Casey doesn’t have much luck in the dating department, so when her girlfriends ditch their girls only weekend for a couple’s retreat, she's forced to take desperate measures.

Refusing to be the only single one, she does what any quick-thinking girl would do:

She lies.

It was almost too easy hiring a stranger to pretend to be her hot, rich, successful boyfriend. What she didn’t plan on was him being hot, successful, and way too much trouble for her liking.

Jim was in a slump in his everyday life. He was bored and needed something to spice up his life. Accepting a gig to play the perfect boy toy was not what he had in mind, but it was too good to turn down.

What he didn't plan for was the smokin’ little spitfire who hired him. It’s a con, a job, a fraud. But the more she's in his presence, the more he realizes she may be more than just a ruse.

Three days at a lake house.

Two strangers who cause a lot of mayhem.

One little lie.

Lake Redstone by J.D. Hollyfield is a standalone romantic comedy! Oh man did this book make me laugh out loud SO MANY times! There were moments where I had to physically put my iPad down because I was laughing so hard! If you are a fan of romcoms like The Virgin Romance Novelist, The Chocolate Lovers series, and The Wild Ones series by CM Owens this is a must read for you! I promise, you will be giggling the whole way though!

That being said, this book follows the fake relationship trope. Our heroine Casey feels sort of like the 5th wheel in her friendships as her best friends are are happily married. Then to make matters worse what's supposed to be a girls only trip turns into a couple trip. So what does Casey do? She tells a little white lie to her friends and hires someone to be her fake boyfriend for the weekend.

Enter JIM Bob. Or, just JIM. He's nothing like she was expecting- handsome, sweet, and totally into her despite their little lie. And the feeling he brings to her heart? Totally unexpected! But you can't help it when it comes to intense connections and chemistry and these two have it.

Unfortunately, since Jim is starting to develop real feeling for his violent fake GF he wants to tell everyone that their relationship was a farce. Casey is too afraid to admit it though and it just may be the nail in the coffin for them. What's a girl to do? You'll have to read and find out!

If you are looking for a book that will have you laughing uncontrollably for HOURS then this is the book for you! I am continuously impressed with Hollyfield's stories but this may be my favorite one yet! The only reason I knocked it down a half star is because I felt like I needed a tiny bit more in the epilogue. You may agree with me if you read it!

A super fun fake dating story. Casey needed a date for the annual girl's weekend which turned into a couples retreat so she hires someone as a stand-in. Shenanigans, laughs, sexy time, thrills, and off the wall antics occur over 72-hours between Jim and Casey. If you are looking for something light, fun, and sexy this is the book for you.

This specific video review will be included in the September 2019 wrap-up.

Maybe I'm the wrong age for this one?? The blurb was great, rom-com, Tick. Fake boyfriend for the weekend, Tick. 30 something characters, Tick. That's where my ticks stopped. Except for the actual writing - that also gets a Tick (so it gets 2 stars). The characters - especially the heroine - are acting out like 30 is the 'new' 15! So far at half way in, she's gotten drunk, done stupid things, passed out - rinse, repeat. Really not my idea of a pleasant read and I didn't get why it was funny. So I sent it back to the KU store. Sigh.

'Sundays Are For Hangovers' was really good, so I guess it's just hit and miss with some books. I will try more by this author.

***4 ‘Beautiful Disaster’ Stars***

I love a good romcom, I do, but this one may take the cake on the crazy OTT situations that these characters went through. Some had me cracking up, some had me rolling my eyes and there were a couple that had me going WTF?? BUT after a bit of a slow start for me, I was totally all in on the crazy ride that Casey, Jim and the rest of the crew took me on and really, REALLY wished there had more words to read after ‘The End’ because I wanted to spend just a little more time with all of them and see where the future took them.

