Hot Off the Ice #5

Boys of Summer

Rate this book

Teammates, roommates, friends with benefits. What could go wrong?

Boys of Summer is a book about finding the perfect person to ride shotgun with on the crazy road trip called life. It contains a Dolly Parton lookalike, an unfortunate deer versus car incident, and poorly-timed epiphanies.

Everybody leaves. That was the first lesson Thunder goalie James McVicker ever learned. The second lesson was that if you don’t want to hurt, don’t let yourself get attached. Patrick O’Reilly is the best friend Vicky’s ever had. So obviously when Vicky finds himself possibly, maybe stupidly, falling in love with the guy, it only makes sense for him to leave first, right? So why does it feel like he’s just made the biggest mistake of his life?

Patrick O’Reilly loves being in love. He loves the romance and hearts and flowers of it all, but he hates the way it always seems to end. Friends are simpler. Friends don’t break your heart. Luckily, he has the greatest best-friend-slash-teammate-slash-roommate in the world. Hanging out with Vicky is as easy as breathing, and despite Paddy’s initial fears, adding some epic benefits of the sexual kind to their friendship only makes it better. He’s certainly not going to ruin things by doing something as stupid as falling in love. Obviously, Vicky isn’t in love with him. He’s just confused by all these stupid weddings. If Paddy can get him to talk, they can work all this out and get back to being friends again.

The course of true love never did run smoothly, but maybe with the help of their friends and family and some last-minute divine intervention, what started as a road trip could turn into the adventure of a lifetime.

5 Stars!

I am such a fan of this series and the guys in the books. AE W keeps the stories fresh with every book.

Vicky and Paddy have to be my favorite couple of them all. But I think I missed a book before this one so we'll see. I definitely need to go back and read it. Back to Vicky and Paddy. They are the best of friends who have been riding a flirtatious line only one was noticing. But when Vicky points out Paddy's behavior to him, it's like a coming to Jesus moment. They both admit they're attracted to one another and agree to have some fun with a friends with benefits deal. Things heat up after that but in a slow way. Not slow in the sense they don't have many sexy times together. Slow in the way in how far they take things. It's slow build up to penetration sex. They weren't sure if they wanted to take it there because it felt like if they crossed that line things would change. And they did.

The fact that they were already so close helped this relationship build up so smoothly. They had crazy chemistry. The banter was on point and had me laughing quite often. What this author is so good at is making her stories flow with an ease. You never feel the length of them. I always end up wanting more in the end because you feel like you really get to know these characters and I just want to continue to hang out with them. They feel like friends in the end.

I love a good road trip book and these boys had a blast. They explored the land and each other. I enjoyed all the side characters and the big families. I highly recommend it.

Happy reading dolls! xx

This was overall pretty good. I loved reading the roadtrip, need to find more books that take place on a roadtrip. Overall an enjoyable read

And I really appreciate the time and care the author put into building this universe- I mean every book includes a huge family tree with information on every family member and the hockey team roster with info on every player - but wow it was just way too much. So so much time spent on detailed information of every side character. Pages just talking about all the side characters. It was way too much. That level of detail about side characters is not necessary and actually took away from my enjoyment of the book. I would skim/skip entire chapters and it didn’t take anything away from the plot. This book should have been 200 pages shorter.

I've enjoyed this series but there were just too many inconsistencies throughout every book for me to rate any of them higher.

Character names kept completely changing or being misspelled between books, and even within the same paragraph so it was confusing and frustrating.

Events kept changing e.g. book 1 someone had never been to the ocean, book 5 they're going to the ocean because they've only been once.

They aren't massive things but they add up and are really noticeable when you binge read the series.

I liked every character in the series but everything was very surface level - serious issues were touched on but it never went very deep so there was never an emotional connection to any of the storylines, and everything resolved too easily.

A friends to lovers DREAM COME TRUE.

This was SOOOOO good and really pushed all of my buttons. I’m truly obsessed. I cried a lot!

One of my favorite things is when the reader is able to fall in love with the characters separately before falling in love with them as a couple. Even though Paddy and Vicky were inseparable from the start (as friends), we’re still able to get their individual personalities without it being about the other person. It’s so important, especially in character-driven novels.

