Civilization has crumbled since the EMP thrust humanity back into the Stone Age, and dangerous factions now scavenge for scarce resources in this terrifying new world.
Austin Merryman wonders what the future holds for his teenaged daughter, and if the madness surrounding them is even worth surviving. For now, the group is safe in his brother’s prepper house nestled in the Rockies. But the calm can’t last forever. With sixteen people crammed together in the tiny mountain home, tensions are bound to erupt. It doesn’t help that his brother’s lazy friend gets twisted pleasure from stirring up animosity, pitting brother against brother and daughter against father as battle lines are drawn.
But decisions about who stays and who goes are ripped from their hands as information on the USB drive lays bare pieces of the NWO’s plans. Austin realizes the horrifying truth of why he’s in their sights, as well as the danger he’s brought down on those he loves most. When tragedy again strikes the small group, it will be up to Austin to make the hard choices necessary to ensure their survival.
Until a dying man utters the single word that changes everything…
This novel contains violence and scenes with referenced substance abuse.
Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.
Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"
It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.
I had a good time with this book. After listening to the first book in the series, I was pretty eager to see what would happen next to Austin, Savannah and the rest of the group. This is a series that needs to be read in order since it is a continuation of the same overall story arc with each book building on the previous installment. I thought that this was a very well done installment.
This book had a bit of a different feel. The shock of the EMP has passed and the group has made it to a place that should be safe so their focus has shifted to learning to live together and be self-sufficient. This is a big group and they don't necessarily blend together easily so just living together is going to take a lot of work. It was really quite interesting to hear the plans they were making on how to survive and sustain such a large group.
There was some excitement to keep things interesting as well. Most of the action occurred later in this book but I enjoyed the lead-up. It sometimes seems that this group just cannot catch a break. They have to try to figure out if the data they hold could make a difference and stop the group responsible for the EMP and they have to fight to stay safe. It seems like there is one challenge after another.
Maxwell Zener did a great job with this book. I think that he stayed really consistent with the character voices that he used in the two books in the series. This series has a really large cast of characters and I love how varied and unique each voice was. I thought that he added a lot of excitement and emotion into the reading.
I would recommend this book to fans of apocalypse stories. This was a very enjoyable addition to the series with a nice balance of action and emotional scenes. I look forward to reading more of this exciting series.
I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author/narrator via Audiobook Boom and have voluntarily left this review.
As I loved Survive The Chaos, which was book one in this Small Town EMP series I was keeping an eye out for more of the series. The cover of this book fits well with that of the first book, which means that the series have a cohesive look. The genre is post-apocalyptic, which I have to admit is one of my favourite genres to read. There is a “trigger warning” about substance abuse, it is actually alcohol abuse and is only a small part of the book.
The book basically picks up where book one left off. There are some awkward questions and decisions that need to be made, some will be not be popular with the rest of the group but it becomes apparent that someone needs to take the lead and ask these questions. For the time being all sixteen people are safe at Ennis Merryman’s prepper ready house. However, with so many people staying in close proximity, including the revivalist party who originally only wanted to stay temporarily and then continue their journey to Salt Lake, their own home base. The house is seriously overcrowded which means people are starting to irritate each other as well as the food provisions are being reduced at a more rapid rate than they were ever meant to be. Broaching the subject is going to be difficult as though the house and supplies belong to Ennis it is his brother Austin that everyone seems to look at as a leader of the group. Within the revivalists, Tonya seems to be in charge though they are all looking to Malachi to lead the prayers etc stepping into his father shoes as he would have eventually been trained to do.
I have really become attached to some of the characters in this series so far. Savannah is still set on the possibilities of a relationship with Malachi and does things she comes to regret in an attempt to get his attention.
Nash is still one of my favourite characters and is staying at the house and still helping a lot around the place though sadly he seems to become more and more side lined by certain people in the house. Of course, my favourite couple in the book is Austin and Amanda, I hope they survive the series and end up together! A little romantic hope in a post-apocalyptic setting!
