Miss Fortune Mystery #15

Cajun Fried Felony

Rate this book
Venus Thibodeaux had a reputation for being trouble. Some said she started at birth. When she finally left Sinful shortly after turning eighteen, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. When she blew back into town four years later, no one was happy about her return. She immediately launched into her same old scams, picking off Sinful residents with ease before disappearing again as quickly as she’d appeared.

Everyone assumed she’d headed back to New Orleans.

But when an accident at the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Run uncovers her body, everyone Venus took for a ride becomes a suspect. The man at the top of that list sees the writing on the wall and hires Fortune to figure out who killed Venus, before he goes to prison for a murder he didn’t commit. Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie start poking around into Venus’s complicated life, hoping to find the killer. And to solve their first official case.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won't find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get there by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books.

Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals were injured during these "studies," but they kept makers of peroxide in business.

Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she's still hopeful.

She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.

I love this series! I cannot say enough good things about this book, this series. The plots are always fast paced with plenty of laughter thanks to Gertie. Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie have their first official case as private investigators in Sinful. With the discovery of a body under a basketball goal post at the Thanksgiving Turkey Run, thanks to Gertie, the owner of the Swamp Bar, Whiskey, hires Fortune to help prove that he didn't do it. The finale twist took me totally by surprise. Oh, and that little announcement at the Thanksgiving dinner - oh, my. I cannot wait for the next the next book in the series.
I received a Kindle copy of this book from my library.

Another fun cozy mystery! This is book 15 in the series.

I did predict the killer and the ending, but it was still another fun installment.

I enjoy seeing the gang solve cases. Can't wait to see what's next.

There's a new chickie in town with her eye on Carter, Gertie's pet alligator, Godzilla, has gone missing and Fortune discovers a body under the school basketball hoop. When Whiskey, the owner of the Swamp Bar, rises to the top of a lengthy suspect list he hires Fortune and the team has their first official case. All in a day for Swamp Team Three.

This was my favorite one in the series so far. I adore the progression of Carter and Fortune’s relationship. I’m so grateful for the way the author doesn’t constantly pin them at odds. This investigation could’ve really messed up their relationship, but they didn’t let it because they’re logical, mature adults. Mad respect for pacing and evolution of the romance portion. I also thought this mystery was the deepest and most complicated. I mean, who wouldn’t want to kill Venus?! Pretty sure I made the suspect list by the end. And....spoiler alert... IDA BELLE FINALLY SAID YES! Attaboy, Walter! Needless to say, I downloaded book 16 and hit play immediately.

Sinful's annual turkey trot turns up a gruesome discovery that leads to Fortune's first official case as a private eye. Considering the victim was hated by all the suspect list is overwhelming but Fortune and her sidekicks are up for the challenge.

Another great humorous mystery in the Miss Fortune Mystery series. You could read this as a stand alone but you'll want to read all the books in the series.

I’ll admit that I hadn’t been particularly excited about this installment of the Miss Fortune Mysteries series; the whole “evil, gender transgressive female kind of deserved to die” storyline has never appealed to me.

Still, I was invested enough in the characters that I decided to grit my teeth and take the ride, and I’m glad I did!

Just back from their harrowing Florida vacation, Swamp Team Three gets their vary first case as PIs.

Whisky, owner of and bar tender at the notorious Swamp Bar, is desperate to clear his name before he is charged with a crime that he did not commit.

So, it’s up to Fortune, Gertie, and Ida Bell to find the truth and run his bar (more on that hilarity later).

We’re nearing Thanksgiving, and the folks of Sinful are celebrating the upcoming holiday with their annual Turkey Run.

The competition is to take place on the playground at a local school, which happens to be under construction.

Gertie is more determined than ever to win; she has been outrun and outsmarted by her competitors (they are all children) for years and vows that this year, she will have victory!

The usual Gertieism descends on the competition, complete with frightened animals, property damage, and minor injuries.

When the dust at the playground/construction site clears, Fortune discovers a skeletal hand with a piece of hot pink fabric attached.
Said skeletal hand is determined to belong to Venus Thibodeaux, a home-wrecking, blackmailing, drug running, gang affiliated kleptomaniac who’d recently tromped back into Sinful after lighting out at the age of 18.

With her history, there is no shortage of suspects. Even Gertie is questioned.

Still, most of the circumstantial evidence seems to point at Whisky; he’d discovered that Venus had been cheating on and stealing from him and, in earshot of dozens of witnesses, threaten to kill her the night she died. Add to that his sketchy past and it does not look good.

Carter’s hands are tied; the DA expects him to gather the evidence necessary for building a case and, as I said, it does not look good for Whiskey.
On the whole, this was a good read. I liked seeing Carter beginning to come to terms with who Fortune is and what she does. He is his usual, overprotective, alpha-cop self, but Fortune outmaneuvers him at every turn.

