Does it live up to the hype?! R.L. Stine has made They Call Me the Night Howler one of the most anticipated books of the year (for Goosebumps fans, anyway) thanks to a surprisingly impassioned campaign of calling it his best work in decades. This is unheard of coming from the author who famously shrugs at his oeuvre of children’s literature, and advises students in his MasterClass to not take writing so seriously.

Furthering the frenzy, Stine banned any substantive blurb for the book until release date to preserve the surprise. Fans have been fraught with speculation for months, dying to find out what could possibly be so brilliant about this 11th book from SlappyWorld.

Well — the wait is over!

As per usual, there are a number of twists and reverse-reverse twists to keep the pages surprising and unexpected. The ending is, of course, great. I won't agree with Stine because I think he's written a number of dazzling books in the last two decades, books far better than this one, but I will say it deserves a top seat in the SlappyWorld series thus far. Please Do Not Feed the Weirdo remains #1, though.

Several antagonistic entities have persisted over the history of Goosebumps: the Haunted Mask, Slappy the ventriloquist dummy, Monster Blood, and the Horrorland amusement park, to name a few. One of the newer villains to achieve recurring status is Dr. Maniac—introduced in 2008's Dr. Maniac vs. Robby Schwartz—and once again he is the bad guy in They Call Me the Night Howler!. Twelve-year-old Mason Brady is stoked that his parents are taking him to the Comic Book Characters Hall of Fame Museum. He wishes his ten-year-old sister Stella weren't tagging along, but Mason forgets his annoyance when he happens upon a man dressed as the Night Howler. The stranger insists he is the actual superhero, not an actor, and he's ready to retire because of the supervillain who continues to escape capture by him: Dr. Maniac. Is Mason willing to don the Night Howler's garb and assume his role as guardian of the community? Despite his reservations, Mason leaps at the chance. Is he capable of thwarting evildoers such as The Living Larva, Wreckage, The Juggler, and Dr. Maniac? We're about to find out.

The previous Night Howler agrees to train Mason, but warns that no one must ever learn his new secret identity. The superpowers are in the costume, and will disappear if Mason is revealed as the Night Howler. Fearful though he is of fighting violent criminals, Mason goes to his work with gusto, relying on the Night Howler's signature power: conjuring up dark clouds that can either make him invisible to onlookers or seize control of a villain's body. Arresting bad guys might even be easy...if not for Blue Strawberry, a super-villainess who appears wherever Mason shows up to fight crime, and rains hard, heavy pieces of fruit down on his head. One after another, supervillains elude the Night Howler thanks to Blue Strawberry. Mason despairs that he'll never live up to his title if he can't apprehend her, but there may be more to the story than he knows. Why is Blue Strawberry stalking him, and what is her weakness? Success or failure for the young new Night Howler rides on his ability to defeat this mysterious, persistent nemesis.

They Call Me the Night Howler! is a good concept, but the story makes little sense. Plot inconsistencies are rampant, and we're never told why actual superheroes hang out at the Comic Book Characters Hall of Fame. And why does Mason readily believe the Night Howler and Dr. Maniac are real? His total lack of skepticism strikes a false note. I'd consider rating They Call Me the Night Howler! one and a half stars; there are better Dr. Maniac books, but at least the "twists"—obvious as they are—can be entertaining. I also enjoyed the allusion on page fifty-one to Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series. R.L. Stine's halcyon days may have been behind him by 2020, but his Goosebumps books from that era are fun anyway.

So a few years ago I started They Call Me The Night Howler and I got to chapter three and a certain character popped up and I literally said "no" outloud and put the book away. This year I wanted to finish up a few of the Slappy World books and this one I decided to try agian. So one Saturday I was determined to get atleast halfway through the book and honestly the book got really engaging. Before I knew it I was totally invested. The character that I mentioned was an actor in the book and not the real deal ,so that helped but aside from that, the book was really fun and felt really different from your typical Goosebumps. The story starts off with this kid named mason going to a comic meusium hall of Fame with his family. Mason is obsessed with comics and his little sister mocks him for it, but the parents don't see it. Mason decides to ditch his sister and go exploring on his own when he stumbles upon a real super hero named the Night Howler ,a guy who can manipulate shadows and Howl's before a fight and that's actually pretty cool. The night howler is taking off his costume and is informing mason he plans on retiring, but after a little back and forth of mason trying to convince the Night Howler the world needs him . The Night Howler has none of it and tells mason if he thinks it's so easy he should do it and gives mason his costume. He tells him that the powers come from within the costume and he can't let anybody know his identity or he will lose his powers. He also informs him that other Night Howlers can know about each other's identity and if he refuses he can use a shadow to cloud his mind and make him forget. His missions will come from a text and this actually felt like an adult being on call from work, which I still experience to this day and it's great. Mason is trying to juggle being a kid and going on these missions and it honestly felt just like a typical superhero movie ,not to mention some of the funny/great supervillains, which include the quitter a guy who quits, wreckage a guy that wrecks things and one of the most intresting characters ,the Blue Strawberry who has the powers to make it rain fruit with many more villains including the one I mentioned at the beginning. He does show up eventually as the real deal and he's actually not that annoying. He was silly and not scary ,but not as bad as the previous books he appeared in. Eventually mason is having trouble caturing all of these villains and he keeps failing. Everytime he has one caught the Blue Strawberry appears to spoil his fun. So he's determined to capture her and prove he deserves the Night Howler costume. They Call Me The Night Howler is really fun and very engaging .I was really invested the only negatives I have for this book is it's not at all scary ,which isn't nessacarally a bad thing. There are a few pacing issues. His friend are wanting to make a horror movie and those scenes kinda slow it down. Also the ending was pretty bad. Other then that this was way better then I expected .I also want to give props to one of the twists in this book .I thought I knew what was going to happen ,but I'm glad Stine didn't go the predictable route. I give They Call Me The Night Howler a four out of five stars.

