Recently I toured the Confederate White House in Richmond, Virginia. Our tour guide referred to Jefferson Davis as "the President" and Abraham Lincoln as " the gentleman from Illinois". Okay it is the Confederate White House, so these gimmicks made a very interesting tour even more so. I also knew I would be reading more about Mr. Davis. This book did deliver a good introduction of his life before, during and after the Civil War. The US Capital would not look as it does today without Davis initiating the expansion in 1850. Davis served as Secretary of War under Pierce, a Democratic congressman and a senator from Mississippi, before becoming President of the Confederacy. This book is just an introduction, but a good one. The United States has a rich history, we can learn from both our mistakes and our successes. In order to fully understand what is happening today, we have to comprehend the significance of what happened yesterday.
