Though this book is supposed to be a guidebook for children written in the form of a comic, it is more important that both children & parents should read this book and understand why the authors thought of writing it. In our country, the entire neighbourhood, extended family and even acquaintances are interested in how the children are faring in the school. And what was their result? I remember when I was in class tenth, my father’s friend was shocked to see me watching Chitrahaar on TV. Now, thirty two years later, things are worse. The kids have more distractions and the many social media groups make even the remotest of friends or family aware if a kid is appearing for the boards and are want to be updated on the results. This comic book has been narrated in simple english with the conversations between the two main characters, Addy and Ayanka and the challenges they face on the left page. On the right page is the message that the authors want to convey. The language is simple and easy to understand. The Do it Yourself pages at the end of the book are very informative like the priority square, setting the goals, managing time, what to do and what not to do during breaks, concentration drills, mnemonics, self-evaluation grid, and what I loved most is the mock-test checklist. I have made my kids make these DIYs in their diaries and asked them to look at it on a weekly basis. This book is the first in the series and a must read for students and parents. I would also recommend that maybe if these comic strips could be used in social media because that is what is most watched now-a-days so that everyone can make use of the resources, but that is a copyright issue and needs to be dealt with by the publisher and the authors.
#bookreview #bookappreciation Thank you @rupa_publications for this very beautiful book. 'Laugh and Learn with Dr Parikh, comes as a very useful resource for children and their parents especially now that the children are preparing for exams. This is a very child friendly book, it's small in size, beautiful glossy pages with cartoons and also colourful. It is easy to read and to the point. It explains to the kids and parents through the stories of Addy and Anayka.
I especially loved the last section titled DIY where the children can use it for creating their schedules and also implementing the ideas given in the book. My only complain would be that if it could have been of a different layout to be more appealing and aesthetically pleasing
I highly recommend this book for children and their parents.
🔖Book - Laugh & Learn with Dr. Parikh: Study and Exam Skills 🔖Conceptualized By - Samir Parikh, Kamna Chhibber, Divya Jain and Mimansa Singh 🔖Publishers - Rupa Publications 🔖Review - In this highly competitive world mental health has emerged as an issue of grave concern both among the common people as well as the medical fraternity. Never ending pressures like Exam pressure, peer pressure, family pressure etc have converted a child's brain into a pressure cooker, Just like when the pressure cooker is unable to bear the excess pressure it bursts out similarly the brain also collapses in such conditions. In a bid to spread awareness about mental health and address the social and emotional challenges that most children experience in their growing years, Fortis School of Mental Health along with Rupa Publications bring to us this unique and interactive book Laugh and Learn with Dr Parikh: Study and Exam Skills. - It is a self help book that has been designed in the form of a comic series to make children laugh and learn together. - Every concept discussed in the book is universal where each chapter imparts a particular lesson relaxing student's anxiety, stress and the enormous pressure they undergo during studies. - Simple and children friendly language has been used throughout the book. -Students can easily relate with the characters of Addy and Anayka and the challanges they face. - The Interactive Do It Yourself kit given in the last pages of the book will help them execute their study plans more effectively and will also improve their memory and concentration power. - The book contains important piece of advises for the parents too and also underlines the role of time to time breaks and outdoor games during exams.
Highly recommended for all the stressed out students as well as their parents.
So I and my brother read this book over the course of two weeks. And what a tussle we had! We wanted to go fast but since he was having his exams, I wanted him to implement some new tips every day, as well. From my point of view, I think that the inclusion of the illustrations made it a rally very interesting read. The language is quite easy so children can read it on their own. The comic book style is an innovative step! And the smell of the book was beautiful! My brother too loved that it is so simple and yet effective. Unlike some other self-help books (and he has read a few), this one does not beat around the bush and directly points out the ways in which students (or adults even) can implement these. I myself inculcated a few from the book – for instance, even though I knew and had used the Pomodoro technique, I had fallen out of it for a few months. So I again went back to that. There are other amazing exercises as well which can be done to improve your concentration etc. To be very honest, although this book is aimed towards the younger end of the spectrum, I think everyone can benefit from it. I did. It is just that as we grow up we forget the basic rules and tenets that helped us excel back in our schooldays!
An enjoyable, informative and innovative method of motivating children to learn in a fun way. The book is filled with illustrations which accompany an advice. Advice on how parents and children can make learning easier. Be it studying for an exam or just building regular good habits, the book is a handy tool for both the parties. It’s really sad to see that, today even more, some parents cannot let go of comparison. An unhealthy way to motivate a child. The book teaches one how to handle such situations. Comparisons are not encouraged especially when a child is trying to create his/her own niche in the world. The pressure exams bring is invincible. The gloomy cloud lurking on top of each kid right before the exam can be due to uninvited stress and performance pressure. The book teaches both the child and their parents on how to prepare well for exams, how to deal with stress and how to avoid negative advice/feedback. A really quick and handy guide for all new/old parents who are/will be struggling to deal with thei kid’s motivation. A little off age for someone who’s done with “formal education” but it’s still not late to learn and educate self.
This book is an absolute delight and a joy to read. Specially designed for the students and equally useful and helpful for their parents, this book deals about the problems, both mental and physical which the students face especially during the time of their exams. I wish I had such a book to go to during my school days. The book has been illustrated in a phenomenal way and it keeps the reader hooked up and it seems like a comic strip with a strong and a very required message. I would recommend this book each and every student who thinks that exams are the evilest of human inventions. This book also comes with DIY stuff which helps the students to develop concentration and equally boosts up their confidence and motivates them to do better without getting worked up and worried. This is a self-help book with a twist and I believe it surely has the capability of changing the exam life of anyone who reads it.
Success, Failure and the Overall Stress! Oh boy! A tough challenge in this competitive times. And, it is a great initiative by Dr Parikh to talk all about it and give some great pointers in a fun way!
Children and Parents can understand so much about competition, comparison, examination etc. from each of these chapters! There are pages after pages of illustrations with the Doctor's advice on exam preparation, parent's expectation, on breaks, notes, distractions, self evaluation, on sleep and study methods, etc.
It is a must read for children as well as parents to meet the ever increasing challenges and handle examinations in the right manner!