This was just, like, the perfect rom com. You have rowdy hockey boys, exploring sexualities, a road trip of a life time, ALL the weddings, and a diverse and hilarious cast of characters that will just melt your heart.

Just divine!

It has been a while since I read the previous books in this series so when I got my hands on this one I was looking forward to read about hot hockey players and the way they get caught by cupid's bow. Not a big sport fan myself I love reading though about hockey and the players, and may I say I appreciate that those players have to wear suits?! So this is Paddy's and Vicky's book, both playing for the Thunder in Seattle. They are best friends and may have an even bigger interest in each other but both are emotionally not ready to deal with it. Classic male ideas is of course "friends with benefits" and going on a road trip. Both I am not adverse to, so I could immerse myself into Patrick's awakening to have more than friendly feelings for his best friend and James' epic journey of learning to cope with his fear of abandonment. It was a great read, I loved seeing all the previous characters come together for the multiple weddings Paddy and Vicky were attending and loved the family dynamics of the O'Reillys and the Lucianos.

I really liked this instalment, it had some angst and it stirred my emotions more than the previous ones. I have to say though that I would have liked this story more if there were a few less secondary characters, it got very confusing. Overall, I loved this series and hope it continues.

One very small niggle and probably a stupid one but the book says the legal drinking age in Canada is eighteen but it's only eighteen in three of our Provinces -Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec- in the rest it's nineteen. In fairness the Province where said drinking took place the legal drinking age is eighteen. Kudos to all the other Canadian references and all the hockey jargon and stats!

3.5 stars. With this one, I'd accepted the writing style that came with previous books, it really needed editing and proofreading with the typos. After getting past that, the story here for the last one in the series is more laid back and chill, with fewer stakes than certainly the previous one with Liam and Joey since Patrick and Vicky aren't as prominent stars, so it was nice to follow along with them on their journey to realizing their love for each other. I enjoyed the pairing between Patrick O'Reilly and James McVickers here, how Paddy is this social guy who has always been surrounded by friends and family, and is comfortable being assured in that love. While Vicky has had this weird childhood and a more solitary one, raised by his grandparents turned parents, and while he's an affable guy, is not used to letting people in as much and feels overwhelmed and scared to fully love Patrick. I also appreciated that bit of Patrick especially reflecting on his status as a hockey player, being content with his career so far but also now wondering if he could be better, him having talent but always doubting himself too much.

This focused a lot more on their friendship status where it was basically that they dated without the label, no matter the label of friends with benefits, and I liked this angle on their relationship and how it led Paddy from being bi-curious to realizing his romantic feelings for men. Their road trip after they were done with hockey season takes up most of the book, and I enjoyed their adventures (the deer hitting them! all the national parks and lovely farmland hippie Colorado that make me miss the US!), and seeing Bryce and Dakota from first book tying the knot, all the cast of characters previously with not just the pairings Alex-Sergei/Paul-Robbie/Joey-Liam, but also their extended family members and kids and other friends. (They're all very progressive, some talking points that resonate through this entire series. Though seriously, the family is rather too close where it gets unhealthy, and I wonder if the Nico brother who cheated with Liam's ex and the one who lives overseas, others not as mentioned kind of distanced themselves to breathe a bit.)

The book basically meanders and is just them going on the road trip and finally evolving their limbo flirty best friend status, but it's alright because I accepted it and was along for that ride. All in all I really enjoyed the dynamic of Paddy and Vicky, where they start out as inseparable best friends as the foundation that build on their chemistry, and I'm glad overall that I read this series-- I need my fix of this specific subset of M/M hockey romance!

This novel is intricately layered and richly complex with multiple story-lines weaving seamlessly together. There’s the road trip, the hockey aspects, Vicky’s grandfather, Paddy’s extended family (& they are as marvellous as always) and, centre to it all, the relationship and all the confusion, joy, heartbreak and self-discovery this entails. The entire book is a roller coaster of emotion, with Wasp artfully pulling the reader from angst to tears-streaming-down-your-face laughter; from serious dialogue to light, witty banter and from hot, steamy sexual explorations to the hysteria only the Lucianos and O’Reillys can elicit. There’s also a stunningly beautiful wedding that brought tears to my eyes.

