Victoria Vale writes erotic romance that refuses to stay in its lane. She hops between history and suspense, blending danger with desire until the edges blur. Her stories are marked by bold heroines, irresistible heroes, and heat that never behaves the way it should. Love Me Darkly (2025) proves passion is always at its best when it misbehaves.

Review for only The Captain's Surrender by Anna Bradley

*3.75 stars*

I've basically been begging Anna Bradley to write a full-length M/M romance for some time now, and she came in swinging with this story, a pirate romance with some heavy angst and lots of pain between the two MCs. Overall, the story was fantastic, but I think most of my issues had to do with the fact that the story was so short.

I didn't love the erotic content on page between the two when they were teenagers (not my bag...), and I thought that these two went from brutal enemies to lovers too quickly and perhaps a bit awkwardly once they met again as adults. I think if the story was longer, everything would have felt more organic and flowed a bit better. Also, the sexual dynamics would have had time to really come about more naturally. However, I usually don't like short stories, and the fact that the author packed so much content and so much feeling into a short story format was truly awesome. I think that we got a solid romantic connection between the two MCs and a fully storyline, which I really was into. I basically read the entire story in one sitting (yeah, I know it was short but still), and I left the story wanting more, which is always a good thing.

A great taste of what Anna Bradley has to offer the world of M/M, I can't wait to see what else she has up her sleeve!

TOTAL SMUT FEST, lol

So I read this over a couple of months, bit by bit, and most of the stories were what you'd expect from an anthology like this.

There were only 4 standouts:
(1). The Captain's Captive by Victoria Vale
(2). Troubled Waters by Jane Burrelli
(3). Cut and Thrust by Simone Leigh
(4). Lady Evangeline's Piratical Persuasion by Emily Tilton

I'll be honest and say that I was put off by the amount of dub-con going on that wasn't dealt with in the context of the story. IMO, if you're going to write dub-con, the heroine can't just respond with something along the lines of: 'OMG, you're so hot!'

So, yeah, I was disappointed on that front, especially since a lot of these authors are the heavy hitters of the smut world. But I suppose these stories were never meant to be in-depth excursions into the human psyche, lol.

Enjoy!

I've read the book for Victoria Vale's The Captain's Captive and I am so glad. I really admire Ms. Vale because she researched the era and the geography then wove a hot tale with magical words. I may be exaggerating little bit but she is great imo!
P. S. There were a brutal comeuppance for the villains, my dear bloodthirsty sisters. 😎
P. S. 2 This is a bdsm mixed erotica.

The Blonde Devil of the Sea by Celeste Barclay 3,5 stars!

BOUGHT BY THE BUCCANEER by Vanessa Brooks was predictable for me but a light and fun read. 4 stars!

CUT AND THRUST by Simone Leigh I hate abrupt finish and cliffhanger so 1,5 stars.

PIRATE’S RUIN by Marie Hall 2,5 stars

EDWARD’S LAW by Felicity Brandon was so so, 3 stars!

OWNED BY THE PIRATE by Sue Lyndon and Celeste Jones It was great! 4,5 stars

TROUBLED WATERS by Jane Burrell 4 stars for feisty h!

HIS STOWAWAY by Measha Stone 3,5 stars!

I am reviewing The Captain’s Captive by Victoria Vale. I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Well....wow...this was a GREAT story, as you would expect from Victoria Vale, however, it was not a soft, easy read. Some of the scenes were intense, as you can imagine ...the life of a pirate and the way they manage their life/punishment on board a ship. This book is not for the faint of heart. Not only is Drew a pirate, he’s a mixed-race man who is betrayed by those he trusted. His only wish is to marry his love, but due to the circumstances of his birth and the betrayal of others, he is denied her hand. Drew is strong and dominant and will give you goosebumps!!

Enter Bella, a mixed race woman who has struggled to find her place in society. The child of a wealthy slave owner, she is raised to be a lady with wealth and “privilege”, but is unable to understand her place in the world that would elevate her on the backs of her own people.

