lost during my initial read of the Midnight Fae Academy series, now that I have read the Elemental Fae Academy so many things in this book made more sense. Which is what prompted me to reread this series. It is still a great read, love the group of main characters but some things in the plot make more sense to me now. Also, since I’ve read the other series, I have a better frame of reference when characters from that series are mentioned here.

I still recommend this series, but I wanted to add this edit that I would highly recommend that you read the Elemental Fae Academy series first.

DNF @ 7%

Usually a non-con situation would not outright bother me but the fact that this one occurred in the first few pages of the book really threw me for a loop.

The MC is bitten by a midnight fae without consent and against her will (which initiates a mating bond); meanwhile, her thought processes throughout this encounter are simultaneously angry because she doesn’t want it to happen, and turned on by his actions.
She has no idea who this guy is and he literally comes out of no where and “assaults” her.
It honestly just left a bad taste in my mouth and I have no real interest to continue because of that poor execution.

From the moment that I started to read this book I was hooked on it. It moves along at an amazing pace . The characters are so real that you feel as though you know them personally and you want to be there with them. You feel a connection to each of them and cannot help but fall in love with each of them no matter what they do. The story is amazing and will keep you guessing at every turn. You will not be able to put it down and when you get to the end you will have a WTF moment. This is a must read, no doubt about it and I look forward to reading what happens next in book 2.

No.

Main character kidnapped and magically "raped". I read through to the end, but none of the characters in this book had any redeeming qualities. She was just supposed to fall for all of them even as they threatened her life. No. Just no.

I needed this series, after becoming completely addicted to Elemental Fae Academy: The Complete Trilogy and apparently landing in a never-ending book hangover. We did meet Aflora in the EFA trilogy and there are more tie-ins throughout, so you may want to read this first. (Cover & link to book 1 are below).

The writing is impressive, and the world is one I wouldn’t mind visiting; though it’s a bit dark at times, it’s more intriguing. Aflora is a brilliantly designed character who I instantly loved and continuity from meeting her in her own world, that of the elemental fae is on point.

Also: even though I basically did accurately guess how this book turned out, there was a little twist I hadn’t expected. I’m always super impressed by any little detail that I don’t manage to predict because it’s super rate.

Character development and the interpersonal relations are highly advanced. I got really into the various connections and enjoyed some really sweet moments between, not just Aflora and the respective men, but the men themselves. Brilliant writing.

Ends on a cliffhanger, but book 2 is out now, so no worries.

Note:
I both read the ebook and listened to the audiobook.

Audiobook remarks: There are multiple narrators, all with smooth, easy-to-listen-to voices and clear enunciation. The team definitely adds to the reading experience. Well done!

Also: Great continuity. Ella’s appearance in this one sounded the same (if it’s not the same, it’s def close enough) as she did in Ella's Masquerade. (Cover below—a fun listen, check it out!)

Ebook remarks: Absolutely stunning. One of the prettiest book interiors I’ve ever seen. And editing is well done, content is free of distracting errors.

Therefore:
Ebook: 5 stars
Audiobook: 5 stars
Narrators’ performances: 5 stars to everyone.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The world-building alone warrants ALL the stars. 10 out of 5. This world is much like a drug; I’m addicted and will never get enough.

What a fun why choose Romance! I haven’t loved a why choose this much since The Bonds that Tie. While I like why choose they tend to lose the plot.

FMC is both strong and weak in the best way. Her body does betray her, but there’s magic at play which causes it. There is Fated destiny that’s she’s unaware of and so is the reader. So it’s fun to read it play out and of course none of it is nice, but you know it’s leading to all the whys so you tolerate it.

I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece I’m saying it a lot of fun.

FMC are hot and are not one dimensional

I will continue this series. I hope they are just as good

“Are you laughing at me? Do you find humor in him essentially raping me with his fangs and turning my world upside down?”

Fan-fucking-tastic! I didn't want this book to end! Argh!!!! I'm so sad that I finished it in just a few hours. I was completely engrossed. Fascinated from start to finish. An inferno between these characters. My fingers felt the sizzle while turning the pages. Hot!

"Explore every inch of her.
Degrade her.
Claim her.
Fucking mark her."

