Is there really such a thing as a quarter life crisis? You bet your ass there is. We should be married, maybe with kids, have a great job - but have a body like you don’t, and have our lives all figured out. There is this existential pressure on women to have it all and do it all. Even if you rebuff this pressure, subconsciously, it’s still there. Middle fingers up to assumptions about where we should all be with our lives at a certain point. Am I right?
I’m Laura Kincaid. The last year of my life has been what dreams are made of, but I think I’ve forgotten my own dreams. My best friend and I traveled across the country with no responsibilities. However, the lack of structure and routine got to me, and now I’m a little lost and I can’t figure out why. I’m a planner, a doer, and a lover of all things sparkly. My quarter life crisis started one night when I realized I was in love. Don’t worry, reading about my hot mess will make you feel better about yours.
R.L. lives in the Atlanta area with her husband, son, and two dogs. After going to law school at American University, Washington College of Law, she settled back in the state in which she grew up but only after she fell in love with D.C. She worked in the Senate during the impeachment trial and the Department of Justice.
She loves reading all sorts of books and rarely has free time.
This is the story of a woman who seemingly has the perfect life but struggles personally with whether she is worthy of a second chance.
If you read book one in this series, you already know the fun vibe of the two main characters. While book one was about Megan Walker and she path to love, this one is about her BFF, Laura Kincaid.
On the surface, Laura has it all. An awesome job working with her BFF. That same BFF is a millionaire, which affords the two to have a lot of fun, including riding a private plane. Jealous!! And she has a number of suitors who would love to spend more time with her. However, Laura has not fully recovered from her past. Without getting this book covers a lot of heavy themes. Death Suicide PTSD Cheating But the author tones them down, weaving the difficult parts within a mostly happy story of two BFFs and their daily antics.
I really enjoy the banter between Laura, Megan and their mutual friend, Justin. They insult each other left and right, but it is clear they all care deeply about one another. Laura internalizes a lot of the heartache and pain she feels about her past, believing that she isn't worthy of a second chance in love. And her friends try their best to pull her out of that slump with a series of LOL outings.
It wasn't clear what direction Laura's love life would lead. She clearly has a deep connection with Maximilian "Max" Faulk, the BFF of Megan's fiancé. But she seems to push away from that connection, not feeling worthy of his attention. On top of that, it is unclear as to whether Max is involved with Delaney, and new co-worker and friend. Not sure why the uncertainty of this relationship was dragged out. Add that potential drama to Max's own personal issues, and you have a recipe for some angst. Which I didn't expect.
“Is Max the one that will change your mind? Does he deserve to peel away all of your armor? The one that seems to cut through all the shit you told yourself for...how many years?”
With all of the angst/drama mentioned above, does take time for the romance to fully develop in this story, but the author does a great job of keeping the reader entertained along with way. Laura, Megan and Justin are a riot and total a group I'd want to hang around. If you are looking for a story that has a mixture of laughs and tough inner reflection, this is worth checking out.
“Lo, nothing is going to change in reality. You already filled in all my cracks.” “That’s a weird way of putting it.” “Why? Without you, I’d fall apart.”
Love is not enough emotion to describe how much I enjoyed reading this book. The complex emotions and struggle that both Laura and Max go through before they can share a relationship is enough to bring you to tears. But wait this book isn't just a tear jerker, is is extremely funny as well. The relationship Laura and Megan share is more than just besties, they are sisters in life that compliment one another. All the characters in this book will fill your heart with love and compassion making this book more than just a must read... It is a must have. A book that you can treasure and hold dear to your heart. This book tells you that even though life give you a curve ball, you can still pick yourself up and find the one person that will complement you in every way. No one is broken, just a little bent. Perfection in a cover!
WOW! Laura & Max’s love blew me away! The friendship between Laura & Megan is a beautiful thing full of love and laughs. Add Justin and you’ll be laughing out loud. I couldn’t put this book down and was up way too late. Great story!
