Sincerely enjoyed this Christmas devotional, filled with excerpts from"The Inklings:" Lewis, Tolkien etc. Available through Christian History Institute.
It was good to read so many quotes from the Inklings and some of their compatriots. The devotional content was hit or miss. A bunch of wishy-washy stuff. Sometimes you get a really good solid, theological devotional urging you to seek after Christ and others you get a really sappy story of some woman's Christmas present she got years ago and then get some concept shoe horned in at the end.
I enjoyed this little Advent devotional. Each day’s reading features a short but thoughtful quotation from one of the Inkling or Inkling related authors associated with the Wade Center at Wheaton College. A modern author/scholar then offers a look at Christmas through inspired by the quotation. A short prayer rounds out the entry. Each day’s reading is also accompanied by a beautiful full-page, color illustration.
We didn't finish this in Advent, but kept going anyway. It was satisfying, fairly deep, and a little academic at times. It weaves together the Nativity story from scripture, the writings of famous theologians and authors, with each day's reading written by a more contemporary author. We will use it again next year, and have marked one of the later readings to be the first one next time.
The Grand Miracle: Daily Reflections for the Season of Advent is a beautifully written and thought provoking four-week devotional based on the writings of Lewis, Tolkien, Sayers, MacDonald, Chesterton and others. Contributors include Patti Callahan Henry, Philip Ryken, George Marsden, Carolyn Weber, Max McLean as well as other Christian scholars and authors. Highly recommend!
