I went ahead and read the second volume, and I liked it quite a bit more? We get more of a sense for Mei's character. My armchair psychologist says she reacts like someone who has had an abusive past? When she's trying to connect with someone and feels vulnerable, she pushes for sex and says things like "Please I'll do anything, I'm very good at following commands." And she has no regard for others' consent, but it's not out of a sense of power over them? It's more like a desperate move to get the relationship into a context she can understand (a really unhealthy one, ps). Idk, it has so many red flags that someone at some point when she was younger, that was maybe the only way she got any affection. But that's probably *way more nuanced* than this book is able to go. And I could also be wildly wrong. Or maybe I'm just trying to make excuses for the blatant consent violations throughout the book. ugh. idk.

Like when her little friend with the curls suddenly makes things sexual. She freezes up and looks terrified and passive, doesn't tell anyone what happened, and goes home in a daze. Idk that to me says ptsd and abuse, but again - armchair psychologist here.

That last scene, though. They were finally connecting on a level that was emotionally honest and real, and naturally the kissing that happened was also honest and real. I was SO HERE FOR THIS. I hope the series continues in that direction.

This is my guilty pleasure series for sure.

So last we left off the sisters were kind of drifting apart. Not really getting along all that well. This time we have a new love interest who pops up for Mei. However, Mei doesn't seem to want this attention. She seems to want to be left alone but in this volume she'll have to deal with a sister who cares for her as well as her dad returning into her life.

Good: Watching the sisters actually bond is kind of nice. Also, the dad stuff, and losing family actually was pretty well done (despite Mei dad being a piece of shit). Also, the lesbian kissing stuff is hot, yeah I'm shallow in that way, what can I say.

Bad: Some of the humor falls flat, which is usually a problem with me in manga anyway. I also thought the new love interest was kind of silly but I can see her being a problem later.

Overall, still silly, over the top, and not too much substances but it's still a ton of fun. A 3 out of 5.

Mei's dad and her best friend enter the mix to add some conflict. We also find out why Mei has such a stick up her butt all the time.

People ask me if I have 'guilty-pleasure' reads. The answer, plain and simple, is no.
I mean...
Do I still unironically read Gorillaz fanfiction? Yeah. But I don't feel guilty about that. Not gonna count it in my challange (whiiich explains a lot...) but I feel no guilt. I like it, I read it.
But.
Citrus, inside and out, feels like something I ought to be above, as far as reading goes. Stepsisters falling in love (in this volume, they're accompanied by Mei's vice student body president, Himeko, who immediately identifies Yuzu as a threat to their 'relationship').

"The President and I...have a much deeper relationship than you two will EVER HAVE!"

It's just that these are teenagers and, despite the fact I still just barely have "teen" in my age, I'm a grown person. It's very squicky and if ya wanna judge me for it, judge away.
But I want to make something clear.
Citrus isn't thinly veiled porn (known as pwp in the fic world, I regret to admit I know).
It's treated with respect for how old the characters are, I'd say, and is not marketing itself at otaku boys with unhealthy love for the coveted hashtag known as #animetitties.
Citrus, while it does use the relationship between the two girls as your doorway into their lives, is a very emotional, dramatic story with a lot of themes; none of which stand out stronger or better than to be yourself, whatever that may entail.

We met Mei's father (Yuzu's stepfather) in this volume, too. I like how Uta presented him as a character you were allowed to make up your own mind on- not in herently good, not inherently villainous. Was he wrong to leave Mei, a teenager, in charge of a school she's supposed to inherit? Yeah. Of course.
But at the same time, we see him as a loving, befuddled father who thought, by finding his duaghter a mother to watch over her, he'd done his job and was free to do good across the world, opening schools and teaching underprivileged children.
He's not perfect, and he's probably not trying that hard as far as parenting goes, either. But he does love Mei, and he wants her to be herself.
His interactions with Yuzu, who he immediately accepts as his daughter, were very touching. Hope he returns.

"There is no 'right way' to live. If nothing else works, blaze your OWN trail."

Mei and Yuzu's characterization marched on well in this volume, too.
From what they are outside of stepsisters-

"You... You need me, don't you?"
"...I don't WANT it like this!"

To what they are in every sense of the word.

"Don't you ever think about anyone else's feelings?!"
... "Don't you ever think before you ACT?"

I didn't think vol. 1 could be eclipsed, but Uta did an even more amazing job with this one.

art specs

Oh, sweet baby Jesus. I don't deserve this.

Citrus was optioned for an anime after its massive sucess as a comic. I'm not worried at all about how it translates (I've already seen some of the first episode and it's just -wow-
Uta's fluid, almost panel-less at times art is an absolute gem. In a type of art largely dominated by the same few styles, Uta brings a unique, recognizable one to this book.

Its gorgeous. Like Kazu Kibuishi and Hajime Isayama, Uta takes interesting chances that always pay off.