It was also nice to see that Fortune’s relationship with the folks of Sinful (well, we’re not counting Celia or her miserable band of robots) is improving. Many were, and still are, suspicious of her because she is a former CIA agent and a “yanky”, but it appears that folks are gradually coming around and folding her into the community.

We also got to see Swamp Team Three run the rough and tumble Swamp Bar. This was about as hilarious as you might expect, right down to Gertie’s “sexy chief” getup and Fortune’s neat trick with the gun and water bottle.

The barfight and “boat show” will have you rolling around on the floor!

That said, while the investigation part was great, the reveal was underwhelming and predictable. Several of the installments feature killers who are sticky sweet, girl next door, Suzie homemaker types which, I guess, are supposed to make for a bigger shock.

This worked once, but I am beginning to realize that such character’s function as DeLeon’s go-to plot device. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 4 other books that have featured this type of killer, mainly Swamp Spook, Hook Line and Blinker, Hurricane Force, and Gaiter Bait.

As much as it pains me to be critical of this series and author, I have to say that this particular plot device does little to nothing for the books and, more importantly, drowns the “mystery” aspect of the Mis Fortune Mysteries in the bathtub.

Overall, though, this was a great installment, and I am looking forward to the next!

Nothing in Sinful is straightforward or goes to plan! Take the Thanksgiving Turkey Run, anywhere else it would be ... well a run! Maybe 5k, maybe 3 times around the school playing fields, but in Sinful? Not a chance, the turkey run involves running after wild turkeys! in the school playground and it is mainly children, okay 11 children and Gertie, oh and 10 turkeys.  Gertie normally doesn't do too well (which is why they allow her to keep participating with the only grumbles coming from people like Celia), but this year she has managed to grab one, then it escapes and she chases it down, only to disturb a building site, the problem is the building site has someone buried under the concrete and now the Turkey Run has become a crime scene.

When they figure out who it is the list of people wanting her dead could run into the whole of Sinful and probably a lot of New Orleans as well, but the person who apparently saw her last is Whiskey from The Swamp Bar, now he has hired Fortune (and by extension Gertie and Ida Belle) to find out who killed Venus, or at least to prove that he didn't!

I love the Fortune Redding series! They are all well written and I hate putting the book down to go to bed! The books deserve more than five stars they deserve ten stars!
In this latest story the three ladies are at it again. Fortune has her first case and you know that Ida Belle and Gertie will be there helping to solve the mystery. Mustang has hired Fortune to prove he did not kill Venus. Now there are sub stories involved and plot twists. Ida Belle is going to make a very important decision. Read about the turkey race/capture. It is funny but there is a surprise involved. I must admit that Gertie has outdone herself with clothes and the parrot! He is very humorous as if the three together do not add lots of humor, lol!
I like the openness between Carter and Fortune.,read this awesome book and be ready for lots of interesting things happening!

I love this series so much! The plot of this book takes me back to the some of first books, before the danger Fortune was hiding from and her new life choices drove the stories. A small town murder for Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie to solve. More focused on solving the mystery, we get to once again see how the threesome use each other's strengths to 'get their man'. Of course, there are still silly situations and scary situations and romantic situations and laugh-out-loud humour. I loved this book!

Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie are at it again! I absolutely love this series. I listen to it on audio because the narrator takes an awesome story and makes it even better! I have such an amazing picture of the characters and setting in my mind. In this installment, Gertie is participating in the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Run, which of course as it's Sinful and all, isn't your typical 5k. Instead, a bunch of turkey's are let loose and someone has to catch one. Instead of catching a turkey, a series of unfortunate events leads to the unearthing of a skeleton. The bones belong to one Venus Thibodeaux, a rough and tumble woman who caused as much trouble in death as she did in life. The team is hired by the prime suspect to prove his innocence. As usual, the girls get themselves in to a whole boat load of trouble, and as always Gertie ends up naked!!

2.5 Stars! I hated the beginning but loved the rest. This is probably my least favorite book even though some of my favorite things happened in this book. Cajun Fried Felony is book 15 in A Miss Fortune Mystery series. The series is set in Sinful, Louisiana, USA and follows Fortune, who up until book 12 was a CIA assassin in hiding, and old ladies Gertie and Ida Belle, who are lifelong Sinful residents and ex-spy war veterans, as they help solve a string of various crimes and murders.

This series is the first series of Cozy Mystery books that I have read. Cozy Mystery is a new-to-me genre and I am hooked. Once I listened to the first Miss Fortune Mystery series book, I couldn't stop. I have listened to all of the books back to back and now I am super sad that there aren't any more audiobooks yet and there is only one more written book released in the series that I am going to start reading now. I don't know what I will do with out my favorite Sinful characters that I have gotten to know over the past almost month.