Review for “They Call Me the Night Howler!” by R. L. Stine

It’s the eleventh book in the “Goosebumps SlappyWorld” book series written by the bestseller author and master of horror and comedy, R. L. Stine. The story focuses on Mason Brady, a comic book fan whose life is about to change after meeting one of his idols. Will he be a superhero or will he just be a superzero?
The author attracts the readers through his simple writing style that can be easily understood. His unique technique allows them to take part in the unfolding story, deciding the characters’ fate and the ending.
The book is a portal to the world of comic books in the writer’s spooky humorous style. There are some characters that remind us of the Marvel and DC Universe where heroes save the world from villains.
Night Howler has a few similarities to Batman, Nightwing, Moon Knight and Raven due to his combat skills, the ability to create and manipulate shadows, fog the opponent’s mind and make him forget things, and the use of magic to camouflage himself. His alter ego reminds us of a grumpy Bruce Wayne and a mentor.
Dr. Maniac is an antagonist that appears in many Goosebumps books. He is the personification of evil, sneakiness, madness and unpredictability. Blue Strawberry is similar to the Scarlet Witch.
Unlike the Cryptkeeper from the “Tales from the Cryptkeeper” animated series that acts as a parent by teaching the viewers important lessons through each story he tells, Slappy doesn’t care about the characters’ fate. He introduces us into the story and often interrupts its course with his bragging.
The readers will have a scary and comical experience while finding friendship; thrills, fear, suspense, adventure, action, mystery, plot twist on each page of this frightastic novel. Along the plot, we will learn about assuming responsibility for what we do, curiosity, keeping a promise and a secret, the naivety of a child, knowing when to quit, repaying someone for his good deeds etc.
An issue discussed in the book is temptation because despite being only a boy, Mason gives into the temptation of taking two mantles that will be too much for him.
Along with Edgar Allan Poe, Chris Grabenstein, James Patterson, Beatrice Masini, Sir Steve Stevenson, J. K. Rowling, Sophie Audouin-Mamikonian and many others, Mr. Stine is the author who will forever be in his readers’ hearts and who revolutionized literature through his unique style and the world which he created. The Stephen King of Children’s Literature and the Master of Goosebumps are the perfect names for the author.
I recommend this book to readers 12+ because there are scenes that are scary and can’t be understood by younger readers.

I'll get to talk about this further in blog look at the Slappyworld series, but it'll be in Part 2 since the upcoming Part 1 will only cover the first 10 and Part 2 will come in when this series ends most likely. Since that'll be a while, I'll give the short version.

It's another comic/superhero story that goes more for the laughs but it wasn't quite as over the top and dumb compared to some of the others and it goes further into traditional hero stuff which actually made it more enjoyable to me. Once it got going, it was fun and flowed well enough and I just like their take on these kind of superhero stories.

My main problem is that it can bogged down in filler, and Mason can be rather annoying towards his sister and the climax is weak, with a reveal that makes no sense when you think of it which stinks as it is the payoff to a major plot point, kinda. I do sorta like the twist though.

It does involve the return of a certain character I don't care for but this was his best appearance which may not be saying much but I'll take it. Overall, far from one of the best in years but there''s been worse. Also, this is the first slappyworld to have no red-head I could find, gasp!

Bonus points for the Captain Underpants reference though.

