Rapunculus Book One: And So It Begins

Rate this book
An aging witch and her beautiful daughter.

Two young men.

A whole lot of trouble.

All that the elderly witch Urdhr wants is a kind companion who’d help her around the house. Is that really too much to ask? She’s a frail old woman who’s been working hard all her life and paid her taxes regularly, and she’s living in the forest all by herself. Surely she deserves help?

With good companions being so difficult to find – and she tried, she really did – Urdhr does what any sensible witch would she uses her magic to create the perfect companion for herself, a daughter named Rapunculus. However, while Rapunculus is beautiful, Urdhr is saddened to discover that her wonderful child doesn’t have a functioning heart, so she’s unable to feel either love or happiness.

And that is only the beginning of a strange new life, for after a while, Rapunculus’s beauty attracts the attention of two young Circium, a very handsome prince with narcissistic personality disorder, and his morbidly depressed stable boy, Fritz.

But where could that attraction possibly lead?

Chaos and hilarity ensue, along with a series of terrifying and silly misadventures in this satirical take on classic fairy tales.

And this is just the first installment… More hilarity is coming.

I bought the book for my daughter, who loves fairytales. Just out of curiosity I turned few pages, and Arthur has done such a great job, that I got hooked, and read the whole story in one go. This book reminds me of Grimm’s fairy tales and felt the same owe, that I felt 20 years ago when I was reading the Grimm stories.

The story revolves around Urdhr, an old witch, and her daughter Rapunculus, whom Urdhr creates from her magic. Although she was born as a beauty, sadly she doesn’t have a heart, making her unable to love. Things got complicated when prince Circium is attracted to Rapunculus. Will Rapunculus, the cold-hearted beauty be able to live Circium?

The author has done a great job with his masterful storytelling. It is beautifully written in simple language, but the writing style is so descriptive that I felt like watching a Disney movie. My daughter has finished reading it twice and now eagerly awaits to read the next book “An Unexpected Road Trip.”

Urdhr had lived most of her life deep in the woods alone so that she could concentrate on her magic. However this was not quite so good once she was getting on in years and so she set about finding a housekeeper/companion with mostly hilarious results. After creating a wish child who’s outwardly was perfect and was the best housekeeper Urdhr had ever had she realised that her wish child had one fatal flaw that meant she would never be the companion Urdhr wanted. With the help of her with friends Urdhr sets off to find a way to fix her wish child once and for all.
While Urdhr is away the wish child starts to do and learn things that make her think and function differently and a chance encounter with a runaway servant starts her on an adventure.
This was at times very funny and amusing although the abrupt ending was a bit disappointing even though there is obviously going to be more books to follow up
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh, my Gosh, Love love LOVE! (I don't think the author sells it on Amazon anymore but pretty sure it's on Nook.) So well written, really great character building, too. I love that some of the main characters are old ladies! Had me in stitches throughout, but there are a few moments that get pretty deep, too. A fun blend of fairytale fantasy/horror genres with comedy, not to mention the artwork is INCREDIBLE. Do yourself a favor: pour your very fine self a cup of tea, snuggle up in your favorite chair, and fall into this book.
