The Draak, an ancient race of dragon shapeshifters, claim Earth after centuries of absence. To some, the Draak are like gods. To others, they're invaders. To Everly Ghlass, they're the ones that took everything from her.
After her adopted father is convicted of killing a high ranking Draak, Everly enters a deadly competition to win his freedom. Her plans are shattered when the brother of the murdered Draak claims the keys to her fate. Draven Tempest is one of the oldest Draak, a man with a literal raging fire in him and plenty of pent up anger. Anger he plans to direct at Everly. Now she has a choice. She can fight until it destroys her or surrender to a dangerously alluring new life.
At first, it's a cruel, psychological game, but as time passes, the fearless Everly Ghlass begins to chip away at Draven's hardened exterior to find something aggressive...and passionate.
As the two inch closer to a threshold that will leave them both changed forever, conspiracy and rebellion threaten the balance of the world. With war on the horizon, Everly and Draven must discover where they stand or be torn apart in a storm of fire.
I was born on a teeny tiny island in the middle of the ocean to two amazing and adventurous parents. When we moved to the mainland, I was raised on an ostrich ranch in rural Arizona where learned about hard work and responsibility. I attribute my determination to my upbringing and loved the adventures of my younger years. Myself and my siblings schooled in the city, a one hour commute each way. I majored in theatre then immediately moved on to college when I was 17 pursuing fashion and costume design. I graduated during the recession and couldn't find work, so depression got me until I found the cosplay community and opened up again with both a social life and a creative drive. Through ALL of this, I was writing in my spare time. From the moment I could draw really sloppy letters on a page, I was creating stories and it became something I did to relieve stress and cope with life changes. At 17, I finished my first novel at 160,000 words (it since got lost in many crashed computers and moves) But since then I have been writing like a mad woman and finally published in 2019. I have no plans of stopping.
This is a story I could not put down. Well written, full of action and suspense. It can be read as a standalone, but I reckon you will want to read on to the next in the series. Draven is an Ash Bringer, a Red Dragon many decades old. He thrives on his anger. Everly is an orphan, whose life has been one of hardships except for the man who saved her from the orphanage. When Everly and Draven collide, each are suffering from the pain of losing someone dear to them. Little do each know the web of deceit they are about to be caught up in.
I honestly can't believe this doesn't have more ratings or reviews.
Last week my husband and I rewatched The Shape of Water and afterwards I was looking for books that gave me the same feeling it did. Maybe one of the MC's isn't quite human but there was still a lot of conflict and tension and romance. This rabbit hole led me to Ash Bringer.
I'll start with saying that Everly is a badass and I love her.
“But I’ll never marry. No one would want me like this. You’ll be stuck with me forever. You want someone to take care of you? Is that it?”
“I don’t need anyone taking care of me,” Taurus smiled. “And marriage is for women who need the security of a man. Do you need that? I see a girl who can be stronger than any man, if she tried to be.”
We open up on what is essentially A Maze Runner situation but more intense. Technically, this is a hard thing to do. The reader doesn't care about Everly enough in the beginning to really feel connected to her stakes, but Leigh does a fantastic job of weaving the action into the character and making you resonate with her almost immediately.
You know what that outlook gets you? The idea of independence? Trouble. This world doesn’t prey on the weak. It preys on the strong. The world likes the weak. The weak are easy to control.
Draven was very well done and so was the world-building. I'm usually not even one to comment on world-building but I really liked the politics of this and the realistic nature of how long-lived beings suffer and survive. I would say the only minor drawback for the world-building for me was that .
I will admit the ending felt a bit rushed/a little confusing for me. Not enough to draw overrall enjoyment away, but enough to make it 4 instead of 5 stars.
This was a fantastic book to start 2021 with. I've started the sequel and it's good so far as well! Leigh has some beautiful prose and I'm looking forward to diving into more of her work.