Citrus is an must-read if you love a lotta drama bombs with actual fleshed out characters, identity crisis, petty rivalries and a lot of characterization to bounce off of.

I'm loving the storyline, and after one rival goes, another one came.
But mei should be more open to her feelings, and open up to Yuzu, instead of only when she was uncomfortable with matsuri, and stop having the idea that all Yuzu wants is to touch her,and offer it for the sake of love.

Summary: We kissed again but you're still indifferent.

PS: Too much focus on Mei's father.

I am not sure why I bothered picking up the second volume in this series. I was hoping it would get better and rectify the mistakes written into the first volume, but it didn't. Again, this had so much potential but instead it was full of consent, sexual assault and incest issues. It was not what I was expecting at all. The art, as with most manga, was incredible but the storyline itself was jumpy and there was virtually no character developments or personality.

I like Himeko and Yuzu's little rivalry, but also the fact that romantically Himeko doesn't stand a chance. I like Harumi and Yuzu's friendship so much. I love how close they are and how Harumi's love language is probably physical touch. Platonic romance is such an awesome thing and I feel like that's their friendship. Fuck Mei's dad for real. For some reason I feel like parents leaving their kids to "follow their own path" is a pretty common trope in anime/manga and its actually insane. Like not seeing her dad in 6 years because he wants to travel the world, dont even play rn. She has no responsibility to make things right with him or forgive him. He literally left at the end of the book without saying anything even after knowing how sad Mei is about him and like Yuzu had to get Mei to chase him down to literally see him one last time bruh. Usually Mei and Yuzu's intimacy happens in moments of distress so it was exciting how their last kiss was different.

You may be wondering how I ended up here again. Curiosity got me… but I still hate this. I’m going to hate read this series. Yuzu is a great character and is really the only reason I’m continuing…

Sorry, but even with a 3 stars, I am dropping this series from this volume on.

Mei is just so horrendous. And yes, I know her daddy isn’t there (dick), he left years ago (again I am wondering how Yuzu’s mom met him), but that is no need to be a manipulative bitch who only wants to kiss/assault Yuzu whenever she is feeling down/sad/angry or whatever. This is not how you treat people girl. This is not at all how you treat people. You know about Yuzu’s feelings and you just toy with them like they are nothing. Either accept Yuzu, accept that you want her because you love her, or just don’t do it at all. Now you are only hurting someone close to you and that is a big no no.

And not only that but Mei’s moods just got annoying. Seriously, again, I know she is not really the best emotionally with stuff that happened, but that is still no excuse to be so hot and cold in her life. Nice one time, the next distant, the next a total bitch. Bleh, what a crap character.

Yuzu on the other hand is the only reason why I wanted to try it again, why I wanted to check out the second volume. Because Yuzu? Yuzu is amazing. She is strong, determined, willing to do anything and everything for her friends and family. But you can also see she doesn’t have it all too easy, but unlike Mei, doesn’t go around having mood swings as big as the Mount Everest.
I felt so sorry for her. Her love for Mei is still all new, she is so confused, and then you have the girl you love treat you like this.

Momokino was slightly better in this one, though I thought the thing she did when Yuzu and Mei were on a trip was just plain creepy and stalkerish. Go away. Shoo.

The art is still gorgeous, and is also the reason why the manga scores so high for me.

But would I recommend this one? No. Nope. Never. There are enough other Yuri/Shoujo-ai manga out there that are way better and deserve more love than this one.

My main problem with this volume is that I don't really like Mei. While I understand where she's coming from - basically she's a deeply depressed person - I also find her irritating, and I worry that Yuzu likes because she thinks she can/must save her. This is one of the few romances where I hope things don't work out between the main couple...but have no intention of stopping reading it until the end.

Yuri really is a lot more innocent than Yaoi. I'm not generally dissatisfied, I like that the characters aren't being over-sexualised (no ecchi, no fanservice, no supersized boobs and constant show of almost-naked bodies). But still. From the covers you'd expect this series to be more sexual, while it's actually been quite tame so far. There have been hints at some development though, so I'm saving hope for things to get more steamy in the next volumes.

Beautiful artwork and an interesting twist on the standard "opposites attract" romcom plot. Some of the plot elements are so exaggerated as to be ridiculous, though -- Mei's father is such an unbelievably terrible parent, for one, and it's hard to imagine that a caring mother like Yuzu's would put up with the way he neglects his daughter.

Citrus 2 o Daddy is here!

3.75. I'm surprised more and more by how much emotion this series is taking on. Yuzu and Mei are getting closer all the time, but there's always something tripping them up - health, friends, family... What's next?

Trashy guilty-pleasure yuri manga. Read them all in one day, wouldn't re-read. The relationships are toxic and problematic. The drawings are beautiful though, loved the art style.
