For 150 years the magnificent Scarlett Hall has stood proud. However, the secrets it holds threaten to destroy it and the family who lives within.

At the age of one and twenty, Widow Isabel Barnet has returned to seek refuge in her family’s ancestral home of Scarlett Hall. Having experienced heartbreak and vowing to never love again, Isabel has now resigned herself to minding her younger sisters and forever remaining alone. That is until one day when her mother makes a request…

Laurence Redbrook, Duke of Ludlow, feels half a man compared to others; the limp he received after a tragic accident is proof of that. Understanding that the ton whispers behind his back—and no woman would ever view him with interest—he remains alone at his estate. That is, until an important letter arrives requesting his aid.

As Isabel and Laurence are joined into a marriage of convenience, Isabel begins to search for a way to escape from both a man she does not love and the secrets in her heart that threaten to destroy her. And Laurence must decide if the love he feels for Isabel is enough for her to see him as the man he wishes to be rather than the burden she is forced to carry.

Whispers of Light is the exciting first book in the new Secret of Scarlett Hall series. Each novel is filled with mystery and secrets that will keep you guessing with every turn of the page to see if this hero and heroine receive their happily ever after.

I feel really bad to give this book only two stars, because I liked the hero very much and though the plot was not original, it definitely had some potential. But my main complaint is that it seems this author has no idea about the regency era, the customs, language or traditions and how people behaved. The language spoken could be happening in a contemporary romance. Heroin is the daughter of a baron but she never had a maid, because her father wanted to save money. seriously?? And where does the story happen? Her state, his state and everyone else’s is so close that they commute daily and at the same time they go shopping everyday and from the shopping description it is a very big town. One day they are having a picnic and she asks the hero whom do the cottages in the distance belong to and he says he doe not know? What? If he is the duke those are probably his tenants and tenants from a neighbor landlord or from a village.... And the heroin, although kind and intelligent did not behave like a lady. She was always holding a glass of wine in hand. She would go to the garden everyday carrying her bottle and drink too much. Seriously? I wish the author had done a better research before writing this book.

Isabel is a young widow whose family is in debt. Laurence is a lonely duke with a limp and plenty of money. Isabel's mother arranges for them to marry, thus solving everyone's immediate issues. But once Isabel and Laurence are married, their super expected personal issues prevent them from a happy union. Isabel's last marriage was unhappy and so she expects this one to be. Laurence feels guilt that his parents died while they were taking a carriage ride together. Eventually they confess to each other and emotionally heal. Frankly this book is written with such stilted dialog, trite characterization, and so little in the way of historical accuracy or plot that by the end I was rooting against the main characters.

Scarlett Hall had been the home to the Lambert family for over 150 years. Now a debt collector is calling demanding what is owed in only two months’ time, and they may lose the manor. Lady Eleanor Lambert had to do something about this – her children’s future depended on it!

Mrs. Isabel Barnet, formerly Miss Isabel Lambert, had only been married a short time to her love. But now she is a widow, feeling almost that her life is over. She returned home to Scarlett Hall to mourn for her husband, not knowing that she will be asked to make a sacrifice for the family. To keep their home, they need to pay their overdue debts. Her mother has noticed the looks a certain man gives Isabel, and he could get them out of debt. With a heavy heart, Lady Eleanor asks Isabel to marry this man, even though she does not know or love him.

Laurence Redbrook, Duke of Ludlow, feels like half a man since the accident that caused his limp. The Ton laughs at him now, and he has been lonely. When Lady Eleanor asks for his help, he agrees to marry Isabel. Will Isabel accept these circumstances and agree to marry him? Can anything more come from this marriage of convenience? Can she see him as a man who loves her and not as a burden she has to tolerate?

The story was well-written and the author did an admirable job of evoking the feelings each character was experiencing. It allowed the reader to more easily take the story to heart and feel for the characters. Will this be a tragic tale, or can real love and respect grow out of the situation? Grab your copy and share the family’s attempt to turn a potential loss into something so much better for all of them.

I just found this depressing. it all wrapped up in a happy bow, but it took a long time to get there with what just seemed like pages and pages of the main characters being all unhappy and listless and miserable.

