What I didn't like about this book is how Raj evolved. He went from this cool, caring kid to a little *sshole who betrays his family and friends. That spoiled the book a bit for me.
This third book in the Dustborn Series still deserves a five-star rating but had a lot more thinking, planning, (spell that Scheming), and less Action than the first two books. While this is billed as a Dystopian Sci-Fi story, it is also Action Adventure. The surviving members of their destroyed town are hiding out in a series of caves in the mountain next to their town. Except for a disastrous scavenging mission to the town, most of the story takes place in these caves. This doesn't lend itself to the same level of action I enjoyed in the first two books. As book three ends, it's obvious there will be some serious action outside the caves. They are heading out after extensive training and with a new weapon in an attempt to kill the Abomination (Monster) that destroyed their town and killed half of their friends, neighbors, and relatives. Finally, I'm a strong advocate that every book should be able to stand on its own. The author needs to resolve the main issues in each segment while letting us know there will be more to the series. Otherwise, it feels like we're left wondering, "Will Lassie get home and bring help before Timmy freezes to death in the Well he just fell into...again?"
This installment, in the Sandstorm 4 book collection, is more about drama and the vindictive nature of those who feel they've been done wrong and the power struggle when among those in charge are no longer in charge and new leaders emerge out of death and devastation. I gave this book 4 stars for keeping the old leader alive for no reason, since his presence serves no purpose in the plot and the story's own development, after the devastation and decimation of the colony at the hands' of the monster or lack of.
"This is a great continuation of the series", I hissed to my friend. 🧐 I hate the use of the word hissed in your writing. But I do love your work. I have 27 of your books and enjoy everything you create. This book moves the story along nicely and builds some tension. I def can't wait to grab the next one and see the abomination destroyed. Keep up the great work, hissed the reviewer.
I have the box set of this series so will just say that book three is about disloyalty, ego, thirst for power and how decent people always try to do the right thing even at a cost to themselves.
Yes, it was enjoyable seeing how this set of characters coped with the terrors and shortages of the region, however, it was annoying, too...Raj is a pain and Gideon is just awful. Bit then that makes for good fiction.
Continuing storyline of Neena, Kai, Raj, Samel and the surviving members of Red Rock. Plenty of intrigue and betrayal. Adolescent ego causes more problems for Neena.
It will become pretty apparent as you read these that they have a definite Dune feel to them. But they are great stories that have some memorable characters and are fun to read.