Drew and Bella have an everlasting love, that you can feel in the pages of the book. Victoria writes in such a way, you can almost touch it! And the love scenes...(sigh)... beautifully erotic!! I am not ashamed to say it is my favorite part.

I loved this book. I love stories that show a different side of humanity in the historical era, not just the white privileged (and sometimes under privileged) population, but the other nationalities of people that lived and survived during this era. Bravo to you, Victoria, another 5-star win for me! ❤️

I was given this ARC from the great Vanessa Brooks, for an honest review.

This 19 novellas by different authors will release 1/1/20. I read her story, in this book of "19 scorching & spicy historical romances!" Each are written by super talented authors.

"BOUGHT BY THE BUCCANEER" by Vanessa Brooks
This is a short and fast paced story, packed with attention to details, and interesting characters. Lady Florence is an English, she was escorted to Jamaica. Since she is a wild and headstrong young lady, while walking through the markets, she is captured and sold.

Her new master if a gorgeous and virile captain. She is stubborn and not used to taking orders, he remedies that and in the process, seduces her and oh their sizzling love scenes!

This was a pleasure to read. The captain is a man in control and he likes discipline, Lady Florence will learn alot about this captain.. It's a surprising and well paced read. I really like this story line, some action and witty, with an unexpected surprise at the end.

Victoria Vale
Pirates, Passion and Plunder
“The Captain’s Captive”
This is such a great storyline and well written with a romantic plot. Drew has always been in love with Bella. But, unfortunately at a young age he is kidnapped and forced to work on a ship.
Bella was also in love with Drew. Unfortunately his half brother is not a loving brother. There are a lot of surprising surprises in this short and fast paced romance. I love how Drew finally has his own ship, The Sea Lion”. He is all grown up and of course a pirate 🏴‍☠️ He is back and with a vengeance! I love this amazingly talented and favorites author!! Her storylines are captivating and detailed, with action, suspense and hot romance ♥️🥰🔥

Rogue Booty by Golden Angel: ARC copy provided for blog tour review

I'm obviously unable to rate this anthology/box-set because I've only read the one story but daaaaamn, if they're all this good and make my girlie parts tingle I can see a very good rating in the future! I've read a few stories already by Golden Angel so I was prepared for the sexy to be delicious (and it was) but this little gem also had heart and #feels and it made this reading experience that much more satisfying!

Looking forward to reading many more of these stories in 2020 so stay tuned :)

The Captain’s Captive by Victoria Vale 5*
What an enthralling read this was! The two main characters, Arabella and Drew, were very engaging. Even though this was a shorter read, the author was able to convey the deep feelings they had for each other and their background stories. There were some very heartfelt moments and passionate scenes. I love it when the villains get their comeuppance.
The Blonde Devil of the Sea by Celeste Barclay 4*
This was an entertaining read. Caragh was the main organiser of the smuggling ring for her village. She was used to taking care of her family and her village. Rowen, has become a pirate due to his back ground story. They discover they have Scottish roots in common and they have a very passionate relationship. Have they discovered their soul mate? There are some dangerous moments, tense times and a misunderstanding that may cause them to split.
I received a copy of these books via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I did purchase my own copy.

It's not you its me Booky book.

Some of the stories were fun but they were dragged down by the not so fun ones hence my rating.

As I read further I realised many of these had exactly the same plot only the names and locations changed really.

Some naughtier than others but the repetitiveness wore me down.

Just not my cup of tea I'm afraid but I did try it.

I've only read His Wicked Ways by S. Cinders but if this is anything to go by, then the rest of this anthology will be awesome! I absolutely loved it. The Heroine Eliza is spunky and strong. She can take care of herself. The hero James is dashing, mysterious and sexy as can be. I couldn't get enough of him. This short story definitely left me wanting more.