A character I thoroughly enjoyed disliking in the last book and became even more so in this book was Wendell. He doesn’t want to take part in any manual tasks and will only do “inventory” of the supplies they have. As time goes on it becomes apparent why he enjoys doing inventory when it is discovered he has been helping himself to large portions of the alcohol. It’s not just that he isn’t very practical, or a bit lazy, he goes out of his way to cause problems in this book, pitting brother against brother at every opportunity. Then when there’s a case of everyone making a stand, he goes away to hide with a bottle of alcohol.
There is the constant threat of the New Order searching for Austin and his family. They desperately want to retrieve the USB, and Austin is as desperate to find out what is on it! With help from Nash they try to decode it, and at one point, Austin has to go in search of a woman his friend Callum said would know what to do with the information.
Some of the revivalists, such as Tonya and Bonnie are still grieving for the loss of their husbands but all make a conscious decision to help out and create a life at Ennis’s house. Despite their religious beliefs they take part in self-defence, and weapons training. They all need to be prepared to fight to protect each other and what they have in the way of food etc. There is much more to be revealed about the mine where Nash was when the power went out, as well as more to be learnt about the New Order. Sadly, it seems there are small bands of survivors who are often aggressive to outsiders. It seems the New Order are giving out propaganda encouraging survivors to distrust each other.
My immediate thoughts upon finishing the book were, Seriously, looking forward to more of this series! Lost some brilliant characters in this part of the series! Will those remaining survive? What is on the USB drive? Will the group ever find somewhere safe to settle? Will *?*?* and the New Order catch up to them?
So, to sum up I looooove this book, its characters and I am seriously looking forward to read more! Grace Hamilton is firmly on my favourite authors list!
This book is very well written and easy to read and understand. It's just a passable read for me though, as it isn't my preferred genre and I just wasn't that entertained by the scenario. If you are interested in the apocalypse, survivalists, prepping, lots of characters, living in the wilderness off the land, then you will enjoy this. There are multiple points of view, weapons, religion, talk of cults etc. This is book two and I would recommend you start at the beginning to understand the back story. Be aware too, that this is an ongoing series. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in return for my honest opinion.
I received this audible title via a Audiobook Boom promo code and this is my voluntary review. This boxset comprises 3 titles by Grace Hamilton. Survive the Chaos, Survive the Aftermath & Survive the Conflict. This series follows the journey of grieving journalist Austin Merryman as he travels cross-country with his 14 year old daughter Savannah. In the first book the two are separated after an EMP knocks out power to the US and a strange gunman tries to kill Austin, forcing him over a bridge after a college buddy of his hands him heavily shielded USB. Austin survives but his friend does not. Stranded with a broken leg, he is recued by Amanda, a vet who patches him up and then joins him on his quest to reunite with Savannah. Thankfully his brother Ennis is one of those crazy prepper types and he's got a slice of safety carved out for himself as the post-apocalyptic world is no longer a friendly place. Savannah is suffering all kinds of hormonal teenage girl problems and dealing with the end of the world as she knows it, alone on the road with a group of bible thumping revivalists, she's accompanied by Malachi and his family the group travel towards Salt Lake City & her uncles prepper house nestled in the Rockies. Someone is feeding the mistrust and winds of discontent encouraging different factions to rise up and murder their fellow citizens and it soon becomes apparent that this New World Order, has its own nefarious intentions, and as the dangers increase, Austin finds himself hunted for the information on that USB drive enlisting the help of his new family group to complete his NSA Agent friends mission to strike back before their apocalypse becomes permanent.
Now... the writing itself: Some parts of the book weren't for me, I'm not overly into religious sentiments so the constant praying from some characters was a bit much, and there are slight overuses of certain phrases (like constantly being told how thin or tired someone was, or how 'useful' a person would be) and the overall tone of the writing occasionally felt a bit snooty/superior and preachy like it was written to lecture non-prepper types, and assuming that Austin's group was the only people capable of taking responsibility for themselves.