So if you read The Elemental Fae Series, you will know who Alfora is, the female main character in this series. If you haven't, it's perfectly fine to start this series without reading the other. I absolutely love the world that was built, different fae realms to get lost in. I was already intrigued with the darkness when I was reading The Elementals, and the start to this series did not disappoint. This book had my heart pounding, I could not turn the pages fast enough. Exhilarating and mesmerizing! I loved it so much. And the banter was hilarious at times. Enemies to lovers is a favorite of mine, I was soaking it up. I'd call this a slow burn, I couldn't wait to be devoured. Slade had me at first bite. Kols is growing on me. But Zeph, gods almighty, that's going to be one helluva ride. Hard and brutal for sure. And the M/M in this was the icing on fucking delicious tasting cake.

"Zeph enjoyed harsh sex. Anger was his aphrodisiac. Fighting served as foreplay. And we’d fought a lot these last few months, both mentally and physically."

I simply cannot wait until the next, this is going to be torturous. I'll just be over here with my collar like the eager submissive awaiting the next book.

If love/hate, reverse harem, fantasy is your thing. You better snatch this up! I highly recommend.

I'm a huge fan of this author, but I've put off reading this as academy books and RH aren't really my favourite genre to read. I should have known better, Lexi C Foss hasn't written a book I haven't loved and this was no exception! Fantastic world building and a mysterious, magical storyline kept me turning the pages.

So what do we have......three Midnight Fae men all vying for Aflora's attention. She's an Earth Fae Princess but after being bitten by Shade without her consent (which was a real dick move) she is thrust into a dark realm she doesn't belong in and into the midnight fae academy, while her powers are monitored and assessed.

These three guys.....what can I say, they all at time were utter asshats to Aflora, treating her horribly, but they were all mysterious, intriguing and enticing and stood up for her when it really mattered. I felt for Aflora being torn away from her life and responsibilities. I loved her, she was sweet, kind, her curses made me chuckle but she had an inner strength and determination, even as she hated (but loved) the pull of all three men. There was electric chemistry between them and some fiery heat between Kols and Zeph I'd definitely like to see more of please!  What is Shade up to? He has so many dark secrets and riddles but I couldn't help liking him, despite what he did to Aflora.

Although there was lots of sexy heat, the RH hasn't developed fully yet and the academy part actually took a back seat to the interactions and growing connection between the four. They were all in their twenties which helped too, so no immature teenage angst and mean girl bullies, yay!

Aflora's growing powers are mysterious and intriguing and after that cliffhanger ending I'm looking forward to finding out more!

After reading the review on this book , I wasn’t expecting a lot. Midnight fae academy surprised me because it wasn’t that bad. The love interests are a little stereotyped for my taste but the story is interesting.

Aflora is a great MC that tries to survive what happened to her. The love between the boys and her is not too fast. Of course I would have liked her to resist the guys a little longer but it’s ok.

I was not amazed by this book but I will read the 2e book to see if it has potential.

Shadow is quite the cocky man, “a willow stump,” he repeated, considering. “ Most women refer to my ***k as more of a tree trunk than a stump, but we can elaborate on the nuances of my girth later..." The man is such a tease, "Shade said, then caught my chin and lifted my gaze to his. “As does my shower and bed offer.” With a wink, he turned toward the door.." I liked this book, I loved the characters and I can't wait for more.

That Ending!!!!

Well this is a first. I am unsure of what rating to give this book.

Every time I read, I write my review as I go, that way I can take notes on key moments I liked/didn’t like. At the introduction of this story, I was feeling it as a solid 4 star book. I had just tried reading about a dozen other academy books that I had to DNF because they just weren’t gripping me, so I thought:

This is the One! The academy book that gets me hooked on the genre!

The writing and the world building had me cozying up in bed instantly. Even when Foss introduced Shade—who is obviously going to be one of the main love interests—as someone who basically forced himself on our sweet MC Aflora, I was willing to look past it and assume there was a backstory there or some reason.

However, my 4star rating quickly decayed too 3 and then 2 as more characters were introduced. When we meet Kols and he’s pulling the same crap as Shade, kissing Aflora on the temple without her consent, making fun of her rather-adorable cuss words, physically forcing her around the place... I was put off. He sounded so similar to Shade and it irked me.

Then, when we met Zeph, and he did the same: a grouchy, handsy man who kept getting way too physical with a girl who was clearly already dealing with enough.

I thought: is this just how all of the men in this book are going to be portrayed? Sarcastic, arrogant jerks who will strangle a woman or shove her into a wall at the drop of a dime?

It also had me wondering if academy books and reverse harem maybe just weren’t my think. Like I said, I’d DNFd a LOT of academy books by the time I picked this one up.

