This western historical boxed set includes Daniel's Desire and Stephen's Bride.
Two brothers; one fought for the North, one fought for the South. Now the war is over. Can two determined women heal their hearts?
DANIEL'S DESIRE
When Confederate soldier, Lt. Daniel McCoy makes his escape from a Union prison toward the end of the Civil War, his only thought is to get as far away from enemy territory as possible. But he doesn't count on saving young widow Rosemarie Wilson's life from an infected leg wound.
Rosemarie has no use for Rebels soldiers, having lost everything, including her husband, the last time they came to her home. However, Daniel has not only saved her life, but is sticking around to help with the farm and her three children until she recovers.
With Union soldiers searching for him, every day Daniel remains puts him in danger. Or is the beautiful widow who has captured his heart the greater risk?
STEPHEN'S BRIDE
When Stephen McCoy leaves the home he shares with his brother Daniel, Daniel's wife Rosemarie, and their four children to go into town to load up on supplies, he never expects to return with a bride.
Calliope Bender steps off the stagecoach in a wedding gown, carrying a wilted bouquet. She is running from an unwanted marriage, but needs a husband who will meet her requirements.
Stephen agrees to one of her conditions, but the "marriage in name only" doesn't sit quite well with him. Neither one of them are looking for love, but will it creep up on them when they aren't looking?
My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.
I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.
I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.
Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.
Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com
These are short stories, so the author put them in a boxed set. There is a gap of about two years between the end of the first story and the start of the second.
DANIEL'S DESIRE -- VG+ Amazingly, in only 120 pages, the author tells a complete story. Daniel, a Confederate prisoner, escapes from a Union prison. He has served as a medic to his Confederate co-prisoners. He's exceptionally thirsty and stops at a farm to ask for a drink of well water. However, the young child points a gun at him and tells him to leave. The other children, who are much younger, ask Daniel if he can tend to their mother because she cut her leg while chopping wood. It is touch-and-go because the wound has festered.
Rosemarie is no more pleased to see the Rebel in her home than her children. A group of Rebels had robbed the family of all the food and animals they could find and shot the children's father. Daniel's kindness is in sharp contrast to Hans (the deceased father), who was cold to his wife and children. When Union soldiers come looking for Daniel, Rosemarie hides him. Later, when Daniel is caught and set to hang, Rosemarie goes to the man she used to work for (now governor of the state) to help her save Daniel.
STEPHEN'S BRIDE -- VG Stephen arrives at his brother's farm at the end of the last story. He is wounded and suffering. In the intervening two years, he wants to get land and raise horses like his older brother. However, he wants something of his own. One day, he goes into town for supplies and sees a strange sight. Calliope Bender is on the stagecoach begging someone to marry her. She is dressed in a wedding dress. Intrigued, especially when she stated she has a farm/ranch, Stephen agrees to marry Calliope.
When Calliope keeps treating Stephen like a hired hand, he leaves and returns to his brother's farm. After Rosemarie talks with Stephen, he returns to Calliope to find that her farm is being foreclosed on because her father did not make the last payment before he died.
McCoy Brothers – Total of 2 ** Daniel's Desire (2013) ** Stephen's Bride (2016)
I loved the historical details and the writing style. The Civil War is a bit rough to write about with so much known about the many battles and surrounding events but Callie Button managed to keep your interest throughout both novels. Kudos to Ms. Button and I look forward to reading her additional work.
These two stories were better than me hung on mail order bride stories! So personable, sunk right into the characters and the brothers are like what men should be. Love the sense of family.
The first book is of the oldest brother who escaped from prison during the civil war. He walks for a long time before not being able to continue on and sees a farmhouse. Upon walking up to it, he asks the young children if he can speak to their father for some water and to have a sleep in their barn. The problem is their father's deceased and they only have their mother who has an infected cut on her leg. He knows he needs to help this family and goes in and treats their mother, and helps the family. Soon they feel like they are a true family, but the soldier knows he must move on especially after the visit from other soldiers looking for him. Finally he forces himself to leave only to be capture not long after and scheduled to hang. However, a miracle happens and he gets free and finds himself where he belongs with his little ready made family.
The second book takes up a while after the first. This time it's the younger brother who has been staying with his brother's small family from the first book. Everyone's settled down and happy, but he finds himself wanting the same thing his brother has - a wife that loves him and a family. Being on his own horse ranch would be a big blessing too. One day he goes into town to find a female there wanting anyone to marry her. Come to find out, her father has died and the neighbor next door wants to marry her and will do anything and everything for this to happen. They marry and go to live on her ranch. The problem is his new bride wants everything her way and doesn't consider him anything important on the ranch. Before long he can't continue and leaves. While he's gone the neighbor starts up again and the bride has done everything she can to continue on without anyone's help. Only to find she does need her husband's help. Before long he comes back and try working together.
