Really helpful, changed the way I think about the job search process for the better. Much easier to read than I expected due to the humour and likeability of the author. Filled to the brim with relatable examples, good advice, tips and templates to use. Definitely a book I will keep and re-read many times.

So, so helpful for anyone looking for a job and not the same boring advice you see everywhere! The book has lots of templates for resumes, cover letters, emails and LinkedIn approaches - it’s very practical instead of just telling you to “follow your dreams”

In this engaging and funny book, Alexa Shoen lays out a simple, step by step guide on how to H-U-S-T-L-E.
With grace and humour she shares best practices for research, interview techniques, and some amazing tips for networking and building authentic connections. It's aimed at people just starting their careers but a lot of the advice is evergreen. Super helpful!

Some of you might not know this, but one of my side hustles is providing job hunting and job application assistance in the form of resumes, cover letters and interview coaching through my Extra Edge business (https://www.extraedge.com.au/). I like to stay up to date when it comes to job hunting and career changes and reading #EntryLevelBoss: a 9-step guide for finding a job you like (and actually getting hired to do it) by Alexa Shoen was like a shot of adrenalin to the system.
Alexa Shoen runs an online education company for job seekers and likens her approach to a fitness program for job hunting. Full of info geared towards graduates and school leavers but applicable to employees and the unemployed no matter what stage in their career they find themselves.
Shoen echoes much of what I've been sharing with my clients for years in terms of marketing yourself to the specific job and company. Here's her take on the job ad and job description.
"At its core, a job description is a CV, but in reverse. It is a marketing tool designed to pique interest from the right people. All any company is ever trying to say with a job description is: "We need someone who kind of knows about this kind of stuff, who could help us do something kind of like this. We think that's what we need, anyway. Is it you?" Page 30
Some candidates see one or two items in a job ad or position description that they've never done before or don't have much experience in and decide they don't qualify for the job. Wrong! Give it a go anyway, what have you got to lose?
Occasionally a piece of advice came as a shock, like the advice not to include your physical address on your CV. I'm not sure I agree with her on that one, but largely, I absolutely agree with her 9 steps and I've recommended many of them to my clients over the years.
#EntryLevelBoss is an up to the minute take on job hunting and Shoen's energy and enthusiasm almost leaps off the page. Her mission is straight forward: to help good people land great jobs, as quickly as possible. Sounds great doesn't it? She's confident and sassy and openly shares some of her own examples from cover letters and email interactions to provide real world examples; both good and bad.
Alexa Shoen is a careers expert worth listening to, so if your job hunting has stagnated or you need a confidence boost or a fresh approach, #EntryLevelBoss is well worth the read. Shoen is also active on social media and provides plenty of resources on her website to reinvigorate and focus your job hunting process, so get out there and go for it!

This book has really changed my perspective on the job-searching process. Looking for a job after university, particularly as we are currently in the middle of a pandemic, has been an anxiety induced and exhausting experience for me thus far, with my previous approach. However, the insights provided in this book, particularly those from the side of the hiring managers, have really helped me to understand the importance of not just flinging your faceless CV and formal cover letter into the void.
There are valuable tips on how to be approachable to employers, how to be memorable and how to use your time effectively rather than hopelessly browsing outdated job postings on LinkedIn. This book has helped me realise how I can shape my CV and cover letter to demonstrate my skills in a much more interesting way, and I'm excited to start using some of these techniques.
On another note, this book is unexpectedly entertaining for a book about job seeking; Alexa is funny and relatable. Will definitely return to this book whenever I need a boost of motivation.

This is the career/life advice you need to hear. Literally everything in this book. It felt like it was directed to me - your University degree is not a guarantee of a good job, a career will not just fall into your lap, and you can't wait for someone else to tell you whar to do.
It's also amazing to know that other people are in the same boat I'm in! I'm now inspired to spend time choosing a career and figuring out what to do with my life, something I've never actually done before.
The book is brilliantly written - funny and easy to read - with helpful examples and templates throughout. I would definitely recommend this for anyone (everyone) who doesn't quite know what they're doing career-wise!

I came across Alexa on a zoom chat discussing publishing recruitment and was immediately captivated by her energy, knowledge and sheer zest. As such, I was thrilled when I saw that my library had a copy of her book. It's slim for sure, but is crammed full of SO much wisdom and written with a warmth that encourages you to actually take some damn action and apply for that dream job.
I had to restrain myself from underlining passages upon passages. I do not want to give this book back. It's that good.

This book has completely changed the way I job search for the better. Alexa's advice is invaluable and her templates and real life examples have helped transform my CV into something I'm much prouder of.
Still making my way through the task lists and this book will no doubt be revisited countless times over the next few months as I attempt to break into the publishing industry in the midst of COVID-19!

Extremely useful for job etiquette and for giving job seekers a concise plan and steps to follow. It's often easy to feel lost and overwhelmed while searching for a job (ah! the dread, the terror) and it's nice to have a reference book to hold your hand. Not four stars just because I found the first part slightly slow, but I believe it's a valid resource and a must-have for entry level job seekers.

October 26, 2021job searching sucks but this made me fell more okay with it, i’m a little more confident that i can get the job i want. i dont know how to phrase things still, and a lot of the templates are suited to people who are a little more experienced and i need to figure out my skill set but that last one is on me no one else. anyway yeah i’d lend this to someone stuck

Cannot recommend enough!! Perfect for anyone who is fresh out of university and are feeling a bit lost. This book gave me so much more hope and confidence. Alexa has a way with words, she’s witty and relatable, I left every reading session feeling more inspired and motivated to kick goals.

#ENTRYLEVELBOSS is step-by-step guide for job seekers that includes all the tips needed to get hired in this age with today's tools. Each steps are explained in straight-forward and relatable manner, backed with examples and templates for resume, cover letters and networking emails. There's even an actionable and manageable task list at the end of every steps. They're not abstract stuff that I would ended up just forgetting later.
It also explained about several incorrect beliefs about how employment works and what hit me the most was how the concept of 'official experience' is false, as it is a concept that I actually have been guiltily believing all this while. Because it's doesn't matter how you got your skills, what matters is that you took your own time to develop it.
It was a really useful read for me and I still re-read it from time to time in my process of job seeking. Definitely recommended for anyone who needs help in looking for a job.