What an amazing anthology by a large group of authors.

PIRATE’S RUIN by Marie Hall

HER ACCEPTANCE AND EMBRACE OF WHATEVER RUIN FOUND HER

As a fan of Ms. Marie Hall’s writings, and her previous pirate books, The Pirate’s Daughter and His Pirate Wife, I immediately jumped to Pirate’s Ruin in this boxed set. The story has just enough mystery, suspense, angst, uncertainty, and passion for keeping the pages turning.

Mason Stiles, Captain of Honor, will win a female servant, as she was named, in a hand of cards, and Robert will deliver Nox, as she prefers to be called to his ship. Jane Rutherford is an innocent, caught up in the deceit of her cousin, and now traded to this man—who very well could be a pirate.

“The clanking of chains reminded her she was his prisoner, nothing more than chattel, pressed into service without any consent from her. It was then fear found her.”

Mason thinks he is getting a servant, one who is used to bedsport but will quickly discover she is a virgin. He isn’t into rape, but a willing woman is a different story—and Nox is easily coerced into accepting his lessons and passion. Her reputation is ruined, her life is altered, and now she is his for the next six months—but what happens to her after that?

“Again, her response to the things he did to her amazed. Nox was a perfect woman. Sensual, kind, giving, smart, curious, brave, and so much more he could name.”

“She’d submitted to the fact the man completely bewitched her long before she’d become aware of him doing so. He’d not lied he never forced her. She could never accuse him of rape. Nothing in the way he gained her willingness, raised her desire and made her body’s need to know those wicked pleasures, overrule her head, even, perhaps, her heart. Because she knew with little doubt once this journey came to an end, her heart would be ripped from her chest and sail away with him.”

The story includes explicit sex scenes and multiple discipline scenes including spanking, the use of implements, and figging. The story is filled with danger and suspense as Mason and Nox sail the seas and plot a new course in life.

“It doesn’t take a lot of strength to hold on to things Nox; it takes strength to get back up and begin again once all has been lost.”

3 Stars. Lady Evangeline's Practical Persuasion by Emily Tilton The last story in the anthology is basically a pirate ship gang bang that was erotic as hell with an unlikely ending but worth the read for the dubcon that got Lady Evangeline so worked up with her maid Mary right next to her.

2 Stars. Pirate's Pleasure by Mariah Stone This is a time travel story that, for me, was destined to not live up to the story that came before it. However, even on its own it was too ambitious for a short story. None of it was structured in a way that I could suspend disbelief and just go with it. As a Constance O'Day Flannery fan (Timeless Passion is probably my all time favorite time travel romance) I think I might just be too spoiled both by past books and the story before this one in the book to appreciate this particular entry.

4.25 Stars. Cut and Thrust by Simone Leigh Ah. This story is my favorite in the collection. This story harked back to the plot of the 80's style pirate romance. The disguised female cabin boy. While the plot is stale, the story was well done actually and I found the manner of D/s and how it all came about to be fascinating and erotic as hell. This ends just when it starts to get really good though which is why I can't give it more stars. I want to know what happens next. I hope this is the beginning of a full novel or a serialized story for Master and his cabin girl.

4 Stars. His Wicked Ways by S. Cinders. This story is a big change of pace from the stories before it. The h is not a virgin but a courtesan and the Captain is her long lost love. This story plays fast and loose with consent in the beginning and devolves into a reverse harem situation with three wonderful characters. This is a mix of m/f and m/m and it was one of my favorite stories in the collection. Well told, erotic, interesting and

3 Stars. His Stowaway by Measha Stone. Another tale of adventure seeking heroine finding a kinky captain and getting her HEA. In this story, the heroine has a heroic mission that turns into finding out her friend is part of a throuple in the end. But she has her kinky captain so all is well.