Casey, I really liked her. I did. The woman is sweet, caring, slightly volatile *smirk* with just enough crazy to keep me on my toes, but man she had her OTT moments. It was a 50/50 split on the ones I was totally on board with and ones I wasn’t, but it was easy to like the woman. Jim is a sweetheart. He’s got this laid back go with the flow vibe and mix that up with charm, sweetness and good dose of snark that made it so easy to fall for the guy.

Their journey is definitely a rocky one, especially at the start ~ though things don’t truly smooth out until the end between them ~ but the chemistry between them is undeniable. Despite being strangers, they saw each for who they were and wanted more, even if one was more reticent when it came to admitting it. The big blowout was expected and messy and I was definitely #teamjim, but I loved how it all worked out for them in the end.

This was a crazy ride. A fun one, but craycray to the extreme. That’s really all there is to say about it. So if you love your RomCom a little OTT when it comes to the characters personalities and the situations they find themselves in and are down for a little bromancing being mixed in with your romance, then this is a definite must read!

First things first; I love the cover of this book!
This story is fast paced and hilarious. Like the previous books of J.D. Hollyfield’s that I have read, I loved this story.
I found the writing style easy to follow, the characters loveable and the storyline enjoyable.
Casey doesn’t have any look when it comes to dating. To be honest, she doesn’t have any interest in relationships. When her and her friends annual girls trip arrives, they announce a change in plan. With her friends now bringing their husbands, Casey needs a fake boyfriend. Finding Jim at the last minute was supposed to be a stroke of luck. The problem is, Jim doesn’t seem to listen and Casey sees that her lies are going to unravel. Although Jim annoys her, Casey cannot help but be attracted to her fake boyfriend. Although Jim doesn’t need the money from the fake dating plan, he is in a slump. Bored of his everyday life, he accepts the boyfriend gig and gets more than he bargained for.
This story had me laughing from page one. I didn’t stop laughing throughout the entire story.

Casey and Jim ( or Jim-Bob or just plain Bob) are a great pair.... they are fun and steamy all at the same time.
Casey was going on a weekend away with her best friends and their spouses. She was in a bind when she lied to them and said she had a boyfriend and that he would be coming.... so what is a girl to do? Why put an add out there trying to find a "boyfriend" who could work cheap...LOL What she got...was quite the surprise...
These two make falling in love painful, fun, silly and sexy. I would recommend this read to those who love a good Rom-Com.

This is the most fun read I’ve enjoyed in a minute. Ms. Hollyfield is a master of rom-com and embraces a good time and solid love story and meshes them together perfectly! I had so much fun reading this. I adore all books from JD and this one is no exception. Jim for the win!!

Original review: A Novel Glimpse

4.5 Stars
Lake Redstone is one of my favorite books of the summer. It’s a fake relationship romantic comedy that could easily be a movie — I seriously spent time thinking about which actor would play what character before I went to bed last night.

In Lake Redstone, single Casey’s much-needed girls trip to some place like Mexico turns into a couples trip to the lake. To avoid feeling like a reject, Casey puts up an ad for a fake boyfriend for the weekend. She has no idea she’s about to meet the guy of her dreams. Jim thought Why not? when he saw Casey’s ad. The worst thing that could happen would be that he could end up in a body bag. He’s pleasantly surprised by Casey, but also wonders just how crazy this beautiful woman is that she has to hire a boyfriend for the weekend.

J.D. Hollyfield’s writing sparkled in Lake Redstone. Her brand of humor is what set this book apart from other fake romance contemporaries. It was funny and sometimes bordered on ridiculous, but in the best way. I loved that she gave me both Casey and Jim’s point of views because knowing what both of them were thinking made the romance even stronger.

Casey the perfect hot mess. She had nothing but everything going for her all at once. Casey was the wild child of her group who enjoyed her life, but also felt like a failure when all her friends were thriving. I loved how her imperfections were what drew Jim to her.

Jim was a great surprise — to both Casey and myself. He fit in with her and her friends so easily. There wasn’t an awkwardness or anything of just having met these people. He also had a lot in common with Casey, and I loved how their relationship didn’t feel like instant love because of how well they could understand each other.

