Mari Okada is notorious in anime fandom for being a fantastic writer who often lets her own kinks and obsessions take over the story. As it happens, her kinks and obsessions line up with mine, so I don't care. In the case of Ano Hi Mita no Namae o Bokutachi wa Made Shiranai (We Still Don't Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day, or just plain "Ano Hana" for short), her tendencies were held in check by a director who allegedly made her change a great part of the plot, though this didn't stop her from including the requisite cross-dressing scene. But if you look to Okada's novelization expecting a revelation about what she changed, you'll be disappointed. There's a hint that she wanted to tell about childhood friends drifting apart as they discover that once they grow beyond running in the woods they don't have anything in common, but that's about it.
The story begins with Jintan, a teenager who attends school just often enough not to be considered a drop-out, sitting in his room playing a video game and wondering if he should take a bath today, when his friend Menma comes in. Now this is very odd seeing as Menma is five years dead, but she won't leave Jintan alone until he agrees to grant her wish. This is even more troublesome since she isn't exactly sure what her wish is, except she knows it requires all their friends from five years ago to fulfill.
The problem is, after Menma's death in a tragic accident, the friends each blamed themselves for what happened and drifted apart. Jintan went from a straight-A student to a loser who barely goes to school; Anaru started hanging out with the sort of trendy girls who wear clothes in appropriate for her age; Poppo started working itinerant jobs instead of going to high school and takes backpacking trips abroad during off seasons; while Tsuruko and Yukiatsu, the only two to remain friends, are attending a preppy private school. So now Jintan has to bring these people back together, convince them he's not delusional, and figure out what Menma's wish is.
#tsaah
Udah lama ga baca manga genre slice of life begini.
Rasanya sedih.... Ibunya Menma katanya memang agak terganggu jiwanya sejak kematian anaknya. Huhuhuuu
I wonder why it is categorized as shounen? This manga is about a group of friends (3 boys, 2 girls) whose friendship fell apart once one of their friends died. When they were children, they formed some kind of Sentai group, and they were all very close. Then Menma died. Years later, her ghost appears to Jintan, who used to be like the leader of the group. She wants her wish to be fulfilled; only she can't remember what that wish was. So slowly, Jintan starts to talk to his former friends again, and although only one of them believe him, eventually they all work to make the wish come true.
I think this was a good, melancholic story. Too bad there are only 2 volumes translated. The story deals with friendship, dealing with death (not only Menma's, but Jintan's mother as well, a tiny bit), reminiscences, jealousy. How Menma died is never explicit. It is sad to see this group of friends reacting coldly to each other after many years of not talking (except for Poppo). Some were even mean to each other. I read that this story made people cry, but I didn't. Yes, it was sad, but some parts didn't make sense to me. Weren't they like 7 when Menma died? So why is that Yukiatsu so obsessed with her? Yes, she was his crush when they were like 7, however, I don't understand why he would be THAT obsessed with her. Not counting he was a little bastard towards Jintan, because of jealousy.
So I liked the group at the beginning, but it disappointed me that there are several crushes within the group. It would have been much better if it was all based on friendship. Isn't that more a shoujo thing than shounen?
This is the first light novel in the Ano Hana series adapted from the anime of the same name. I read an unofficial translation published online.
I would not recommend this, or at least not this translation, for someone unfamiliar with the anime. Some of the metaphorical language being used was confusing and would not have made sense to me if I hadn't watched the anime first and known that by "the personification of lust must not know the other thing is there" the narrator means that Anaru, his childhood friend who now wears short skirts, must not know that the ghost of his dead childhood friend has appeared. Also, sometimes it was hard to know what dialogue was spoken by who - there aren't many dialogue markers, since Japanese light novels tend to leave it to word choice to show who's speaking rather than adding "he said she said" at the end, but most of these speech patterns don't translate well into English. The only cues that are preserved to some extent in this translation are the names/nicknames the characters call each other, but even these change at various points to show how the characters' relationships have changed.
If you HAVE seen the anime, though, this was nonetheless an enjoyable read. And I'm sure if you're fluent in Japanese and can read the original version of this book, it would be enjoyable regardless.