The most unpopular Goosebumps story—but also a really good one! This story turned out to be a surprisingly fun read and a nice addition (and maybe send off) to the superhero Goosebumps stories. To name what I particularly like, the main character was solid and the story was really interesting. It’s definitely a basic superhero tale but I liked what Stine did with it. The Night Howler is an interesting concept and I quite liked it, and Cory was cool too. The villains that appeared were all pretty neat, and a certain character that has been in other Goosebumps books that I shall not name for spoilers was the best villain here, no competition. I had a lot of fun with the story, and it was overall very well written… however I have some issues. The friends were very uninteresting in the story and were bland filler, plus the YouTube and Instagram references were kinda off-putting. It doesn’t feel like Stine’s doing when those are brought up, idk just saying. Not to mention the sister was annoying as all-mighty hell early on. And the biggest issue is the fact that this book isn’t goosebumps-y. There is no attempts to be scary, just funny and fun. Is that an issue? Yes. Does it bother me unconditionally? Barely. Overall? 8.5/10. A very solid superhero story with lots of interesting things, and even a fourth-wall break, but with small issues.

They Call Me the Night Howler! by R.L. Stine is another book in the Goosebumps Slappy World series. The story outlines a young boy named Mason as he and his family visit a comic book museum. He sees lots of heroes and villains in what he thinks are just costumes, until he meets someone who claims to be Mason's favorite hero, the Night Howler. The Night Howler says that he is tired of being a superhero and offers his costume, which is where his powers come from, to Mason. With the new responsibility of being a superhero, Mason starts training with the original Night Howler to take down his nemesis, Dr. Maniac. After he defeats Dr. Maniac with help from another superhero (who turns out to be his sister, Stella in costume), Dr. Maniac confesses that he, too is tired of being a villain. He offers his role and costume to Mason, who accepts the position. This book has a good plot, but is sadly not as scary as most other Goosebumps books are. And, despite R.L. Stine's claims for this book to be "one of his best in years," it was mainly just a comedic book. However, I still recommend this book to 3-5 grade class, because what kid doesn't love a Goosebumps book?

In the beginning I like R.L Stine Einstein's characterization of imagery of when Mason and his friends were over his house. Quote states “I’m just a kid, I'm twelve years old, he began circling the room watching me”(R.L Stine, 26). Shortly then I did not like how Mason showed a lack of honesty and tried to manipulate his friends from thinking he was the night howler. Later on, I like how R.L Stine’s characterization of sarcasm shows when Mason and his friends were going to school. In the book it states “One thing you should do Mason he said what's that practice your howl, it is important it is your trademark”(R.L. Stine 100). As a result, I like how R.L Stine Einstein's characterization of how concisive Mason and Mr Maniac shows in this quote. Quote states, “I’m not crazy, I’m not crazy, I’m a maniac he screamed will, I’m the night howler, I’ve robbed your house, I know who you are” ( R.L Stine 106).Towards the end I like how Airlon Einstein's characterization of Mason's sister's strategy when going outside the house before going to the city. Quote states, “How could this be, how can this be my sister, she is my archenemy”(R.L Stine 122).

While visiting a museum dedicated to comic book superheros, comic book fan Mason Brady encounters a distraught man who gives him a superhero costume and announces that he's quitting crimefighting. Mason Brady recognizes it as the costume for The Night Howler and must suit up in order to stop supervillains (including Dr. Maniac) from wrecking his town.

This one diverged from all the books so far. This was more a superhero book and not sure how it fit in the theme thus far. Sorry to say if your one that needs to read every book in a series, but there is nothing to miss on this one. I did not hate the book as much as it sounds but felt like it should have been a stand alone, non-Goodebumps story.

This is the least scary Goosebumps book that I’ve read. At least when I listen to the other ones I can see which parts would have given 8 year old me ‘goosebumps’ or left me in fear. This one just feels like a superhero book for kids but erratic and left a bit to be desired. Not spoopy. Did not feel like a Goosebumps book.

A comic book fan gets the chance of a lifetime when he meets the real superhero Night Howler at the Comic Book Museum. Mason gets to be Night Crawler, until his sister Stella finds out it's him in the suit. Mason gets another chance but instead of being a superhero this time he gets to try being a supervillain instead.

A middle of the road Goosebumps book. I didn't finish it, but I can tell it was at least on the good side of the R.L. Stine scale. His works are very hit or miss. This is a very average one, giving him a chance to write a super hero story instead of children's horror. If you enjoy his writing style, this one is enjoyable.

The end twist was kind of fun. The main character Mason runs into Dr. Maniac at the museum and Dr. Maniac says he us retiring. Mason then takes the mantle as a bad guy and takes over the role of Dr. Maniac. So, in the future he will be the new Dr. Maniac.

Hard to imagine a duller superhero story, or a book written more lazily. Even my young boys laughed in ridicule at Blue Strawberry, an incredibly dumb villain whose superpower is to conjure avalanches of fruit. Other Goosebumps books feel inspired by comparison.