Back to those friends… I want to be in their friend group! They were so much fun! They were all so different and each had their own piece of crazy going on, but they were tight and really cared about each other. I especially loved Jim and Mick’s bromance. Gosh, it couldn’t get much better than that. Seriously, make this movie so I can see this bromance!

I just really loved this book so much! I want everyone who likes a good fake relationship romance to read it. The only thing I hesitated over while reading this book was that the end wrapped up a little too conveniently, but I still didn’t hate that. It was actually really cute.

Oh my... this book! What am I suppose to say about Lake Redstone? JD Hollyfield just rocks. Really, do I need to say more? The way she writes her stories make it impossible to stop! Casey has to be one of her craziest characters. I mean, talk about a hot mess!! She is one with the mess! There were times that she went way over her level of asinine. I'd think, is this girl even real?!?! That's right, she isn't, but Hollyfield's got you so conflicted that you're thinking these characters are your besties and you're wondering where your invite for the girls weekend went? It must have been lost in the mail. You can totally hang with crazy... be one with crazy!! Ok, so you get that... these ladies are my spirit animals and I'm bummed my invite was lost.

However, Jim was just what Casey needed to level her out a bit. Although I'm not saying he's totally sane... he did agree to this mess, after all. Let me just say, Lake Redstone pulsed with their chemistry... the steam was filtering out during their meet up and all throughout. I was nearly as obsessed with the secondary characters as I was with the two main characters.

The best thing about this book is JD Hollyfield's ability to give us so much in one little book. Yes, the majority of Lake Redstone is a romantic comedy but Hollyfield goes above and beyond. Her storytelling is irresistibly charming, the characters so fun-witted. They might be stuck in outer space but at least their upbeat and possibly a bit overwhelming. Jim adds this realness to the story that none of the other characters being to the pages. There's definitely some heat and charm at this delicious slow burn. I was a more shocked at the bit of tension or suspenseful feeling added in. I'm beyond tickled!! 5 full stars from me!

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

Anytime I read a Hollyfield book I know I am about to get treated to an epic romance with a delightful cast and friendships/relationships that give me the warm and cozies (even if some of them take me on an emotional rollercoaster first). Sometimes I swear she is basing these characters on her own family and friends which just makes me want to share margaritas with her whilst attempting to come up with a catch phrase for a koozie.
I had so much fun reading Lake Redstone, I didn't want it to end. Casey and Jim-Bob brought all my swirly-girly bits to life with their shared connection. Eventhough they know absolutely nothing about the other, somehow they fit together effortlessly. Well...maybe not completely effortlessly since Casey worked so hard to keep her top on and even harder to stay in her land of denial where she thinks she will not be accepted by the ones she hold near and dear. And let me tell you about these near and dear! The funniest, friendliest, most compatible group of shenanigans they were! Their love and affection come off the pages with their easy banter even with all the ball-busting they each receive.
I give this book five glorious stars because it has enough humor and Nirvana to outweigh any outlandish events that take place and it gave me a hankering for some seltzers. Cant wait to see what JD will dish out next.

Ohmygosh...I am a HUGE fan of J.D.'s and have read almost all of her books and never thought she'd be able to top my favorite book (My So Called Life), as this one has held my heart for a long time but I think she did it with this one. This one pulls out all the stops and has it all...the humor which I expect from her, the sass is on a whole new level in this one, the slow burn, the frustration, the happily ever after as it's meant to be and expected from this amazing author...she even adds suspense to this one with the house on Bunker Hill. You couldn't ask for anything more in this easy to read summer rom-com. I got completely lost in this book and didn't want to come up for air until I was done. It kept me turning those pages and staying glued to them. No mind wandering here. I was so invested in Casey and Jim as well as Poppy, Mick, Katie, Jerry, June and Jason...you too will fall in love with these characters and wish they were your best friends. What starts out as a lie turns into so much more and you'll be glad you came along for the weekend at the lake. It doesn't hurt that J.D.'s writing is so freaking fantastic that she can paint this whole weekend and all the characters so vividly in your mind that you do actually feel like you are there right along with them.

