If you love small towns, endearing relationships, food, animals, and a touch of murder, you will love this cozy mystery series.
In book 7, Tess and Brady are planning a haunted house fundraiser so they can expand the shelter to include a top of the art training facility as well as a permanent residence for hard to place animals. During the decorating party they find a skeleton - a real skeleton - hidden behind a false wall in the attic. They turn the skeleton over to Mike but once they do everything starts going wrong and Tess wonders if they haven't somehow managed to awaken an angry spirit. Mike thinks Tess is letting her imagination run away with her but she trusts her instinct so, with Tony's help, she begins to dig around on her own. The deeper they dig the more they find including a second more recent body hidden within the creepy old house.
Meanwhile, Bree and Mike are adjusting to married life, Tess finds out something alarming about her father's life before he met her mother, and plans are underway for another Thomas Thanksgiving.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

This one was great, the perfect read to kick off my Halloween theme read (I have 10 Halloween books lined up to read over the next month. Want to join in? Stop in to r/CozyMystery on Reddit!
With a juicy plot (I love when old houses have secret staircases and bodies hidden in secret rooms!) and not one but 2 bodies, an old one and a new one. Loved the investigations into both and that haunted house sounded like somewhere I'd like to visit.
A really good Halloween read featuring the regular cast of characters. The haunted house sounded awesome, with the backstory of the house they were using being gruesome and very sad. My biggest 'beef' is that I felt that the one who 'dunnit' kind of came out of left field. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the next installment of the series.
Alas, this might be my last Tess and Tilly novel. I'm really torn because I'm very attached to these characters and I want to know what happens in the long-term mystery but the way the 'unique to each book' mystery plays out is starting to bother me. Maybe because I've been reading them back to back? And the grand finale always seems to be a wrap up in conversation. We're not actually there in real time. So, I guess what I'm saying is the mysteries are all tell, not show. Plus, this mystery was very similar to the fourth book which I just read last week so...time to take a break at least. :-(
I enjoyed this 7th in the series. A haunted house fundraiser is being set up when a real skeleton is found. Things get more chaotic when a newer dead body is found. I enjoy these characters and can easily get involved in the story. I loved the back story of the skeleton, it kept me turning the pages. The newer dead body mystery was good, and unexpected. I will continue on with this series.
The Halloween Haunting by Kathi Daley was another cute cozy set in White Eagle. Tess and Tony and involved in creating a haunted house fund raising event for the local animal shelter. However, they find a skeleton and then a dead body before the event even begins. Easy read with likable characters and a murder mystery that kept me turning the pages.

Review:
The writing style flows smoothly and defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and her descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. One of these days I would like to go through a haunted house from one of the cozies that I read, that would be awesome.
The characters are well developed and well rounded. I really like the way that Tess and her family and friends get along and how much they love each other. And the animals added a lot to the story, as they usually do.
There are two mysteries in this book, which is very typical for this author. There were plenty of clues to sift through for the recent murder and supects to consider and it was not easily solved.
I would recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you want to lose yourself into a good mystery, grab this book.
“The Halloween Haunting” earns 5/5 Haunted Houses...Entertaining Fun!
Trick or treat? It’s a big TREAT! Kathi Daley has once again penned another great book filled with true Halloween spirit. This seventh book of her Tess and Tilly Mystery series, with a delightful writing style, has a well-written, clever mystery, or more, with descriptive language, another set of great family and friends to support an admirable and strong female lead, and dialogue that best illustrates the tone and personalities. Arranging a fundraiser to facilitate upgrades and expansion plans is a no-brainer and choosing to have a haunted house event in October seems a great idea. Even Haunting America is set to film the purportedly haunted house in an upcoming episode hopefully sparking interest and making for a successful fund-raiser. However, the century-old house with its particularly curious electrical issues, fake wall, secret room, and suspicious noises may be more problematic...but not as problematic as discovering a skeleton or finding a more recently deceased. Fascinating history. Cemetery relocation. Suspicious accidents. Mysterious deaths. Pranks. And a skeleton and a body. Just another Halloween! Along with the intriguing mysteries one would like to attribute to the supernatural, the more traditional motives like business rivals, competition, and just plain revenge seem easier to investigate. As I’ve pointed out before, Kathi always does well incorporating the holidays into her work with festivities, pumpkins, and haunted houses, but the focus is always on family with newlywed angst, relationship woes, and intriguing family revelations. All in all a delightful story no matter the time of the year...I highly recommend the series, and starting with book seven is a great way to herald in the holidays!