“Calming a raging fire isn’t exactly my area of expertise.” “No, you tend to feed it,” Draven scoffed. “I don’t mean to. I grew up hating the world more than most and Draak are its rulers. Fire took everything from me.” I turned to my shoulder again. “Both times.” “I can’t take back what—” “No one can,” I cut him off. “The difference between us is that you have hundreds of years to forget about your mistakes. Humans have to live with theirs until they die.” “We don’t forget about our mistakes. We just get angrier.” “No one’s as angry as you.” Draven was quiet for a moment before speaking in a softer tone. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes,” he said.
I really liked this book. As a guy, i though it had a good balance and I really liked the underlying story. the dragon men were BADASS and the romance was hot. I started with the midnight breed series back in the day and this was a good follow up.
Wow! I’m a sucker for a Dragon romance, and Courtney delivered! This definitely had a dark edge to it, a true enemies to lovers with some bite... it was real and gritty and emotional... and I absolutely loved it! Everly and Draven’s journey was not an easy one for these two strong and incredible characters. A slow burn that exploded into crazy chemistry and passion 🖤 The plot was detailed and full of mystery and surprises, the characters were well developed, the romance was on point. Great book! Can’t wait for the next in the series!
Holy shiznet!!! This story is gr8. Everley s one tough cookie. She fights for what she wants, and she wants justice. Draven is one scary Dragon shifter and he and Everley crash against each other. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
I give this book 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The world build was described very well. I loved the two main Characters. Everly was an orphan who got adopted by Taurus who is half dragon and half human, He taught her to fight and how to defend herself. She is strong, sarcastic and street smart. I liked how the beginning of the book had a hunger games vibe going on in the beginning of the book that was so awesome. Oh and let me tell you Everlys disdain for the shape shifting dragons, but you can’t blame her since the are the ones that she was made to believe to kill her parents and almost herself so you can’t blame the girl. Now let’s talk about Draven who by the way doesn’t care much for the greedy ole humans who he really hates bc they killed his twin brother and you know who killed his twin?? Yep it was Taurus, Everly’s adoptive father, who Draven kills right in front of Everly and to punish her more he bonded her to him, so there was an enemy to lovers kind of romance and once the romance hit it was hot 🔥. So there is so much more to the story besides the hot romance, we have the mystery and the FALCONS who are really just very bad group of people. I highly recommend this book and will be reading book two of the series. This book was definitely a pager turner from page one, the author is also new to me, I just finished before this book of hers called Feeder, which is a Vampire book that I loved and after searching for other books by Courtney I fell upon this one and so happy I read it!
As a male it is hard for me to really get into Romance but this book absolutely got me! I read it in one sitting because the action and romance are very balanced. The underlying story is set up so well it makes you not be able to wait for the next one.
Now that was good. The first book in a new series, always a hard one, if it’s not strong enough, then people won’t be interested in reading anymore. It’s written by the characters points of view (not a big fan, but today it works)
Everly needs to win the Red Race, it’s the only way to free the only person other than her parents (who are dead) she’s ever loved. He’s been like a father to her, so him being wrongly imprisoned doesn’t sit with Everly at all, she can’t break him out, but if she wins the race through the maze, she can have anything she wants, and Everly knows exactly what she wants!!!
Draven knows that his kind don’t belong here, (but they did once, a long time ago) but the humans weren’t strong to hold onto this place, so it’s now belongs to the Draak, and so does everything on Earth. To Draven human women are vessels to use, and anyone not loyal to his race, are vermin to be exterminated!!!
That was a hard book to read, it was amazing stuff, but the animosity that Draven had for humanity was sometimes overwhelming to read, his disregard for human life, and they were all either pets or pests, and so took it out on Everly!! I have to admit I didn’t think he’d ever get past the revenge he wanted for the death of his brother, but like most arrogant alpha males, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.. And fall he did, the brand he placed upon Everly was meant as a punishment, however, it backfired. He felt her emotions, dreamed her dreams and got an insight into his infuriating “pet.”