I enjoy romance and this book did not disappoint me. I was pretty sure of the plot from the beginning but the journey to the end that I anticipated was very enjoyable. Not sure if I will read any more of the 9 books in this series but I might.

DNF @ 65%. Very little chemistry between the lead characters. Storyline wasn’t interesting enough to keep me invested.

I think the biggest issue I had with this story was the overuse of the adverb “However.” I don’t know how many times it was used, but I swear had I been able to see the physical book, the pages, I’m sure it was used several times per page. When it comes to adverbs, I think only sometimes are they needed; it depends on what’s being said. See, even if that previous sentence, I couldn’t stop from including an adverb (sometimes). Still, many of the sentences that used however in the story could have easily been rewritten to forgo its use. Overall, the story was pretty good.

Did anyone else feel the model for the cover doesn't work? I don't know if it's her hairstyle or expression or what, but no.

I thought the narrator did a great job! I’m always a fan of the English/British accent, so no complaints there.

Questions/Comments:

I thought it strange that considering Isabel’s mother didn’t want to force her daughter to marry Lawrence, and knew that she didn’t want to remarry, that she wouldn’t have spoken to her more about the situation beforehand. I wondered why Isabel's mother never thought of having one of Isabel's sisters marry Lawrence. It's not like that wasn't common back then.

Not surprisingly I couldn’t stand Harriet. For some reason as soon as I heard her name, I knew she was going to be an unlikable character. Even if Lawrence felt it was his fault his parent’s died, the fact he let Harriet talk down and cruelly to him in front of others made no sense to me. He was always worried about people thinking less of him and, obviously, her personality wouldn’t have helped.

With the “however” issue as mentioned above, Isabel constantly talking about losing her heart off to Lawrence (or something similarly worded), it was overdone. Then at the end when she tells Lawrence that she was in love with him. Huh? I could have seen her saying she cared greatly for him, wasn’t sure if it was love, but still not wanting to admit her feelings for him. There was nothing like that though.

When Lawrence asked Isabel if she liked his sister, I get that she wanted to make things easier for Lawrence but, at the same time, why did Isabel feel she had to overdo it, saying that she’d missed Harriet when it was time for her leave?

I wasn’t a fan of how long it took to reveal why Lawrence blamed himself for his parents’ death. And leaving the reader to believe that Isabel loved her husband throughout their marriage, only to be told she hadn’t prior to his death, sort of threw the story off for me and left me wondering why she acted as though her not wanting to express her feelings to Lawrence (not that she ever showed anything relating to love) was because of her love for her dead husband.

I received a free audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review.

Kind of dreadful

I try a lot of free or nearly free Kindle books. Some I forget instantly; some I search for others in the series to buy or borrow from the library. I almost never review one. I gave Whispers of Light two stars because I did finish it, but I consider it generous. The story line is familiar - beautiful young widow marries duke to save the family home and, against her will, falls in love. The problem is that nothing rings true. The duke is a recluse because he has a limp from a childhood carriage accident that kills his parents. A limp keeps a handsome, kind and wealthy duke out of society? Really? Oh, and even as an adult he feels guilty for his parents’ death because the accident happened while they were taking him to school. Really? His bride eschews love because her first husband was a drunk, gambling cheater. Well, reasonable, but she blames her loving, upright mother for losing all the family money in the year since her father died without once suspecting that her father who turns out to have been a drunken gambler may have had something to do with it. Really? Then byw (beautiful young widow)becomes an accomplished artist after a few months of lessons from husband because she suddenly paints “from the heart”. Really? Oh, and in the epilogue, they all go to London for byw’s sisters’ coming out season and byw invites loving mother to stay with her and the duke so she won’t be lonely in her own London home while the younger sisters enjoy the social whirl. Unchaperoned in a Regency novel? Really?
Yes, really.

I wanted to like this so bad but it didn't really happen.

The writing style was a bit odd and boring, the story itself also underwhelming.

The characters constantly flip flop around to the point of annoyance:

Last but not least I guess Laurence in general has next to no personality and the heroine is oftentimes dull

I had more to say about it while I was reading the book but now that I've finished it it's like it all went out the window because I just don't have the energy to even voice them anymore. So draining, so boring. Going back to it for more of a review just feels like I'd be wasting more of my time.