2 Stars. Pursuing Her Pirate by Jaye Peaches. This story seemed nonsensical to me when it started. I couldn't really understand the thought process that set up the pressgang situation. Then the plot devolves into coincidental farce to some degree (he knows her, she knows him both in secret) and doesn't really get much better. The most distracting thing was how poorly edited this story way. I assume they were all edited by the same person but they dropped the ball on this story.

3 Stars. Troubled Waters by Jane Burrelli. This story had a different feel than the rest. It's an established wedded pirate couple struggling with dealing with the "third" in their marriage - the sea. I liked that this one had a different feel to the plot and feel like it would have been a great long form novel.

2.5 Stars. Owned by the Pirate by Sue Lyndon and Celeste Jones. A little twist on the kidnapped trope. I didn't feel this one that much. I didn't like the H or h and didn't really feel the connection. More spanky fun as well.

4 Stars. Pirates Ruin by Marie Hall Another sold to the pirate type of plot but it was engaging and done well in short form. I really liked Mason. I think he is my favorite Pirate in all the stories so far. I liked Nox as well but I really fell for Mason. Kinky, spanky sex like all the other stories so far but this one also had real discipline and was still hot and erotic.

3 Stars. Edward's Rules by Felicity Brandon. This started off slow but felt like a longer story than it was. Once the kinky sex starts I was much more engaged. Frankly, Alice is TSTL and the set up that gets her onboard is ridiculous but how Edward takes advantage of the situation is pretty hot.

2.5 Stars. The Sea Wolf by Lee Savino. This was the weakest story so far. Paranatural elements with no character building. Maybe in a longer book this could have been really good but there just wasn't any real meat to either MC. Finally, there was randomly inserted anal sex at the end that just seemed very weird for this story.

2.5 Stars. Taken by Sin by Sky Purington. This story felt very disjointed. The back and forth with the flash backs and letters and beating around the bush was just frustrating and took away from what could have been an interesting way to find yourself not only kinky, but also the person that matches the other side of your kink.

2.5 Stars. Bought by the Buccaneer by Vanessa Brooks I thought when I started this one that I would really like it because it felt almost fresh, like it broke out of the mold but fairly soon after that information was telegraphed that made me realize it was yet again, another predictable story. I felt like the sex scenes in this one were not very well done and the threats of a spanking were annoying. Once the spanking did start it, I didn't feel connected to the characters.

3.5 Stars. The Blond Devil of the Sea by Celeste Barclay This story had a pretty strong plot and like the other stories was sexually explicit. Set in the British isle somewhere, this one had a D/s layer with spanking. If it hadn't veered off into farce with the cousin, I would have liked it more. Because of how this ended, although not really a cliffhanger, it felt unfinished. I assume we will have Ruari's story coming? Or a finish to Rowan's decision and glimpse into his return home?

This is the first one of the short stories that wasn't centered around the Caribbean and also didn't have a slavery angle. I appreciated that because I was beginning to think that was going to be some type of mandatory theme.

3.5 Stars. Rogue Booty by Golden Angel So, this one was a m/f/m menage with twin piratey brothers and a piratey type wench, perfectly OK with murder and mayhem. A little plot, a little action and a lot of m/f/m sexy times, including DP and spanking. Nothing not to like here for a short story that didn't have the space to give us more backstory (like why and how Blythe became such a well known and sought after pirate wench) but I was okay with that because the time that would have taken up was pretty good erotic sex scenes instead.

2.5 Stars. The Raven by Ashe Barker This story started off terribly. It turned me off and I almost skipped it. The internal thoughts of Paulette while she has sex with her married boss, the mayor are just off putting. Once she gets past that first section, the story picks up and the sex gets kinky fast. Raven is a kinky guy and he didn't hold back and Paulette went right along with him. I gave this less stars because even though this story is mostly wrapped up, the author still found a way to make this a cliffhanger.