In this next book of the series Tess is excited to be helping out Brady with a Haunted House Fundraiser. They are trying to earn money to build a bigger facility so that Brady can add an area for training and somewhere for animals that can't be placed. Tess finds the perfect home to turn into their haunted house but soon learns that their is more behind the story of the abandoned home they plan to use. While fixing some issues to get the place ready for use they find not only a skeleton but the dead body of one of their volunteers. The skeleton was in a hidden room but how did the other body get in there with him? The room had been closed off and seeing no other possible entrances Tess knows that, that is a mystery they need to figure out. Meanwhile it seems as if the house is actually haunted, the electricity although it has been checked out acts up at weird times, walls have been changed from one color to the next, and objects have been moved. Tess wants the fundraiser to go off without a hitch and to be a success at the same time but with everything that is happening it has her worried. Follow along as she steps up to investigate all the strange goings on and not only looks for a killer for the body but one for the skeleton too. Will she be able to answer all the questions that keep popping up or will she be left with a puzzle that can be solved. When she thinks she is figuring things out a curve ball is thrown her way that has to do with her father. This was a great read with several twists and turns and I also enjoy the continuing mystery surrounding Tess's father. I can't wait to see what she gets into next and how she will deal with what is thrown her way.
It’s a good thing I read this series for the characters. There wasn’t any sleuthing really into the murder. I was more interested in the secondary mystery, the skeleton in the hidden room. I also like the ongoing mystery about Tess’s father. But the characters and pets are what I come back for book after book.
Not my favourite in the series, not a lot happening in the relationships. I enjoyed the mystery from the past but the current murder being investigated didn't really grab my attention. Curious to see how the next book in the series plays out.
The Halloween Haunting is the seventh book in Kathi Daley’s awesome Tess and Tilly Cozy Mystery series. I love all of the wonderful, well-developed characters as well as the charming setting. As with all her books, Ms. Daley has provided readers with a clean, fun read, caring and compassionate characters, intriguing mysteries to try to solve, and lots of adorable dogs and cats. The mysteries are well-plotted and interesting. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted cozy mysteries.
Tess Thomas delivers mail for the USPS along with her dog, Tilly, who accompanies her on her route. Tess enjoys delivering the mail and visiting with the town’s residents and business owners in the small community of White Eagle, Montana. She has one brother, Mike, who’s a member of the White Eagle Police and who recently married her best friend, Bree Price. Her mom, Lucy Thomas, co-owns a café, Sisters’ Diner, with her aunt, Ruthie Turner. Tess is dating her other best friend, Tony Marconi, a computer genius. In addition to being a mail carrier, Tess is an animal shelter volunteer. She works closely with Brady Baker, the local veterinarian and shelter owner, to train and place animals with people who are a perfect match for each other. With Halloween approaching, Tess decides sponsoring a haunted house will be the perfect event to raise money for the shelter to provide extended training as well as a permanent home for hard to place animals. The house Tess has chosen requires some repairs, and she has lined up lots of volunteers to provide the materials and labor needed. The electrical system is giving them fits, and as Tony tries to narrow down the problem, he notices an oddity in the house and discovers a skeleton hidden behind a false wall in the attic, which leads to another shocking discovery.