Everly held her own through most of the book, entering a race to the death for her adoptive father. Winning the race, only to be told her one wish wasn’t to be granted, instead she was to be “branded” and used like cattle (her thoughts) she was prepared for physical torture, to be “used and abused” she certainly didn’t go down without a fight, she fought him physically, and mentally. She didn’t want to understand him, but living under his roof, Everly saw a different side to him, and the Draak in general, they weren’t all killers, they are nurturers, they love their family and the human women who bear their offspring.
The hierarchy of the Draak takes a little getting use to, Draven although the strongest, isn’t the leader, that title belongs to a brother, he’s a fighter not a diplomat.
And both have decisions to make, there is a war coming, the rebel humans are fighting back.
So will Everly be able to get past her loathing of the Draak? Can she forgive her “captor and master” for killing her father? Can Draven look past his loathing of the human race?
• Enemies to lovers • Class system • Virgin sex (steamy!) • Scarred heroine • Dragon shifters • Mate Bond • Complex story and characters • HEA
“I wanted to slap myself just for thinking of him with anything other than hatred, even if only for a few seconds.” “The anger is moving on. I’m finding questions that hurt me to ask. Was Taurus a good person or was he just pretending to be for me?”
This story gripped me up until 65%. It is an exciting but long fantasy about a human female and an old red dragon shifter slowly growing more romantic towards each other. I would never have guessed that from the title alone. The theme is really sweet: if you love them, you have to let them go. Give them the choice whether to stay.
The first part kept me entertained. Everly engaged in a blood circus to win the right to one wish: her guardian’s freedom. The more I read the more I understood about her guardian and his guilt…but not for the crime for which he was sentenced. Unfortunately, her wish led to a surprising plot twist, and she became bonded to Draven.
The characters were well-rounded and likable. Everly might have been hardened from growing up with a guardian who was a pariah himself (a half-dragon mutant), a guardian who was formerly of the Resistance, but her forced bonding to Draven also forced her to face her own biases. It took her a while to recognize and accept her attraction to Draven.
Draven was old but not senile. As such, he was used to flaunting the rules that govern everyone else, and he took what he had no right to: Everly. Draven respected her fighting skills and attitude but didn’t realize at first that he was attracted to her.
But what really interested me were the other side characters. The 6 year old and his parents really helped describe the dragon shifter culture.
The story is so strong it deserves a review despite my reading fatigue. And I eventually finished it. I will check out this author’s other books, too.
I liked the idea of it, but I felt disconnected from the main leads' romantic development. I failed to buy into how quickly they developed a sexual relationship that turned into love when the heroine hated Draven with a passion that didn't convince me it was "there's a thin line between love, hate or lust". It felt like we jumped a huge distance from how they actually came to care for each other. Sadly, a few convenient scenes of the heroine being hurt, and their bond compelling Draven to rescue her doesn't make any difference that he suddenly cared for her.
EVERLY was strong, but her character seemed immature and a desperate cry of a little girl who didn't wish to be alone. I liked that she fought for what she believed in, stood her ground and had honour, however, the way she executed or acted on her emotions, made her seemed like a kitten trying to ward off an angry dragon.
Some strong female heroines are attractive and the sexual tension that should come naturally between Everly and Draven wasn't that - NATURAL. Their first sex scene seemed a little out of the blue, even if fueled by Everly's misguided attraction muddled by alcohol.
DRAVEN was too old and powerful to easily succumb to "softer emotions". Of course, as the MMC, he WOULD have to fall for the heroine just like that. It was no fun to watch or experience. I liked that he was cold, cruel and ruthless in the beginning, however frankly, he was only a hurt and angry dragon who wanted to lash out at a dead enemy. Who better than to take out his frustration on a helpless human female?
