McDonough is the founding principal of William McDonough + Partners and was the dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. He works in green and sustainable architecture, often incorporating his theory of cradle-to-cradle design.

Pouco adianta vivermos em um mundo onde todos sabemos que a estrutura social deve mudar e se adequar mais para uma coexistência interconectada com o meio-ambiente, mas ninguém que bota a mão na massa e constrói o artificial sabe por onde implementar essas mudanças.
Os Princípios de Hannover: Projeto pela Sustentabilidade é texto muito importante sobre como integrar conceitos de ecologia profunda e ecologia social em projetos de engenharia, sobre remodelar o espaço de restrições de projetos de forma que se adeque a questões ambientais e naturalmente o projeto emerja seguindo preceitos ecológicos de engenharia perene e dissolução da barreira humano/natureza.
Deveria ser um texto obrigatório, lido, relido e discutido a cada semestre de todo curso de engenharia.
