The one where Emma meets a hot stranger in a bar, hot stranger turns her down, then coincidentally, they meet again where said hot stranger is Emma's five year old son's Kindergarten teacher.
4 Stars for the Once Upon a Time - Alternative Universe (AU) fiction. This story borrows OUAT characters and places them outside of Storybrook - there is no magic, Evil Queens, fairy tale characters etc. Its not essential to know the characters of OUAT.
Emma, is a single, twenty-five year old nurse. She is raising her 5 year old son, Henry who is about to enter Kindergarten. Ruby, her bestie and fellow nurse persuades Emma to go out for a drink or two. Emma spots a gorgeous brunette at the bar and awkwardly asks her if she could buy her a drink. The woman says in Spanish that she doesn't speak english. Lo and behold, Henry's kindergarten teacher turns out to be the woman at the bar, Regina Mills or as Henry calls her Miss Miss. It is Henry with his charm, innocence and boisterousness that brings and binds this story together. And so this begins this slo-burn, friends to lovers romance.
I really enjoyed this well written story. With a bit of tweaking, I could see this story converted into a published novel.
Luce’s review made me decide to read this fic, so I suggest you take a look at it too!
I really enjoyed this fic. Some of the regulars make cameos, but the focus is right where I want it, defrosting Regina via Emma’s hotness. I think their interaction was very natural, sweet and spicy in turns. The story is told from both of their POVs, but manages to avoid head-hopping which is good.
At first I couldn’t imagine Regina as a kindergarten teacher, but it works! I really like her character arc as she goes from ice-queen who guards her heart to a woman in touch with her inner feelings and desires.
This is a slow-burn and goes at a good pace, I like how Emma was written. She’s a confident professional but still a big, awkward goof who gives everything in her heart and soul to those she loves. In this fic, she never gave up Henry and is a pediatric nurse, which I thought was an interesting and nice choice for her.
Both of them have had male lovers in the last, and in Regina’s case only male lovers, so she tends to think about her ex a lot, especially when coming to terms with her growing feelings and desires for Emma. Thankfully, her thoughts aren’t very detailed and the author leaves a lot unspoken.
Overall, this is a well-written fic that moves quickly but still gives you that great slow burn and doesn’t end too soon either.