Oh my gosh this book was incredible.. This was the first book that i've read from J.D. Hollyfield and it won't be my last. If you love Romantic Comedy and the Fake Relationship trope you need to pick up this book.

Casey our heroine is honestly a hot mess, she's funny, sarcastic and pretty violent and the only single person in her group of friends. She doesn't want to go on their vacation now that her friends have decided to bring husbands on their girls trip so she puts up a ad online to look for a fake boyfriend to join her for the weekend where we meet our hero Jim or in other words Jim-Bob. He was downright swoony, sexy and hilarious.

These two were so amazing with their chemistry, sexual tension and banter. Not only did I love this couple but their amazing group of friends had me laughing out loud with some of the crazy antics they get up to. I just fell in love with this book so much and I really hope we get more of this crazy group of friends in the future.

The only thing I'm sad about is I wish the epilogue was a smidge longer. Come on you can't leave the ending like that. Bonus material? :)

Definitely read this book I can't recommend it enough x

I ended the weekend by binging, Lake Redstone by JD Hollyfield. I have been reading every release Hollyfield has had since I met her at an Ohio signing a few years ago and she has yet to disappoint me. Lake Redstone was no different. It may even be one of my favorites.

Firstly, nothing makes me love a book more than relatable characters and Hollyfield can write them! I loved the heroine, Casey. I felt her on a spiritual level, especially her violent side. She might just be my spirit animal. Ha! And then Jim, you just can't help, but to love him. Not to mention the side characters. When you fall in love with like, eight people all in one book, you know the character are amazing.

Lake Redstone is the ultimate test of friendship and self-contentment through one hell of a weekend retreat. This book was hilarious and swoony. There were moments where I laughed so hard, I almost had tears. And the swoon was sweet enough to buckle the knees of the strongest woman.

Must read romcom of 2019!

After the first couple of pages, I was wanting to drink a margarita and change my ringtone to Paradise City. That pretty much set the tone for this highly amusing RomCom.

This story was fun, like one big party, with very likable characters and a cute love story thrown in.

The group of friends were hilarious and fun and loyal. They made me want to be their friends and hang out with them.

Casey...so sassy, loves her spritzers, and a tad bit violent at times, but in a fun-loving-oh-shut-your-mouth kinda way...mostly. A beautiful disaster according to Jim.

Jim-Bob/Just-Jim is a sexy, go with the flow kinda guy. Yet he has a big heart and he falls hard. The way he and Casey got together was entertaining, and I loved watching the weekend getaway unfold.

Filled with alcoholic shenanigans, snort-giggle inducing scenes, and a bromance to rival Timberlake & Fallon, this story was very enjoyable for me.

I loved this book! It's very original and kind of crazy. People around me kept looking at me weird because I kept laughing out loud. Casey is a total violent mess. Which makes it different since it's rare to find a book where the heroine doesn't have it together. She makes you question if you even like her some times, but then her sense of humor and her vulnerability has you cheering her on. Jim is an amazing roll with the punches (literally) type of guy. And he manages to be enchanted by all of Casey's disaster because he is patient enough to wait for all her potential to bloom. He treats her like an equal and with honesty. Ironic, since from the moment they met the lies kept growing. You just can't help to fall for him!

The bromance, the kicking, the lay back attitude, the friends, the koozies, the running for their life, the competitive behavior, all of it makes this story highly entertaining and fun.

5 Beautiful Disaster Stars

Lake Redstone by J.D. Hollyfield is a standalone romantic comedy. This was a LOL fun read for me. I wasn't sure about Casey at the start I wasn't sure if I'd love her or find her annoying but ended up finding her sweet, caring, slightly volatile and crazy to top it off. After being invited on a girls weekend away that turns into a couple thing, Casey is no way going on her own. She decided to put an ad up for a fake boyfriend for the weekend. Jim decides it could be fun and answers said ad! Turns out Jim is just what Casey needs.