As readers have come to expect from Wasp, the dialogue is top-notch, weaving from snark to heart-warming to humorous with ease (& often in one scene). No spoilers, but a line by Jake early in the book had me laughing so hard I almost wet my pants. There’s a text message exchange near the end that had me cringing in mortification and sympathy (while also laughing so hard I snorted). And, there’s a throw-back to a previous books’ scene: “Is there an alpaca in the petting zoo,” Joey asked as he and Liam joining the party. “Coach Williams promised me I could pet an alpaca.” This type of nugget really rewards readers of the whole series; the book could be read as a stand-alone, but with this kind of tight writing, memorable characters and smoking romance, why would you want to?

Wasp proves she’s not just using sports as a hook to gain readers but truly knows and loves the game of hockey. She also has a great outlook on family dynamics and anytime there’s scenes with the Lucianos and O’Reillys, my heart warms.

Sadly, this novel theoretically completes the Hot off the Ice series. And while I can admit that everything is wrapped up very neatly and satisfyingly, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to send out a plea to reconsider, unwrap and carry on because I love the Seattle Thunder world so much.

I really have a soft spot for AE Wasp's books and I can't point my finger on just why. I mean they're usually funny and this one was hysterical with big man-children with the senses of humor of 12 year olds, which is right up my alley. Her books are usually low-medium angst which is good for my nerves because as much as I like high-angst books, they make me nervous as hell.

Patrick and Vicky were unbearably sweet with a lot of sexy times. I love a good road trip and this book did not disappoint. I adore Patrick's families (which in IRL would be exhausting for me, like it was for Vicky at first.) I think even as different as Paddy and Vicky were from each other they were also perfect for each other.

I am not sure if there's going to be more books in this series but I would welcome them with open arms if there are.

These characters have become friends! This book shows Vicky and Patrick’s burgeoning relationship – one Patrick didn’t know he wanted and one that terrified Vicky who was only used to people abandoning him. Vicky is so vulnerable, and the love he gets from everyone in the story is more than heartwarming. And Patrick – he’s so gorgeous as he realizes he’s in love with Vicky. And we get to revisit so many of the other characters – Liam, and Joey, and Bryce, and Dakota – and that road trip is one of the funniest pieces of writing I’ve seen this year. There is nothing I would change in this book – not a word of dialogue, not a scene, not a thought. It is wonderful.

I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily.

This book is pure perfection, just like the rest of the series, but it may be my new favourite!
Vicky and Paddy are so freaking adorable and cute and funny together and so adorably clueless in their "oh, no, we're just friends, I'm not in love with him, it's not like that"...
I loved the road trip they take together and all the shenanigans they get up to!
I am completely and utterly in love with the combined O'Reilly-Luciano clan (coming from a big Italian family it's kinda reading about home).
So, all I na really say is that A.E. Wasp keeps writing her incredible and refreshing stories, I hope there are more to come in the Hot Off the Ice series (I mean, the Thunder is bound to have some new players we can learn about, isn't it?).

Just so good

I love A E Wasp and I love the O'Reilly/Luciano family and watching Patrick and Vicky figure things outwash so great.
This also a great road trip book: a few I've read felt like the author just really wanted to write about specific places and it felt superfluous to the story; this road trip allows you to watch these guys fall in love and witness how it changes from friendship love to love love.

Patrick and Vicky have stolen my heart 🖤 Wasp does it again, and engaging, funny, adorable and sexy story. Jesus was it HOT! The description of the scenes was tantalizing, shiver inducing and simply awesome. The family Luciano’s and O’s were AMAZING! And Patrick and Vicky’s dynamic was explosive but also beautiful and pure and GOD I just loved this!
Not only that but we find out about ALL the other couples in this series, which made it even more perfect!

This was a fun and sexy read. Patrick and Vicky/James had amazing chemistry and I loved the back and forth banter between them.

Like Vicky, I had trouble keeping all the people in this book straight, at times. Patrick has a huge family, some of who I’ve met in previous installments of the series, but I still felt like my head might explode at times with the number of people I was introduced/re-introduced to, especially since it’s been quite some time since I read the previous books.

