The kids are NOT alright. The Literature Club members are individually picking up the pieces from the events of last volume, but the club itself is deteriorating as oh-so-very-adolescent conflicts and problems set the tightly knit group against one another more than ever.

You can’t fault this series for how well it gives us multiple perspectives on young girls growing into being young women. From Hongo’s teacher crush (agonizingly, she recognizes the lesson she was supposed to learn and then refuses to learn it) to Kazusa’s childhood friend woes to Momoko’s developing homosexuality (one downside in this book is how short a shrift she gets), there are a ton of lenses through which we see how people develop into adulthood.

Sonezaki’s story in particular has ended up being one of my favorites; watching her very black and white rules-at-all costs perspective get shaken to the core both by her boyfriend and by her friendship with a girl who is her complete opposite was a joy.

Sugewara is somewhat less successful - it’s been quite the arc watching her cool confidence get shattered to pieces, but her constant interactions with her incredibly nasty predator always suck the wind out of the book for me (seriously, somebody drop a bridge on this guy).

In the back of the book is an interview where they describe this as a sex comedy starring females and I was taken aback when I remembered that that was where this series originally started.

It’s still funny now (Kazusa’s reaction after a heart to heart with Sugewara is hilarious), but the humor doesn’t juxtapose well as things have become more and more serious.

Honestly, the way the book ends has me slightly concerned as it goes for a very screwball solution to a very serious story arc that ended up catching Sonezaki as collateral damage. There’s a way to mix drama and comedy well, but I don’t think this series excels at it.

One volume to go (I previously said this was the last volume, whoops) and we’ll see what kind of ending can be made from this, but there’s a LOT still in the breeze and I have concerns about how this will address all its dangling threads.

Damn, I blew through this volume! It was so intense and certain parts made me uncomfortable, but it I'm impressed that Okada was willing to make the reader uncomfortable in order to realistically tell this story.

I don't want to say too much because I definitely think this is better read spoiler free, but what I will say is that a lot was discussed regarding judging a girl's actions but leaving the boy out of the equation, trying to prevent something as natural as romance from occurring between teenagers (shouldn't have to say how stupid and futile that is), and most importantly how complicated romance is. I'm thrilled that Okada is removing that typical shoujo veil that makes all romance fun and bubbly and sweet and instead showing the harsh realities of romance and romantic relationships.

Also, no joke, SHIT IS GOING DOWN in the next volume! Seriously, that ending was so fucking badass and cool and makes me so stoked to read the final volume. These girls have come a long way and I'm so fucking proud of how strong they've become. Looking forward to the final volume!

This series remains so sincere and funny and cute and heartbreaking. It's neat to see everyone come together after so much breaking apart, and I look forward to the next (perhaps final?) volume.

If ever there was someone more deserving of a punch to the face... there’s some dark, angsty bits here, but at least we finish with much hilarity!

. A part d'això, same old, same old: la Niina, la Momoko i la Hongo fan patir moltíssim i la relació de la Kazusa i l'Izumi va avançant passet a passet. Espero la traca final del darrer volum! :)