An Arc of this book was provided to me I exchange for an honest review. 📚 I want to preface this review by stating that I did not realize this was the second book in the series until I was finished reading. I believed each of the books to be standalones and now I'm wondering if they were more connected than I realized because I spent a majority of this book confused. I felt like we didnt get to know enough about the love interest (I call him that because honestly he was only in like maybe a third of the book) and therefore I didnt really care about him all that much. Honestly that wouldn't have bothered me all that much, had our narrator had some deeper more profound revelations about who she was as a person, or what she wanted out of life and I dont really feel like we got that. She's struggling with something throughout the entire book and it was the mystery of what that thing was that kept me going. I will say I was happy that when it was finally revealed it was something worthy of all the turmoil that she had gone through. I dont want to spoil anything but it was a very traumatic experience, that she held herself responsible for. 📚 One thing I really loved was the side characters! Her best friends and the driver/handyman Chuck we're awesome! True friends who told it straight and never sugarcoated things! We all need people like that in our lives! Especially Lucky the dog! 📚 If you read this one, what did you think? I'd love to have a discussion with someone with opposing opinions and maybe see this from a different perspective! Maybe someone that read the first book in the series can tell me if my feelings of disjointedness stem from my not reading the first book and the novella between. 📚 Thank you to Give me Books (@GiveMeBooksPR) and R.L. Griffin (@RLGriffinauthor) for providing me with this ARC and the opportunity to be part of this team!
Laura, or Lo, has it all, or so it seems. Underneath it all, she is just like the rest of us with flaws, insecurities and scars on her heart. After a yearlong vacation with her BFF Megan, the Lottery Lolita, the girls settle in Napa to run their new business. Megan gets engaged to her dream man, and Lo thinks she will be the fun, single friend forever- the one who holds everyone at a distance.
Even though she's living the dream in Napa (who wouldn't kill for those views!!), Lo still has a huge hole in her heart from her past and she struggles to accept happiness. Enter Max, an equally struggling individual with whom she shares the first spark in forever. They both have so much to work through, it seems impossible. Little by little, Lo reveals herself and her inner demons, and works so hard to conquer them. Can that be enough? Can love be enough to save her relationship with Max, who turns out to be everything she ever wanted? Is she worthy? As a person with flaws, scars, and quirks, I teared up quite a few times and felt like Lo needed a big hug, even though she is NOT a hugger. At times, I identified with her so much, that she could be telling parts of my story. The sarcasm, the witty banter, the pace- it was all on point. Through reading this series, the characters have become like real people that I could imagine seeing out somewhere. They are so crafted that they're believable. This is definitely NOT your average romance and definitely worth the read.
What a journey for Laura! This book is a great example of not judging a book by it’s cover because while things may seem perfect and great on the outside, it’s the complete opposite on the inside. Laura seems to have the perfect life; a great job, great friends and family, and other things, but in actuality she is still dealing with the aftermath and trauma of the loss she experienced years ago. This loss is holding her back in her relationship with Max, and the course of the book deals with both her working through her loss as well as Max and his PTSD (among other things). The two of them really play a song and dance throughout the book of who can one-up the other in terms of pushing the other away, and sometimes it got a little frustrating to read because you just wanted to shake them! This book really focuses on feelings and working through your past in order to have a future. Definitely read the first book, because I didn’t and I wish I would have as it would’ve probably given me more in terms of context clues and previous situations. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This was definitely a great summer read! It was full of absolutely lovable friendships. The friendships that Laura had with Megan and Justin was laugh out loud funny. It makes you wish for friends like that for your own life. They just jumped off the pages at you.
Laura, oh Laura. My heart physically hurt for her. There were so many great lessons and thoughts in this book. I found myself really seeing myself in Laura. Laura really needs routine in her life. She does well with routine. (Although, I wish I made the routine to run as much as Laura does in her life). She hasn't felt a connection to someone for a long time when Max comes along. Max really has some great one liners and some not so great one liners. The relationship is definitely back and forth and your heart gets put through the ringer.
The angst and emotions of this book will have you crying and then laughing at the next page. The fluidity was written amazingly well. You'll end the book just happy but mad that you don't have these characters in your everyday life.