But then, something magical happened: I stopped caring. I threw all my notions aside about whether or not characters were similar and was able to start to see their nuances.

So then my rating started climbing again, about halfway through the book, and I’m not gonna lie, that might’ve just been because of all the steamy sexual tension going on. I mean holy smokes! This book didn’t waste a single opportunity to make you all flustered!

But what really cemented my rating on this book was the ending. THAT ENDING! So much happened over the course of those final pages, and my jaw was literally left dragging on the floor!!! Not in a cliffhanger way, just in a oh-my-goodness-I-can’t-believe-that-just-happened way!

So I’m rating this one 3.5/5 stars for me, but I’m almost certain than many readers would rate this one a 5, so hopefully they take this review with a grain of salt!

For me, it was a good book. The sexual tension was by far the best thing in the book though, leaving the characters themselves somewhere between 1- and 2-dimensional, and the general plot/conflict whispering somewhere in the background. Again though, I think most readers who read this genre probably do so FOR the heat, but I love me some rich plot and multidimensional characters, so I likely won’t be adding this to my favorite’s list. I will, however, be reading the next installment!

Aflora is a cross over character from Elemental Fae Academy. In that book we know she is an earth elemental and she is very timid and quiet.

She's now got her own book and it was fun to watch her grow as a character. She's clearly kindhearted, selfless, and compassionate. She however needs to grow a backbone. She has a small one but has never been forced to fight for anything, its not her elemental way but she's in a new world now and she's playing a game she's unaware of.

I did have an issue with Shadow and how he forced a claim on her which took all choice away and removed her into a world where she doesn’t want to be or belong, with a mate she never consented to.

The Midnight Fae are cold, logical, and calculating. Shade, Kol, and Zeph are not kind at all. They've all aso been raised to play the game, show no weakness, and to always keep control. Aflora does not take well to their attitudes and of course sparks ensue.

This book sets the stage really well for their future and their dynamic as a quad. Aflora is still uncovering who she is and the lack of straight answers and soft guidance is molding her into a force to be reckoned with.

The world makes more sense if you read Elemental Fae Academy and Fortune Fae Academy in the timeline suggested.

The sparks between Aflora and her three men are heady but the spice is tame in this book.

I really enjoyed book 1, it kept me captive during a 7h plane ride. I eagerly picked up book 2 looking for more.

I hated that the story essentially began with a rape. I seriously believe they could have started in a better manner than what basically amounted to fae rape(he mated her forcefully, a girl from a different sect of fae, which is strictly banned and usually results in getting the people involved executed...the only reason the heroine was spared temporarily was because she's a princess herself). And it would still have been acceptable if the heroine reacted in an appropriate manner, but NOPE. In the typical manner of dumb heroines everywhere, she basically swooned for her rapist the moment he began appearing in her dreams and started sleeping with him in her dreams, thereby completely undercutting the seriousness of what he did.

The book wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. There were some funny scenes at the beginning, with the heroine's hilarious cursing that I enjoyed, but the funny scenes were few and far between.

I believe I complained about the same issue while reading Elemental Fae Academy (book 1) too, that the transitions between scenes are weirdly abrupt, there's a lot of telling rather than showing. For example, we get TOLD multiple times that the midnight prince's fiancee bullied the heroine, but not once do we SEE it happening on the pages. It's like the author was too lazy to write the scene or sth.

The characters are not described all that well, they don't really have distinct personalities, they're just the Headmaster, the prince and the rapist. Totally cardboard cutouts. And the heroine is a dumb doormat to boot. I was kind of bored, the only reason I could finish is cause the book was fairly short. But I don't think I'll continue on with the series.

This book was pretty messed up. The dream sex thing was frankly gross and way too close to rape. They took advantage of her at every turn and never take her feelings into consideration. I hate books where the mate bond is forced on the characters. In my opinion it kills any would-be romance.

Also, what was the point of sending her to the academy if there is almost no focus on the academy itself or any of the other students. If the author wasn’t going to show anything of the school anyway why bother? She could’ve just been given a few private tutors and the story wouldn’t have changed at all.

I’ll probably give the next book a chance because the mystery part of it is interesting but I really hope the guys’ actions and attitudes change drastically. The only character I like at all at the moment is Shade and only because it seems like he didn’t have much of a choice to do what he did. That said there is still the creepy dream sex… yuck.