To marry again.
Isabel is living a woman worse dream married for only a short time she becomes a widow. Then she returns home to mourn her loss only to find out that do to financial concerns her mother wants her to marry again to a man of her mother’s choosing. Laurence is a man who the town gossip about not because he is a rake no because he has a limp. Lonely he agrees to marry Isabel. This book is the ups and downs they both face. Will Isabel be able to give her heart to Laurence? I enjoyed the characters the sister-in-law was a marvelous but horrible character. I found the book very entertaining. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

Strangely unputdownable...:)

I titled this review "strangely unputdownable" because the book really is... Nothing much happens in the story: Isabel is forced by her mother to marry Laurence who, on his part, agrees to the marriage because he believes he won't be able to marry anyone else otherwise... and he wants to save Isabel's family from being evicted from their own house... Each character hides secrets, but these are not "real" secrets or mysteries - no past murdres, no crimes, nothing of the kind - they are more burdens of traumas that they carry; there's no real villain, there are no unexpected twists, no runs and chases... and yet when you start listening you can't put it down. Maybe it's because of the slow pace of the story which allows us to get to know the two main characters so well, maybe because this lack of hurry means we do see how the relationship between the two main characters develops, how it slowly changes from friendship and gratitude into love. I am not sure all the reactions are psychologically believable (like is it possible to have a complete change of character overnight...?), but they somehow work in the story. So yes, the book IS strangely unputdownable...:)

The narration is really good. Ms Anderson reads well all the parts, male and female, and all the changes in the mood, in the emotional state of the characters are obvious and ring true. It's a really good interpretation of the story.

DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is dramatic and interesting. Laurence has been a recluse for most of his life because his injured leg was seen as a weakness by others. Isabel was living back in her childhood home after being widowed. Isabel's life revolved around her younger sisters because her mother was lost in her misery. She had let the estate get into a state that was impossible to get out of, and she was given two months to pay it off, or lose the house to the creditors. With no other recourse, Isabel's mother asked Laurence to pay off the debts, and in return he would marry Isabel. He agreed, so he paid the debts and asked Isabel to marry him. Isabel didn't want to marry him, but she did want to save her home, so she agreed. Laurence and Isabel got along well as friends, but Laurence gave Isabel time to adjust before things got personal. Then she realized that she might have some feelings for him, and everything went wrong from there. Laurence learns to not be so self conscious, or feel guilty about his parents death. Isabel learns that love does not always lead to heartache.

Clean light romance, with a hint of mystery

I liked this story a lot..only one thing I didn't like, so I'll say it first..last page is precursir to next book. Since I can't afford to buy the remaining books in the series, that tiny bit frustrated me. However, I'm immensely pleased to read a clean romance. The characters were warm & mysterious, with secrets finally revealed in the end. I would like to have known more about the Duke's business affairs, simply to add credence to the story & make it at least a bit "historical". But the focus was pretty much on Caroline & the mystery of her inability to love the very lovable Duke. I was cheering for the Duke to win her love. 😁 He reminded me in some ways of my own wonderful husband, giving & generous! Everyone will love this book, I think!

Scarlett Hall had been the home of the Lambert family for over 150 years. Lady Eleanor Lambert has to do something fast she is about to lose their large Estate, Scarlett Hall. Her daughter Isabel Barnet has just lost her husband and is back home, a grieving widow.

Her mother approaches Isabel and tells her, she has to marry Laurence Redbrook, Duke of Ludlow, in order to save Scarlett Hall. Laurence agreed to marry Isabel, he can help the family and the marriage will put him back into society circles again. Will this marriage turn into love for both of them?

This is the beginning of a good series. The characters were outstanding with personalitIes that fit the era. I loved all the characters. The old estate property was well defined, through the years. The family running out out money and needs help with an arranged marriage. I enjoyed reading this story.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

Overall, I liked the story and I am more at 3.5 stars. But, to me, it just seemed like it took a long time to get where it ultimately ended up. I did not find the actions of Harriet, MC Laurence Redbrook's sister, to be absolutely convincing. I also thought that the ultimate reveal regarding MC Isabel's marriage was odd given her behavior up to that point. And finally, it just seemed that MC Laurence was a bit to saintly at times - accepting of both his sister Harriet's and his wife's MC Isabel's behavior.