OVERALL now that I rehash the story, the pacing was a little off and things were a bit all over the place. The passion and angst wasn't in the right place, even if the story started off well, but the emotions and relationship didn't gel or evolved naturally as it should. I felt like I was forced-fed to read what the author assumes we want to read.
I really wanted to like this book. I DNFed almost every chapter, but kept going in the hopes it would redeem itself. No such luck :(
There are multiple things about this book that really irritate me, but the main one is how the whole thing basically glamorizes Stockholm Syndrome. I like enemies to lovers romance as much as we all do, but there was such a power imbalance between the FMC and MMC!!! There is no way you can convince me that Everly didn’t just fall in love with Draken because (SPOLIER alert!)
This other thing that really pissed me off was how all the terms were tossed around like I was supposed to already know what they meant: ash bringer, archon, zephyr, I could go on and on. Even after finishing this gd book, I don’t really know what an archon is and why it’s so important for the Draak to have one! If you want me to care about the storyline, you could at least try to explain it clearly!
Finally the MMC has no character growth whatsoever! His whole thing is the humans suck and Draak are so clearly superior, but even after falling in love with a human, he still considers everyone but Everly human filth. Sure Everly was totally prejudiced against Draak in the beginning, but she changed and had a satisfying character arc. Draven just remained the same ass he started out as!
Ugh sooooooo disappointed because this had so much potential, but reading this was just frustrating and a waste of time. Do not recommend :(
I liked the world building and writing style from C.L. I enjoyed the fact that conflict between MC’s wasn’t easily resolved or forgotten quickly, it was realistic. Why a low rating then?? Well, without spoiling the book, I wish Draven hadn’t done something to a much beloved figure in Ever’s life.
Whilst I understand the circumstances, it coloured the book for me and I just failed to connect with Draven. I also abhor that in this day and age, MFC’s are still portrayed as “virgins” in comparison to a man who’s lived for centuries, so no doubt quite experienced 🤮🙄. Can we stop?! For those reasons, it took me 3 days of on and off (self-forced) reading whereas I usually devour books within a day.
3.5. Overall the relationship didnt feel like it finished developing. There was an ending sex scene and a few short words at the end, but no real closure to all that build up. For such a strong spirited woman, it would have been nice to see her develop into his world. I would have loved a chapter to see her to take a role or have some value other than just as his "marked female." When her story ended she was no better than any of the other women she looked down upon at the start of the story. There was not even any mention to coming around to the other women's choices.
Beautifully written, start to finish. Not a surprise because Courtney is an incredibly talented author! Immediate action grasps you in a chokehold, and you’re instantly drawn to all the characters. Perfect balance of spice and storyline. Can’t wait to read more in the series!!!
I just loved this story. Both MC's were strong. Such a rich world-building aspect to this series. While the romance storyline is really solid, there is an over arching storyline that continues in the rest of the series. It is well done. Full of history, politics, propaganda, and subtle maneuvering.
After finishing I went and bought the rest of the series and so far, into the 3rd book, I've not been disappointed.
This book will always be special to me because it was my very first romance. I spent so many months reading and re-reading this book and growing to love the characters. Everly is hard-headed and strong, but she has such a soft side that I couldn't help looking up to her. I hope a lot of women relate to her, because even if we're not winning murder races, we're all strong in our own way 😂 And Draven is kind of my dream man. Rough, growly, and so protective, it's scary sometimes. This is an enemies-to-lovers book where the couple starts pretty rough. (Trust me. In my first draft, it was a lot rougher.) I wanted people to question if there was ANY way they could love each other in the beginning. And then the line is crossed, there's no going back. Draven and Everly will be my forever favorite couple <3
This book has a very unique story line. There can be all sorts of aliens in the universe! I love the way the characters and scenes are described in such detail that I can easily visualize the story in my mind as I'm reading. The author has a way of adding a twist or surprise from time to time that really keeps the story interesting too. And, of course, it gets pretty steamy in a couple of places! I recommend it to anyone who likes an imaginative and exciting romance adventure.