I recommend reading/listening to these books in order since each book builds upon the prior book's story and it makes it much more entertaining and enjoyable to go in order. I'm sure you could still enjoy these books as standalone but it won't be the same.

Let me start by saying that I absolutely loathed the first couple chapters in this book. I don't care where you live or what your local traditions are, I will never feel okay about terrorizing animals for sport. I think that is cruel. The activities in the beginning of this book were written in a way that they were meant to be light and funny but I could not get past what those stupid games and contests do to the animals being chased and tackled and used for sport and entertainment prior to their being killed. It adds insult to injury.

Cajun Fried Felony is the Thanksgiving edition of this series. During the course of one of the aforementioned animal terrorizing games, Gertie gertied and had a mishap that uncovered a body that had been hidden. Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie are all set to let Carter handle this one since they don't have any mutual interests that would warrant involvement, but when the signs start pointing to Swamp Bar owner, Whiskey, he hires Swamp Team 3 to investigate the murder so he doesn't go down for something he didn't do. There are lots of twists and turns in this book.

One of my favorite things in Cajun Fried Felony was watching Carter work together with Fortune and the ladies rather than the ladies going behind his back and lying to him. They make a fantastic team. I also really loved that Carter and Fortune are finally telling each other outright that they love one another. They are perfect together so I'm happy to see their relationship continue to develop.

Another side storyline in this book is that Walter asked Ida Belle to marry him...again.

If you like books with a big dose of humor, this is the series for you. I have found myself laughing out loud too many times to count.

The same narrator reads for the whole series. She did great for the first 11 books, then books 12 and 13 were a bit sloppy, almost like she was just rushing through, making errors such as incorrect words read and using the wrong character name. She seems back to usual again so I thought this was a good audiobook. I like that her voices are consistent from book to book. I look forward to more of this series being narrated and hopefully this narrator will be the one to read it.

The Swamp Team 3 gets their first official case when Whiskey, owner of the Swamp Bar, hires them. He’s been fingered in the murder of a young lady he’d been involved with, and since he was one of the last to see her alive he’s the logical suspect. But the young lady wasn’t especially well-liked in Sinful, so there’s no shortage of people with a motive, and time is limited since the DA wants the case sewn up before taking time off for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Carter and Fortune continue their relationship, but in a surprising twist, Ida Belle is seriously considering giving up her spinster status - which could mean an end to the Sinful Ladies Society! Can’t wait to get into book 16!

Excellent book

This one kept me guessing throughout the whole book. About 1/3 of the way, I had an idea...but then my mind changed around based on new evidence. I love this town and the inhabitants and the things that happen. TOTALLY recommend these books for hilarious moments and ability to catch a crook. I did miss the Heberts here, kept thinking they might enter the picture. I also kind of expected Goliath (I think that's the gator's name) to show up to dinner. See....great writing makes one start to be a part of the book.

Cajun Fried Felony by Jana Deleon is the 15th book in the Miss Fortune Mystery series. During Sinful's annual Thanksgiving Turkey Run, a body is uncovered and Fortune is hired by one of the suspcts to find the killer. Another wonderful instalment in the series, which never fails to make me laugh. I loved Gerties new preacher parrot and her handbag is always full of surprises. A very entertaining and fun book, and the Audible narrator makes it that more enjoyable.

Another great read with Fortune and the gang. I will admit to some trepidation on how Fortune would transition to a PI but I was quite pleased with the way it was handled and her first big case. These are always fun reads with lots of laughter, mainly with Gertie being Gertie. I hope the series continues for a long time.

Wow! This book is a 10!

Fortune is hired by the owner of the Swamp Bar to prove he is innocent of murder. The investigation into Venus Thibodeaux's murder turns up more suspects than you'd think, and more depravity than even Celia's daughter caused, if that's possible?

Laughter, suspense, red herrings everywhere, and some of the biggest surprises you'll ever read.

2020 bk 108. Venus was trouble, her major purpose in life was to bring misery to others. It shouldn't have been so surprising then that the annual turkey run (involving Gertie, nuff said) resulted in the discovery of Venus' body and the Swamp Team's first real PI gig. Hijinks ensue as the team works to solve the mystery and Fortune prepares(?) for her first thanksgiving in Sinful, Louisiana.

Another laugh-out-loud adventure with my three favorite characters: Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie! There's never a dull moment when they set out to solve the mystery, and this one's a doozy since the murder victim is tops on everyone's "hate" list!! I can always count on Jana Deleon to give me a respite from today's current reality!!

Jana DeLeon never disappoints. Lots of chuckles and plenty of laughs.

Unfortunately, to me the murderer was obvious. It was kind of disappointing to have the characters say the simplest explanation is usually the answer but they deemed to be following the more complex explanations.

But that was really a minor issue as it was so much fun to see Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie, trying to figure it out with lots of misadventures along the way.

This was a fun light read to get my mind off the concerns of the day
