-- Cherringham is a serial novel à la Charles Dickens, with a new mystery thriller released each month. Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.
-- For fans of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series, Lilian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who series, Caroline Graham's Midsomer Murders, and the American TV series Murder She Wrote, starring Angela Lansbury.
-- Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), have been writing together since the mid 90's, creating content and working on projects for the BBC, Disney Channel, Sony, ABC, Eidos, and Nintendo to name but a few. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and - most recently - the successful crime fiction series Cherringham. Now into its second season of 12 novellas, Cherringham is popular around the world and has been adapted as a series of audiobooks in Germany.
The huge Chandelier of Bell Hotel falls and almost kills some of the guests, Jack and Sarah are called in to see into it but they end up investigating a 100 year old murder. This series did not let me down, still funny, captivating and brain teasing, a little paranormal activity was welcome!
Five stars because it was so fun. The mystery...well, it kind of isn't one. There are questions to be answered, but it's not their usual case. But you can tell the writers just had a blast with it, and for that... well done you!
Ghost of a Chance: Cherringham 19 Chronological order recommended but not necessary
In A Nutshell: Murdered Freddy is haunting the Bell, the local hotel where somebody murdered him. Basil hosts an annual dinner on the anniversary of Freddy's death. It draws customers with a taste for macabre mystery and ghosts. Then the chandelier crashes on the customers, and it's not one of Basil's ghost tricks. So, whodunit? Enter Jack and Sarah.
The Protagonist(s):Take one hard-boiled former New York City Detective retired to Cherringham England (Jack) and one Brit design techie divorcee who fled home to Cherringham (Sarah), and you have our protagonists. The professional and amateur in the sleepy Oxford countryside. It's an unusual but addictive pairing.
It has all the hallmarks of a classic mystery with the quintessential eccentric Brits. A sleepy village that is so well developed I want to go there for tea. And there are delightful, fun plots that hold the reader's attention.
Must read, easy read, good fun. And this one has a touch of the paranormal. Love cosies, and you will enjoy Cherringham.

My rating system (* = star) 0* Could not finish this book (waste of time) 1*Finished the book but didn't like it not fulfilled 2* Finished the book it was okay. 3* A good read worth your time. 4* An excellent read often with a novel concept or unusual plot. 5* A magnificent read. A prominent example of the genre.
It appears that the butler was murdered about a hundred years ago and has been haunting the building ever since, despite it having been turned into a family hotel which has fallen on hard times. Jack and Sarah get asked to investigate by the elderly hotel owner after a nearly devastating unexplained incident during the yearly demonstration by the ghost whisperer. Good sleuthing, surprising twists, unusual red herrings, and interesting characters round out this fun episode.
Love this idea of a series given in short bursts that are just the right size as well as so much more flexible than a whole novel! The ongoing sleuthing involves a retired and widowed older NYPD homicide cop who is finding life in the English countryside a fair antidote to his mourning, and a local recently divorced woman who has returned to her hometown with her children. They make a good sleuthing pair. Voice actor Neil Dudgeon has been an excellent asset to my listening pleasure, making sure that I know who's talking while I do mindless things.
A local hotel is hosting a ghost evening featuring a 100 year old ghost named Freddy. Freddy was murdered in his attic room at the hotel and his murderer was never discovered. Dressed in Edwardian garb and enjoying their dinner, the attendees listen as ghost expert Basil tells Freddy's story. Everything is fun and scary until the huge chandelier crashes into the dining table, shattered crystal going everywhere. No one can understand why the chandelier fell so Jack and Sarah are asked to investigate.
An entertaining ghost story with an ending that is a first for Jack and Sarah. Not going to spoil it for you but let’s say that Sarah is pleasantly amazed when Jack can still surprise her.
Nineteen shorts in, and I still love this series. They are a great break from larger books and a pleasant way to spend a few hours without making a heavier commitment, for those times when your mind is wandering, and you can’t focus on anything but a short story.
Oh my goodness, such a cute one! I liked how the author took a step back from the usual outline and did something a little special for Halloween. Great story!
A good book to listen too when you clean the house. It gives you ”Midsomer murders” wibes. It is fun to try to figure out how the guilty person is. Jack is a retired cop from US, Sarah is a singel mom and they solves crime together. This one was about a mystery.
I have once again fun by listening to this short cozy mystery. 2019/August/2 - 3-star rating Good and funny, even if a bit short, story. About murdered ghost Freddy and how Jack and Sarah found out who killed him. I enjoyed this book in audiobook edition.