Both of these books were well thought out and written. The characters and sub characters were loveable and you related to them easily. It seemed the hero's parents played a huge part of who they turned out to be, but not much is written about them. I wish there was more in there about them. But the story and plot were very well written.
A very sweet story with a touch of lovemaking outside of marriage. The kindness of the H came through from the start and I liked him immediately. How he handled the h's children when she was recovering was touching - so much patience.
This boxed set is my 9th story by this author and I enjoy her writing style. This is a sweet simple story that I fell for right away. The character's have charm and strength and the kids added a nice touch.
Some suspense will keep you reading. There isn't an epilogue but I am assuming the H's brother story which is next in the set, will have us visiting this couple again.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance builds quickly and a tiny bit of spice. I can't improve on the blurb, just recommending this story.
STEPHEN'S BRIDE - 4 stars
Very similar to the first - sweet story with just a tad of lovemaking within marriage. I think mildly described only twice. We have a villain, but he is handled with swiftly.
The h took me awhile to like. She does tell the H the terms before they married, but after being together she gets upset when people start thinking of the H as the boss. She wants 100% control of the ranch and her husband to be considered an employee.
I liked that he took a stand and I agreed with his decision. I wanted the h to seek him out, but all worked out in the end. We do get HEA, no cheating, no cliffhanger, a strong H and a feisty h. Another simple story that you leave you with a nice feeling, as in Daniel's Desire.
We do meet up with the H/h from book 1 and I enjoyed we see how their lives are 2 years in the future.
I can't improve on the blurb, just recommending this story too. (ljb).
Daniel & Stephen find their love interests in completely opposite ways. The stories are both strong with good character development and a compelling story line. The reason for the 3 stars is due to a weak finish for each story. I knew there would be a happy ending, but it was anticlimactic and the ending for Daniel’s story was a little implausible. These are quick, easy reads.
Daniel's Desire – 5 stars Daniel McCoy signed up to fight with the Confederate army, which is why his story starts with his escape from a Union prison in Indiana. How he meets widow Rosemarie Wilson and her children, and what happens next is the plot of their love story.
Stephen's Bride – 3.5 stars Stephen McCoy signed up to fight with the Union army, which is why he carries a bullet in his hip long after the end of the war. How he meets Calliope Bender, and what happens next is the plot of their love story.
Overall, I like the writing style and stories in these two stand-alone post Civil War romances. My favorite story was Daniel's Desire, however both stories have sweet happy endings. With the exception of Calliope, the characters in both books were likable and well developed. The author, Callie Hutton, did a good job of pacing each story and maintaining a good balance of thoughts to dialogue.
Content alert: Although the language is mostly clean (except for a few h*lls and d*mns), there are a few mildly described sexually intimate scenes.
I found the stories rather short which was a pity as I was just beginning to get into them. Each story told the tale of one of two brothers, Daniel and Stephen. Both fought in the civil war on opposite sides to each other( yet a big error in book 2 refers to Stephen fighting in The Confederate army). Another error in book 2 has Stephen cooking breakfast. When Calliope, his wife, comes downstairs he asks her what is for breakfast, to which she replies, it depends on what you cook! Poor editing in book 2 let it down big style. Not huge in plot, but a gentle read.
Daniel is in a sorry state when he escapes from prison. Rosemarie is in an even sorrier then he is with her cut. They work together to protect and care for her three children. Add in some war drama and you have a tale
Wow did Calliope needs a attitude adjustment. She doesn’t like how her father treated her mother or herself then she gets a rescue by her new husband and treats him the same way. Thank god Stephen is not anything like her father and with a little whisper from an angel he takes a stand for their marriage.
I was a little confused when the first book said their horse ranch was in Virginia a d in second it was Ky. Also that one brother was Confederate soldier and one Union
I loved these stories. Quick, to the point, yet leaving nothing out of wonderful romantic family life. Leaving me wanting more like these. The connection of family deserves praise♥️
I chose five star rating because both of the books in the series were great. I could not guess the endings or even the middle. I think older teens could read this because of the bedroom happenings.
I was caught up in the story from the beginning and wanted to know what happened next. Wonderful characters and great stories. I will be looking for more of Callie Burton's b
The adventures of two brothers who fought the Civil war on opposite sides and how they found their wives. Both are rather short stories but are very entertaining.