3. Stars. The Captain's Captive by Victoria Vale - I'm not sure very many pirate tales can feel new and this one didn't. Compared to old school pirate bodice rippers, this one was written for today's audience of socially aware readers so it's careful not to step on toes or romanticize the era and its slave work force. Both characters are freed children of slave mistresses to separate plantation owners that fall in love but are separated. I felt like this was too short to feel any of the love connection on the part of Drew but he was a kinky guy and he didn't hold back. Bella loved him so.

I've had the pleasure of reading two of the tales in this collection as ARC's. Stories by Vanessa Brooks and Victoria Vale came to me and I have to say, if the rest of the stories in this book are as incredibly well written as these two, readers will have a field day.

Ms. Brooks writes an incredible story about an innocent woman, Florence, married by proxy to a stranger (even if he IS the Vice Governor of Jamaica) who travels from Britain to Kingston to meet her husband only to end up in a slave auction, sold to a pirate (whose name we never learn, so she shall call him Sir). Her story, entitled Bought by the Buccaneer was a perfect addition to a book about pirates. I can't tell you the surprise in the story...nope, secrets are not for me to divulge. Let me just say, you'll love the steam, the spanking, and the HEA.

Ms. Vale wrote a tale by the name of The Captain's Captive. What a wonderfully written story about second-chance love. And may I say an incredibly hot captive and captain. I suspect that everyone who loves a good pirate story will fall in love with Arabella and her Drew. I know that their chemistry nearly melted the cover off my Kindle. Hot, steamy, and a wonderful HEA will not disappoint any readers of this collection.

Kudos to the authors! I love it when my favorite authors gang up on me! :-)

I honestly enjoyed all of these stories:

Sea Wolf by Lee Savino....
I loved this story and would love to see more of them in the future. Maybe Ms. Savino would do that!! LOL

Edwards Law by Felicity Brandon.......
Another story that I found myself enjoying. I loved his "bossiness". This isn't as dark as some of her other stories so it was a nice change of pace. Fell in love with Captain Edward!

His Stowaway by Measha Stone......
Ms. Stone is an author I know I can always count on to give me a great story to read. I loved that she was feisty even though she was naive but Sebastian is a pirate I wouldn't mind sailing away with.

These stories are all good and I would love to see more of the characters in some of them. If you love pirates, pick this anthology up and enjoy!!

Troubled waters by Jane Burrelli is an impressive combination of amazing storytelling skills and great penmanship. Though a novella the author succeeds in portraying very likable and authentic characters with depths and background stories that made me feel them, and spinning and twisting a plot that had me on the edge of my seat while the pages kept turning. It is so well written that it had the scenes playing out like a film in my mind while I read. It is hot, emotional and suspenseful at the same time; I absolutely recommend you read this.

Stone's Pirate's Pleasure is time travel instalove: wham, bam, it's over!😕
3.5🌟 stars
⚓ I really love Mariah Stone's Viking time travel romance novels and just read the companion short Pirate's Treasure in the Once Upon a Pirate anthology. Pirate's Treasure was about the friends of Lisa and Cole who feature in this story; it was just that bit longer to have a more involved plot and I liked it more. Pirate's Pleasure, with a modern woman hooked on the idea of true love spinning back to the early 1700's and the ship's cabin of wild pirate Cole, was just too short for me to settle into the story. A couple bouts of luvvin', yes, they are steamy and a tad BDSM, and some brief danger added a little tension. I just wish there had been more going on plotwise.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the story; this is my voluntary and honest review.