The narrator, Katherine Anderson, has a pleasant voice with a slight British accent. She did a nice job.

This was okay, but I did have a few issues with it. For one thing, Laurence was seriously wimpy which made it really difficult to like him. Then occasionally for no good reason, he'd suddenly start barking out demands and being unreasonable. It was out of character and not any more likeable than his abused puppy personality. Isabel was incredibly unfair to him at times, too. Laurence's sister's turnaround was also unbelievable. With all the drama, it was hard to see much romance between the two main characters. They seemed to spend more time avoiding each other than anything else.

Despite those things, the book was a good enough read (It's a clean romance, if you care about these things one way or the other), but it just wasn't a great read.

A sad but courageous tale

Two lonely and damaged souls who both have suffered and who now need a new beginning. That is basically the central theme of Whispers of Light by Jennifer Monroe.

I have mixed feelings about this character-driven romance. The story is a simple one, but the emotions within it are complicated. I liked the lead characters, Isabel and Laurence, except when they were unlikable. Thankfully, Isabel's siblings really helped to lighten this otherwise slow and sad tale. My last disappointment s was with the ending. It was sweet, but not very satisfying, and the epilogue was inserted to set up the next book about one of Isabel's siblings.

Content 411: This is a clean read. No swearing or sex.

Nicely done

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.

The writing is well done. The characters are interesting, some are abominable! I liked the descriptive writing very much.

This book follows the same plot that many romance books of the time follow: mystery, agony, fear, guilt, despair, and eventually love. The secrets have two functions. 1. Tear people apart, 2. Bind people together. We often do the wrong things for all the right reasons. Does that mean that we are all condemned or will we all, with faith, find that elusive happiness?

Laurence and isabel

Well written and intriguing story many headaches and secrets hidden away Laurence hidden away due to an accident when he was a young man which caused him to have a limp and leaving his parents dead Isabel once believing in love but then shattered by her first husband with the bad choices he made and blaming it on Isabel when characters made Isabel not to ever love again but Laurence us ever patience and the final paintings they painted said it all so glad they had their HEA but what comes next to Scarlett hall we shall see would highly recommend but just wished themselves a little more romance

“Whispers of Light” Secrets of Scarlett Hall, book 1
by Jennifer Monroe narrated by Katherine Anderson
I requested and received a copy of this audiobook from the narrator. And, I do feel so very lucky as this story was a captivating read. A story that shows how much our perceptions and experiences impact how we react in our here-and-now world. Note: the last minute leaves you with a teaser to the next book in the series, which at first put me off, but I got over it. Because Laurence & Isabel’s story was worth the read. Happy Reading ! !

Very glad I found this series

I really enjoyed this story. There was a lot of intensity to the emotional worlds of the main characters. The villains (or difficult people) had their oart and the difficult hand they each were dealt were of course part of the story, but it was more about how to grieve and heal each in particular first, even though their potential relationship was a guiding light. I am looking forward to reading all the other books, I just wished I had known I could buy the packaged sets (1-3 and 4-6) instead of buying one alone, but now I know (and so you do!).

Mixed feelings

If I had only read until chapter 25 I wouldn’t have given this book 4 stars, as I was quite annoyed by Isabel. However in the end you see the reason behind her actions. I just dont know if it would have been best to know beforehand, I understand the author’s intention on doing so but without knowing this the characters actions become frustrating, specially when Laurence’s attitude and feelings are the opposite. Just for the hero in this book it deserves the 4 stars.

This sweet and clean Regency romance with a lovely cover delves into the psychological background and secrets surrounding mother and daughter to ultimately convey the reasons behind their emotions and actions. Much resentment surrounds Isabella's forced marriage to a disabled Duke by her mother to save their manse. It isn't until one learns the character's backstory to finally reveal and understand the motives behind their actions for it all to make sense. Entertaining novel for those who enjoy delving into the psyche and secrets of the characters.