This was my first book in this series and I didn't have any problems catching up! This book had me all in my emotions I laughed, cried and yelled several times. This book shows you that love isnt always enough you gotta work hard and keep trying in relationships. Laura is struggling with her past and she constantly is in her head. Max has his own issues with PTSD which is hard. These two both make mistakes and don't wither wanna own up to. But I will say when they get it right its it's pretty awesome!!!
Long and involved, got lost in the words. One of my biggest problems was the use of “endearments”, tiring and just too, too, much. If you read this book, understanding will come. The main character had many and lengthy depressions, anger and self esteem problems, we the readers had no real clue to the reason, other than a tragedy close to the wedding, and this just went on and on until the last few chapters at the end of the book. Good read, for someone other than me.
This is the second book in this series. Laura seems to be living her dream and working with her BFF as well, but inside the insecurities as hidden, and many obstacles have to be overcome for her and Max before they can move forward into a relationship. This is a good story which is humorous, but to be honest this was not my favorite story as I felt like the story seemed to jump all over the place. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
I really enjoyed this book, I haven't read one from this author in a while and I'm wondering why. She writes so well, you can't help but be pulled in and stay there until you are done. I did enjoy this book and liked the characters, even though at times I felt they were acting kind of childish. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I really enjoyed Midnights & Mimosas. I am new to RL Griffin, but I was intrigued from the first paragraph! I wish I would have read the first book in this series before reading this one. I felt a little lost going in. I thought it was well written with good characters.
I have been waiting for a new R.L. Griffin book and I can say that she 100% delivered! I loved Laura’s story with all my heart, yes I loved her in Sunshine & Whiskey but I have a whole new take on her now! She wasn’t what I expected, her story wasn’t what I expected but damn, I love her.
This is Laura’s journey and as with any book from R.L. Griffin it took me on an emotional ride. Sure she is sarcastic and funny but she’s got some real pain in there too and as it all unfolded it broke my heart at times. I laughed, and hurt and got a little mad, but I loved it. I loved the realness and the rawness I felt from her, and the strength she has, even if she thinks she’s broken. And then there’s Max, and their complicated situation. I understood it, I could see where it was all supposed to be casual fun, and then the heart gets involved and for Laura, what do you do when you don’t think it’s supposed to happen?! And what happens when you find out that the other person is just as broken?
So yeah, she’s part hot mess, part amazeballs and when you add in Max, Megan and the rest of the crew it’s an amazing ride! I love that R.L. Griffin can make me laugh and cry and feel in every book! This is a must read!
If you are new to this series and this is the first book you are thinking of reading, I would suggest you read book one first. I came to 'Midnights & Mimosas' first and I felt that I was missing a lot of Laura and Max's back story.
Laura is working alongside her best friend Megan, who won the lottery. Laura has had feelings for Max for a long time but never done anything about it as she feels that he deserves better because she is broken. Laura is still grieving for her fiance who died two weeks before their wedding. Max is a former military man who is trying to put his life together after losing his brother in arms and his leg. He also thinks he doesn't deserve Laura because he is broken.
The problem I had with this was that we didn't actually get to meet Max until about 30% into the book but there was lots of referring back to past events. It felt as though I was missing parts of the jigsaw. Now don't get me wrong, I laughed at lots of different points of this book and I felt the emotion of these characters at different points in the book. I am going to go back and read book 1 in the hope that it helps fill in the gaps.
“R.L. is back with book number two in the Drinking Series. I highly recommend you to read book 1 to fully understand Laura and Max’s story.
Midnights &. Mimosas it’s a funny and unique story.
It’s a story about two broken people.
Laura and Max are still weeping a loss. A broken person can’t love someone who’s also broke, right? At least that’s what they keep saying to themselves, denying their attraction but sometimes a special person cross on your pathway and changed your whole life no matter how cracked and damaged you might be.
I feel in love with the characters personalities, they were so authentic. Playful and humurous. A so well-develop story packed with all the feels. Don’t miss this series.”
There are so many parts of this story and of the characters that I can relate to. Griffin took some deep subjects such as the death of a loved one and PTSD, while still incorporating humor, to craft a great book.