Maxwell Zener did an amazing job at the narration, 291/2 hours is a long time to listen to a book but he held my attention as I devoured the book over 5 days.
Survive the Aftermath is the second book in the Small Town EMP series by Grace Hamilton. Survive the Aftermath grabbed my attention from the first page and never let go. I fell in love with the Small Town EMP series with the first book Survive the Chaos and I couldn’t wait to dive into book two, Survive the Aftermath.
Survive the Aftermath picks up where Survive the Chaos left off. Austin and Amanda have finally made it to his brother’s cabin. Austin was very glad to see his daughter Savannah had made it.
At least sixteen people are staying at the cabin. With so many people living in one little cabin, everyone is starting to get on each other’s nerves. There is one guy Wendell, a friend of Austin’s brother, Ennis who in particular is getting on everyone’s nerves the most.
All he wants to do is inventory while everyone else is outside doing all the heavy work. The reason Wendell wants to do inventory is because he wants to drink all the liquor.
Austin is still trying to find out what is on that USB. A group of people known as the New World Order is still looking for Austin as they want to get their hands on that USB. What is on that USB? Why do they want it so bad that they are willing to kill for it?
Austin and Amanda are teaching everyone how to defend themselves against the bad people in the world now. Yeah, the world has changed and so have a lot of people. People who are willing to kill to take whatever they want.
I know I have said it before but I am going to say it again. I love reading post-apocalyptic stories. I can’t seem to get enough of them. Survive the Aftermath was just as good if not better than the first book Survive the Chaos. The world-building is spot on.
The suspense kept me glued to the pages racing to the end not that I wanted it to end, never, but only because I couldn’t stop as I wanted to know how it was going to turn out. Oh, and I want to know what is on the USB. I wanted to know if Savannah and Malachi’s relationship was going to progress or not. I would also like to see if Austin and Amanda finally get together or not. I hope they do.
I highly recommend Survive the Aftermath to all post-apocalyptic and dystopian fans. Grab a copy of Survive the Aftermath today!
This was another great book but they definitely need to be read in order. There are lots of people to keep track of and if you don’t have the background from book 1, it will be hard to know why they are where they are and why they are doing some of the things they do.
One thing that annoyed me in this book was the amount of times Merryman got snuck up on. I mean, COME ON! It’s the end of the world (basically). He’s been the one preaching about shoring up defenses, making sure everyone knows how to protect themselves, stay vigilant, stay vigilant, stay vigilant. But it’s like he’s been ambushed 5 or 6 times. Good grief. How about a little bit of awareness?!
I cried in this one. I am very upset and mad about something that happened toward the end of the book. No spoilers but I feel like if all the things that could have happened - this one….felt too soon?….maybe…..? Idk. Everyone in the story has lost someone and you know logically that bad things are going to keep happening but……..this…….this just feels wrong to me on so many levels. I really don’t think it needed to happen at all and I’m upset by it.
Pretty good. I'm happy I continued with this series. While it has a few small issues, the timeline and plot line seemed to have a few tiny issues. But nothing that was a big deal. If these little issues bug you, get a life lol. But again, book two was pretty great. Held my attention through the whole thing. And I am looking forward to see how book 3 wraps things ups. I'm pretty sure it's a trilogy. Also, The narrator did another great job. I didn't love him at first but he definitely grew on me. 😁 Oh, and one of my favs was killed off. Shoulda killed off the annoying guy Wendy. Lol. He sucks.