The progression from friends, to friends with benefits, and eventually to lovers was natural and organic and I liked that they took their time to work up to “real sex”. This made the progression more believable, especially since Patrick had never been with a guy before. Ms. Wasp definitely has no issues writing a smoking hot sex scene, let me tell you. *fans self*

The road trip we take with Vicky and Patrick was fun and included some laughs along the way. My biggest issue with the book is that, while I know they are both bi/bi-curious, It was a turn-off how much previous and potential encounters with women are brought up. I know some don’t mind, but it makes me uncomfortable. * shrugs shoulders* Also, I can live with grammatical the mistakes, but I think there should have been more emphasis when proofing on continuity issues, such as wrong names used.

Still, this was an enjoyable read that I definitely have no issues recommending.

Patrick and Vicky are best friends. The two immediately hit it off once Patrick was moved up to the Thunders. They have been inseparable ever since. To the point where everyone assumes they are a couple or are beginning to wonder if the two of them are something. And everything changes when Vicky finally calls Patrick out on his flirting and if he wants something between them, he just has to ask. Patrick doesn't even realize what he has been doing but now that the thought is out there, he realizes that maybe he does want something more with Vicky. But is terrified that they will lose their friendship. So naturally with the promise the nothing happening to their friendship, they decide to try friends with benefits. Thus beginning the story of how these two fall in love and don't even realize it. I loved their story. They are such a great pair with so much chemistry. Both have such different views on love and relationships and neither really realize that they are in love with the other and that they have between them is exactly that. A loving and very real romantic relationship. Such a fun story watching as they try and figure it out and have these crazy summer adventures along the way. This was a great last story to the series and I'm sad it's over! But definitely a great one to end on.

Love this series

First, thank you for the character refresher at the beginning of the book. Although as the story went on,there was enough hints to remind me of who was who. That said I loved seeing all the crazy O'Reilly and Luciano families together again. So many laugh out loud moments in this book. This was a wonderful bumbling friends to lovers story. Patrick and James (Vicky) are young twenty somethings, friends who decide to road trip. This is there adventure...one that leads the from BFF to friends with benefis and finally to being in love.

KU, contemporary, book in series, profession athlete hockey, friends to lovers, lol

AMAZING❤️

This series has been so awesome! I wasn’t interested in hockey until I started reading this series. I know way more than I ever thought I would. These families are so great! Patrick and Vickies story is different from most other ones. They don’t worry about coming out. I know that they will eventually but this book was about them falling in love and it is amazing! Can’t wait to read more!

Since the last book was disappointing and I was not sure about Patrick as a MC because he did a pretty shitty thing in the prior book, I didn’t have high hopes for this one but it was actually really good.
I liked the road trip thing and how things evolved between Vicky and Patrick. You could practically feel them both falling in love together (and be too dump to see that themselves).
Maybe this one was even my favorite in this series.

I think this one was my least favorite from the series. I didn’t like what Patrick did to his best friend in the previous book even if it was by mistake. Also it’s not brought up here at all. He is into his BF and they start a friends with benefits thing since he’s a bit bicurious which turns into more. There was just a lot of parts I was bored. I was ALSO over his family only because of how many they are and they are. They get a HFN since there’s no epilogue.

Part Romance, Part Travelogue

It's summer and hockey season is over for Patrick and James. Having been invited to two weddings in different states, they decide to go on a roadtrip. The action takes place in seven states, with scenic commentary, hence the travelogue part. The development of their relationship began in previous books, so they are best read in order for the best effect.

My absolute favorite of the series

There were so many times I laughed until I cried in this book. The 4 texts Patrick got from friends/family had me breathless with laughter. Just wait till you get to that part, and you’ll see what I mean. Patrick and Vicky were perfect together. I loved their friendship and their romance. I’m so sad the series is over.

I AM SO SAD. I can’t believe I’ve finished another amazing series and I have to say goodbye to these men and their families!!! I wish there were more, but I know it’s time to move onto another series. But I loved this so much. This was my favourite book in the series and it is so bittersweet to say goodbye!

Happy reading!

Decent ending for the series. The Story was over all well written although the pacing wasa little slow. There was a lot of feels and mentle angst in this book but definitely not in a bad way. It was good seeing quite a few of the previous characters for the wrap up as well as more than one HEA.

I couldn’t love these families more if I tried!

I enjoyed this book immensely. From the hockey, to the descriptions of the greater Seattle area to the tight bond these families have - I couldn’t put this book down.

Loved it!