The Halloween Haunting (A Tess and Tilly Cozy Mystery) is the seventh in this series. It is the Halloween Season. A time for pumpkins, witches, ghosts and Haunted Houses. Tess along with her boyfriend Tony Marconi are working with Barry Baker to prepare an empty house that has been rumored to be haunted and built on an old graveyard. It is meant to be used for a fund raiser for the expansion of the animal shelter so they could house animals who are not able to be placed in forever homes. With Tony's electronic knowledge and the help from the community volunteers, a skeleton is found and another body is found on the widow's walk. Tess and Tony work with Tess's brother Mike, Chief of the Police Department to determine who the skeleton is and find out the killer of the body on the Widow's Walk. All the while there are strange happenings at the house that need to be explained. You will not be able to put this book down because of the desire to find out the answers.
This book was written with a perfect insight into Halloween. Tess and her friends are working on getting a haunted house set up for Halloween and lots of scary things happen even before the haunted house opens for business, including the finding of two bodies, one a skeleton. The mysteries certainly kept this book moving along. I never did figure out who the murderer was (until the end)! I highly recommend this book as a great Halloween read!
It's Halloween in White Eagle so we have a Haunted house, a skeleton, a dead body, a mystery surrounding Tess' dad and a maybe sister. Lots of mysteries and lots of twists and turns.
I really love Tess, her dog Tilly and all the other characters we come to love in this series. This time Tess, Tilly and Brady are putting on a haunted house as a fundraiser to expand the shelter. While getting the house ready, they come across a skeleton hidden in the wall in the attic. Upon further investigation they also find a dead body in the clock tower. Even though Mike is investigating the skeleton and the murder, you know that Tess and Tony have to do their own investigation. So who is the skeleton and how long has it been hidden in the wall. Who killed the man in the clock tower. This takes us on quite a roller coaster ride before all is revealed.
On a side note, Tess discovers some disturbing information about her dad before he married her mom. This story is throughout the series and keeps us guessing.
This is another great read in the Tess & Tilly mystery. The author really knows how to keep the reader engaged throughout her books. If you like a good mystery with some romance thrown in, this series is for you.
This is twice in 24 hrs I have written a review which disappeared into cyberspace!! AARRRGGGHHHH! Deep breath, start again! Whew! I really liked this book! A mystery that I didn't figure out until immediately before the reveal!! If you read as many mysteries as I do this won't be a spoiler, the only predictable thing was that "the most suspicious character didn't do it"!! AND I read it on Halloween!! The storyline was good & it was clean! It took on some pretty mature topics, but was written in such a way that I think I would have allowed my daughter to read it while in her early teens! But she was quite mature for her age, too. The characters were great, & included two of my most favorite things: animals which add so much to a story, & a grand old mansion! I've always wanted to revive an old home, & there are many around here, especially Antebellum & Victorians. I wish I'd been able to afford to fix up & save as least one!! I always think, "if walls could talk!"! This one would talk your ears off! I've read a few of Ms. Dailey's books & plan to read more. I'd suggest that you not put this one off until next Halloween! So the holiday is over! Read it anyway! In my eyes, Halloween is only the backdrop for the story, not the story itself!
I’ve read a ton of cozy mysteries this spring of 2020 because I need a switch from depressing news of the virus. Daley is as good an author of this genre as any of them and I generally like her characters but I am glad I’m nearing the end of this series.
Typical structure- savvy, plucky, independent female solves murder mysteries although that isn’t her day job. She has a wealthy, handsome boyfriend who cooks! Loves dogs and knows everyone in the small town where she lives.
This one re-uses a Halloween theme that she used earlier in the series and has quite a few typos or actually incorrect words which makes me wonder why she skimped on the editing? Maybe she’s no longer writing the books herself, always a disappointment.
I hope to finish out the series because she’s had some interesting themes running but maybe it’s not worth it.
Its Halloween again and Tess is organising a fundraiser for the local animal shelter, the biggest so far! A haunted house with all the scary effects. What she doesn't organise is the skeleton in the false wall and a much fresher body on the clock tower! All the usual characters are involved in this event.