This audiobook was given to me for free. I am providing a honest review. (Thanx for the books and sorry it took me forever! )
This is book 2 in the Small Town EMP series and I think I would have liked it better if I had read book 1. There are at least 3 currently available in the series. Austin, his teen daughter have made it to his brother's safe house in the mountains. With 16 people in the cabin it can be a bit tense. The group finds a USB drive with the plans for human destruction and a takeover of the planet by a small group called NWO. For readers who love end of civilization stories, this would fill the bill. Not my cup of tea. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Survive the Aftermath is the 2nd book in the series. The survivors have definitely grown in character in book 2. People that you expected to stay in the book have died. People that you have grown to dislike intensely, keep surviving. Romance takes a back burner in book 2...always there, and always a possibility, but not out there in the front. People have died that have made me cry. Moving on immediately to finish reading this wonderful series.
It feels like with this book things ramped up as you turned the pages. First everyone starts to settle into the house, to find ways to live with each other, to live in how the world is now. Little skirmishes pop up here and there, some stupid, some very valid.
Towards the end it's a battle again, one where everyone is fighting for their survival. I hated the ones that were lost in the battle. It does seem like there is a glimmer of hope at the end, or maybe that is my wishful thinking.
The book got off to a very slow start. However, once the enemy (NWO) was identified. Things took off and got a little sketchy. Typical EMP thriller with some major hardships, loose characters and lots of blazing guns. One of the main characters was killed and he was a favorite of mine. Let’s see what ls on the USB, which in my opinion is a good reason to continue the series.
Audible:Book 2,Small town EMP.I loved it!Austin is trying to get along in the house his brother built. It was a prepper place for 1,now holding too many.Should they split up?Who is in charge? It just keeps getting better as society gets worse. Maxwell Zener was a fantastic narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Survival always comes at a cost. Austin is now a hunted man by the people who created the EMP the chaos that erupted shortly after. They kill whoever stands in there way. They make the cruelest dictators of the past look like choir boys. Non stop action in this remarkable read. My highest recommendation!
Such a heartbreak as the loose members of their group, food is getting harder to come by and the overcrowding is on daddy's nerves. Important than and likeable members are lost this causing me to send a few tears
Enjoyed reading this book. The author of the book presents numerous interesting perspectives into what might happen in the future. Fabulous story line with interesting characters that held my interest through out the entire story.
Another great book with well balanced aspects between the characters. There is no one saves all, this is a story of how different characters come together and solve the puzzle before them.
What a talented author!! She is now in my TOP 5 ! I am now starting on book 3 and looking forward to finding out what exactly *#*#*#*#*** is.... You didn't think I would give anything away, did you?
3.5 stars: So far this is an "ok" read. Its available on Kindle Unlimited so I will continue to read the series. This is your typical EMP series. So if your into this you will like this series so far.
At points I felt like the plot was slow going, however I do really love most of the characters, and by the end I was definitely looking forward to the third installment.
Love this book series. Hard to stop and go to bed at night ! Only problem is that sooner or later it will be over and I will have to find another to read !
How many will survive? The NWO group continues to relentlessly search for Austin. Nash wonders what is behind the mystery door. Who or what holds the key?
Austin and Amanda catch up with Savannah and the group of Revivalists; aka Mormons. They make a detour to Austin’s brother Enis’s home tucked away in the Rockies. The eighteen Mormons are not eager to travel the remaining miles to Utah given the violence they have seen already. Staying at Enis’s large farmhouse presents its own set of problems; i.e., overcrowding, housing, food, water, and ammunition. The USB drive regains focus as Nash tries to decode and interpret the contents. Within the USB drive exists a whole new conspiracy, along with trouble for the Merryman clan. The N.W.O. is making its play for control of the country now in turmoil. How the Merryman’s fit into this conspiracy is yet to be revealed. Plenty of twists and turns to come. My only complaint is the stupid things people do and yet continue to survive. I think they would have all died if not for Amanda. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Survive the Aftermath is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a group of characters trying to survive the aftermath of an EMP attack. I found Grace Hamilton's writing to be descriptive but not overly. The plot and the characters were well-developed. The suspense is great, injected with great timing. Overall, this audiobook is a nonstop thrill, with many twists and turns that will have you wholly absorbed. I look forward to the third book in this series.