I have not yet read the rest of the stories in the Pirates, Passion and Plunder anthology, but I did read this author’s contribution, Cut and Thrust. I usually don’t read much in the historical romance genre, but this author is a favorite of mine. So, of course, I read her story as soon as I received it. Cut and Thrust is a captivating tale that opens with a classic historical romance trope: a young woman is about to be forced into marriage with a man she despises by her status-grubbing parents. She is an unwilling fiancée who likes to read adventure books her mother does not approve of. Her brother left home at age sixteen to travel the world, and she reads his letters over and over, savoring his descriptions of faraway places. So what does a desperate girl do to escape her unwanted betrothed? Why she cuts off her hair, pawns a jewel or two and, disguised as a boy, runs away to sea! And what an adventure she has, including a love interest and sword fights. Yes, a bodice gets ripped, but it’s not the horror or violation we’d normally think of! This was such a wonderful story; it was a delight to read. It had just the right amounts of adventure, action, and yummy adult romance (yes, R-rated), and a Happy-For-Now ending. For me, it was a 5-star read!

My reviews is for Bought by the Buccaneer by Vanessa Brooks.
A woman (Lady Florence) who craves adventure receives an unexpected offer which takes her to foreign climes. Headstrong and wilful, evading her chaperone she finds herself kidnapped and sold into slavery. Bought by a buccaneer (Sir)! I really enjoyed this tale of adventure, lust, and discipline. Sir has to administer disciple to her for her sauciness. But she still gives as good as she gets, and doesn't completely stop being a minx. Don't fret, there's a twist and a HEA.

I received a ARC from the author, my review is independent and honest.

Pirate’s Pleasure by Mariah Stone.

This is a story of time travel and pirates....what could be better? The main characters, Lisa and Cole have both be burned by love. Lisa still believes in love, Cole can’t commit to love as he doesn’t think he could survive if he should fall in love, only to have her leave him as his last love did. You can feel the fire between them, but is it enough for Cole to take the risk?

Celeste Barclay has written unforgettable romance with a strong plot, remarkable emotions, unforgettable characters, with setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly and will keep you captivated from the moment you begin the journey with Rowan and Caragh until the very end!. BLURB : What happens when a lady smuggler meets a ruthless pirate? Caragh Pedrick is used to smugglers, but she is unprepared for the pirate captain who captures her during a raid.  Rowan MacNeill was forced from his home and into a life of piracy. Now the captain of his own ship, Rowan expects obedience from the minx he unwittingly captured. The question is: will she submit?

MY REVIEW :

What is to do a smuggler Miss when she meets a wicked Pirate and passion erupts ...

Mrs Barclay is releasing two pirate tales in two different bundles, having read both, each is a standalone tale but as the main characters cross road in both, I would recommend to read this one before THE DARK HEART OF THE SEA in the ONCE UPON A PIRATE anthology as the events take place prior to it.
Caragh is instantly drawn to Rowan, and once kidnapped, her prospects become very few so she makes do and surrender to their attraction.
Rowan lived through a betrayal that left him with invisible scars in his soul, thus his inability at a time to see things are they were instead of thinking the worst.
Caragh is very an amazing woman, and very forgiving, her love for him must be tattooed deeply in her heart to be able to pass through his near deception.
Be warned it is a scorching hot tale with a bit of spanking to warm you.

A pirate’s life for me

What a wonderfully steamy collection of pirate stories that you won’t want to miss. Just check out these three books in the anthology by some of my go to authors.

Rouge Booty
She’s a bonny lass
This book is certainly double your pleasure, double your fun. The heroine took ownership of her place in this male dominated world, but she still surrendered to her captain and the first mate. The poor woman learned some hard truths about herself before she found her perfect HEA, but what a fantastic way to get there. I am looking forward to the next book by this author.

The Sea Wolf
A Norse tale of old
I love these old stories with a decidedly edgy twist. It would seem these two characters saved each other. He might not be exactly a pirate, but his story is so fitting for this book. I hope the author brings us more stories about the men. Hawk seems to be very deserving of a lass of his own.

His Stowaway
Cinderella has nothing on this stepmother
This short story is exactly what you expect when you read a pirate book. The danger, the sea, the jewels, the hot alpha male and the HEA that we love to hear all about are all within these few pages. I enjoyed the way this story took on a life of its own and drug me along for the ride. I can’t wait to read the next book by this author.