Easy to read cozy mysteries with romance and every day life thrown in, set in the small town of White Eagle. Underlying each story is the ongoing mystery of Tess's Father's disappearance, and this time, what she finds out is disturbing if its true!
These books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.
I really enjoy these books, I've read several other series by the same author as they are all as good, so if you're looking for escapism then try this author's books, they're worth it.
It's nice to be back in White Eagle. I enjoyed the story - strange old house, haunted house event, clock tower, widow's walk and rainy nights.... Of the two concurrent mysteries, I preferred the older rather than the current one. A body that had been walled in always feels sinister and sad somehow. I love Tess's speculations whenever she spoke with Tony and Bree. I got to say that Mike does not behave like the police. He sounds very naive and it's pretty funny how he gets to discuss murder cases with his sister and friends. However, I really do love the gang and am now getting more curious about Tess's dad. I can't wait to explore more of Kathi Daley's collection.
Tess is on another adventure .This time she is taking an old house that may or may not be haunted and Turing it into a haunted attraction to raise money to expand the animal shelter. She has enlisted help from her bf Tony and dozens of volunteers She even gets a tv show called haunted America show to do a piece on the house. While everything seems to be going ok someone decides to do some pranks . But the real problem is when 2 bodies are discovered in a hidden room. Who are these people and what happened to them? Tess's brother will have to investigate. This is a quick, clean cozy read. It was easy to follow . It takes place during spooky season . I enjoyed it.
I enjoy reading books built around a central theme or quest. This series has a set of real characters without pretensions or underlying motives. They are really nice honest people doing good things in a beautiful setting. It’s comforting to be a part of their White Eagle, Montana community. Even if they are dealing with murders and long ago mysteries. I have enjoyed reading this series and look forward to the next book which may or may not answer the last questions.
I’ve been wanting to read more cozy mysteries lately. I’ve needed an escape from the craziness of the world. The Halloween Haunting was just what the doctor ordered. I loved the setting in small town Montana and all of the characters. The whodunnit wasn’t retraceable at all, which is usually a requirement for a good murder mystery but I’m willing to let it slide because it was such a cute plot. The killer wasn’t even mentioned before they were revealed, so the readers could never have connected the dots. But like I said, I’ll let it slide. 4 out of 5 stars.
Part of this book seems as if it's been written by a different author!!!🤔 Either a different author has taken over or Kathi is taking an English class . 🙄 The writing has big cumbersome words and has lost the smooth easy flow of the other books. 🙁 I almost put this one down, but as you can see, I am on the 7th book in the series, so I pushed on.😔 It did get better toward the end.🙂 I am now hopeful that the next book will be back to normal!!!😁
A similar format to a previous book in the series. There were also some editing issues with both spelling and word usage that were a bit puzzling. Overall, I like the characters, and the basic predictability of the plot progression can be relaxing after more intense novels. I just wish the murderer didn't really come out of nowhere and the mc/related was involved in the overall solution. It just seemed served up and not investigated.
Not too enameled with this story but it has some interesting plots and new material as well.
Tess finds out some interesting and distressing news but then decides to wait and see what if anything, develops. The animals close to her heart will get their new home, and that makes me happy.
The haunted house appears haunted, and the story behind the skeleton is a sad one.
Just when you think things are mostly resolved, more mystery and twists come up. Will there be a wedding in the next book? How will that change Tess life? Or will it? Tony seems to only want to make Tess happy but will he balk at something she wants but he doesn't? Will she finally agree to meet Nona??
Being one of those mystery readers who want things wrapped up with a logical explanation, this book in an otherwise enjoyable series, really bugged. The guilty party didn't make sense and no logical explanation was provided.
Mystery abounds surrounding the haunted house! Repairs, vandals, treasure hunters, and ghost hunters keeps the excitement flowing through this fund raising haunted house. Tess discovers a possible link to her father with previous consequences.
