Jack Quaid

Between the years 1980 and 1999, American novelist Jack Quaid produced a series of fun and wild stories where anything could happen, and with Quaid behind the typewriter, they usually did. He called these books his Electric Mayhem series.

Jack Quaid was born in West Hollywood, California, in 1953. He won a scholarship to UCLA but dropped out after six months for a reason that, to this day, remains unknown. Two years later, he sold his first short story to Startling Mystery Magazine, but it was the publication of his novel The City on the Edge of Tomorrow in 1980 and the film adaptation starring Bruce Dern that set him on his way.

Fearing his initial success would fade, Quaid wrote obsessively for the next two decades and published under many pseudonyms. It’s unknown just how many books he produced during this period, but despite the name on the jacket, savvy readers always knew they were reading a Jack Quaid novel within the first few pages.

His books have long been out of print, and they now live on the dusty shelves of secondhand bookstores and in the memories of those who have been lucky enough to read them.

Quaid’s current whereabouts are unknown.

the ideal conclusion to a kickass series. i love these books so much 🥹

the final girl trope is handed to us on a silver platter, deconstructed, and then put back together again. parker ames changed the game for all, and she created her own definition of the final girl. i started this series because the idea of a final girl taking back her life, including everything ripped out of her grasp by turning the tables and HUNTING the things that go bump in the night? talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping.

everything was wrapped up perfectly, but i wouldn’t be surprised if another trilogy was released following sam after her training, her hacking and slashing her way through a bunch of sons of bitches in the future with her mom by her side. saving people, hunting things, the family business. i would love to see it. please, i need to see it.

My favorite book in the series. Parker has something to live for. And we have more than one character to care about. Also… no missing chapters!!

The grand finale of Parker Ames adventures is a solid and entertaining novel that breaks from the formula established by the previous two novels. The premise of the series is two fold: with a framing device of Luke Preston (the real author) seeking out the manuscripts of fictional 80s author Jack Quaid and the second being the adventures of slasher hunter Parker Ames. Luke Preston meets the "real" Parker Ames as she directs him to the final story in the series.

Parker can't win for losing as she hooks up with a heavy metal slasher named Hell alongside her pal Corey (Feldman?) and gets knocked up. Deciding that she can't justify hunting slashers while pregnant, she retires and takes up a new name in Slaughter Beach. Her ex-partner Corey continues to hunt monsters for the next decade and a half until he comes across the resurrected Hurricane Williams who wiped out Parker's family.

This is a surprisingly touching story and I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of the Jaime Lee Curtis sequels to Halloween H20 and the 2016 version. Parker can't escape her past but deserves every bit of happiness that she gets. I also liked the character of Joe and wouldn't mind seeing more of him as well as Mom Parker.

Ten years ago, Parker sent Hurricane Williams back to Hell — at a cost. After losing the man she loved, she hung up her chainsaw and machete, trading them for sleepless nights and nappies.
Now she’s a housewife, a member of the PTA, and her hunting days are long behind her.
Until Corey shows up, letting her know the monster who ruined her life — twice — is back.

This was a brilliant conclusion to an amazing trilogy. We got to see a completely new side of Parker, and unlike the previous books, we have more than one person to root for this time. I loved seeing Corey again, especially how he’s grown and taken over the business. There were plenty of funny moments to break up the tension, and thankfully, no missing chapters this time! It also seems like this book had a better editor — there weren’t nearly as many mistakes.
Absolutely loved this one. I just wish there were more books in the series. I’d love to see more of Sam learning to become a hunter too.

I decent ending to a fun series. Throughout this series you can really feel the author coming into his own. The first two books are a little rough around the edges but with each installment things get dialed in a bit more. The over the top back stories of minor characters in previous novels, feels much more natural and less intrusive in this one. Everything just flowed much better in this novel.

As for the story, well, once again we are treated to an over the top 80's slasher nostalgiafest. Once more we pit Parker Ames against her nemesis Hurricane Williams. The action is well paced, the gore descriptive (but not too descriptive), and the characters gain some new layers of development. Overall I was pleased with the series and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to 80's horror fans.

The end of an Era, the formatting for this book and the writing style is so unique and I can safely say I've never read anything like it.
Of course the series has its issue like every book does. Such as the slight discrepancies.
This book a found a few times where lines were repeated accidently and few time it got a little repetitive. There was also the part in the school with the four boys that were named and then the boy who spoke had a different name.
But I really did enjoy this series and this book specifically. I wish we could get more from this universe.

Great series

Hoping for more "discovered" Parker books. Maybe Robert Rodriguez could help. Something tells me Jack might have slipped him a few ideas for Planet Terror.

Minor Spoilers

I have to give Quaid, Preston, whoever mad props for the beginning of this installment. Preston reminisces about obtaining the manuscript for this entry in the Hollywood Hills, where he once partied with Brian Austin Greene. Honestly, the funniest and most intriguing introduction out of the three.

It’s the early nineties , and a lot has changed for Parker Ames-she’s pregnant, fully fledged, and falls for a grungy fellow hunter, unsurprisingly named Hell. They are both madly in love, and ready to settle down after killing one more Slasher. The first few chapters, dealing with a religious cult in Montana (and no it’s not Kanye’s) set up the sweeping Quaid formula that grabbed my attention in the first two : humor, gore, and fast-paced action.

As always, Parker’s plans fall straight to Hell, and she is now living a normal life with a normal family in Slaughter Beach, Delaware. I won’t dive into the specifics that shape her new life, but her character remains abstracted and withdrawn, leaving local townsfolk (and unexpected visitor) to finish this slasher saga.

All the elements that attracted me to the first installments were still present, including Aerosmith and Eldorado, but for the most part, they didn’t help bring closure to number three. This is only a slight setback for me and I still highly recommend ESCAPE FROM HAPPYDALE and ESCAPE FROM BASTARD TOWN.