This was a such a fun read, the chemistry and sexual tension between Jim and Casey is of the charts and I love how they connected with each other. I also loved this crew of people they worked and made the book great. I'd love to see more of them in the future.

It's been a hot minute since I read a book from this author. I'm now sitting here trying to figure out why I have just been one-clicking and not reading them right away. This book was fun!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters and plot were written is such a fun and exciting way. There was plenty of steam and angst. I didn't want to stop reading.

This book is full of some really funny shenanigans. I laughed at so many parts of this one. Then there was that one scene. It fit the story because of its outrageousness. But then on the other hand, I questioned if it fit the story because it was so dark and outrageous. In the end, I decided, even though it was a huge turn, it totally fit the silliness of this story.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I am totally on team Redstone. I was disappointed we didn't get to read the details of the bombs in the epilogue.

Casey didn’t know where her life was going but was definitely looking forward to the annual girls trip until the unthinkable happens. Casey now needs to come up with a new plan and that is where the lie comes in. Jim responds and the chemistry is immediate between them even though Casey doesn’t want to admit to it. Will Casey be able to continue to lie or will she lose the one thing she longs for the most?

I really loved this book. I loved both characters personalities and how they played off one another. This book definitely had some laugh out loud moments which I definitely loved. I also loved the friendships and connections throughout this book.

Right, I'm just going to come out and say it - this felt a bit like the gang from scooby doo at times, with some of the situations that they found themselves in! Now, that's not a bad thing at all, because the humorous element to these added an extra dimension to the story overall. However, one in particular was left a bit like a loose end, and I found myself wondering what the outcome was.

That said, the relationship aspect of this story made me giggle at times, whilst at other times, just rooting for them to sort it all out.

And the ending? Perfect for this couple.

Lake Redstone is a swoony, sexy and hilarious rom-com! Casey and Jim begin their fake relationship as strangers, but they get to know one another quickly when they jump into a weekend trip with Casey’s friends at the lake. Jim is 100% committed to putting on a believable show and quickly figures out how to keep Casey on her toes. They go round and round with flirty banter and have insane chemistry, and they’re a joy to watch as they stumble their way to happily ever after. The cast of secondary characters adds to the shenanigans and nonstop humor, and you’ll giggle and smile your way from beginning to end of Lake Redstone.

This book was a book rich in comedy! So many laugh out loud moments! And it had such a fun and unique start...girl sets up an ad for a last minute boyfriend for hire for a weekend trip and that is just the start of the LOLs. The fun dynamic of this group of characters made me feel like I was spending the weekend with them! The story did go from romantic comedy to borderline slapstick comedy. The story got weird in the middle...one particular scene really stuck with me and not in a good way. But after that the story went back to the romcom feel and it ended on a great note. This was definitely a fun story to read!

I listened to this book on Audible. I was intrigued by the concept of this book and started listening to see where the author took it. I cannot emphasize the craziness of the FMC Casey enough, but that craziness is one of the things that actually attracted Jim (the MMC) to her. This story had a great group of characters in wild adventures that frequently made me snort laugh. I loved how easily the group incorporated Jim and even though most of the story took place over the course of a weekend, I was fully on board with how quickly the relationships moved. I did spend a decent amount of time cringing due to secondhand embarrassment, but the journey was worth it.

What a breath of fresh air this book was! It’s a story with aspects that most of us have probably experienced but not often read. It has everything I love in a story; humor, suspense/mystery, emotion, and a ton of hotness! It reminded me of younger days when my friends and I would go camping for the weekend and have the times of our lives. Something crazy would always happen but it never stopped us from going back the next year! If a book ends up making me want the characters to be a part of my life I consider that a win! Yet another fictional world I’d love to join!
