After World War II, three young wives accompany their Air Force officer husbands to Tripoli--where one of the women is killed--and twenty years later the two survivors resolve to finally unravel her mysterious death
I loved this book when I read it at as teenager. Found a copy in a charity shop recently and really enjoyed re-reading it...The story is about a group of Air Force wives whose husbands are sent to the Wheelus base in Tripoli shortly after the war. The women are a diverse group, forced into the kind of unique friendships that are created in a military environment. The story follows their lives up until the eighties where they re-group to look into the suicide of one of the wives several years before.
This book was on one of my shelves for years and because of the title, i thought i would never read it. I am down to a very low number of books to chose from, so i got it down, I read the inside cover and thought i might just be surprised and enjoy it. I was surprised, It was far worse than i had expected. A good plot and time period and even a few interesting characters, But it was terrible, I could not wait to be done with it, I must admit that perhaps female readers might not agree with me. It might appeal to them. That is who the author was writing for, I think.
I have had this book setting on my bookshelf for 20 years. Why I never read it sooner I will never know. I enjoyed this story of 4 women married to men in the Air Force and assigned to an American base in Tripoli, Libya, after World War II. Reading it now, makes you realize how much women's roles have changed. It was a great read if you are interested in the past.
Takes place in the sixties, tells the story of four young women who married Airforce men. My mom bought it at Goodwill and recommended it to me. It was ok. Will I remember it in a year? No.
